Title: 1st Chain of Command AAR
Post by: Gazjones on April 12, 2015, 11:08:37 PM
Hi Guys, this is my first attempt at an AAR following a request... Here goes.

The game was for the British to capture an area and hold it.
This is the table looking towards the German lines.

After the patrol phase the British ended with some very poor jump off points, two in the open on table edge.

The Germans had two good positions in the centre. The third was at the end of the road to the right.

The British start the advance in the open with the bren team on overwatch and a Humber as support and recce.

German infantry deploy in the orchard and rush to take on the Brits in the open.

Thankfully for the troops crossing the open ground, the MG42 crew were blinded by smoke fired from a 2" mortar that was deployed in a small orchard.

The british infantry managed to reach the hedgerow reasonably unscathed. Unfortunately a random mortar barrage hit the orchard square on causing severe damage to the poor German squad. They had no option but to fall back through the trees.

After a very tough firefight in the orchard, the British finally managed to make close combat which saw the German squad crumble. This left their jump of point open for capture.

The Humber decided to stray too close to the enemy positions even after being warned.
A brave panzer grenadier fired a panzerschreck straight into the Humber's face....ouch!

Heavy German resistance made a sudden advance to take on a fresh British section that was attempting to flank them.
Short of supplies the German force managed to drag an old Panzer II out of retirement for support.

the British main support now arrived in the shape of a Churchill Tank, but more bad luck struck the infantry. Most of them were smashed by the sudden German advance and were forced to leave the table. This left the Churchill in a very sticky situation.

Once again the fearless warrior with the panzerschreck struck again and hit the Churchill on the front. Unlucky for him, after rolling 13 dice, the amount of damage was very poor.

Another view.

The British have managed to get within spitting distance of their objective, but German resistance was strong and a final push was fruitless. The Brits fell back to the orchard shortly after this picture.

This was the straw that finally broke the British camel's back. Our panzerschreck hero made yet another heroic attack and destroyed the Churchill forcing the Brits to call off the attack. I hope this soldier receives the highest award. For me, he was definately "Man of the match".

All through this game, the Brits had dreadful dice rolls. The Germans always managed to do some crippling counter-attacks with many consecutive phases being rolled on the command dice. I think this portrayed their real life skill very well for a game.

I Hope you liked it.

Awesome- sound like a great game, and you have some fantastic photos to show off. The buildings and terrain are lovely but the smoke trail from the AT shell is the star of the show.

I agree brilliant looking game and spot on photography.
Pity the Germans had to make do with a museum piece for a tank but good fun  lol
PS Where did you get those lovely buildings from?

They found Pz-II in a barn, cleared out the chickens and mice and the old girl started first time lol

The large house with red doors is from Sarissa, but has roof tiling added for a better look. The rest are scratchbuilt by myself.

Cheers

Very good read, fabulous photos – you should write AARs more often. :)
The terrain looks especially pretty, not OTT, nice and simple. Any guess on the total length of those hedges? Just asking since I'm planning to create a similar layout sometime soon.

Cheers Doc. The hedge length is around two meters ;)

Sweet looking terrain, love it.
Your AAR report is spot on, great story telling.

Mad Doc Morris,
Back in 2009 for a Normandy game I made about 55 to 60 feet of hedge.
It covered a 6' x 8' table.

Gaz,

GREAT AAR!!!

To have the random mortar barrage did you roll 4 "6s" on 5 dice??  lol lol
(clarification for non-CoC fellows: the random event is triggered rolling 4 or more 6s on 5 dice).

And yes, the Pzschreck is a nasty pipe... 13 damage dice, but it was able to disable the Churcill only on the second hit, so the British armour was pretty good.

Again, GREAT AAR, I remain waiting for the next, and thank you!!
And KUDOS for the scratchbiult houses!

Marco

Excellent AAR, the models and terrain were first class. Don't be to long doing another, always worth a read when the table looks this good.
