Title: Michka's Star Wars project (Second vendor stall started 7/8/2017)
Post by: Michka on April 24, 2015, 06:05:24 PM
Rather then start a bunch of new threads for all the different projects I want to work on right now, I'm making a single, all inclusive thread that I will try to update as often as possible. That is, till I'm pulled back to my fantasy projects. I'm starting off with the Stormtroopers from the Imperial Assault game. I finished painting them, but haven't started re-basing yet. Here we go...

I've also been trying to learn sculpting. I mean proper sculpting, with green stuff  rather then Super Sculpey. I've had some success with making monsters and giants for my Fantasy project, but it takes a whole different set of skills to make 28mm human figures. I was trying to find a good subject when it hit me. I've always wanted some Star Fleet officers for Star Trek role playing games. Those are human beings (mostly) with close fitting uniforms, so why not start there. Here are some W.I.P. shots. I still need to make the head and hands.

At this point I was feeling pretty good about my work. Then I discovered I had missed one very important element... Depth.

This guy is just too damn skinny. The head and hands will have to wait. I'm gonna have to bulk the gentleman out, or he'll never pass the Star Fleet physical. I'll post more shots as I go. I should also have the re-based Stormtroopers up early next week. Let me know what you think.

Update time. I'll start off with the re-based Stormtroopers.

And here is a shot of some old metal WOTC Star Wars figures. Hard to believe there was a time they made metal Star Wars minis.

You can see how well the two scales match.

and here is the finished  sculpt of the Star Trek crewman. This is my first 28mm sculpt, and I'm rather pleased with it.

side shot...

There are plenty of issues with my sculpting, but I think you can tell what it's supposed to be. I have a lot to learn.

Let me know what you think.

Formerly known as Michka's current Sci-Fi projects

Thank you randycarter and Commander Viper. I'm glad you like the Star Wars stuff. The older figures are really nice sculpts.

I'm abandoning the all inclusive thread idea. I'm really focused on the Star Wars stuff right now, so this is turning into a purely Star Wars thread. When I get around to painting the Star Trek dude I'll start another thread for that subject.

So I might as well do an update now. First up, the Probe Droids form Imperial Assault.

The original figures were mounted to the bases on their lowest hanging legs. Since I was re-basing the things anyway I figured flight bases would look better, and be stronger in the long run. Next up, Imperial Guards, also from Imperial Assault.

And finally, another WOTC metal figure, a Cerean Jedi.

I replaced the lightsabre blade with a piece of brass rod. Even in lead the blades get bent up too easily. I took another shot for scale. Here's the Cerean Jedi vs a Stormtrooper and a Probe Droid.

Please let me know what you think.

The IA guys look good, big stormies fit well "aren't you a little short for a storm trooper?" ;)

Cheers

Wow, the painting here is just great Michka.  They are all very nice, but knowing how tricky it can be to get basic Stormtroopers painted nicely, they take the honours for me so far.

Loads of lovely stuff though.

Thank You Malamute. The Cerean Jedi is a favorite figure of mine, although I think I need to fix those damn eyes.

Thank You Constable Bertrand. The title was causing me some grief. I mean, how can a thread with Star Wars stuff be a miss right now? I hadn't noticed that the Stormtroopers were that big before. Like you said, it works.

Thank You Cheetor. I've painted lots and lots of Stormtroopers in my day, but these were actually the easiest ones. I found a cool YouTube video series about painting all the figures in the Imperial Assault box set called Sorastro's Painting. I'm not doing these exactly like he says, but a couple tricks have come in real handy.

Thank You Jimbibbly. I cut a piece of brass rod to something close to the original's length plus a couple millimeters. Then rounded the end of the rod with a piece of sandpaper. Drilled out the saber handle with a pin vise and glued it in place. The light effect was super simple. It's Citadel Scorpion Green with a light white line on one edge. That's it.

Thank You huesped. The Star Wars hype helped me get started painting these Imperial Assault minis. And I needed all the inspiration I could get.

I'll start off with a pair of E-Web Heavy Repeating Blasters, manned by Imperial Engineers. (Looks an awful lot like a Scout Trooper to me, but that's what the game says they are.)

Next up are three Imperial Officers. From what I've seen online, the officer is very important in the skirmish game.

And finally, another WOTC metal figure, the Human Male Fringer. Yet another miniature that I decided needed a white stripe in his hair.

I think I'm about halfway through the Imperial Assault box set right now. Eventually I will be able to open the character packs.

Thank you jimbibbly, Constable Bertrand, Peithetairos and Commander Vyper. I'm having so much fun painting IA figures that I'm not building terrain yet. Even if I finish all the Imperial Assault figures before the next wave comes out I have at least ten more metal WOTC figures to paint. Will this never end?

Commander Vyper: the metal characters are also from WOC, but I'll take a side by side photo soon. Maybe tomorrow.

Peithetairos: I ended up moving the Star Trek sculpting stuff to my old Star Trek thread. I posted the painted finished piece over there.

If you've any bendy woc that would be great.  Failing that a ruler in the shot would be awesome.

The fringed would make an excellent Talon Karde.

Fantastic painting, I like the smooth lines and shading.

Thank you Oldben1. I might have been thinking about Talon Karde when I painted him.

Here are a couple shots for scale of Star Wars figures from different companies.

Left to right: WOTC Metal,   Grenadeir/WEG,   FFG Imperial Assault,   WOTC collectible bendyKnight Models 30mm.

I'd have done all Stormtroopers, but WOTC Metal never made a Stormtrooper, and I haven't assembled my Knight Models group yet. And just for giggles...

Same line up with a Star Wars Command figure in back. If you still want more comparison shots let me know. They'll have to wait till tomorrow though.

Thank You CaptainHaddonCollider. It's a nice game that I might actually get to play some day. (Honestly, I just bought it for the miniatures.) I am painting up some of the players right now, and one of them is a Rebel Commando. If all goes well I might have that one done by tomorrow.

Commander Vyper, is this the shot you were looking for?

I took the shot at a lower angle, so the scales are easier to compare. I also set the WOTC bendies on washers so the tops of their bases are roughly on the same level. I couldn't take a true comparison shot of scouts to scouts, because I don't own any WOTC Imperial Scouts.

congrats for your painting!!

Thank you Huesped. I have a huge collection of WEG minis painted already. I too wish they'd match the scale of those, but I'm afraid the days of true 25mm figures is pretty much gone. At least we're getting something better then the super bendy plastic of the collectible game.

I hope FFG considers making metal versions of these figures. Seems like making a Deluxe Collector Series of metal Star Wars minis right now would be like printing money. It would go a long way toward proving they're making a miniatures game instead of a board game.

Time for another update. I finally got a Rebel Hero from Imperial Assault painted. This is Fenn Singis, also known as the Veteran.

I also started doing a few touch ups and re-painted on some older Star Wars stuff. I finished re-painting my Rancor.

This is the Action Fleet Rancor toy. I glued his mouth in place, filled some divots and screw holes, and fixed the arms in place. Originally this toy could open it's mouth and you could stuff the small Action Fleet figures into it's mouth. The tail would open up so you could get the figures back out. I knew this feature had to go before my players started shoving fully painted miniatures into the rancor.

Even though this isn't the best representation of the beast, it's size is perfect for these larger minis. Here's poor Fenn having a really bad day.

It's quite a bit larger then the WEG version. I never did finish this figure. (Sorry for the bad picture. The raw metal blends too well with the white background.)

I also started making some scatter terrain for this project. I like how the painting turned out, but I'm not pleased with how big these bottle cap crates are. Maybe they'll look better in an outdoors setting. I'll be looking around for some smaller bottle caps to try out.

More to come. Let me know what you think.

Thank you randycarter. If memory serves, I used Testors Flat Black spray paint to prime the toy. Back in the day I painted it I used standard miniatures paints, dry brushed over the primer which worked fine. Sealed with Testor's Dull Coat and the paint never came off.
For the re-paint I just painted over original paint job using thinned down cheap craft paint.  A few layers of thinned craft paint, then a few blotchs of green and a dry-brush over the whole thing. Washed with GW Nuln Oil and it was done. If I was starting from scratch I'd wash the toy with soapy water before priming it. I've been doing this recently and it's made a world of difference.

Raxxus, I will try to get another scale photo taken in the next couple days.

Those bottle cap crates look very nice and if you find some a little smaller you can make 2 varieties and it probably disguises these ones size. For me they look ok. :)

Thank you Verd and Rumcara. I haven't painted any more terrain lately, but it's on my mind a lot.

Update time. Feels like I haven't made an update in forever. First up I have a minor character from Star Wars.

The Darth Vader figure comes in the Imperial Assault box game. Not a bad figure, but something about the head looks wrong to me. I replaced the blade with brass rod, which I do with all my lightsabre blades. Well, not the WEG ones. Those aren't as bendy and out of control as the plastics and such.

Speaking of Lightsabres, I have a pair of Jedi characters from the metal WOTC line.

These were originally painted years ago, but I had to touch them up a lot to bring them up to snuff. The blades were replaced on these as well.

Here are two of the hero figures from the Imperial Assault box, Gaarkhan the Wookie and Mak Eshka-rey the Bothan Saboteur.

The bothan came out really nicely. I wasn't sure about him till I put the last dot in his eyes. Now I'm pretty darn happy with him. The wookie is suffering from shiny wash syndrome. I've given it a blast of dull coat which helped. I'm hoping a second blast will tone the shine down some more. Darth could use a second blast too.

Next up, the Nexu from the Imperial Assault box

With bases

Without bases

I worked on these figures for weeks. I even re-painted the second one because I wasn't sure the fur were coming out light enough.
So what do you guys think? Should I add the bases to the Nexu, or leave the bases off?

And finally a model I painted a while ago, purely to serve as terrain.

It's one of the pre-painted X-Wing models that came out a few years ago. I weathered it quite a lot, and added details to the cockpit. I took a shot with some I.A. stormtroopers to show how well it matches for scale. It's not screen accurate scale, but it works for a miniatures game.

That's it for now. Raxxus, I'm sorry I forgot to get those scale shots taken. I'll try to get that done soon.

Well done. :-* :-*
Your collection is groing fast.
That x-wing looks great as scenario. I think Revell or AMTERTL has one in 1/48 (???) that is also good.
With or without bases the nexu look great.

Beware though. There are 2 scales of x-wings. I remember AMTERTL to have both in 1/72 (or 1/87) and in 1/48. I think revell got the 1/72 one but not sure.

Thank you everyone. Sorry for missing so many posts. I was away for the weekend. Pretty sure I used the 1/72 scale X-wing. I know it isn't exactly the right scale, but if you use the 1/48th scale it fills a huge space on your table. As you can see, this model is plenty big, and it's significantly larger then the silhouette shown on the play maps that made for the WOTC collectible games.

Nothing new got painted, but I might start showing off some of my older WEG minis soon, just to keep the flame alive.

Yes please keep the flame alive!

Thank You kidterminal. Don't mind if I do.

I'll start out with some scale shots I promised to Raxxus over a week ago. Here are the IA Stormtroopers along with some older GW as well as a couple Hasslefree figs.

I also took a few more scale comparison shot, just because I was moving figures around. Here are those Stormtroopers along with Crooked Dice Fed Troopers.

Then there's Stormtroopers next to a Mongoose Judge.

and next to a Harlequin/Black Tree Design Dalek and the Doctor.

Thank you jimbibbly and Steve F. The idea of Imperial vs. Federation chess has some merit.

I had a chance to take shots of some of my WEG collection. I'll start with my Imperials. The Rebels and Rogues could take a while. Here's all the Imperials I have painted.

And to break this down, I'll start off with my Stormtroopers. 46 Standard troopers, 5 Sand Troopers and 2 Scout Troopers, and four Clone Trooper conversions at the back.

Thank you  psullie, jimbibbly, rumacara, kidterminal,  huesped, and Constable Bertrand.

I've been collecting and painting the WEG Star Wars figures since they first came out. You can tell if you look closely how my painting style has changed over the years. I've also changed the basing on these guys a number of times. They started out on pennies. Then they moved to one inch washers. Then 3/4 inch washers. I was planning to switch over to the painted bases I use for my modern stuff eventually. You can see an example of this in the first scale comparison shot earlier in the thread. Now I'm using that time to paint the newer figures.

Thank You Chico. I'll try to get some more shots taken over the weekend. It'll probably be WEG Rebels next, as I haven't painted a thing this week.

Thank You Oldben1. The Nogrii were painted in the last few years. Some of these paint jobs make me cringe a bit. (The Emporor and his Guard for instance.) I refuse to re-painted them, as they represent my style at the time. Besides, they look fine at table distance.
I'm planning to re-base the Nogrii and continue using them with the newer stuff. Who knows if anyone will make them in the larger scale, and at this size I think they'll mix well with the FFG stuff. (That won't stop me from picking up a new figure, if you're looking FFG.)

Thank You Commander Vyper. I've been watching your WEG Star Wars project for years now. In fact your thread may be why I painted up so many Stormtroopers.

I think the paint job on the emperor is well done.  I have the miniature, the cloak comes very far down on the forehead.

It makes him look mysterious anyways.  The WOTC one is a little too animated anyways.

Post by: Michka on May 31, 2015, 07:08:04 AM
I like the sculpt of the Emperor. I just don't like the way I highlighted his robes. I think it's the flash, because the highlight on actual figure isn't quite so stark.

Quick update. I was shooting something else so I grabbed my WEG Rebel Troops and took a shot. Here they are...

There are two or three Stargrunt figures on the left side of the group, and a couple rather large fellas from Eureka (I think) at the rear left. The Shistavanen Werewolf at the front is just a re-paint of the cantina character. I figured the Rebel Alliance wouldn't be so human-centric as the Empire. And who wouldn't want a werewolf on his boarding party?

I'll try to get some more shots taken in the next couple days.

Thank You Constable Bertrand. Once I figured out how to paint the two greys on the Rebel Troops it was pretty easy. Now if only I can remember those colors before I have to paint the Imperial Assault version.

Thank You psullie. Please steal away. I was pretty happy with how he turned out too.

Thank You Chico. I'm really loving all the Star Wars threads lately, and yours is pretty darn amazing.

Time for more WEG Rebels. I'll start at the Battle of Endor with Admiral Ackbar, a Mon Cal assistant, Princess Leia and a Commando in Endor Camouflage.

Next we have some Jedi. Obi-Wan Kenobi, ROTJ Luke, Empire Luke and some other Jedi who looks slightly like a young Terence Stamp.

Han, Chewie and Leia in their original outfits.

Droids. C-3PO, R2-D2, another Protocol Droid and another Astromech Droid.

And now for something a bit different. Here is an old AT-AT model from AMT. I've included a few Stormtroopers for scale. For years I've heard people arguing that the AMT kit is just too small. It might not be the exact size, but it's perfect for use on a gaming table. The old Kenner toy was way too big for the WEG sized miniatures.

This poor model has seen better days. There's a rubber band inside the model that holds the head on. That rubber band is loose, so the AT-AT has a perpetual hang-dog look. One of the guns is broken off, and it's missing some parts on the feet. When I painted this it was my best model work I'd ever done. Now all I can see is the heavy handed weathering and the uneven work on the legs. Of course this thing is almost a decade old.

I also have some AT-STs that work with these smaller figures. They're the Action Fleet toys.

and a groups shot of the walkers.

That's it for today. I should have some more Imperial Assault figures finished in the next couple days.

Nothing wrong with the AT-AT, could just be based on a very damp world.

Thank You Mason. Grandma?

Thank You einarolafson. Glad you like it.

Thank You kidterminal. Like I said, this size works for 25mm on a table. I'll be using something else for my newer stuff, including the AT-ST from the Imperial Assault box set. I mean, I already own the thing. Grandma again? Are you guys trying to tell me something? 46 isn't that old, is it?

Thank You rumacara. I suffer from the 'Make an Army' disease. It comes from my WH40K days.

Thank You jimbibbly. Yeah, I know it's not the right scale. But for practicality sake, I needed something smaller. I tend to skew my vehicles to the smaller size when compared with the figures. That's what I like about science fiction settings. Unless you know the fluff well, the eye can be fooled by something close enough. Modern stuff is another story. Nothing bothers me more then seeing a modern city set with nicely painted people being dwarfed by huge SUVs and Minivans. Especially if the cars are unpainted.

We're the mold lines hard to fix on Obi-wan.  I had two of them at one point.  The entire head was misaligned on both.

Obi-Wan wasn't great, but the mold lines weren't too bad. I got lucky with two decent figures.

Collecting WEG Star Wars is kind of a crap-shoot when it comes to quality. The later runs of figures have a reputation for poor casting. It doesn't help that a number of bad re-casters on E-Bay will never let you know they're selling re-casts.

Wonderful stuff as always :)

As for bad castings nothing beats the WEG's Rebels solders for mould lines, holes and general thinness and I know mind weren't recast as I opened the blister(s) myself. Heh alot of the Stormies arn't much better for flash and mouldlines.

Thank you Chico. I remember opening packs of Stormtroopers near the end of WEG, and they looked awful. I wonder just how many little lead stormtroopers were made from those molds.

Update time. I'd planned to make an update sooner, but a nasty cold got in the way. No WEG stuff this time though. Instead it's all stuff I've painted recently. I'll start with the AT-ST from the Imperial Assault box.

This turned out much better then my old weathering efforts. I'd hardly call it subtle, but it's an improvement other the older ones. Here's another shot for scale.

Next we have a resin piece I picked up at a convention a while ago. I think it's from Anstiy originally. This piece always reminded my of the Detention Block terminal from A New Hope.

The level of detail on this kit is rather disappointing. There's no switches and knobs on this piece, save a couple on the computer screens. Still, it's a nice piece for the collection.

and finally a W.I.P. shot of a column I made for a statue. More to come.

I have a couple AT-ST from the Imperial Assault set that I'm looking to paint up hopefully soon.
You got a great collection here.   :o

Thank You D@rth J@ymZ. I still have another AT-ST from a second IA box, and the General Weiss AT-ST, so my AT-ST fleet is coming along. Now if I can just get them all painted.

Thank You kidterminal. I still like the old AT-STs too. There are some things I just refuse to re-paint. My 25mm Star Wars collection is one of them.

Thank You Rhoderic . I've been trying to find a use for those things for years. Little did I know I could just slap them on the sides of terrain.

Thank You Constable Bertrand . I'm pretty happy with it too.

I should point out that the painting techniques for the AT-ST come from the Sorastro's Painting tutorial video on YouTube. Same guy I reference for my Stormtroopers. (Don't think I've written AT-ST that often in my life.)

I like the terminal as well.  "we're all fine here, how are you?"

Thank You Oldben1. The hand painting on the terminal screens turned out much better the I expected.

Update time again. Two posts in one week. I'm on fire. First up, some Rebel Troopers from Imperial Assault.

And the painted column, or plinth as I've learned it's supposed to be called.

Oh, and Thank You Mike. Now I have an game idea. The rebels have to stop a Reeducation Fleet before it reaches an artist colony. Never throw away a good idea, especially if it comes from a player. Makes 'em feel guilty.

Yeah I know what you mean. Being able to get good Star Wars figures in 28mm is awesome. Some of the expansions are a bit pricey and the other option is WOTC figures, but those seem a bit random quality wise.

The rules sound pretty cool and I like the fact there is 2 games in one, and even if the rules suck, the scenarios and campaign will be useful.

Thank You D@rth J@ymZ and 6mmfan. I have loads of the WOTC plastics, but I just can't get excited about them. The FFG figures may be bendy plastic, but they aren't too bendy. I'm happy with the results I get from painting them. As for the rules, it doesn't hurt that they're so popular right now. Feels good to see more Star Wars minis coming out.

Time for an Update. I'll start off with my only proper Imperial Assault figure, Diala Passil haunted exile.

Looks like she needs another dull coat. I didn't like the skin color, so now she's green. If the player doesn't like it he can paint his own Twi'lik Jedi. I replaced the blade with brass rod. This was not my favorite figure from Imperial Assault. The mold lines were pretty rough, and the hand holding the light sabre is chunky as hell. Oh well. She's done now.

The next few items are all from other manufactures, for other games, but I thought they'd make fun props for Star Wars. First up is some ammo crates from DUST tactics. These were just weathered for effect. They are also REALLY BIG, as you can see when compared with the Stormtrooper.

Next up, a Heavy Labor Droid I made out of the Mule from the Eisenkern Trooper Accessory Set from Dreamforge Games. I replaced the walking feet with treads from a 1/144 halftrack and some plasticard.

I'm very happy with how the model turned out, but the paint job went wrong somewhere along the line. I did way, way too much weathering on this guy, and it obscures the details too much. I'll have to make another one soon. Here's a picture of the Heavy Labor Droid carrying one of the DUST ammo Crates.

And finally, here are some Doors from the lovely Sedition Wars Terrain Pack.

I probably went too far on the weathering on these too, but they'll look great on a Sedition Wars map. I included a Sedition Wars Vanguard trooper in there for scale comparison. You know, Stormtroopers would look good going through those SW scenarios. Hummm...

Let me know what you think.

Thank You Chico. No sign of loosing interest any time soon. You know the DUST stuff is a bit too big for your WEG figures, but the doors would work.

Oldben1, that was the idea. I try to make all my miniatures and terrain as universal as possible. That's why I use the same bases for modern and science fiction.

rumacara, I really need to write up some scenarios soon. So far the only focus to this project has been finishing my Imperial Assault figures and making stuff.

Michka, the most important and time consuming is painting the figures so that we can play.
So far you are doing great so when you feel that you have enough figures and scenario then you write the scenarios for your games. ;)

One thing that you might consider for your lightsaber wielders that was a common thing for conversions before WotC got their SW sections yanked. There are a lot of places that sell thin, acrylic rods in lightsaber colors that work perfectly glued into place on minis and are surprisingly durable as well.

As Grimmnar said, acrylic rod wouldn't be thin as I would like. I also like the painted light source over a translucent one. If I really wanted the lightsabers to pop I'd use OSL effects on the figures. The main reason I'm not doing this is because it's a pain, but also because that effect isn't seen in the early movies very often.

Well appreciate the defense. Showed me something i didnt kknow was out there. I mean when i looked before, admittingly didnt for long, i didnt find them this skinny. I would nitpick i would like em a bit skinnier but these would work quite well though.
Also learned that Hasslefree has em. Any sources in the States?

Side question. Besy way to tapper or round the tip w/o loosing the effect?

There is a lot of places in the States where you can buy it,  just check the Ebay search with "acrylic rods" or "acrylic tubes"
For example you can check here: http://stores.ebay.com/AltaRail/_i.html?_nkw=acrylic+rod&submit=Search&_sid=1104297927

Also you can check things like cocktail sticks or knitting tools:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/38cm-transparent-acrylic-rolling-stirring-rod-cocktail-picks-20pcs-lot-free-shipping/1351993917.html?spm=2114.32010308.4.80.BvQXUQ

Considering second question i can say that you can easily cut these rods with modelling knife without losing clear effect.

Thanks for the ideas guys. While I might not want to use the acrylic rods right now I could change my mind down the line. At the moment I don't have any more Jedi to paint. Well, except that now I need to get those two from Hasslefree. I know about the Libby one, but what is the guy called. I also have to find the kids.

Last night Mike (MPennock) and I played the intro game of Imperial Assault. Here's the set-up

And here's Diala Passil confronting the entire Imperial opposition. She got really lucky and dodged twice in this game.

Here the Imperial Officer has run around the Jedi to back shoot her. The smuggler made it around that wall and shot the officer in the back before he could take a second shot, which would have taken Diala out.

Not a bad little game, but I just couldn't warm up to all the cards and counters and special rules. I'm sure if I played a bunch of games I'd get into it, but as an old man I only get to play occasionally, so I like my rule sets simple and elegant.

The only new Imperial Assault figure I've painted recently is the Smuggler Jyn Odan.

I like the design of the character, but that pose is just silly. I might find another female smuggle to replace this one. Maybe a re-paint of the old WOTC metal one I showed here earlier. I have an extra.

Someone on another forum asked how the Dreamforge Stormtroopers would look as Imperial Stormtroopers. I had one assembled but unpainted, so I gave it a try. Here it is...

It sorta works but I hate the super long gun. I'll try to equip another trooper with one of the carbines. A carbine just looks better to me for science fiction.

And lastly I have a few more WEG minis. These are some vehicles I painted long ago. First up, Snowspeeders.

These were a monumental pain to clean, but they paint up nice and I really like the size of them with the WEG stuff. The second picture of the speeders with the tops off is to show that I really did paint the pilots. If you're going to paint rebel pilots you really need to show them off, because orange...

Finally, here are all the Speeder Bikes I have painted.

Why oh why did they sculpt the rebel on the speeder bike in the navy costume. Why not the Endor Commando outfit. Seems that would have made sense.

Let me know what you think.

And don't forget the Jedi panda.

Thanks Steve F. I had forgot about the panda. I need an alien Jedi that looks like a panda.

Kidterminal, those are West End Games Speeder Bikes. The bike, the rider, the handles and the base are all separate pieces which have to be glued together. Fortunately the results look great. Unfortunately the scale won't match anything except the 25mm stuff.

Nice stuff.

I like the Revell snap tite Snowspeeders.  They are close to 72nd scale but think would look good with 25 or 28mm stuff.
Prepainted but I did give the crew a wash.  Really need to go back and detail paint the thing but it was a quick build just to get my mojo working.

I ordered one of those snap-tite kits at my local game store but it hasn't arrived yet. It might never arrive, which is OK with me because I've since ordered one of the BanDai 1/48th Snowspeeders. From everything I've seen this is gonna be a nice model to go with the Imperial Assault stuff. I also ordered a 1/48th scale AT-ST to go along with it. I'm looking forward to seeing how the BanDai kit compares with the Imperial Assault miniature.

Oh, and I lost big geeks points recently when Mike pointed out that the chin guns on my AT-ST were mounted upside down. I hang my head in shame.

The Bandai kits are really nicely detailed (AT-ST even comes with Chewbacca) but not my scale.  Wish they would also do these 2 in 1/72nd.

I like what you've done so far and the long gun on the Dreamforge trooper will do fine for a blaster rifle  :)

Thank you everyone. I'm currently trying to find the rest of my Dreamforge Troopers, as well as the accessory pack. They seem to be hiding somewhere in the basement, possibly with the slotta bases which are also hiding. I'd really like to make a few more Eisenkern troopers but I really don't want to go buy another box.

rumacara I ordered my BanDai kits from Hobby Link Japan. That's the link kidterminal gave. Be warned though, once you look around that site, you might find some real goodies you didn't even know you wanted.

Chico, I wasn't a big fan of the Endor Commando costumes back in the day, but they've grown on me. Given enough time, I can like almost anything in Star Wars. Well, maybe not Jake Lloyd or Hayden Christensen, but the Clone Wars Anakin actor is pretty darn good.

Not a bad little game, but I just couldn't warm up to all the cards and counters and special rules. I'm sure if I played a bunch of games I'd get into it, but as an old man I only get to play occasionally, so I like my rule sets simple and elegant.

What about FUBAR Star Wars? It looks much simplier but quite complete, and it comes with army lists for both repubblic and rebellion era.  I must admit I never tried it. Did you?

I was planning to use either the WEG Star Wars RPG or Savage Worlds for my Star Wars miniatures games. I know these are role playing games, but I find using RPGs for miniatures games works pretty darn well for me.

On the other hand, I know next to nothing about FUBAR. I hear lot of good things about the system though. Tell me more.

It's a free set of rules, very simple, written in a single sheet. It manages battles between small forces (max. 30 models per part, I think) in WWII-modern-scifi settings. There are two slim upgrades for sci-fi weapons and advanced morale system (each one fitting in a single A4 page). And it comes with several army lists for various settings (including star wars rebellion era and clone wars). You can download everything here:

https://thegamesshed.wordpress.com/2010/06/17/fubar-one-page-sfmodern-rules/

Again: I didn't tried it yet, but I think that if you need simplicity, definitely it worths a look!

Quick update this time. I slightly modified four Eisenkern Troopers from Dreamforge Games to be closer to the Stormtrooper look. I think they turned out pretty good in the end. Here's the four...

and here they are with the first test trooper with the unmodified rifle.

On another forum someone asked me to take a scale comparison shot of an Imperial Assault Stormtrooper and an Eisenkern trooper.

Side by side they don't match up, but in a big group I think they look good enough together.

That's it for today. Let me know what you think.

Oh those Eisenkern are fantastic!

The Action Fleet snowspeeder is also well-sized for 28mm, but they're getting pricey on EBay.  Another one to consider anyway.

Read up about the Bandai kits - they're doing a 1/1700 Imperial Star Destroyer kit.  A handy calculator tells me that's a metre long...

Thank you everybody.

Momotaro, I haven't heard any news about what BanDai plans next. Any word on a Falcon yet, or maybe an Imperial Shuttle?

I was pretty happy with the way the troops turned out. If anyone is interested, I modified the rifles by cutting off the extended barrel, trimming down the bi-pod underneath so it looks like a hefty stock, cut off the butt stock, added a Potato-Masher from the Accessories set as a scope, and drilled a tiny hole in the end. Oh, and I left the shoulder pads and back pack off the trooper. I might do a couple troopers with one shoulder pad, painted orange, and the backpacks.

Another update. OK, it's another small update, but I think you guys might like it.

This is a toy of the shuttle from the Star Tours attraction at Disneyworld. I got the shuttle a few years ago when people weren't interested in Star Wars. It was sitting on a back shelf in the basement when I found it last week, (while looking for my Eisenkern troopers box as a matter of fact.) There are buttons at the back that open the doors on the side, and it makes lots of noise. I pulled it apart, gave the interior a rough paint job, sprayed it grey, put it back together and went to town with weathering and paint chips. The round disc on top was originally one of the wheels. I used that to cover up the out of scale R2-D2 head I had to cut off. But he's can still be heard if you press down the wheel.

The troopers look good, the armour is quite good with your mods, its just the helmet which ruins the look for me... Can you get SW trooper heads anywhere?

That's a spot on transport shuttle for them.

Have you considered the revel imperial shuttle? How does that shape up?

Thank you everyone.

kidterminal, I'm going to use these guys as specialist type troopers. I considered calling them Commandos, ala the Clone Commandos from the Clone Wars era, but the style is too flamboyant for that. Maybe these represent a local color guard, or possibly a local governmental agency's personal guard.

Commander Vyper, I noticed that too. There are some heavy armor versions of the Eisenkern that might work as Phase 2 as well.

Constable Bertrand, the helmets don't bother me half as much as the emblem on the chest. Different stormtroopers usually get different helmets, but none of them have had such garish ornamentation. I think Palpatine eliminated flourishes when he took power.

My first thought was "does anyone make 3D printed storm trooper helmets...".

The concept is good, but I think helmets would sell it tremendously.

PS: Or, I'd bend the canon a bit and create some class of Stormtrooper they're meant to represent.

rumacara, That's a great idea. I'm also considering doing a couple Imperial Assault Stormtrooper with bare heads, just to add a bit of flavor.

Elbows, I'm sure I could find Stormtrooper heads on Shapeways, one way or another. But I really don't have a problem with the helmets. Besides, messing with Star Wars canon is my bread and butter. My first RPG character was a Xenomorph who flew a Y-Wing for the rebellion. Canon is what we say it is at the gaming table.

Now that there is no longer a Sue Rostoni (or what the lady was called) at Lucas office to check the logic and proof it canonic and Disney has decided to call everything but the movies "legends", we all can feel free to create our own legendary stuff that will fit in as good as any formerly "officially approved" stuff, I reckon.

Great work  on the toy shuttle - the number of times I've seen one and thought... "nah...".  But you've nailed it!

As for the Dreamforge troops - there was quite a range of uniforms and clone trooper roles by the end of the Clone Wars, so I don't see a problem.  Maybe stormtroopers and Rebels talk about the Eisenkern in hushed tones "They're bringing in the guys who can shoot straight...".

I'd love to see those photos Mr Bibbly...

Michi, Thank you. The Eisenkern will now be know as Assault Troopers, although Storm Stormtroopers sounds just silly enough to be a mistranslation that I'll try to work into a game sometime.

Momotaro, Thanks for the other idea. They're now the Eisenkern Assault Troopers, or the Eisenkern Storm Stormtroopers as they're called by the Gunguns.

jimbibbly, I can live with a good quality 1/72nd scale Y-Wing. I'll be using a 1/72 scale Millenium Falcon anyway, so I might as well use that scale for my hanger decor. I already have a 1/72 X-Wing, I may be replacing when I see the BanDai version.

mpennock, Ussen mighten be sayin' that.

Update time, and it's a small one. I got in on the Mars Attacks kickstarter a while back, but hadn't done anything with it. While pawing through the box recently I found the Tiger Corp figures. These are the human and alien troopers who fight the martians on many fronts. (Or that's how I interpenetrated it. Haven't read the books yet.) After looking at these guys I decided they'd make great background aliens, or uniformed guards, or just about anything I might need in the way of similarly dressed aliens. I started out by painting these three, just to see how they'd turn out. I didn't base this on any particular faction or background from Star Wars (or Mars Attacks for that matter). Just light colored armor over a black body suit, with pseudo significant lines on the armor. Here they are...

and here's a shot with a Stormtrooper for scale.

Thank You jimbibbly. I'll check it out in a bit.

SotF, I have a few Reaper figures halfway done that are meant for this project. The Nova Corps troops will make excellent fodder for blaster fire, if I ever get them done.

kidterminal, I was pretty happy with how these guys turned out. Now I have to decided if I make the next three match this coloring, or go for something different. A uniform look is nice, but doesn't work so well for the Scum and Villainy type.

Update time. I'll start with the last character miniature I had to paint, Gideon Argus: Valiant Commander.

This figure annoyed me to no end. I'm happy with the painting. I just hated the way this guy holds his blaster, so I repositioned the arm and hand. Unfortunately the final results aren't much better. He still looks awkward holding the gun, but at least he doesn't look like he's afraid of the thing. And this figure had some really bad mold lines. I kept finding more as I painted. I cut off a few lines off but there are some that just weren't worth going after. Actually, the character figures have far worse mold lines then the Imperial troops and such. Oh well. At least all the characters are finished.

Then we have three of the four Trandoshan Hunters.

These turned out much better then I was expecting. I still don't think I need four of the same sculpt of Boskk. Speaking of said bounty hunter, he was left for last. I wanted to take my time getting that one right. Since the Trandoshans are just variations on a theme I figured I could experiment on the also-rans to get the skin textures and eyes right. I just hope the contrasting colors don't take on that Bag of Skittles look.

After finishing these figures I only have two miniatures from the Imperial Assault box left, Boskk and Luke Skywalker. Then I can start in on Han, Chewy, IG-88, and the other first wave expansions. Let me know what you think.

Not a lot that can be done with the 'valient' commander, I am afraid.
He will always look a little on the 'fraidy cat' side, I reckon.
The paint job looks just fine, but you cannot avoid the effect the look of the figure.

Nice work.

Thank you everyone.

The most annoying thing about the Commander is he's a cool character. The card art looks nice, even regal. But it probably wasn't dynamic enough for the sculptor, or more likely the art director. I have the same issue with the Smuggler. She's an interesting character with some good card art, but for some reason the sculptor has her squatting down ready to pick up something on the ground. What the hell???

As for the Trandoshan skin, I people keep referring to Boskk's skin as green. Whenever I looked at pictures it's mostly brown. I used a Reaper Uniform Brown for a base. Then washed it with Citadel Agrax Earthshade. Then picked out some scales with Valejo Khaki. The scales came out a bit too polka-dotted, so I went over it with another Agrax Earthshade wash.

It's update time once again. I'll start with four more member of the Mars Attacks Tiger Corps. This time in green armor.

I went with a more beaten up look for the armor this time around. There's loads of paint chips on the armor, though my poor photography skills may not be show it. Each mercenary has different iconography, as opposed to the matching patterns I used last time.

I also painted up Luke Skywalker.

I really didn't like the sculpting on this figure. It looks good at a distance, but the details are soft. Then again I may have too much paint on the miniature right now. I went back and forth for some time trying to find the right way to paint our hero. I might re-paint this one at some point, but first I have to see what happens when you try to stripe the paint off this plastic.

That's it for now. I should have Bossk finished later this week, which is the last figure from the Imperial Assault box. If you can't tell, I'm really happy to have these done. Let me know what you think.

I love your thread.
Great looking figures.
I went out and purchased Imperial Assault.
I do like the figures. (For the most part.)
I did go back and reread the thread and have a question or request.
Could you give a run down on how you prepped the Imperial Assault figures for painting?
Thanks.

Thank you everyone. I'm still having fun painting Star Wars stuff, but those Mars Attacks minis had me looking through the box, and I might have to paint up some Martians soon. There's no reason Martians can't show up in Star Wars, right?

Warburton, these bases are the ones I use for all my Modern and Science Fiction figures. This way I can mix and match miniatures from any game without the bases being a dead giveaway. Means I have to keep them generic, but they fit any environment this way. They look surprisingly good on green grass too. Much better then the black bases I used before. Not so good on sand, but even snow doesn't look completely out of place. It's the cool colors.

Marine0846, Here's the basic long, drawn-out method of how I prep the Imperial Assault and Mars Attacks minis. I start by trimming all the damn mold lines off the figures. With as sharp an X-acto blade as I find, I slice the lines off, rather then scrape them. I read somewhere that slicing them works, where as scraping the plastic will leave a furry edge. I've seen this often enough to know it's true. The Imperial Assault minis can be scraped a little bit. The Mars Attacks ones shouldn't be scraped, ever. Once the minis are cleaned I cut the bases off, and drill holes in the feet for pins. As I said before, I like all my science fiction figures to have the same bases. I also hate the looks of the integral bases, since half the time these have nasty looking mold lines running though them, and many of the bases are curled. If I remember I clean the minis with soapy water, but most of the time I forget to do this. Then I just spray them with Testors spray paint as a primer. The Imperial Assault and Mantic plastic doesn't react to the spray paint the way the Reaper Bones stuff does. At least I haven't had a problem with it, and I don't even remember to clean the minis most of the time. After they're primed I temporarily pin the minis into old bases so I have something to hold while I'm painting.

Hope that helps.

I'd apologize for the double post, but I didn't want to add photos to such a text heavy message. Instead I'll post some more figures. First up, Bossk.

I'm calling him Bossk, even though this is not a correctly sculpted version of Bossk. The straps around his legs aren't there and some of the other details are inconsistent with how he looks in Empire. Oh well, this is the last figure from the box set so Yeah!!! I also took a shot of him with his Trandoshan buddies.

I also painted IG-88.

Not exactly a difficult paint job, but the mold must have slipped on this one because he doesn't line up very well.

I took a shot of all seven painted miniatures of the Tiger Corps.

I still have three more to go, but I wanted an excuse to re-shoot the guys from yesterday. That's all for now.

Thank you everyone.

jimbibbly, you are truly an inspiration. I love all the Star Wars threads lately but yours is my second favorite. (Mine is my favorite, but only because I get to play with these toys when they're finished.)

Mason, Trannies???  Huh.

Constable Bertrand, Those two were my favorites too. I'm happy with the human standing on the Martian head too, but the other two guys in green turned out much better then I expected. Almost decided to repaint the first three till I remembered how many minis sit in the plastic mountain. Sanity won the day.

JoeRugby, I can see it now. Mars Attacks Tattooine. Burning Banthas running through the streets. Landspeeders filled with armed farmers trying to rescue their droids and women-folk. AT-ATs vs Giant Stumpy Robots. X-Wings vs. Flying Saucers. Jabba vs. Giant Fleas. This could work.

Marine0846, glad to help out. Have fun with your minis. In spite of my complaints I do love these miniatures.

Not a bad little game, but I just couldn't warm up to all the cards and counters and special rules. I'm sure if I played a bunch of games I'd get into it, but as an old man I only get to play occasionally, so I like my rule sets simple and elegant.

Apologies if you have, but have you tried Pulp Alley (http://pulpalley.com/)?  I'm just getting into it, and it seems quite a few folks are using it to get their Star Wars game on - it fits the quoted criteria pretty well  8)

Great mini's in this thread - now I'm contemplating adding Star Wars to my list of (unfinished, of course!) projects...

pulpgoblin, Thanks for the idea. We've played a couple games of Pulp Alley and I really like it. Haven't tried anything sci-fi yet, but I'd love to give the cyberpunk adaptation rules a try. I'm sure PA would work for Star Wars too, but I'm still in love with the old West End Games rules. The RPG rules are basic enough that you can use them for wargaming, and their Miniatures Battles rules still hold up.

Update time. I present the BanDai AT-ST. (Warning, there are lots of photos here.)

The base is a Game Workshop large flight base. I cut the foot connectors off the BanDai square base and glued them on the flight base. Then I layered on putty to level out the foot pads. This way the AT-ST is still removable from the base. I then laid on some Brown Earth texture paste. This was too light so I added GW Stirland Mud, which is a darker brown texture paste.

Here's a scale picture with all of my AT-ST models.

From Left to Right, Fleet Action toy, Imperial Assault miniature, BanDai Model and the old AMT model. Sorry I don't have a WOTC plastic miniature for scale. I never needed one for my WEG figures. The sizes of the BanDai and the AMT models are surprisingly close. The difference between the BanDai model and the Imperial Assault miniature came as a bit of a disappointment. However, the sculpt of the IA miniature is so odd that you could say these are different classes of scout walker. Check out this side by side comparison...

Even though the IA walker is shorter, the weapons are pretty much the same size. Also, the odd line details on the side of the head don't match the official AT-ST at all. I'm probably just justifying having three of the IA walkers, but a case could be made for there being yet another class of scout walker. Let me know what you think.

JoeRugby, that's the nicest thing you could have said. I did a lot of YouTube watching to get some ideas on paint chipping. My work may never be as smooth as an air brush painted model but it fits my style.

huesped, I'm afraid the Bandai model is a bit large for the WEG stuff. The good news is the Imperial Assault miniature should be just about perfect though, and those are readily available.

kidterminal, one redeeming feature of the Imperial Assault miniature is it fits on the tiles. The Bandai kit would never work at that size on those boards.

Thank you once again everyone.

huesped, I always thought the AMT AT-ST was a bit too big for the WEG figures. On the other hand I think it's important to remember that scale in Star Wars is a sliding measurement. The Millennium Falcon sitting in the Hoth hanger bay is a 60% sized version of the ship. That means you have to decided whether you'll replicate the correct scale for the set, or the model. That's the justification I'm using anyway. Your AT-ST looks fantastic next to your miniatures, and when it comes right down to it, we are the only people who have to be happy with our set-up. Most players are just happy to see a well made miniatures set up. I love your miniatures and that AT-ST looks fantastic in that photo.

And I'm jealous of that command speeder too.

Thanks Rob_Jedi. Your comparison image is quite useful. I'll have to look at the rest of your blog soon.

Update time. I'll start out with everyone's favorite smuggler and his co-pilot.

I'm really happy with these figures. The sculpt on Han is pretty damn great, and Chewy isn't bad at all, though I did keep finding new mold lines as I painted him.

I've also been working on some terrain. These aren't finished, but I wanted to show some progress. Here are my first two Tattoine buildings. The first shot is bare foamcore and plastic toy caps. The paint is overspray from painting the insides.

and here is a shot of the buildings with two layers of texture paint covering them. I'll probably add some spackle to the surface, as the texture paint came out too bumpy. I'll leave patches where the bumpy texture shows through some cracked spots. I also plan to make an interior for these buildings, but that will have to wait till I get the shells done.

And finally, I'm adding another re-painted snap kit I did the weathering on. The V19 Torrent is a Clone Wars era fighter that first appeared in the Clone Wars micro series by Gennadiy Tartakovsky.

I always though this was the silliest looking fighter in Star Wars. That might be why I like it so much now. Noticed it on the shelf as I was taking pictures and thought I'd throw it in for fun. Let me know what you think.

The pics I have seen online certainly have pipes/industry/science mixed in with the core level of the buildings. Any final render would be over the mud bricks and hide some of the electronic gizmos.

Constable, I picked up some spackle a couple days ago, but I haven't had the nerve to get started. I did start work on another building though. That might be a weekend project.

Oldben1, I agree about the Han pose. I'm sure there are some flaws in the sculpt, but it sure has a lot of energy.

Thank you huesped. All the great Mos Eisley builds I've seen on this forum are intimidating and inspiring at the same time. I just hope to capture a taste of that world.

Keep it coming.

All right. Sounds like the perfect time for an update.

I'll start with the last three members of the Tiger Corps.

And here's the entire group.

I'm pleased with these last three, but mostly I'm happy to have them all done. This also counts as my first group for Mars Attacks. Hurrah for multi-purpose miniatures!

And here is an AT-PT. This comes from the Star Wars Vehicle collectible magazine series from D'Agestini. (Probably spelled that wrong.) I took a few pictures, including a scale shot with an Imperial Assault Stormtrooper. That poor guy gets a work out.

I was really lucky a few years ago. I found two of these vehicles at a close out store. Both were broken, but the price was irresistible. Here's a shot of the original paint job one next to the one I finished. Most of the other vehicles get better paint jobs. This one they didn't even do the hazard stripes on the shins. The leg is broken, but fortunately a pin and the felt backdrop are holding the figure in place. I have the missing toe too. I just couldn't find it when I took the picture.

That's it for now. Thank you everyone for the compliments. For years now I've had loads of Star Wars projects to work through. Lately I've actually been getting them finished, and it's all thanks to this forum.

The Tiger Corps looks great could we get a shot of them next to an Imperial Assault figure? You really did luck out with those vehicles. ;)

Great work, I love the PJ on the skin and the alien camo scheme (I will steal it for my eldars!).

I think the company you mean is De Agostini: weird to see it so far away  from Italy!

Thank you jimbibbly. You know it's your fault that I have to make Tattoine terrain.

randycarter, steal away. Have you seen the De Agostini 'Build the Millennium Falcon' magazine series?

kidterminal, here is a comparison shot.

You can see the Mars Attacks minis are smaller then the Imperial Assault ones, but they're close enough. Keep in mind that players never look at minis from this angle. This is how we usually see them when gaming.

You can get away with a lot with painted minis and matching bases.

I have to say that this is an inspiring thread.  I have some tiger corp on order after seeing your although my painting skill can't do them the same justice.  I plan on using the Echo base trooper stats for them.

salcor, Echo base stats for the Tiger Corps sound pretty good to me. I have to get back to my Mars Attacks martians soon, or I'll forget about them.

Update time. I have two pieces of terrain this time. Well, the Speeder isn't exactly terrain, but my main reason for making it was to dress a street scene. Anyway, here's a really old Gian Speeder. Warning: I took lots of photos this time.

This is a test piece for a number of new techniques. The spots all over it are from a failed salt technique. I used masking tape to cover the canopy, which is the first time I've done any masking. It won't be the last. I'm pretty happy with the final results, but I think it took too long to get there.
I also have to admit I was inspired by Vongoosewink's speeder project. I had started modifying speeder years ago when I first saw his thread.

The second piece is a downed AT-ST.

This is the old AMT model I showed in the scale shot earlier in this thread. It was always the plan to make a wrecked AT-ST out of that model. If you look carefully at the scale shot you can see the uneven paint job I gave the model. That was step one. I was surprised how much trouble converting this thing into a wreck was. I had to modify the legs to bend the right way, and cut the feet off to re-position them. The base is sheet plastic with cardboard underneath and strip plastic around the edge. I puttied up the top and added lots of texture paint to give it both color and depth. I'm damn happy with how this came out. I'm also not going to make any more crashed vehicle for a while. They're fun to do, but usually take more time then you expect.

Let me know what you think.

Might I suggest some weathering powder on the speeder canopy as it looks a bit clean. If we don't practise we don't improve  :)

The downed AT_ST looks fantastic both in the pose and the paint job. The gian speeder is that the action fleet one? The paint job looks good, the spots look surprisingly realistic.

Awesome thread!

Very inspirational. I especially love (and am jealous of) all the vehicles. Great work. Not much else to be said, really.

One suggestion though: A stripe of color for the speeder. It looks great now, but I think a color accent would really make it shine.

And one question: Did you ever settle on a rules set? If not Blasters And Bulkheads is a great rule set and is very specifically made to game space operas.

Looking forward to more.

jimbibbly, weathering powder huh? Sounds like my next experiment subject has been selected for me. Good thing I have so many Gian speeders.

kidterminal, the speeder is from the Gain Speeder & Theed Palace Action Fleet set. I bought a ridiculous number of those sets just to get the Action Fleet scale Battle Droids. (See Photo #1) Those battle droids are the perfect size to work with WEG figures. (See Photo #2) The unintended consequence is I have a lots of Gian speeders to play with. I figure if I re-paint a bunch of them and hide them in the background of street scenes they won't be so obviously the same vehicle. Movies do this all the time.

eMills, great idea. I'll make sure to do some pin stripes on the next speeder. As for rules I think I'll be sticking with the West End Games Star Wars RPG rules. They're light enough to be miniatures friendly. I might also consider using Pulp Alley. I haven't had the chance to check out Blasters And Bulkheads yet. Does that system use the same base rules as Super System and Chaos in Cairo? If so, I'll throw that in with the other possibilities. So many games, so little time to game.

Never had the WEG books. I've been casually looking for them recently, though I am in no hurry to get them right now.

Pulp Alley is a great set and would work well for most of the setting, but I'm not sure how it would handle Jedi.

BnB is indeed based on the same rules as SuperSystem and Chaos in Cairo. It is set up to be bands of Heroes or bands of Heroes with some Henchmen pitted against each other. Very heavily based on Star Wars for the setting.

kidterminal , was it a Gian Speeder or was it a Flash Speeder? I only ask because I always wanted a Flash speeder, but never found one that wasn't bent to hell.

I find copies of the first edition main book and source book at discount stores often. The later editions and modules are a lot harder to find.

Not a problem for me, as I avoid Jedi wherever possible. I leave the story of the Jedi to the movies and books. There's plenty of fun to be had in the seedy parts of the universe, or with Rebel grunts on the frontlines. Now if I'm telling a tale of the Clone Wars I'll have to start looking for force powers once again.

Quick update. I started sculpting a Hutt last night.

The material is Super Sculpey. This is the first sculpting I've done in months. He still needs arms, shoulders and eyelids, and of course paint, but it's looking better then I expected. More to come.

kidterminal, Super Sculpey is my favorite sculpting material. I started this guy with a mix of white and black Fimo, and had to throw it out because it was too brittle. My favorite way to work is adding Green Stuff on top of a Super Sculpey base. That's how I worked on my Fantasy sculptures from earlier this year.

Another quick update. Progress shot of Sculpey the Hutt.

Still needs that second arm, and some bulking up in the upper torso, but he's coming along nicely.

I used to use it alot but you can't get really fine details, but it never accrued to me to use greenstuff on top of a scuplty base.

Hutts are hermaphrodites, self fertilizing hermaphrodites no less.

Wookiepida makes that claim though some of Wookiepida's claims seem suspect to me. Jabba has a child in the Clone Wars cartoon.

Post by: Michka on August 27, 2015, 01:37:25 AM
Jabba had a mother according to the non cannon books and the RPG guides make no mention of self fertilization.

I think sexes of the Hutts is like the spine thing. It all depends on what you read last. In the Karen Traviss novelization of the Clone Wars movie they mentioned that Jabba was asexual. I choose too call them all 'him' and avoid the question. I think that's how the films address the issue anyway. Hell, I liked when Jabba was a yellow simian looking dude. But that was in the old Marvel comics, and no one follows that.

OK, back to the putty mines...

His Flirty side.

I added more Green Stuff to the back of his head after I realized I'd put too many folds on his back. I also defined the nostrils more as well and his forehead. If I made the tongue hang out over his lips he'd look silly, so I pushed it back inside his mouth. And the cigar just seemed like a nice affectation for a crime lord.

I'm not sure when I'll get this guy painted. I want to give the green stuff plenty of time to cure. As it stands he won't even get primed till tomorrow morning. That means next week is the earliest he'll see paint. Till then I think I'll find something else to sculpt, because this was fun.

Gotta agree.

As for enlarging the Dewback: I would just add to what you have there and play it by ear.
With a green stuff 'skin' it should work out just fine, and add about 15-20% visually anyway.

I think a the Stormtroopers on it at the moment is too small compared to the woodiepedia pic above.

A mini the same size as the imperial assault one should look right I think.

I've been considering it. That's the reason I'm not in a hurry to paint it yet. I know next to nothing about casting, and I fear the Super Sculpey will be destroyed in the casting process.

I don't know if the dewback needs to be any bigger

I think a the Stormtroopers on it at the moment is too small compared to the woodiepedia pic above.

A mini the same size as the imperial assault one should look right I think.

Someone on the DMs Craft Forum said the same thing. I think I'll just keep the Dewback as is and make some new riders. (cut up WOTC bendy plastic to the rescue.) This will be great, because I have six of these beasts already. Three mounted and three unmounted should be fine. Can't think of a reason I'd even need more.

The SuperSculpey should be fine as long as you use an RTV mold and good mold release agent. The sculpt looks good, by the way.

Good call to leave the Dewback as is.

Looking forward to more.

OK, back to the putty mines...

on WEG material Hutts are Hemaphroditic

Thank you darthgus, rumacara and kidterminal. I'm always elated to see such nice comments.

So, a question. How much bigger is the Imperial Assault Stormtrooper on the left vs. the Action Fleet one on the right?

I'm trying to figure out how much larger I need to make another Action Fleet toy, if I decide to sculpt it to the right size. This one...

I'm not saying this is my next project, but it's a front runner right now. Let me know what you think.

They are perfectly in scale with the WEG stormtroopers and look pretty good after a removal of mold lines and a repaint:

Looks like its head and shoulders bigger... so about 20% larger should work. Perhaps find some dinosaur models to use as a base.

Thanks everyone for the advice. In the long run I think I'll stick with the Action Fleet Dewbacks sized as they are. I'll be re-painting them though. In fact I have one downstairs that just got a good scrubbing with paint stripper. I'll prime it up and see what I can do with it.

Update time. Over the weekend I made some more terrain. I built Three Sliding Doors.

The doors are made of sheet plasticard that I cut up into layers and glued together. This is a heavily modified version of a DM's Craft project I found on YouTube. You can see from the middle one the door slides out of the top (the door is laying in front) making it easy to show if the door is open or not. I know this is a Star Wars thread but I wanted something I could use for Space Hulk too. The doors are 50mm wide (2 inches). I have another couple in process, and I plan to make at least six more. I'm also planning to make a 75mm (3 inches) or 100mm (4 inches) across door that separates in the middle. Who wouldn't want a functioning blast door?

I also painted up a droid. This is Captain Rex, the pilot from the Star Tours shuttle I painted earlier in the thread.

Sorry I didn't get Sculpey the Hutt painted yet. I'm lucky I didn't rush to prime him though. The rattle can of Testors Light Earth that I was planning to use was bad. It dripped paint all over the place. Made a mess of some other figures, but the sculpt is safe. Anyway, more to come.

Nice doors btw.

Thank You Commander Vyper. I'm talking with a buddy right now about doing a casting of the Hutt. I'll probably have to break the cigar arm off, but that's no real problem. Mike thinks even that might not be nessessary. We'll see.

Update time. This is just a W.I.P. shot of an experiment. This figure still needs more details (and hands) but here it is so far.

From watching Tom Mason's YouTube videos I got the idea of doing a sculpt using Green Stuff wrapped around a wire armature, with layers of Super Sculpey over the top. The polymer clay is applied before the Green Stuff has a chance to cure. This way the clay has something to hold it on the wire armature. Tom Mason used Fimo for this, but I wondered if I could use Super Sculpey instead. Turns out it works just fine. This is supposed to be a Givin, an obscure alien race from Star Wars that I'm pretty sure Fantasy Flight won't be making any of anytime soon. I'll be adding a vest of jacket, as well as hands and probably a blaster. What Star Wars character goes around without a blaster? Or maybe I'll have him holding a hydro-spanner. My games need more unarmed people in them.

Quick update. The Givin sculpt is done. There's another sculpt I started as well.

The one on the left still needs a weapon in his raised hand, and two additions to his head. I'll let this one be a surprise. I'm calling the Givin done because I don't feel like working on it any more. It's not a great sculpt, but I learned a number of things while making it, so that much counts as a success. I should have it primed and maybe painted over the weekend.

Update time. I only have two miniatures painted to show this week. There are a few more figures in the pipeline, but I really wanted to get these out there. Here are the Given sculpt and a power droid.

The face of the Givin is a little crude but the jacket came out really good. On the whole I like him and I'm certain your sculpting skills will improve. The metal texture on the droid is well done.

I have to agree with you both. The face isn't great, but to be honest I wasn't completely satisfied with the rest of the figure either. The hands are way too big, and the jacket is kinda puffy. He'll make a fine addition to the background of a scene, and that's all I was hoping for at the moment. Lots to learn about making faces in that size. Hutts and monsters are far more forgiving then your normal 35mm figure. I should get back to sculpting next week.

Another update. This time I have three figures from Imperial Assault. First up, the Rebel Saboteurs.

Not the worst figure, but did we really need two of these? Not my best paint job either, but I did paint the Rebellion Firebrid symbol on the shoulder, just like the art shows. I mean, why wouldn't you want to advertise that you're part of the rebellion when your job is to sneak into places so you can plant explosives and break stuff?

Here is the Brilliant Engineer figure from the Twin Shadows expansion, Saska Teft.

I really like this figure. It's a pretty straight forward sculpt that looks good with a quick paint job. I did myself no favors by taking such a close pictures. I swear that eye doesn't look that bad in real life.

Now back to the putty mines. I have figures to make.

Thank you kidterminal and von Lucky.

Painting the Imperial Assault figures is so much easier then re-painting the WOTC stuff. Mostly because you don't have to strip the original paint or spray over the original paint and hope it doesn't come out too tacky. And of course there's the bendy plastic issues. The Imperial Assault figures do bend and the mold lines can be tricky at times, but it's nothing compared with most of the WOTC figures. While I seriously wish FFG would give us metal figures, or even hard plastic, this plastic is much better then WOTC bendy plastic, or Mantic, or most of the other cheap plastics. You can scrape the mold lines on IA figures. I don't do it too much, but it's nice to have the option.

The big benefit of the WOTC stuff is the price and the number of available sculpts. It's hard to beat a collection of miniatures that were released in the hundreds over the course of years. I'd love to see FFG cover all the different droids from Star Wars, but unless they can find a way to make each figure change the way the game plays, they just won't be making the figures. Hell, it's taking them to the third expansion to release Princess Leia. I somehow can't see them making the bartender of the Mos Eisley cantina or Cloud City Guards, or Luke in something other then his farm boy dudes.

The WOTC sculpts are hear to stay because of the variety which is my main issue with the FFG figure line. I haven't had any trouble stripping the WOTC figures, I've found it easy.

Actually there is supposedly another Luke coming soon, just like X-Wing, Imperial Assault is supposedly getting a Force Awakens thing soon that will probably have the older versions of the classic heroes along with the new ones.

This is great news for me. I'm getting every single figure from Imperial Assault, so more variety is always a good thing. I just hope they make some of the Star Wars Rebels characters as well. They are releasing the Ghost and the Imperial Assault Cruiser from that show for X-Wing, so they must have some respect for it.

The gun isn't great but it works for now. I was really surprised how difficult getting the ears smooth was. There's a loop of thin wire inside each ear that's pinned into the head. (It was weird drilling two holes into the miniature's head for some reason. It might have been the spirals of green stuff that came out of those holes.) Let me know what you think.

I think that it was on Beasts of War, though it may have been elsewhere shortly after the leak of the coming set that's basically a clone of the starter set, but with the Episode 7 X-Wing and TIE's, Fantasy Flight said they were working on other sets for all parts of the Star Wars line to take advantage of the movie.

Thank you uti long smile, kidterminal, SotF and rumacara. I love the old Star Wars comics. The early ones are kinda silly, but once you get to the post Empire Strikes Back stuff they rock. The Tarkin story is one of my favorite Star Wars stories of any medium.

kidterminal, I did end up adding a barrel to the gun, as well as a couple extra details. Not sure when I'll get Jaxxon painted. I've been sculpting. And I just got a Playstation 4 with Destiny. For some reason I haven't felt like working on minis lately.

Quick update. I sculpted another figure recently. It's a simple human figure without any equipment or clothing.

He's an experiment to see if I could make something more realistic. I didn't want to hide my mistakes with alien heads or bulky clothes. It's not perfect, but it's an improvement. Oh, and it's my first time working with mixed Fimo over Green Stuff, just like Tom Mason does it in his videos.

Let me know what you think. I really would like some honest feedback on this.

Thank you guys. von Lucky, I think you're right. I had the same issue when I made my Star Trek character. Obviously I don't like to make butts. kidterminal, I have to give a lot of the credit for proportions to Tom Mason. His two videos on making an armature actually gave measurements for where to bend the wire to get the proportions right. It's not foolproof, but it helps.

Quick Non-Update. I really don't have anything new to show. Just a goodie I found at the flea market today.

Some plasticard and putty to fill the gaps. Replace the cockpit and give it a good paint job and I'll have something interesting to put on the table. Not bad for $6.

No Dash Rendar. I never liked the design of that guy. With his bulky padded armor and metal chest piece, he looked like Rob Liefeld's rejected design for Cable. The character never bothered me, but oh those silly shoulder pads. (Guess who I will not be making a miniature of anytime soon.)

Not an update. I just got a new camera and wanted to test it out. Unfortunately I don't have anything new to show off. Then I remembered I hadn't taken any pictures of the miniatures from the Imperial Assault box set all together. So here it is.

Yeah, I almost felt guilty asking six buck,
So I found one step the thrift store. Couldn't find the missing canopy and big gun. Made the mistake of asking the gf if she thought a good deal for $10?
She said no of course.  And since she had the money at the time nothing I could do. :-(

Took a break from sculpting to paint a miniature or two. I finally got Jaxxon the Lepi painted.

And here's a shot for scale.

Not my best work, but I'm happy with it. (until I make another one.)

Thank you Von Lucky and Cymril. Von Lucky, the colors are based on the comic book. I do love that classic 70's comic book coloring. Explains why my historical miniatures all look too bright.

Update time. It's been over two months since I posted the Jaxxon sculpt. For some reason I've been in a Star Wars mood this week. Can't figure out why. I'll start with four Heavy Stormtroopers.

These are the Stormtroopers from the Twin Shadows expansion to Imperial Assault. I had these guys block painted for months now, but just couldn't work up the steam to get them finished till this week. The thin layers of white over Nuln Oil washed white is time consuming but it sure looks good when it's finished.

Next up, Kayn Somos, Stormtrooper Commander.

This is another Villain Pack from Imperial Assault. It seemed like a good idea to paint him up while I was painting the Heavy Stormtroopers. I went with the orange pauldron just so I could have some color. I'm not sure if this is correct for his rank, but I think he looks better this way.

And finally, something that isn't predominately white, C-3P0.

I just finished building the Bandai 1/12th scale C-3P0 model and wanted to finish this miniature while the colors were fresh in my head. I really need to go back and fix those eyes. I swear they didn't look that bad when I painted them.

I'll be painting up some more Star Wars stuff for a while, so more to come.

Thank you Elbows, Von Lucky and Constable Bertrand. Stormtroopers take a lot of time to paint, but man they look good when they're finished.

It's time for another update. This time I have even more imperial Assault miniatures, as well as a couple WOTC metal figures. I'll start with the Royal Guard Champion from Imperial Assault.

It's a simple paint job, but sometimes you need to stick to the basics and not over complicate the look. A basic block paint of dark gray and red. A GW Nuln Oil wash over the whole thing. Pick out some details with dry-brushing and some thinned layers and it's done. I think it keeps the comic book look, which is where this character comes from.

Next up, a pair of WOTC metal figures from their old RPG character lines. These are a Rodian Scoundrel and a Wookie Scout.

These two are painted as Greedski and Hutchiwalla. They're undercover detectives working the mean streets of Coruscant. These guys are based on one of my favorite 70's cop shows.

And finally, my favorite character from Star Wars, R2-D2 from Imperial Assault. Pictured with his buddy C-3PO.

Artoo looks a little big when compared with C-3PO. I'm not sure if he's too big or C-3PO is too small. Here's a shot with a Stormtrooper for comparison. What do you guys think?

Let me know what you think. And as always, there's more to come.

Thank You Jimbibbly. 3PO is a bit small, but the Imperial Assault range was never about complete scale accuracy. I can live with it.

Update time. I'll start off with some W.I.P. shots of an Action Fleet Landspeeder I'm cleaning up. Nothing special. Just filling in gaps with green stuff and plasticard. The black paint is from an earlier conversion job I did. I thought a black speeder would look cool. Turns out, not so much.

Much like the AT-ST I built earlier in the thread, this model is a delight to put together. I went for a heavily weathering, but this time I stuck with a streaking lines look instead of the sponge applied paint chipping. Here's the obligatory shot with an Imperial Assault Stormtrooper. I think the scales match perfectly.

Thank you everyone.

Elbows, I am repainting the land speeder right now. I wasn't a fan of the black either, which one of the reasons I decided to tackle this speeder again.

Muzfish4, the Imperial Assault miniatures are pretty damn fun to paint. I've had some complaints but at least we're getting new Star Wars figures that we can paint. And the plastic is less bend then the collectible stuff. Now if only we can get some more poses for them.

jimbibbly, you're one of the guys who inspires me. I figure if you post so many additions to your thread I need to up my game.

Justin Buck, everyone wants to see more WEG minis. Please post them when you get them done.

Agis, I have to agree. We just can't have enough Star Wars threads. Oh, and you are one of the others who drive me to keep going.

Not sure if anyone wants a painting step by step, but here's one anyway.
I masked up the windscreen and re-primed the speeder in Testors Light Earth. That's one of my four go-to primers. (The others being Black, White and Light Sea Grey) Then I went over it with a series of streaky coats of Orange, then a Safety Yellow, then a light Yellow. (These aren't the actual Reaper colors I used. My paints are upstairs and I'm feeling lazy.) I painted the red accents free hand. Then I sponged on some dark grey and steel, along with some of the yellows to brake up the pin stripes. Covered most of it with GW Seraphim Sepia along with some GW Nuln Oil in the panel lines and grill. Painted on some Silver at the edges for a chipping effect too.

And here's a shot of the new speeder next to the one I painted earlier, and an Imperial Assault Stormtrooper. Scale looks good to me.

Exactly - it really looks like a used car from our own galaxy that isnīt well maintained, yet too valuable to let it die - therefore perfectly convincing.

Thank You jimbibbly, Constable Bertrand, Nimrod and Michi. I had a lot of fun painting that Landspeeder. Wasn't sure the yellow was going to work until I started covering it with stippling and washes.

Here are the Imperial Assault minis I talked about before. Decided not to crop them since that's were Photobucket and I were having troubles. First there's the Wookie Warriors.

And this is Biv Bodhrik, Vengeful Guerrilla. He's a player character from the Twin Suns expansion box.

Nothing special for these guys. Just some dabs of different browns on the Wookies' fur under a sepia wash and I toned down the colors on Biv. I really should go back and find a more exciting color scheme for the Guerrilla but I just wasn't feeling inspired by this guy. Also looks like I need to do a second dull coat.
More to come.

Thank you Ironworker. So glad to see you're doing a Star Wars project now.

Update time. (If Photobucket lets me.) I'll start with a couple more shots of the Snowspeeder.

A number of people have given me ideas about how to fix the painting on the Snowspeeder. Unfortunately none of them agreed what was wrong. So I decided to fix the one thing that was bugging me about the paint job: the red stripes. The streaks of white weathering on the stripes was washing them out too much, which gave the model a dingy look. I wanted the thing to have that Star Wars used universe look, but at a certain point you have to put some colors that pop or it all looks dull. I also darkened the engine grill and harpoon gun on the back and painted in the steps on the side of the speeder. Finally , while I was breaking up the red stripes with a sponge effect I went back and sponged some off-white in places to lighten the whites. Overall I think it brings it closer to the original look, even if it isn't an exact match to the filming model.

And here is a repainted Action Fleet Dewback.

I still need to cut up a WOTC Stormtrooper and make a rider for this guy. If I do repaint anymore of these I'll cut the rains down (I'm sure that's not how it's spelled.) and replace them with green stuff.

Finally a little what-the-hell project work in progress.

I didn't want to paint anything last night, but I wanted to do something. That's when I found a vending machine toy in my coat pocket. I've been buying these things for some time in hopes of using the bubble halves. I've already used a couple as domes for my Tatooine buildings. Last night I got the idea of making a window for a spaceship cockpit. I started cutting out strips of plasticard and gluing them on the outside surface. After getting the first stripes on I just added small angled bits to the stripes and edges to give the thing some details. I'm really happy with how it turned out, but now I can't decide whether it should be a cockpit window or the face of a mad computer.

I made one more discovery this morning while taking these shots. The Testors spray can caps fit perfectly into the lip of the clear half of the vending machine bubbles. Now I won't have to figure out how to make the body of the tube that the window goes on. And Photobucket let me post photos eventually. Not a bad morning

More to come.

In ancient time, I had a Star Wars project. It thrived and grew on a regular basis. Then I got lazy, and didn't upload pictures of things I was doing.
Well I want to change that, so I'll start off with the newest addition to the garage, the TIE Crawler. Otherwise known as the Century Tank. This is easily the silliest vehicle in the Empires arsenal. And that's saying a lot.

Shown with Imperial Assault Stormtrooper, for scale.

Here shown with an AT-ST, also from Imperial Assault. It looks a little big next to the IA AT-ST, but I still like it.

This is the miniature from the WOTC bendy plastic range. I did a bit of seam filling. Otherwise it was treated to the same weathering techniques I used for all my other Imperial ground vehicles. Let me know what you think. Hopefully I'll post something new before the next year rolls around this time.

Excellently painted and modelled, even if the concept is very silly (every hundred metres the pilot has to climb out and clean the blaster barrels).

Okay I am only guessing the guns are under the cockpit.

Yep. The two guns from the usual TIE fighter, with an extra one mounted on the bottom of the ball. Took a front-on shot of the century tank sitting on a large GW base to match the trooper's base.

I just read that the lower blaster was retractable. I'm sure cleaning out that compartment was fun for some lowly technician. The only advantages I can see to this thing is the one-man design. They were mass-produced and cheap to make, using recycled parts and designs. That's got to be a comfort to the pilot/gunner.

Yep, now I need to paint up the other two I have. I just got an idea for a game.

Here are all three of my Imperial Assault AT-STs. I hated that ridiculous side weapons on the prototype walker so I just use the commander to designate which guy is the prototype driver. That is, if I ever play any of the actual game.

that Tie-crawler is daft, I mean why would you put tracks on a light fighter, it's like sticking tank tracks on a Zero!

Just a quick addition for today. Here are some Echo Base troopers that have been sitting around primed for way too long. Over half a year.

This is the first time I've made snow bases. Now I need to make another AT-ST with a snow base. Will it ever end?

Oh My God. PhotoBucket is letting me post some photos. Lets do this before it changes it's mind.
(And I swear the focus was better before I downloaded these onto my computer. Time for an upgrade.)

First up, a pair of Wampas, for imperial Assault

I gave only one of them the full bloody claws and teeth look. Sometimes I want a grizzly looking monster and sometimes I want something a little more serious.

and here are four HK Assassin Droids from Imperial Assault.

For the HKs, I went with a metalic green color I found in an image search. I'm not a fan of the dull brown ones that kept coming up. Now I wish I'd done two in green and the other two in different colors.just for variety.

That metallic green looks great.
Is that straight out of the pot or did you mix it, or are you drybrushing metallics over a green base?
Title: Re: Michka's Star Wars project (Wampas and HK droids added 2/8/2017)
Post by: Michka on February 09, 2017, 12:53:46 AM
For the metalic green I painted the figures steel, with a heavy dry-brush of silver over that. Then I covered the whole thing in one of GW's Green shades, Biel-Tan Green. From there I painted the black areas with Vellajo German Grey, followed with a Nuln Oil shade. Stippled all over with with more German Grey, then stippled with more Silver. Paint the gun and done.

Sorry hubbabubba. That was a lot more then you asked.

Got a few terrain pieces for tonight. Staring out with two Action Fleet toys.

The Ronto is basically just a repaint. I pulled the small Jawa off the back, since he was just too small. The Escape Pod was cut on an angle, glued to the base and done. Oh, and a bit of painting as well.

These are two Generators from Secret Weapon.

These looked really nice in the package, but once I got them primed I was surprised at how rough the surface was. I'm used to a certain amount to rough texture on Shapeways stuff. I just don't expect it on manufactured stuff. They turned out well in the end, but I'll look a little closer next time.

Hello Everybody. Thank you for all the nice replies. About a year a a half ago, I posted shots of a Hutt I was sculpting. I considered getting it cast, but that never really went anywhere. Just got too distracted with other things. Well a couple weeks ago I saw Sculpey the Hutt sitting on a shelf and decided it was time to paint him up. So here he is.

Thank you everyone. Von Lucky, I'm sorry I didn't get around to answering your question. Really sorry because now I can't remember exactly what I used. It was a series of Vallejo dark greens for the green parts, with a GW's Nuln Oil wash over that area. The underbelly and face were a combination of Vallejo Khaki and Reaper Olive Skin Highlight for highlights. I went over that area with GW's Agrax Earthshade and Seraphim Sepia. I think there's some thinned dark green in there too.

Well I haven't been idle here in the Fortress of Michka-tude. For some time now I've been unhappy with the grey bases I've been using for my Star Wars stuff. I finally gave in and started re-doing the bases on all my Imperial Assault miniatures. Here is a shot of the last batch of guys to get the outdoor terrain effect.

It just wouldn't be one of my projects if I didn't change the bases over every once in a while.

I running a West End Games Star Wars RPG this weekend, and I wanted to use miniatures for it. I decided to use my Sedition Wars miniatures and terrain for part of the scenario. Problem was, I didn't have all my terrain painted yet. So I've been furiously painting up the terrain set over the weekend. I can now proudly say that most of this terrain set is painted. Here are the technical pieces from the set. (Trooper TK-888 shown for scale.)

And here are the icky bio-mechanical pieces. Gee, nothing scary about those.

I can show these off here because none of my players are on the forum. Most of them aren't into miniatures anyway. But my buddy Josh likes gaming with minis, and he's coming from out of town so I wanted to run something big. Besides, I have to use all these Star Wars miniatures sometime.

The Bio-Mechanical stuff is also from the Sedition Wars terrain set. That terrain set is absolutely jam packed with cools stuff. I still have to finish the four crates and the two sentry gun emplacements. And the six corpses tokens.
And then there are the doors. Oh so many doors. I may never get those all painted.

Thank you Andym. You are an inspiration to me, so your praise is most valued.

I have a psuedo-After Action Report. I ran a Star Wars RPG this weekend for some old gaming buddies. We use the old West End Games D6 rules, so the pace is quick and it's simple enough to easily change things on the fly. I took photos during the game. Unfortunately I forgot to put the memory card in the camera, so those pictures don't actually exist. Instead I've tried to replicate what happened from fuzzy memories of what turned out to be a very fun game. Sorry if this is a little long. Here goes...

Our heroes (all former Rebel soldiers and mercenaries) discover people on the planet Sedwarr are disappearing at an alarming rate. When their waitress disappears before returning with their drinks, they go to investigate. After a quick gun battle with some Stormtroopers who were kidnapping the waitress, they grab the trooper's transport and return to the base to find out what is gong on. The Imperials are guarding a Medical research lab, hidden in an old mining tunnel network near the starport. They are confronted at the first security checkpoint.

After another quick battle (They got the drop on the Stormtroopers) they spot a man stumbling around a corner at the back of the cave.

He's muttering incoherently. Suddenly he grabs his head. His head starts to pulse, then expand. Growing larger and larger. He softly says "Oh, I guess I was infected too." And his head falls off. It plops to the ground. Then starts to grow legs. Lots of legs. A tendril sprouts out of the back of his head.

It opens it's glowing green eyes, and then attacks. It leaps onto Brand, a Tech specialist. His buddy Alex, the ex-Clone Trooper bounty hunter waste no time in shooting the thing with his blaster shotgun. The blast destroys the evil head thing. (And does a little damage to Brand as well.) A black cloud seeps from the dead things body. Then the cloud attacks one of the Rebels. This time it's Grogan, a Demolitions Specialist who has spent more then his fair share of time in a Bacta tank.

From here things get kinda fuzzy. Our heroes find a hidden entrance into the lab.

They are confronted by creepy Cyber-Zombie Things. They find more Black Clouds. They discover that the Black Clouds will infect them, possibly turning them into Cyber-Zombie things, or maybe just making their swollen head fall off. They discover this the hard way, by getting infected. A med-pack will cure the infection if used correctly. As it turns out, so will a Stun-Blast.

The action is fast, furious and not a little ridiculous as one character after another is pulled down into a near-by pit by a pair of Dianogas (Trash-compactor monsters). Some of the characters dive into the watery pit to save their friends. Some dive in to escape yet more of the black clouds. During all this, an alert goes off, announcing that the facility will self destruct in ten minutes.

Alex the Bounty Hunter gets tired of waiting so he goes off on his own. He finds a door and opens it. Inside he finds a Female Cyber-Zombie Thing that attacks him.

Oh, and he notices that the weird purple Bio-Mechanical things growing out of the ground disgorge even more Black Clouds. Alex eventually kills the Female Cyber-Zombie Thing with the help of Brand. At this point they have learned their lesson. They really shouldn't split up.

But Grogan hasn't learned a damn thing. Grogan goes off to check out one of the other doors by himself. He finds some living quarters. Living quarters with lots of lots of Cyber-Zombie Things.

So Grogan shuts that door.

At this point Alex and Brand are checking out a pair of terminals they found in the room they were in.

Brand discovers he can use this Life Support terminal to purge all the Black Clouds out of the lab area. Alex figures out how to shut down the Self Destruct. Unfortunately while trying to gain remote control of the doors, he trips a security override that opens all of the doors and disables his terminal.

Meanwhile Job, a retired Rebel soldier who knows everyone, has an idea. He'll climb into the ventilation shafts Brand used to purge the Black Clouds and find a way out of the lab. Unfortunately, there's something living in the ventilation shafts.

Fortunately for Job, Brand unwittingly purges the ventilation system with a hydro-flush which ejects the old rebel and all the Cyber-Zombie Head Things out of a hatch. A hatch one thousand meters above a drainage reservoir. Job saves himself, the heads do not. At this point all of the characters are trying to get to one of the ventilation hatches to escape.

Brand is charting the best path through the ventilation shafts when he and Alex are interrupted by three monstrous creatures that have come through the open doorway.

They scramble into the ventilation shaft just as the biggest of the creatures fires his massive beam weapon.

With the security doors open, all the Cyber-Zombie Things from the Living Quarters go hunting for Grogan.

They chase Grogan and Starsayr (an elite gunman and old friend of Grogans) into the Infirmary where a pair of experimental Auto-Docs caught the demolitions specialist's interest. Starsayr tries to hold off the mobs while Grogan, who is severely wounded at this point, tries to get into the ventilation hatch in his area. Starsayr miraculously takes out the mob of creatures, and with the help of the just arrived Brand and Alex, they get Grogan into the shaft. From there they meet up with Job in the shuttle. As they fly away from the lab Grogan uses what little energy he has left to reactive the self-destruct. The research lab explodes.

And that's all that I can remember. Like I said, it was a terrific game. Lots of fun was had by all.

Been a while since I posted here. I've been working on urban terrain, with an eye towards using it for both Star Wars and Warhemmer 40K. See, if you scrape off the skulls and eagles you can use the same pieces for both. This first piece is a Pegasus Hobbies Power Station. My local hobby shop owner was getting rid of some of his old stuff and I got to it before anyone else. Lucky me, as these are not easy to find anymore.

Here is the ubiquitous Imperial Bastion. There were a couple skulls and eagles I couldn't get off. Well I could have but I really didn't feel like working that hard. It still needs some more dirt and grim though.

And a shot of both of them side by side.

I'm thinking about adding a raised platform under the power station. This would add height, increase the footprint of the piece, and add another level to play area. If I use the same grey for the platform that I use on may of my other building it would also unite the colors. then again I might be over thinking this.

More miniatures to come. I just need to finish the bases. Is it just me, or do bases take longer to finish them most miniatures?

Thank you War in 15mm and Ultravilliasmurf.
Dr. The Viking, many of the WOTC Star Wars figures are still easy to find on E-Bay. And if you're looking for the basic rank and file they're quite affordable. (Unless you're talking about the metal ones. Those are impossible to find cheap.)

More terrain. This time it's all re-purposed 40K stuff. I'll start with the Munitorum Armoured Containers.

I shaved off all the skulls from the sides of the containers. The gothic architecture is still a dead give-away, as are the servo-skull door controls. I left the corner hawk-head hooks off them too. Means they won't stack well, but they also won't snag on gamer's sleeves while they move miniatures around. Otherwise they look pretty good. Setting this shot up gave me a couple ideas for scenarios. Looks like I'm gonna need a bunch more so I can have a proper maze.

Here are some old scatter terrain pieces. Most of these are out of the 3rd edition 40K box. I've used the barricades and tank traps many times in the past. I could never decide how to paint them, so I just used them primed black. I'm really happy with how the rust effect turned out. Now I have to avoid overusing this technique. A little rust goes a long way, even in the Grim Dark. But especially in a galaxy far, far away.

Most of the barrels are the old 40K ones. The rest are Tamiya 1/32 scale WWII models. I'm not saying they're perfect, but you have to look hard to see the difference. At table distance the differences willbe completely lost. There are 15 barrels in this shot. You'd think that would be enough, but now I want some more. It never ends.

I probably should have posted these in my 40K thread, but chances are I will use these for Star Wars games a lot more then I ever will for 40K. (Then again, there is Shadow War: Armageddon. The distractions are strong with this one.) Let me know what you think.

I like the dirty white as a choice for colour - something different.

Thanks Von Lucky. I based them on some barrels at work.

After spending lots of time on 40K stuff I'm finally back to a proper Star Wars project. I'll start with this TIE Fighter toy I repainted recently.

Here it is side-by-side with the original Action Fleet toy.

The scale isn't perfect. And it retains many of the toy aspects. That said, it look right next to the miniatures. I had a couple 1/48th scale TIE Fighter models. Those might be the right scale, but they're way too big for the gaming table. After seeing all the landed TIE Fighters in Star Wars Rebels I had to get these painted. There's a bunch more of these Action Fleet toys that have been waiting to be painted.

I also started making some terrain. Out of the clear blue I got the idea for a vendor stall. When I started looking for images I stumbled on production art from Rebels with this cool vendor stall design. This is a W.I.P. shot of where I'm at right now.

The silver bits are parts from the Pegasus Chemical Plant. Supposed to be a slop sink and a water pipe that this vendor is tapping into. Illegally, of course.

The wooden poles are BBQ skewers I cut down to size. I didn't have anything to attach wood to the plastic, so I cut plastic tube down and fitted it over the poles. The plastic tubes were glued to the plasticard building. The roof and shelves are still separate pieces till I get this thing painted. I plan to fill the shelves with jars (beads) and model parts after they're painted.

I'm hoping to get a few more vendors built, but this one will probably be the largest of the bunch.

The stall looks great, and let me add that I copied your color scheme when I did my Pegasus Power Plant... thank you.  Richard

Thank you Richard. When I saw your Power Plant I thought it looked familiar. I figured it was just a coincidence.

My favourite is that vendor stall.
Brilliant!

Great stuff! We've got a couple of those action fleet Ties. It's nice to see they fit so well with 28mm figs!

What a great project. I especially like the rust effect you got on those barricades...

Tried it for a few hours today...thank you very much....;)

Cheers,

Thank you Mason. I was gonna prime the stall over the weekend, but it's too darn hot outside for spray paint. This gives me time to tinker with it some. Maybe finish the shelves first.

Jimbibbley, it's always a pleasure.

Ooh Andym, I'd love to see what you do with your TIEs. My plans are to build airfield stairs for them. After seeing TIE Fighters parked on their solar panels in Rebels, I'm so relieved I don't have to make gantries and hangers.

You're welcome DonVoss. Look forward to seeing your rusty stuff!

I was just testing a new backdrop and found these rebel minis I hadn't taken shots of yet.

I think these were old Eureka miniatures. These were too big next to the WEG stuff. Next to the Imperial Assault miniatures they look just right. As an added bonus, I get more then one pose for Rebel troopers. What a concept! (ratsa-fratsa grumble-grumble-grumble)

Funny you talk about scale but they look good to me. Not that a Tie looks spacious and comfy.

Grimm, I'm not a rivet counter when it comes to Star Wars. I try my best to get close, but I'm always willing to cheat size in favor of a cool toy for the table.

I finished the stall. I'll start with some W.I.P. shots. Here's the stall with some extra ground clutter added to the side. Bits of sprue, cocktail sticks and toothpicks all cut up and glued in place.

And these are the shelves. I added a bunch of different stuff to them. 40K bits, cheap beads, small shells and cut up sprue.

And here is the finished product.

You can see the underside of the slop sink in this shot.

And some detail shots of the shelves. Very sloppy painting, but they're just supposed to be for flavor. I added magnet sheet to the bottom to the shelves, and to the inside of the stall. That way I can remove the stalls but I don't have to keep track of them.

And I painted up two more Action Fleet TIE Fighters.

I masked off the canopy front and top hatch on the lead TIE with Tamiya tape. That particular TIE was masked off over a year ago. Since then I decided the clear canopy wasn't worth the effort. It's nice to have one fighter that's subtly different from the rest. It could be an Ace, or maybe that's the one with the defector in it.

Thank you Mason, Malebolgia and blacksoilbill. I do have more stalls planned.

In fact, here is the start of another one.

I still need to add a base. Then I can paint this guy up and start on a third stall. I'd probably have more done, but I spent last weekend finding a new image hosting site, and raging at the one I was using. I've re-uploaded a few older shot back onto this thread, but there's no way I'll get all of them back. Maybe it's time to start that blog I've always wanted.
