Title: WEG Star Wars - Battle Report ''Storming the Rebel Base''
Post by: Chico on April 28, 2015, 12:31:45 PM

So along with all the other Star Wars love that's exploded of late I decided it was time to crack on with some WEG Star Wars.

Now the plan is too have 2 gaming forces rather then having set scenes for each film so I've gone with a uniform base style.

Up first is Darth and 2 501st Stormtroopers:

Good start!

Not sure if it's an artefact of the photo, or clever painting on your part (maybe both?;) ), but I love how glowy Vader's sabre is!

Thanks I have a few others painted as well but nothing exciting.

I'm guessing both too hehe, it is quite shiny in real life but not quite as much. I'm guessing it's the gloss varnish that hitting the light in the photo.

A few more bits painted up:

I ordered the West End Games Star Wars Minitures Battles V.2 (SWBM2) of the rules of Amazon for £16 rather expensive for my tastes but it beats using PDF's as theres nothing better then a hard copy of a set of rules in my mind.

So I'll be building 2 forces by that book and painting up odds and ends that aren't really game-able (Droids, Ewoks, Sand people, Civs ect)

Very cool! Looks like a nice force so far. That price doesn't sound so bad. It's a game that's been out of production for something like twenty years, and there's some movie coming out that might be driving prices.

Aye £16 doesn't seem much until you take a look on the US Amazon and the same copy in multiples selling for $3-4. Which is more then likly down to WEG being a US company I'm guessing and selling many more books/rpgs over there over the years.

And yes I'm a cheapskate hehe ;)

Oh speaking of the movie, hopefully I should have this finished by then :D

these look great, SWMB is a highly underrated ruleset. I've set myself the task of repainting my lot plus the extra bits I've picked up on ebay over the years. BTY the 25mm range from GZG are a great match to the WEG 25mm, really useful if you want to add a few squads of generic troops

Thankies, aye I've some GZG and Denizen true 25's to add to mix, mostly for Rebels but a few for Bounty Hunters. Also will be using Grendel's Nexus Storm Strider as AT-ST's :)

I like the paint schemes on the stormtroopers, the black breaks up all the white.

Han Solo looks awesome!

Thanks for the Denizen tip, hadn't come across those before, they even have an Arthur Dent...

Also, I picked up a couple of the action fleet sets, while they're closer to 20mm the X-wings make great scenery and the AT-ST's work well:

these pop up on ebay and loose in charity shops from time to time

They are quite good if a little pain in the ass to order from and lacking many helpful pictures.. still not as bad as GZG which are missing most pictures hehe

In size.. doubtful. It scale I've wanted to do it in 15mm first but options were even more limited then running 25/28mm.

Oh and no one tell the wife! She already thinks I'm mad for getting my own range done hehe

Progress continues on the 2 SWMB forces with the Rebellion gaining both Luke and a small squad of Rebel Troopers.

Nice little figures if a tad fiddly to paint, you may also noticed I changed their uniform to one which I prefer, ohhh I'm such a Rebel (Get it? hehe) not painting everything to cannon.

''Force'' Update

Oh the puns are strong with me! And you love it you tart!

Have no fear the WEG Star Wars project is alive and well and I've just been busy painting up other toys and been a wee bit sick. But I still been buying and trading for them an now sitting on a small horde of WEG figures. Highlights include 30 odd Stormtroopers, all the main cast, The Emperor & some Royal Guard and much much more.

Anyway here's what's been painted so far, except the Imperial Droid which got missed out the pictures.. no doubt pretending he was a Assassin Droid and hiding.

Anyway a nice package turned up from Ebay today while I was at the Dr's about my on going eye problems containing a few WEG minis and the WEG Imperial Entanglements rulebook (Yay for dirty cheap buy too).

I've always found the 2 Sith rule restrictive in SW cannon, but reading into the EU (Expanded Universe) I found 3 temping get out clauses (There are more but I liked these options).

1: Use Darth Maul and his brother Savage Opress (A Nightbrother who became a Sith Lord). Maul survived being sliced into 2 and carried on despite Darth Sidous choosing a new apprentice.

2: Run with a pair of Dark Force or rival Sith users outside of the Bane's ''Lords of the Sith''

3: Dark Jedi, Jedi turned to the Darkside for power and glory.

So sod it I thought.. Dark Jedi with a young apprentice it is :)

Using the WEG's Lesser Force Users as a base I made chopped off their hands and used Wargames Factory Saxon hands and spears as the lightsabers.

The male Dark Jedi also as his hair shaved off and will get a little green stuff goatie.. much like myself heh..

I'm thinking grey robes and purple lightsaber for the female Apprentice and orange for the Master.

Anyway thanks for looking

Good Conversions. I look forward to seeing them with some paint.
I always thought the two Sith restriction was a pain too. Then they started adding Dark-Siders like Asajj Ventress and General Grievous to the mix and I figured the gloves where off. Besides, in the Tales of the Old Republic there was an entire Sith Empire to choose from.

Was Greivous a force user? I only though he was just a Kaleesh adept skilled with a Lightsaber. Aye Ventress though is where I first thought about turned Jedi :)

Might do a few Non-Banite Sith as small Warband of 5/6 lesser Force users backed up by Fringe elements like Bounty Hunters and Mercs :)

I'm not sure. I'm not as up to date on my Star Wars lore as I once was. I tend to look at the Star Wars universe through WEG tinted glasses, so I figured General Greivous was a kind of Alien Student of the Force. That's based on pure speculation on my part, but that's how we all looked at Star Wars in the old days.

To paraphrase Egg from Big Trouble in Little China, "Star Wars is like a buffet. We take what we like and ignore the rest."

So tonight at my local gaming club (Watford Wargaming Federation) I'm getting to play a game of SWMB2 for the first time and with another willing victim.. er ..er opponent.

Now as its our first time (Cue candles and mood lighting) we are keeping it small and somewhat easy as I'm also providing both sides and I hate playing with unpainted toys I just went with what I had all ready painted and rushed a couple more Rebels though to even the odds.

The Rebel Force is led by Mr Han Solo (Or Solo Han-Job around these parts) with 2 Squads of 6 Rebel Soldiers.

Keeping it somewhat themed and even the Empire force is led by Boba Fett the arch Bounty Hunter backed up by 2 Squads of 6 Storm Troopers.

So heres hoping for a good game and Pt.2 to come tomorrow!

have fun! I haven't played in several years... but if I remember the rebels are generally better quality troopers, with even numbers they'd have the edge. One of my favourite parts of SWMB was being able to call in an airstrike, something I always gave my imperials...

It turned out rather even, Rebels have higher Dex so could hit and Stormies had higher Str (Armour) so stopped more blasters. I'm sure we got some rules wrong like Morale but a few more play thoughs and we should get the hang of it :)

Honestly I'm not really interested in going full scale gaming with SW, never been a fan of large games I much prefer the skirmish level games  :)

40 odd a side and 1 or 2 vec I think will be my max gaming wise, plus this way I won't go crazy painting dozens of Stormies and Rebels hehe.

Oh for you lovely readers the good news is  my Denizen minis turned up today so the Rebels will be getting some grav bikes and elite armoured infantry  :)
Title: Re: WEG Star Wars - Elite Armoured Rebels (Denizen Miniatures)
Post by: Chico on June 07, 2015, 12:15:50 PM
Anyway for my ongoing Star Wars project I wanted some armoured elite quick response/bodyguard Rebels. Now as WEG never made anything I felt suitable I had to look elsewhere.

25mm Sci-Fi (Let alone Truescale) is rather hard to come by these days as most companies favour 28mm-32mm Heroic made popular by Citadel/GW.

Anyway to cut a long story short I bought some of these by Denizen:

The scale isn't too bad and not noticeable in game, plus I get some cheap Grav Speeders withut paying a arm/leg & left n00t for the WEG ones if/when they pop up on the market.

Simple paintjob matching the rest of my modified Rebel Uniforms and I'm rather happy other all. I have a few more Denizen figures both Gravs & Troopers plus a few other bits to use as Fridge elements like Bounty Hunters/Mercs.

Thanks for looking!

Aye I have a fair few of those too but alot of those sculpts are hit and miss and it's a real shame as I'd like to have more valid 25mm options, still looking for a good proxy of Imperial Soliders too as I'm not paying silly ebay prices for them (£4/5 each)

On a general note, game 2 of the ongoing themed campaign is next week.. spolier General Veers is coming :)

I've gone for a rather dirty and worn torn paint  scheme like they have been in the field for weeks on end as that lends itself to their Commando nature.

I bought these on Ebay part painted, so gave them a wash and highlight followed by the dirtying up and re-based them

I'd like to add to this unit but these are the only 3 I've managed to win on ebay and they seem that they are quite rare on there (Never seen any other Troopers listed, and only a few Ackbars).

Along with Imperial Troopers, Scout Troopers & Snow Troopers they are on my most wanted list.

Wednesday I'm playing game 2 of the ongoing Star Wars Campaign (Game 1 was http://oldhammeronabudget.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/weg-star-wars-battle-report-bounty_4.html (http://oldhammeronabudget.blogspot.co.uk/2015/06/weg-star-wars-battle-report-bounty_4.html)).  Which will see General Veers lead the renewed attack on the Rebel Base on Zan IV.

“Bounty hunters! We don’t need this scum.”

Boba will also looking for revenge against Solo for the Blaster wound in his leg and as such has brought some ''Friends'' with him.

Thanks for looking!
