A Long long time ago, well 3 weeks, in a galaxy far far away, well my hobby table, a building program has begun by a nefarious empire on a small desert planet in the outer rim.
A cooling tower of some kind rises out of the sands. (It's a dice tower!) Sadly even though I tested comparability with my dice at home the baffles moved while drying and the largest dice get stuck :(
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-y8IDz2uKbgM/VT95s7gwBQI/AAAAAAAABco/YlY8vBowbZs/s1600/IMAG0892.jpg)
Cheers
Matt.

Very interesting start. Looking forward to seeing where this goes...
-
You're so weak lol
Looking forward to seeing this progress (shame about the dice though).
cheers
James
-
I like the panelling 8)
So will this be part of your other project or is it some new arid sci-fi adventure?
-
and the largest dice get stuck :(
Made me lol. What a great idea though. Consider it stolen if I could get my arse into gear.
-
Great job on the Dice Tower Constable Bertrand, fantastic idea, sad to hear that one of the baffles moved.
-
Really cool! Nice to see that you keep on the endeavour despite the setback ;D
-
Very nice.
8)
You are still pushing it, though.
>:D
You're so weak lol
Well, at least a little of the blame has to go to you, does it not?
You evil pusher, you.
lol
-
To be fair to James, I had bendy plastics in my mits before he did! lol lol
The width of the dice is wider than the flat sides, and the dice moves on the points not the flats. Testing with the big die involved the flats.. you try putting your hand up in there.. so it was partly my fault too, but the baffle moved too.
Steve, our gaming is pretty ecclectic, I suspect part of what we are doing rather than a set build, but who knows once this new movie comes out. ;) so as such the fence will have some corrugated panneling once I've painted the brown fence. (What fence? See below) that will help tie it into a outer rim scrap town/post apocalypse vault cooling tower nicely.
The vent lid is removeable to insert the dice.
And another crappy phone photo of basing on 3mm perspex, with a wee fence.

No that isn't a DeafNala mushroom on the top, it's my lamp. ::)
Now come on Paul, start your SW set already, it's been on your back burner for ages now >:D Nothing like a new movie to motivate you!! :D
Cheers

I have had mine for years now too.
I just keep getting distracted with other things.
There are still a few things that I need to finish off first, as this kind of project could easily take over and keep me at it for a long, long time..
;)
I will get on to it soon, though, as the pull is getter harder to resist......
-
Well, at least a little of the blame has to go to you, does it not?

lol
No blame at all. I didn't put the scalpel in his hand lol

The filthy little Jawas direct some potential customers towards their wares.
The Tuskens are easily excited by what the Jawas are offering.
For a summary of my method on bendy plastics, and how not to make them sticky, check out my blog http://makeandpaint.blogspot.com.au/2015/05/wotc-repaints-and-brother-vinni-nuclear.html (http://makeandpaint.blogspot.com.au/2015/05/wotc-repaints-and-brother-vinni-nuclear.html)
Next up will be a few droids, and some banthas :D
Cheers

Nice one, mate.

Now please stop, as I asked you very nicely before.
>:D
-
Thanks Paul! :D
Now please stop, as I asked you very nicely before.
>:D
Well since you asked so nicely, I shall not post anything for over 3 weeks*. How does that sound? Will that give you enough time to gear up for your SW project? ;) Im sure Michka, Chico, Turbo-Ben, Swinegrab and Bibbles will provide plenty of motivation during that time >:D
You shall be avoiding the future board all together I assume to "stay on target" with your current projects. ;)
Cheers

*I'm off to Japan for a holiday!

Nice work on the repaints

They look grand :D

Yeah, you won't be doing this when you get back lol
Samurai all the way mate ;)
cheers
James

Very nice, although I do like Samurai, hope they don't push this project away from progress.
And a couple of Samurai in a Star Wars setting would do no harm. Light katana....

Thanks guys!

great work and repaints!!!
:)

Thanks huesped! The basic paint jobs they come with are a good starting point and save 'blocking' in colours.
You will give in, you will >:D
Oh I am tempted to make a samurai house, but not a samurai.. yet. Anyway, I finished this.
Landon has a look around the walled off tower, and encounters some jawas wondering if scavenging parts is worth the radiation risk.
Designed to be a cooling tower of some vault/lab, this terrain piece has a definite Star Wars vibe, but will also work in Post Apoc fallout settings.
Next up on the bench;
3 Tuskens on Banthas.
The WotC figure is pretty cheap for its size, and has a surprising amount of detail on the hard plastic bantha. The tusken rider however is a different story and is sadly a little soft on detail.
Thanks for looking!
Matt
-
I like that muchly :D

James
-
LOoking good, mate.
Love the panelling and posters.
:-* :-*

I agree, mate.
I was going to remove most of the Tusken off of mine and add something else.
An easy enough conversion that should improve the model.
;)
-
Great job on the dice tower Constable Bertrand, you have a lot of good ideas.
-
Oh ta, glad others think it works as a dice tower (just not large dice, doh) and as a terrain piece.
I agree, mate.

Nice one. Sadly I want tuskens on my banthas. :/
So, instead of buying WEG, or the least terrible WotC minis for tusken torsos.. I've taken a leaf out of Silent Steve's book and added tissue paper cloaks. It has really helped to make the figures look different too. I'll just add a little GS to add strength, then post a WIP piccy shortly.
Cheers
Matt
-
Pending Bantha WIP piccy... >_>
So...
I got distracted and made this.
Can't have you guys rushing ahead with sand ports without me now. >:D
On a trip to the recycling bin I spied some small boxes. Hmm.. they look a good size for a house, a quick trip to hot dollar to nab some Styrofoam balls, and a empty pack of Tim Tams for "buttresses" I had blocked out two little buildings.
I covered everything with a coat of gloop (paint, pva and sand) and worked up some layers of paint. Sadly it was a bit gritty, and a little rough for my liking. So... I smeared it with some spakfilla. :D
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-M1Ir3hl5tTc/VX6e-wS1xbI/AAAAAAAABfE/fe8qi8i2tB0/s640/IMAG0941.jpg)
Thats better.
Now to paint, highlights/details/weathering, fill the coke bottle planter box (in a propper scale), and tart up the machinery parts.
Cheers
Matt
-
Great job on the dice tower Constable Bertrand, you have a lot of good ideas.
Makes you wonder why more terrain dudes don't add such to their work; helps protect the rest of the project from errant projectiles.
Your distractions make me weep...

Ummm... Tim Tams

This is a very nice project - more please! 8) 8) 8)

James
-
nope, Tim Tams. And when you go Tim Tams, you may as well go double coat.
:D
Thanks guys. The filler helped I think, see how it paints up next.
The Beast-
We used the dice tower for the first time in anger on Saturday, it worked an absolute treat! And no dice destroyed our terrain! :) we had two strategically placed on the board and made it easy to go to the nearest tower.
Yes distractions, sorry. :( the poor little tuskens awaiting fancy cloaks... When will they get finished?
Cheers
Matt.
-

Not yet. :D
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-RO0cwgKsGr8/VYkdx4tFCAI/AAAAAAAABf4/LNZFIm5Pq_g/s1600/IMAG0946.jpg)
Cloaks attached, and GS fur added, the banthas are finished though :D
(http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2uEakGSESdM/VYkdujAF2vI/AAAAAAAABfg/8H_CQJ2y0JQ/s1600/IMAG0943.jpg)
The wall filler worked a treat on top of the sand, its left a fantastic surface texture, which has painted up nicely. I need to reden up the ground a little more and weather the mechanical bits, then add litter.
Cheers
Matt

Looking good, mate.
Really promising.

Plenty of inspiration for whenever I finally get around to going to the same place.... ::)

You've done the planter in 15mm then :)
Joking apart it's looking very good.

Those Bantha's look great. Wish I had found some back in the day. I'm afraid to find out how much they go for now. The buildings are all wonderful.
-
Looking great. So many ideas for this from old cardboard pulp packaging. Had to throw loads away in my recent house move and wanted to cry as I was doing so :D

A box and a Styrofoam ball! ;)
Surprisingly I picked up these 3 a few months ago for roughly $5 each. 0_o
trollandtoad.com has alot of used/New WotC SW and Herocliks/trading cards. :)
Sadly there is none right now, but they may shortly.

I must admit I carefully studied my coffee tray on the weekend before throwing it out. I haven't been convinced by that packaging in the past but I think you're right, I may need to go dumpster diving near the local warehouses! :D that's the problem with moving house, there is no time to start a new build and you don't have space to pack it :(
Cheers

YAY I finished things and have time to take a picture! :D
As I mentioned perviously the hard plastic Banthas were fantastic and held quite a lot of detail. Their bendy plastic riders were less... defined shall we say. They need to hit the gym. Without removing, or chopping off torsos I tried to hide their identical nature by adding cloaks, robes and fur. It was somewhat effective. Ordering extra tuskens with the plan of chopping and GSing would have been wiser in hindsight. One got the additional barrel length of a WGF rifle, turning it into a sniper rifle, for extra Pew Pew.

What started as a junk box, a biscuit pack, coke bottletops, capacitors, coat hanger, sand, and spakfiller has turned, IMHO, into a charming Mos Eisely building.

I finished basing the figures I had painted too (again the very very cheap WotC Bendy buggers), they couldn't help having a look around town.

Brilliant - except that I can't decide whether the Banthas or the buildings are my favourite. Very nice work on the old admiral too.
The Kessel Run poster is great 8) 8) 8)

Absolutely awesome mate.
Will you be getting some of the fantasy flight banthas when they release them for the next imperial assault expansion?
Really impressed with the painting and terrains. The dice tower is such an awesome idea for a terrain piece!
p.s. I prefer the caramel tim tams

Great stuff mate 8) 8) 8)

Nah I'm happy with the small force of Tuskens I have so far, no need for extras. ... yet. Though Stormies are a different matter ;) Thanks Beefcake. This site is very inspirational, id learned about dice towers on here, before having a game filled with terrain where I learned I needed one. lol
The new dark chocolate coffee ones in woolworths are great ;)
Thanks Mamma and Bibbles. :D Your encouragement to add bits is appreciated. That is often the "im over this now" part of the build. lol The game design issue I find is leaving room for miniatures to be placed on/around the 300mm x 210mm terrain tiles after the big stuff is squeezed in (fits in a PAPPIS BOX). Detritus makes it hard to place minis. :/
Cheers

Not too much to report over here, ive been fiddling about with two space craft.
Here is a piccy of one. A Action Fleet Naboo Starfighter I picked up at the time the movie was out.

Yes some of the action fleet stuff scales up great.

With a burst of terrain energy I'm throwing my hand into the Sandport colony race.
They are 3mm foamcore structures (with a little card for minor details such as stairs), coated in PVA and sand, sealed with watered down PVA before being smeared in wall filler. As with my post apoc shanty town I have capped my doors at 40mm high x 20mm wide and a single floor is 45mm high. I find this is high enough to block line of sight and means they take up less room when stacked vertically in a box.
They await another sealing with PVA and then undercoating.
I have applied a few resin features from antenocitis workshop, including screens and power couplings.

Ahh the Constable is lost in a galaxy far far away^^ I´ve already missed you in the Post Apocalypse! Nice Buildings you´ve done here sir. The first two Buildings looks a bit flat/naked on the wide roofs for me. Are you planning some technical stuff there like Aircondition, Watercollectors, Antennas etc. or do you want it a bit more empty there?

Good point Delta. Like my shanties I wanted to try and stack 3 in a box, so flat roofs work better to that purpose.
But you are correct that does make them boring. :? I haven't decided upon a magnetised solution yet.
The vaulted "Local" and the first "Market" with the arch have obstructions so will be on "top" when in their box.
So my plans for the market once I've painted it will be to add some wood/canvas sails protruding from the wall to shade the market below.
And the "Scrapyard" will have that empty space next to the building filled with odds and sods.
They have a few mechanical gubbins on the walls (the side I didn't photograph ::) ) but hopefully not too much to make them a bit more generic genre wise.
Hopefully that will be interesting enough..
Otherwise I shall need to add an extra adobe dodad ontop. Keep your eye out Delta on the next pictures and don't let me slack off! :D

You certainly may "recognise" some of the stuff in there James. lol lol Hope you don't mind if I tag your work, it's brilliant and needs a large audience.
There is some very interesting work out there in the modelling community, and I've found the photos of the old Tunisia sets have been a great resource for the colour and textures.
Pinterest is a vortex isn't it james. lol Pinterest is the path to "is that the time?". Mos Eisley leads to mos espa, mos espa leads to tunisia, tunisia leads to middle eastern architecture, middle eastern architecture leads to castles, castles leads to ... what was I looking for again?.. cats.. "Whoa is that the time?"
Quick lads, to foam and PVA! He's distracted by shiney pictures. Build your sandports!

Is that all? lol It really is amazing what people do and put up online, there is some fantastic resources and all for free.
I haven't taken out a magazine subscription to anything hobby related for ages, because none really capture all my interests and there are so many useful pictures, tutorials, blogs and videos available. It's fantastic.
I shall need to check out starship modeller again.
I'm the same as you Long Smile, for the last 3 years I've been dragging images to my desktop to sort into research folders, I've only switched to pinterest in the last 6 months and have in an effort to work from "the cloud". If only I could easily pin from chrome on my smart phone >:(

So, I finished these, sort of. I got to the point where they are close to being finished, needing more scatter, more area light effects, more grime, then I ran out of puff. So they are finished! I finally managed to take piccies too.

In vernacular architecture talk that is called a "twin billy." Lots of 19th century Dutch houses have those hidden behind the large front gable, although not usually rounded of course....

Thanks Zemjw, I was aiming for that Tatooine feel without being too exclusively SW.
Cool stuff. The buildings are perfect!
Thanks Old Ben! The biggest hive of scum and villainy this side of the dinner table.
In vernacular architecture talk that is called a "twin billy." Lots of 19th century Dutch houses have those hidden behind the large front gable, although not usually rounded of course....
Thanks Paul and Vodkafan, the things you learn on this place. A "Twin Billy" Canteena there must be some clever name for that... What do you have Paul?
Cheers
Matt

As the Sands roll through town, and the tumble weeds accumulate along the barn on the edge of town, so too do the years on this thread. ;D
Work and kiddies sure make things more difficult, but I haven't completely stopped.
Back many moons ago on my visit to the UK i picked up a box of GW Cultists in Bath while on a bus tour with Mrs B and 2yo B. Funny story I was that quick at visiting the store and making the purchase Mrs B decided to go to Maccas and we spent the rest of the bus trip running around town trying to find each other before the bus departed. The upside was that I got to view the roman church for free, albeit VERY quickly.
I adored the spaced robed cultists by Games Workshop when they came out. I thought they needed to be the classic orange and white space suit style and mixed in a few NorthStar Frostgrave Cultists and some Pig Iron heads to make up a few more lads than the box technically allows. A Metal Magic Spacelords Yoyodyne Shigaru joins them, I had rescued him from a display shelf in an antique store. I think they turned out great. Ready to roam the wastes with the other scavies.

Loving the double barrelled roof!

That one really stood oout for me too.
Great looking town, and I love that dice tower.

Nice work Matt, love the buildings (esp. the double barrel) and the colour scheme suits the figures really well.

Your town looks like a real "hive of villainy."

I was going to post about the roof too. I love that :-*

Thanks James, it's nice picking up the brushes again.
Your town looks like a real "hive of villainy."
It sure is a hive of scum, and plenty of the populace shoot first and ask questions later ;)
Thanks Malamute, Akula, and Hubba. Appreciate the nice words about the double barrelled. :) There was so much work with the stucco, spackfiller, grit, spackfiller, I tried so many different products to get the right rough smooth texture. Then there was so much paint to bring out the 'layers' of the construction and weathering. I'm chuffed with them too :)
Next on the list, Finishing off some small spaceships, hasslefree jedi, and SW Bendy aliens

Two ships have also landed recently in the spaceport, a GW Tau dropship with customised hammerhead front end and a repainted Star Wars Ep1 toy Naboo Starfighter. The Captain and her 2IC check out the new arrivals to see which one would be a good addition to the team, everyone likes shopping day.

Aetherworks MDF Moisture Collectors were great to build and a great price point for what you get. Certainly needed for any sandy planet. I'm not sure if they are still available anymore, they used to do their own lazer terrain but seem to have stopped.
Oops seems like some goons are tampering with them.

Splendid :)

great work - particularly love the repaint on the Naboo N1 :)
-
Oh wow, I have a hammerhead that I want to make less 'Tau' looking. Yours looks great and is giving me ideas.
-
I like those C.B. good job.
Can we get a close up of the captain in her shiney epaulets? I can see that she's a Reaper fig but surely as a captain she deserves her own glamour shot?
-
Great stuff, love the Naboo fighter. :)

Thanks for all the kind words guys!!

A space captain has been spotted in the Cantina and Junk Yard, looks like shes trying to put together a band, who knows if her trade is legal or under the table. There have been some other characters spotted in town some are rather good at trying to hide, the large white robot heavy armour chaps a little less so. And there seems to be a middle aged lady walking around with a large air of entitlement, some even refer to her as your Majesty, is she related to the Emporer? Whats bringing all these people to the outer rim recently, is it the lure of coin, plenty of work or the repulsive tyranny of the inner core? Will we ever know?

Lovely stuff & ideas. Please keep it up.

Yeah a pocket watch or compas isn't quite satisfactory for WYSIWYG rules lol

Nice! Love those old Spacelords Cybertech Bunkerbreaker miniatures.

Great stuff. Lovely additions. :)

Good to see you back at it Matt! Looking good.
As a teen there was a shop not far from me that sold the entire Metal Magic miniature ranges. We used some Spacelords stuff to play an ALIENS game in the day.
