Title: The "I haven't got time to do a Mad Max project" thread. UPDATE 19th Oct.
Post by: 6milPhil on May 16, 2015, 05:57:41 PM
I just happened to find a pile of mainly hot wheels cars in Poundland

...and then lined them all up...

Any suggestions for 20mm mini's? Esp. looking for motorbikes, and vehicle crew. Pref. from folk who bought some, and liked them. 8)

This was the only non-diecast I bought, because I liked the windows

and after about an hour it looked like this, although I have gone and put the missing rivet on...

The Hotwheels are diecast so I can see they'll be more long-winded as you have to drill out the rivets to get inside. This makes a good Nux proxy.

I'm making some wheels, seen below, suitable for both 20/28mm. They have a blank side for ease of casting, but typically that won't be seen.If anyone is interested in a set PM me please.

First sets of wheels cast.  :) These are flat on one side, but that's typically hidden.

The medium wheels, with the biggest being dia:25mm width 11mm and the smallest dia:17mm width 6mm.

The BIG wheels dia:36mm width 17mm, these roughly the same amount of resin in a pair of these as there is in the whole set above.

If anyone would like some PM me, they're £4 a set - P&P at cost, etc.

It's various plasticard, and occassionally a bit of metal or scraps off a previous car. Once you've done a few you have a pile of interesting bits.  8)

My best advice in doing these builds is to save the offcuts.  If you cant use them in other cars, they make great 'stuff' for scattering on junk terrain and other PA applications.

Thanks guys!  8)

Can I ask what rules you plan to use for the gaming?

Sure, I'm thinking of using the movement from Car Wars, and cobbling something together for the combat as I'm having very few vehicle mounted weapons. I'll be digging out my old Car Wars rules and having a look at the petrol rules, and other car games for a clue.

As Scurv said on his Mad Max thread, Car Wars are good solid, and much adored, rules - but with a great number of cars it can get too much.

I'm also considering an element of bingo, namely for each turn a player gets a random chit, "Oh", "what", "a", "lovely", and "day" which once a full set is played an heroic move can be done, something like succeed in a roll without having to roll, etc...

Thanks guys.

I've decided to go for the Interceptor: Fury Road, the one you see for about a minute in the beginning. No one seems to have done one yet, although I am tempted to do all three versions.  ::)

I've started by popping the rivets and taking out the back.

Taken off the front bumper carefully so I've still got the post hole, poor photo I know...

Then marked where to cut off some front detail.

And hacked it off.

Then as if by magic a pile of Ramshackle bikers turn up, they're just perfect!

Curtis chucked in some spares for playing with, so out with the hacksaw.

Works well I think....

I will be doing some drivers over the next few weeks. Can I please get some advice on how you want them to fit into the cars? I can do them holding a steering wheels so its easy to fit them, but is there any kind of "average size and shape" for the driver position?

I will be doing some gun turrets and mounts with with gunners too. Any suggestions  or comment would be welcome!

I can send you some car interiors so you get an idea of the average, but I will need them back. Holding a steering wheel would be great, the one I'm hacking was holding similar so I've cut the steering wheel off the stalk in the die cast and it lines up easily with the wheel in the mini's hands and looks BRILL.

For the gunners I'd suggest just how the gunners on the bikes are but with straighter legs. I'd prefer gunners without weapons, but with would be good too. I imagine folk would like quite a few baldies to mimic warboys.

I'm not sure I'll be using turrets, but I imagine plenty of folk would. In your usual style would be fine.

same as phil said TBH some that look like warboys would be very nice if possible. im not to much of a fan of a turret also but would prob still buy one or two just incase. gun mounts be sweet also (machine guns and harpoons!)

The Interceptor progresses, although the photography regresses...

This is so that working, painting and putting it all back together is easier, it's been quite a thing to work out so thought it best shared in case anyone else would like to do it.

I've put a bit of paint on the interior and then chopped off the front bumper thus:

Then glued it into the metal body.

Cut a piece to build up the front.

It has the chunk cut out of it so the interior can still be put in, and use the post, etc.

On with the spoiler.

Bash on the miliput to the front, indenting the two holes.

Phil the Interceptor is looking great! Bravo mate ;D Now a quick question- how you get the rivets out of the bottom of the car?

Ramshackle- great news on drivers and gunners. Was literally about to order your bikes when I read your post. Will hold off now until the drivers/gunners are out if they're relatively imminent?

A mix of gunners with and without weapons would be great- love some separate weapons too if possible; industrial looking flamers and harpoon guns on pedestal type mounts would be lovely. Also any chance of a few dismounted punks running around with crossbows, hand-to-hand weapons and the odd sawn off shotgun?

Ta.

I looked up a video on youtube. Be wary the Hotwheels world is an odd one, says the gamer, there's a ball of odd to it.

Basically you drill them out, they're not really rivets, more a pin with a thin top which has been stamped to mushroom over and hold it together. After a couple it becomes really easy to get it right.  ;)

If I may Curtis?  I've been building these types of cars for a few years now and have seen quite a few solutions.  I think the best are the old GW Dark Future style.  From the knees up sculpt, holding a steering wheel.  It'd also be great to get some gunners for the passenger spot.  Maybe some who are firing large cal weapons and some that have hand weaps.

I've found some replacement tyres in my spares box.

Milliput (modelling putty) - once you put the grille onto the body, and the white plasticard in place you've got both a shelf and a back to push the putty onto. Shaped it with a scalpel, now sanding, liquid stuffing and sanding again.

I cut a piece of plasticard to size, wet it to reduce drag and pushed it into the milliput before it cured.  ;)

I decided to go this route for the MM1 and MM2 Interceptors.  If you scroll to the bottom you can see the original car and the conversions.

Thanks mate.  :)

Cutting out two small sections from the underneath piece to make allowance for the zommie pipes on the side pf the car. Without doing this putting it back together would be difficult.

New wheels, the Interceptor has seven spokes, I could only find fives, but much better wheels regardless, I've also filled them so they're flat on the inside.

The most fiddly bit yet was bashing together the part of the engine which sticks out the top of the bonnet.

It's a little too big, but I console myself with the shape of the spoiler... Vvroom!

Thanks.

I've found something more awkward to make than the bit of engine sticking out of the bonnet, the zoomie pipes...

I decided to use fuse wire for these and to say it fiddly is an understandment, there came a point when I wished the *@!+&$ things could #%£! themselves and &%£$ shove it up their !*%@* %^$£@#.
Joining the pipes together and fixing them to the car as a single piece was a non-runner, So I bent the wire to the right length, leaving plenty of spre to hold onto and then glued them into place one-by-one. Then clip off the spare once dry and glue the next one into place. You can't put too muach glue on the outside but you can have quite a bit on the inside.

Here you can see why you hack out a bit of the bottom.

A bit of paint, it makes good fetish sense to paint this one first of course but after all the faffing with the zommie pipes I'm going to lie down in a darkened room for a while...

The square is brassed etched stuff from a model shop and quite pricey, the diamond is aluminium car dent repair mesh and pretty cheap.

Well I thought it looked like a bit of a tricky hack so that's why I'm sharing it.

One thing I would suggest if you're making an interceptor which isn't the one from Fury Road is how the zoomie pipes are fluted, and you might want to use the axle wires from HW cars for those. Their ends are fluted to keep the wheels on.  ;)

Bear in mind there's more standard paint in the rust (i.e. three shades of VJ red leather) than the rust paint.

Thanks

I got carried away this weekend having visited B&M and found some fresh HWs for just 99p each. Amongst them where a couple of iconic Brit vehicles which I just had to hack immediately

The Robin Reliant  :o The flames didn't work very well. I'm tempted to go back to it and dirty it some more. The only things I've done to this is put a driver in and add a platform to the back.

London Taxi, I've just added the front blower, mesh and extra front bumpers. I like the idea of twin engines, making it fast although it still won't go south of the river...

A vehicle perfect for the Hit'ler and Runs...

I#m not sure it's safe enough for that, it has a steering problem... it can only turn Reich.

I can help you with the builds. (we did mad max car wars to death in the 90's)

Much appreciated, I will bear all that in mind, although I've still yet to find my Dueltrack book... found the box though.  ::)

You had anything turn up in the post?

I built another bullet farmer car... my mate Wobbly loved this car in the film, went loopy when he saw th one I'd built so I've done this as a pressie for him and tried to make it look like his Volvo.

Thanks fellas.

Those engines have taken so long I'm miffed at them not actually working, there'll be a set of five eventually and five blowers so plenty of room for variety. I reckon they'll also work for both 20mm and 28mm - the smallest one there is approx 20mm x 15mm.

Brilliant Phil! Miles above my ham fisted attempts at using bits of sanded sprue.

You could to a chevey big block air filter too. Not quite as extreme as superchargers, but perhaps useful for the more discerning wastelander concerned about fuel use lol an easy (for your skills) mod to provide extra choice.

Cheers

The engines are a trifle tricky, need a double degas. Right pain doing them in this weather too, when it's hot rubber becomes like marshmallow, resin starts to cure in the cup - I may have to wait until evening to do any more.

If anyone's interested in some of these they're £6 a set, plus P&P - pm me if you want some.

I'm not too sure about the spelling though.  :?

I've been plating around with a new way to attach wheels, I've cut a cotton bud tube and glued it on as an axle...

then drilled a hole in the wheel and taken a blurry photo of it...

cut the sharp end off a pin and glued the head into the hole...

then glued the pin inside the cotton bud axled, the longer the pin the better, the gap allows you to get a fair amount of super glue involved.

Similar to my approach. I used styrene rod or sprue and then drilled a smaller hole. But a long pin seems an easier thing for your way.

I bought a box of these:

After a fair amount of hacking and liquid greenstuff they look like this:

and a little more work I've ended up with these:

I'm waiting for 20mm magnets to turn up before I can paint them...  :?

A couple more Warboys WIP

Some of the plastic figs aren't hackable as Warboys, but are as Vulvalini...

Although the later take too long so four will definately be enough.

Standing out in the rain usually does it.  ;)

I use mixes of brown, one reddish and one flat. I have then both on the go at the same time, one lightened and one darkened, them I dab it on then darken the lighter one and brighten the darker one, dab those on and repeat. Then I finish off with a little of Modelmates rust, but I'm using less and less of that as my pot runs out and it's pricey stuff.. On 28mm I also use pastels as a final stage, they good as you can get flakes off them, but it's sensitive stuff you have to get the varnish on pretty quick.

I got this technique sorted after doing this:

Here's more of that: https://6milphil.wordpress.com/2012/10/16/rust-in-peace/ (https://6milphil.wordpress.com/2012/10/16/rust-in-peace/)

Quite.

One thing I do recommend with that rust is to use it really sparingly, I think it give a much better effect that way, and possibly come back and add more later.

Akula used it on his POTA game at Salute a few years back...

I used to paint rust by hand. It can look super nice but my god its time consuming. It so nice to just produce it by magic instead.

Also brings up a fairly valid point with this hobby of ours and life in general. That is having the right tool for the job combined with the know how on using it makes the job go so much smoother and better.

Scurv, I did the rust on this truck very quickly and think it looks great for the amount (read as 'lack of real') effort put into it:

I used a chunk of sponge ripped from a figure pack and dapped on a black/dark gray, then dabbed on browns, adding a bit of red/orange/yellow to lighten it up a bit for the next layer.  Paint was cheap craft paint.  I didn't mix it very thoroughly when lightening it so there was color/shade variation in the pool I was dipping the sponge into.   Rusting that took all of maybe 10 minutes.

Now, it does not look nearly as nice as Phil's work, but if a no talent hack like myself can do it, you could too.

I'm still painting my plastic conversions, it's taken longer than I expected, so to console my weary brow I've done a little bit of shopping.

I've been looking all over for suitable 20mm mini's, and if anyone has any suggestions I'd be delighted to hear them, and Elheim http://www.elhiemfigures.com/ (http://www.elhiemfigures.com/) have the best selection so I bought a few.

These are the Survivors #3

Amazons #1
(http://i.imgur.com/hDejsyw.jpg)

Pulp Hero weapon variant
(http://i.imgur.com/mHoewTX.jpg)

I was going to hack the last one into a Max but he's a trifle undersized, he'll become crew I think. The one on the right was a freebie, v. generous, of one of their zombies - handy for a corpse.

They fit well with the plastics too.

Thanks fellas.

The hacks are a right pain, there's a lot of trimming to them, then I doped the thinner parts like arms with liquid superglue and two coats of varnish and then primed them. The Vuvalini had to have addition clothing, goggles, etc, added. The lances are two pieces of plastic tube, plus ribbons cut out of cardboard which were then doped to give them rigidity. The spanner was also cut from cardboard and doped.

If you do have a go, have plasters nearby. ::)

e2a: IDed them, they're Future Wars Gangers... long OOP.

I am very much inclined to put my hand up to fund a range of hotwheels sized gang types.

If you do consider tracking down the sculptor of the "Amazons", they're the best 20mm I'd found so far. They're originally from Force 20 http://tabletopscale.com/miniatures/fine-scale-miniatures/ (http://tabletopscale.com/miniatures/fine-scale-miniatures/) 8)

Thought I'd give you a quick gander at the school bus WIP not least to share a handy source for rivets which are quite cheap...

There's these circular flat ones...

square ones (green) with holes which look like nuts, circular with holes (purple) which look like washers and circular domed (white) which look like rivets or domed nut heads.

They're all Nail Decorations, widely available and very cheap, I found good and reduced prices in Hobbycraft and packets in poundstores.  On these 20mm models they're a touch large but for 28mm I reckon they're perfect and definately easier than most other techniques.  8)

The bus is close to being finished... a bit of tricky one at points but great fun. There's a few pieces to add to this once I've rebuilt it, I'm going to have side guns at the open windows, but not sure I'll need gunners as I don't think you'll see them and it makes reassembly quite tricky.

I wanted to keep the small amount of writing which wasn't covered by armour, so it needed colour matching - Lufthansa Gelb did the trick but only after three coats and the weathering covered up the joins.

Almost got my war rig finished, the trailer looked very monotonous with metalled sides, unlike the bus there's no windows or contrasting roof to set it off, so I painted a couple of panels as old signs. Once dry I realised that wasn't enough so did them all, and with Aussie brands in tribute to the wonderful George Miller.

Between RR and Quantas is Blundstone but it's a small section as it would be a nightmare to freehand, and I did it on the side of the model rather than on a flat to glue on... it's Thiess rather than dunhill, their older style logo inside a graphic Aus, the last one is ANZ.

These might be Bogan brands to you, to us it's the treasures of a land of paradise.  ;)

Uh... been a while but I picked up the drill bit sizes recommended in that video a while back so a 1.5mm followed by 3.5mm I think. Sometimes it works fine but a lot of the rivets kinda get spread out and stop the bottom coming off easily, it's a real effort to try pick at the edges enough to pull it apart.

Sweet! I like the poor soul tied on high.  8)

Does remind me to ask: How are the crew going?

Yes! Curious minds want to know.  :D

Got my version of  The Peacemaker finished, the original paint was too neat to lose.

Thanks fellas!

I've been lucky enough to get hold of some Dark Future Crew from a generous LAFer, so I'm currently hacking up the left over Indian Warriors and sticking them together with casts of the DF pieces*.

They look rather unexciting in this poor photo...

But produce some dynamic possibilties, and they're easier to do than the warboys!

*Totally legal as I'm not selling them.

Thanks geezers.

Some 20mm survivors from Elheim, I really liked these, especially the one which cried out vicar-in-desert-camo-with-sniper-rifle to me. There were a pair of female figures in this set which I'm not too sure about, so they're on the bench undercoated.

Another car finished, this is one of my faves as, for me, it really captures the feel of MM3 - where the cars where the best part for the very short time they featured. DF crew, the standing one has legs from a plastic Indian warrior.

Got to admire his wisdom, and carrying on the fine tradition of profanity as punctuation...  :)

I'm happy to hear that but also partially disappointed, my stereotype of our glorious aussie cousins includes extreme profanity.  ::)

I've hacked a Fiat 500, my personally most loathed car, into something more meaty, aside from the diecast fiat body and interior this is a scratch build...

Nice, love the winch on front being connected to the harpoon.

I really need to push the boat out a bit on my own cars.

I am taking inspiration from your work wholesale now. When I had to calibrate my 3d printer I used some 20mm ish wheels as tests, and I went to visit my FLMS for rustall and Revel NATO pilots who look like they will make great drivers. (gas masks only add to the look eh?  lol)

Thanks fellas!  :)

Nice, love the winch on front being connected to the harpoon.

For that one I used wire, then a little chain for the join to the harpoon. It was fiddly because the gunner mini had the harpoon, which I beefed up, attached to him. the one on the back was easier as I used thread which I then doped with liquid superglue.
