Title: Waterloo Diorama Celle (Special 28mm Miniature!)

On the last long weekend we have (that are Heiko, Koppi, Vasa, John, Klaus, Dirk and I) built up a diorama in Celle under the direction of Jens. The theme of the diorama is naturally Waterloo … on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the battle of 18 June 1815. A few years ago some members of this team designed different Waterloo diorama in Hamburg, Braunschweig and also, as in this year, in the beautiful half-timbered town of Celle. The Bomann Museum in Celle, where our diorama was created, has a strong connection to Hanover military history and so it is no surprise that the layout and the design has its focus on the Hanoverian troops and the KGL.

Thursday morning, all starts with the discharge of the cars …

The material and the miniatures are sorted and stored …

The substructure and the layout of the terrain are discussed …

Yet we are all skeptical about whether the concept of the museum, which has two separate dioramas, will also be visually appealing, each with a model of the farm La Haye Sainte …

In an small room nearby, we discovered the little diorama, which we had already built in early February for the museum. It shows the combined square of Hanoverian battalions Bremen and Verden, approximately 1,000 soldiers during the battle. The exhibit served in recent weeks as a teaser for our big diorama …

Incredibly 95% of all troops were painted by one person of our team … and incredible Dirk also painted still during the construction …

Finally it comes to the landscaping and placement of the miniatures. In contrast to our earlier dioramas, the figures were not completely interspersed with model grass, but inserted in prefabricated terrain features …

Some LEDs were installed, which will visually show events on the battlefield …

It is going well. The attack of the French infantry...

And the British and Hannover squares on the western side of the battlefield take shape…

A great view from a ladder. From this perspective you can see the two separate dioramas. The separation in the center is intended to indicate the two temporally different battlefield events. The farm La Haye Saint on the outer edge is an orientation for the visitor…

Here are the first pictures of the finished diorama. The whole thing is in 28mm scale , has a length of 12 meters (6 each part), a depth of 5 meters and is equipped with more than 15,000 miniatures …

28mm too :o
Sorry, only just noticed that.

I had assumed at first that these were the 20mm miniatures you were using for your Waterloo table at Die Tactica, Frank.

Were the figures all borrowed from existing collections?
(Surely you guys didn't paint 15,000 28mm miniatures just for this diorama?  :o  :o  :o)

What? !

28mm?

I thought they were the usual 1:72 plastic.

Now 'retarded' doesn't even begin to cover it!  lol

What are the plans for this in the future then? Storage? Division and games?

Which manufacturer/s

Most of the figures look like they are Perry miniatures - the French cuirassiers certainly are.

With 15,000 minis on the boards, it must have been quite an interesting order...  o_o

Gentlemen....

Title: Re: Waterloo Diorama Celle
Post by: Frank on May 24, 2015, 10:11:58 AM
Thanks for the nice comments. In most the miniatures are in fact Perry miniatures. As already mentioned, almost all the miniatures had been painted by Dirk Tietten (I have only painted some 100 figures). The collection of Dirk counted about 7,000 figures several years ago and has been extended in recent years for this exhibition. Of course, most of the figures of the diorama are Perry-plastics (approximately 75%). But yes, we ordered a lot of them ;-)

Next weekend there will be the grand opening ceremony. Then also the exhibits of the museum are to be seen (uniforms, weapons and paintings). More pictures will follow...  8)

This weekend finally the long-awaited opening ceremony of the Waterloo exhibition in Celle took place. In addition to our diorama there is a large exhibition on the theme Hanoverian army and KGL at Waterloo. Here are the first photos of the exhibition:

@Harry Faversham: Yes, some of the squares are a little bit too large (but some of them are squares of two battalions). There are also a lot of other “not peferct” things, but sometimes you have to make compromises.  ;)

WOW! Thank you very much for all your comments.

There is one more news about this topic. It is the 28mm miniatures of Carl von Alten specially made for the exhibition by Jens Najewitz (sculpted by Frank Germershaus). Actually it is a group of 4 miniatures…Carl von Alten, his servant, his horse and dog. The special thing is the group of miniatures is modeled on the painting in the exhibition:

You can buy the miniatures here: http://www.lasermodellbau.de/index.php/de/component/jshopping/product/view/57/769

I was able to drive through Celle the Sunday before last, and I have to say, as wonderful as the photos are, they pale in comparison to the display.  It's huge! Almost everyone at the exhibit was staring at it in stunned silence.  It's beautifully arranged and covered with wonderful and very lifelike vignettes that add a "human aspect" to the innumerable ranks of soldiers.

In an anteroom there's also a beautiful diorama of the Hanoverian Army's celebrations on the erection of the Waterloo "victory column", made with "flats" from a long-extinct company.  And the rest of the exhibit is very interesting as well - lots of worthwhile information about the KGL and other German troops at the battle.
