Title: Vehicle weathering started
Post by: Gunner Dunbar on June 01, 2015, 05:51:14 AM
Hi guys, have finished these Selous Scouts from Eureka Miniatures on commission, this is the first time I have painted anything from the Rhodesian wars, and it was a lot of fun, I now have a new interest in that conflict, the figures themselves are brilliant, I couldn't recommend them more, all comments welcome.

Beautifully painted.

I think you'll find figures were designed to represent the Rhodesian Light Infantry rather than Selous Scouts. The Selous Scouts were racially mixed with most of the ORs being African, mostly 'turned' guerillas. So if you have been commissioned to portray that unit you might want to rethink figure selection and skin tones. The white members of the unit tended to darken their skin when on operations and were as often as not heavily bearded.

Indeed. These miniatures look very good. And yes from what i have read (Paul Els, We fear naught but God, The story of the South African Special Forces) it was quite a diverse bunch, racially and otherwise. ;-)

Hi Guys, some more 28mm modern Aussies finished on commissions, these are Skirmish Sangin figures, pretty nice figures, the metal is a little soft and the Styers barrels are easily bent, I like these a little more than the Empress miniatures Aussies, but they are both nice.

Hi guys

Finished some Spectre miniatures spec ops figures on commission, customer wanted a motley mixed camo with some solid colours look, the Spectre minis are nice poses with a realistic look, but they have the most fragile barrels I have seen in 28mm, actually, any scale, I can't remember the last time I broke a barrel painting figures, (none in the last year anyway), however 2 broke during this commission,  and I fear several more will break during game handling, for this reason alone I cannot recommend them.

Hi,
Could you PM me which figures broke during painting? We use an extremely durable metal which is far tougher and fatigue resistant than any other manufacturer, to allow us to make far more accurate models. It may have been a defect with the models as we have never had a figure break during painting or gaming before.

Happy to say that Spectre Miniatures have excellent customer service, and are replacing the broken figures, there may have been some casting issues with this batch of figures.

Spectre is a great outfit to deal with!  However, I do agree that some of the weapons have really he slim barrels!  None have broken so far, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I will be painting a couple of Indochina M24s next week for a customer, and whilst researching I realised I didn't post pics of his last commission, which is a shame as they turned out nice, so here they are, some French paras and NVA for the indochina war, the M24 is a resin warlord model, all comments welcome.

Finished these 28mm Rangers on commission, I believe these are Empress figs, very crisp detail, lovely figures, this is my first attempt at multicam, pretty happy with it, but I will get better after a few more times, might be a reason to start my long stashed zombie projects, 15mm and 28mm. Some 28mm US Marines finished on commission, these lovely figures are from Eureka Miniatures, great sculpts, good poses, and the anatomy is pretty spot on, first time I have painted Marine MARPAT camo, the trick with any camo, is does it look realistic from 2 foot away, and these turned out great, all comments welcome.

Not bad. Try stippling the paint on with Marpat, it gives a good effect at all distances.

Any chance of a tutorial or paint list. the colours look spot on

I do like those those Eureka minis, tempted to get some of the Aden Brits in bush hats to do as 1960's RLI.
Good job on the painting. Only 'rivet counter' observation: RAR would have had black boots, & if going for a post '76 look camo'd weapons

Hi guys

My first modern platoon sized skirmish project (might use modern chain of command), an Infantry platoon for my central African imagi-nation, The democratic republic of Botswalia, figures were converted from Italeri's 1/72 plastic Vietcong, Warsaw pact, and US special forces bodies with various US M1 helmet heads, added cargo pockets on their pants, various packs/pouches, scratch built some machetes, I have given all the leaders beret heads, which I will paint either red or green.
Not sure what camo I will use, thinking of using several cammos, maybe 70% Rhodesian or British  denison smock, and 30% another 2 different camos, any suggestions? maybe US woodland and soviet sun bunnies? maybe a tigers stripe pattern? i'de like something with a majority bright green, I want them to look a little irregular but professional.
Thinking I will be able to use them in scenarios from the 70s to today, vehicles will be a mix of British (former British colony, Britain continued to supply) and soviet (captured from wars with neighbours)
I"m also making a ultra modern US and Russian forces and a local communist style guerrilla enemy.

 Hi guys

Was recently talking to a friend about his 15mm AK47 project, which encourage me to dig my 1/72 1960-70 Central African project out of the stash, have done the basic paint job, and done an oil wash, when dry I will start on the highlights. Figures are converted from the Italeri 1/72 Vietcong and US special forces sets.

 Hi guys

I’ve finished the Democratic republic of Botswalian regular infantry platoon, (all converted plastics) I tried to get a central Africa jungle vibe with the basing, fairly happy with how they turned out, tried giving them a matte varnish with Vallejo, I’m a big fan of Vallejo, but their Matte varnish isn’t great, a little glossy still, I also 3D printed a few vehicles, not sure if they will be for Botswalia or for their enemies, we will see, given them a red brown base coat, they will be 3 tone, red brown, green and sand camo. The vehicles are Bergmann STL, free of thingyverse, they are great at 1/100, but the detail starts getting a bit chunky at 1/72, I could spend a couple of weeks trying to re detail them, but I wanted to see how they would print, I might do some work on the next batch before printing, sort of got exited with this batch, just wanted to start painting.

Title: Re: Botswalian infantry finished and vehicles base coated
Post by: Gunner Dunbar on October 18, 2023, 09:28:28 AM
 Hi guys

Have started the weathering on these 3 vehicles, state of the art vehicles provided by the USSR, for the democratic republic of Botswalia army (East Botswalia) for use against the French/US backed Constitutional republic of Botswalia forces (west Botswalia) to try and secure the contested unobtainium mines.
A bit of weathering to do, some oil streaking and pastels then finish of with some bases.

The freehand decal you've painted on each vehicle is especially impressive. I have browsed the whole thread though and think it is all excellent. The converted figures for Botswalia are superb though!  :)
