Yep, another Fallout project! I'd gathered some bits and pieces for this a while back and the new Fallout 4 trailer got me all fired up about it this week.
As you can guess from the title, I'll be setting this project in the post-apocalyptic ruins of Chicago when the time comes to build terrain. That said, I'll be doing a lot of figures that appear in DC and New Vegas as well.
So here's what I started out with:
(those two white boxes are bases and a Brother Vinni order)
Like many, I kicked this off with the Brotherhood of Steel:
To create a bit of variety, I repositioned the arms on the guy on the left into something closer to a rifle ready pose. These chaps are being painted now, so I'll get more pictures of them as they're closer to being done.
While various washes and stuff dry, I'm assembling the ghouls. Standard issue Mantic zombies for these:
I managed to snag a box of 40 of these guys at Adepticon this year (half price on account of my toddler son charming the guy at the stand), more than enough for this project.
I found this excellent basing tutorial on reddit, I'll be using a recoloured version of the desert base: (link) (http://imgur.com/gallery/JM8Y1/new)
Looking back up at the boxes, I'll be using the Wargames Factory Survivors as various wastelanders. The Bolt Action figures might be NCR, although I've come across a better alternative so maybe not - we'll see. I'm a bit of a perfectionist like that! Since that picture was taken I picked up some em4 troopers to use as Reiley's Rangers and Talon Company, and this week I spent my fortnightly wargaming budget on a bunch of weapons packs and some bottle caps.
-
Looking forward to seeing how this all turns out.
-
Woo! Another fallout thread. Perfect. 8)
Cracking start, with those boxes you should have more than enough! :)
Cheers
Matt.
-
Thanks folks! Yep, certainly more than enough to last me until I'm allowed to order more! :P
Got the Brotherhood mostly finished this morning, just the bases to do. Pictures will be coming later once my phone charges. In the meantime, 18 more Feral Ghouls are in the process of being assembled. Here's hoping the weather here clears up soon so I can get them undercoated!

(should be getting a new cord for my digital camera later this week, this phone isn't the best for photographing minis)
Managed to get the Ghouls undercoated, 16 as Ferals and 5 as Glowing Ones. That should keep me busy for the week! Also got started on converting a couple of Talon Company mercs.
-
Not bad,
-
Looks great so far! Will there be any not-feral or glowy ghouls?
-
Thanks folks! So it turns out I miss a bit, my brother helpfully pointed out their lack of insignia. I knew I'd missed a bit :P
Looks great so far! Will there be any not-feral or glowy ghouls?
Yup, there absolutely will be! The Mantic zombies set comes with enough spare heads to mix with the Wargames Factory sets to make some more civilized ghouls.
-
Looking good so far, eek!
By the way, I see you're a Chicago guy. How is it that my club has never crossed paths or played a game with you?

Thanks!
Probably for a few reasons. I came here 2 and a half years ago leaving my old wargaming stuff behind, and I only really got settled enough to jump back in at the start of this year. With full-time work, a wife and kid, it's taking a while to build up anything from the clean slate I started with! :P Where do you guys meet?

Them bases look nice already. Could we have a close up and some more info on how you achieved that texture?

Sure, I can get a close up if you like when I get back from work tonight, but it's really simple. A nice thick, lumpy coat of Games Workshop's Agrellan Earth is all it takes. The thicker you put it on the larger and deeper the cracked segments get, so it's easy to control the effect. You could leave it as-is, but I'll be painting mine so they look a little less flat.
-
Ah, didn't know they had that.
(I try to steer away from GW products...)
I do have Valejo crackle medium, but have never used it. Perhaps I should give it a go...

Aye, looks good. and reminds me that I need to get cracking on my mantic ghouls..

Ooh, nice but out of stock AND from the States :?
-
Not out of stock so much as in pre release mode if I am not mistaken
-
Thanks everyone! Things are progressing slowly but I'll get some WIP pics of my ghouls up soon!

I hadn't seen them before but looks like I may have to pick up some in the future, thanks!

Just a couple of quick snaps after last night's work. First, some progress on the Feral Ghouls:
Just the flesh and basecoat on the scraps of clothing done so far. Not my best work, but with 40 of these guys to get through I don't mind it being a little rougher than usual to get them done in a timely manner.
I also got started on some Talon Company mercs:
These are em4's Future Skirmish Troopers with weapon swaps, in this case from Bolt Action Soviet Infantry. These two have combat shotguns, and I'm waiting on some more weapons packs to kit out a few more of these guys. The one on the left needs a bit of tidying up on the hand (I'm not good at sculpting those), but other than that I'm satisfied with the conversion. I plan to start out with 5 of these guys, and 5 of Reiley's Rangers also based on the same figures.
-
Really fantastic work, Eek. I always love kit bashing, and you've accomplished that in style. How easy did you find the weapon swaps to accomplish on the troopers?

Thanks! :) These guys were really easy to work with, the metal isn't too hard. The guns aren't molded too deeply into the body of the figure like with some ranges, and they're pretty compact weapons, so it's easy to hack them away with only a few cuts from a set of clippers and there's very little cleanup to do afterwards.
-
Good stuff eek! The Talon Company Mercs are shaping up nicely.

Those weapons swaps look awesome, I have some of the copplestone castings troopers to use for TC as well. Are the Bolt Action weapons appreciably larger or bulkier than the Wargames Factory Survivor ones?

Funny you should mention that, I got working last night on two more mercs with AKs from the WGF Survivors. They look to be around the same kind of size, I'll probably be able to finish the conversions tonight and snap a picture for you.
-
This is a thread I am eagerly monitoring already ;). Can't wait for the next installment. :)

That's great to hear, they look awesome and I would love to replicate your results in my own humble way. ;)
-
As promised, an update on the Talon Company:
The one on the left has a Bolt Action Soviet weapon, the two on the right have the WGF Survivor weapons. I think they maybe look slightly too delicate compared to the figures themselves, but I don't think it's too much to look completely out of place.
-
They look absolutely fine, Eek. Fantastic work, mate :)
-
They look great, the original weapons were "heroic scale" anyway. lol
Also, I've just noticed that Mark's original Grenadier/em4 troopers have the shoulder pads but his Copplestone Castings' troopers don't. Looks like I'll be cracking out the greenstuff then... ::)
-
Thanks folks!
Haven't had much time on the project this weekend, but the time I did get was spent on the first two of Reilley's Rangers:
(Yay, new camera cord! No more terrible phone pictures!)
They're holding HK MP5Ks from The Assault Group, with a little trimming - the closest I could find to the Fallout 3 10mm SMG. Have I mentioned how much I hate sculpting hands? Because I really hate sculpting hands.
Lurking behind them is a fifth member of Talon Company who will be getting a missile launcher.
-
Love the sprue segment as rocket tube, nifty bit of work there. :)
-
Thanks! :)
Bit of a slow week, but some progress has been made. The Brotherhood are varnished and drying, so hopefully tomorrow I have time to get them photographed. Right behind them are the ghouls, who have had some additions. Just gotta finish the bases and they'll be varnished. Here's how they look now:
As that's happening, I'll be finishing up the Talon Company and Reilley's Rangers conversions and painting them too. And as soon as my next shipment of bases arrives, I'll be letting loose on the Wargames Factory Survivors, which I'm very excited about!
-
Got the last few finishing touches done on the Brotherhood:
Really happy with how these guys turned out. Also, these mark the first figures I've finished painting for myself in two years :o
-
Great job on the BoS! Really nice and clever bases, wish I had thought of something like that before I did mine.
-
Hey folks! Been away from this project for a little while due to starting up Necromunda then going on a 2 week vacation to visit family. These were all done before then but I got a bit lazy with photography! :P Anyway, here's what's new...
Feral Ghouls!
Glowing Ones!
Reilly's Rangers!
Talon Company!
The Glowing Ones and Reilly's Rangers aren't my best work, I was getting a bit burned out at that point. But I'm still satisfied, and happy to have them done.
Still taking a bit of a break from this project to work on Necromunda figures, but I have been playtesting the rules I'm writing for playing these guys. Still a long way to go on them, but progress is being made.
While on vacation I rummaged through my old boxes that my family had stored away. I managed to find figures for about 10 Raiders with various armaments, and a set of Heresy Inspectors which I can re-purpose for Vault Dwellers. Both left over from a previously abandoned attempt at a Fallout project 5 years ago.
-
Nice additions! 8) very fallout-esque.
Cheers
matt
-
Thanks! :)
-
Great stuff, but those glowing ones really stand out !
Now I'm discontent with my own version of those guys >:(
;)
-
Thanks!
Feeling a bit inspired/revitalised on the project this week (might have something to do with an addiction to Fallout Shelter), so I got to work on some old minis I had laying around.
3 Heresy Inspectors and the lady on the left I'm not sure about, although her tab said Artizan. All with freshly sculpted Pip Boys. Behind them are two more Inspectors that need stripped, rebased and their Pip Boys added. As mentioned before, these were dug up from my parents' attic while I was on vacation, leftovers from when I tried a project like this about 5 or 6 years ago when I encountered the Fallout: Warfare rules. However, between not being too grabbed by the rules and there not being quite the same selection of figures back then, it fizzled out.
-
Perfect vaulties! 8) there are so many awesome fallout figures around now, and plenty that are fallout convertible.
Cheers
matt
-
Thanks! Agreed, we're definitely a lot more spoiled for choice these days when it comes to Fallout figures.
-
While I wait for suitable priming conditions for the Vault Dwellers, I'm working on the big guy:
Still a long ways to go yet...
-
:o Fwoar! That's a biggie all right! The skin looks dead on so far, can't wait to see more.
-
...the lady on the left I'm not sure about, although her tab said Artizan.
From the Artizan "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" pack "British Freelance Operatives". It's a versatile figure that lends itself well to conversions.
