Title: Game Counters
Post by: Craig on June 07, 2015, 11:10:53 AM
I have a question for you good people. If we were to produce a set of counters for you to use in IHMN what would you want?
Taking into account the KISS principle we'd like to reduce the variety of counters down to what is needed rather than desired (for that way lies madness  ;D )
I'm thinking something along the lines of Acted, Walked, Ran, KO'd, On Fire, Objective and one or two others. The set would have enough of each counter to cover a force of twelve figures with the idea being that each player gets their own set.
We're open to any and all ideas, but keep in mind that we'd have to get these produced and we're looking at a 20mm square, rectangle. lozenge or circle, so we can't put a huge amount of text on it.

We use:
Stationary (<3")
Walked
Ran
Shot or fought (depending on the phase)
On fire
Dying unless the medic can reach them in time (if one side has a medic)
For visual effect, we sometimes use a ketchup marker.

For knocked down, the figure is knocked over.
We usually use models for objectives.

Concerning the style of the counters, my personal preference is using graphics, if possible, instead of text. Like Dead Man's Hand's MDF set of markers, but in the proper Victorian style:

MDF would be my first choice for the counters, but it's certainly not a deal breaker.

I agree with Silbuster's suggestions: certainly Stationary, Walked, Ran, Shot/Fought would be mandatory. Not a fan of Dead Man Hand's footstep counters, but I'm not sure how else you could do it. Silhouettes of standing, walking, and running men, perhaps?  Fired could be a pistol, and Fought could be a knife? ???

Great idea, and I would definitely pick up a set or two. Or four.  :D

Hi Mike,

Who did your counters?

Who did your counters?

I wish I could claim credit for them, but they are available from Great Escape Games, the people who put out the Dead Man's Hand rules and miniatures. I believe 4Ground produces the MDF marker set for the rules, since all of their Old West buildings are advertised as for Dead Man's Hand. Although I am quite sure any of the companies that put out MDF buildings and terrain could do a sheet of counters.

Available here:   http://www.greatescapegames.co.uk/deadmanshand/dead-mans-hand-tokens.html

Hope that helps. Best of luck with the project!

Mike

Fought, shot, stationary, walked, ran. In MDF.

Is it bad that I never seem to have enough "On Fire" counters in the games I run? :D

I'm no artist: the previous images are just silhouettes of pictures of Victorian British soldiers that I googled then Photoshopped. But for what it's worth, here are two "on fire" counters:

You obviously should have an artist do your images in a consistent style!

Of course, you could go totally generic:

But I would prefer you locate a proper artist to give it that Victorian elegance. This is about as far as my google-fu and Photoshoppery will take me.

 lol

This is perfect! I do kind of want to see the revolvre with a hat, though. And maybe the knife should be held over one too?
