Title: 1920's archaeologist's tent?
Post by: Argonor on October 18, 2008, 11:02:11 PM
Anyone know of a nice model (the kind with the flap extended from the front to sit in shadow under with one's maps/whisky/cognac/tarots....), please?

I've experimented with doing my own, but I'm not quite satisfied with the result...  :?

1.- No. I don't know of any such model. I doubt if anything like this exist.

2.- Why not to try to make a tent similar to the one used for market stalls and use it as a separate model.

To my experience from actual life this kind of study relax is only after dark and you cannot work at site.

My partner and I are making lots of tents for Pulp gaming. I'm not sure what design you mean... is it a lean-to? If you could find a ref picture it might help :)

whilst googling with tent and safari as hitwords in the image department I got loads of examples.

A safari-tent might just do it... I think that the archaeologists would spend much time in the shadow, drawing sketches and recording the finds, letting the native diggers sweat in the sun  ;)

What I have in mind resembles this:

But I'll take a pic of the ones I made out of paper tonight... (please don't mock me!)

This is closer to what I made (without the car, and the raised flap is actually most of the tent-side:

I'm sure there won;t be any mocking :)

I was lucky enough to have some left over bandage from a first aid kit and I went to town with that, some cardboard and pva.

Still finishing them off. I'm looking forward to see what you've come up with!

I reckon you can do that Argonor, cerial packets would be thin enough yet sturdy to hold the structure together, tooth picks or cocktail sticks for the poles.

what do you reckon. ;)

I'm still using the GW paper tents I downloaded and printed out for my pulp tents.  They arn't based on anything that I know of but oddly enough they fit in well for many periods.  I've used them in several pulp games.

There is a pic of some of mine on my blog in this post.

WOOT WOOT! IW has got a new avatar up. WIth the addition of the handgun do we take that as your having trouble getting back or keeping the garage door?  :-)

Seen them thar tents up on the GW site some time back. With the shoddy way they have redesigned and taken down everything not sure if that pattern is still up.

Also wanted to say thank ya for the Tanks and Trolls link on your blog. Those guys are just plain nuts with some SERIOUS scratchbuilding skills in tow. :-)

Nope we still have no garrage door but it was gone before we moved in.  This photo was taken for a photography assignment.  We were suppose to use many and unusual props.  It's just a 1851 Colt knock off by Itallarie.  It does work though.

As far as the tents go you might be able to find them on the GW UK site.  I know they took them off the U.S. site.  Seems like the last time I had to track them down they were still on the UK site.

Oww, I hate the new layout for the GW site(Canadian, UK, and American are all the same too). I cannot find any of their various articles anymore.

Hey Ironworker, if you still got the Kroot tent PDF kicking around I could really use it.

The Kroot tents are still on the German GW site:

Hope that helps,

I didn't get around to taking any pics last night - kids wouldmn't sleep, and I got lazy, watching Sin City instead....

I'll see what I can do today...

Here's what I fiddlesd around with:

Of course it should have a centre pole, and some poles supporting the flap (which should be more curved)....

I dunno, I wish I could find something similar as a model....

Hey,

there's nothing wrong with that, bit of weathering and some poles as you say.

Good model.

Thanks, maybe you're right, I should just batter and weather it, then put it on a small base with the poles in place....  ::)

Yeah, I could scan it and send/upload it, if anyone would like it  :?

I made a template of one side on 5mm squared paper, here I used the grid as guide for precision, so it is very easy to copy. I then trace the template onto the paper I want (any colour could be used, I guess) 4 times, sides aligned/touching, add some glueing tabs freehand and cut it out.

Ah, thank you, Zephalo. The English GW sites keep changing everytime I turn around. It's a real pain.

Yeah it would be cool to have another paper tent model to play with.
Title: How about this tent?
Post by: Bookman1960 on October 21, 2008, 11:55:30 PM
The fine folks at RLBPS here in the Midwest USA offer a relatively inexpensive tent by Frontline Miniatures. (on the right in the picture below)

http://www.rlbps.com/RLBPFrt.htm (http://www.rlbps.com/RLBPFrt.htm)

I purchased three, painted them khaki and use them for safaris, adventures and archaeologicl digs.  They're getting rather smelly, as my bearers refuse to scrub them but at least they keep us dry.

The other products are likewise of use and value.

Just thought I'd put in my two-cents worth -- for what it's worth.

Oh, it's nice, too - I just have my mind set on one of those flap-things (I remember from the BBC-series about Egypt, in the episode about Carter searching for (and finding) the tomb of Tut that he had a table and some chairs under a large tent-flap.... I would like to minick that... ;) )

@Ironworker:
Could you remind me after the weekend? I'm going to London tomorrow, and the whole family are leaving for my in-laws this evening, where the wife and the girls will spend a prolongued weekend while I'm away, so I won't have time to do it before my return...

Argonor: I did a bunch with a bandage from a first aid kit. If I can find a pic... unfortunately they aren't painted yet. But all you do is cut the bandage and place it on top of a cardboard structure with PVA. Relatively easy. If I can get a pic up soon I will show you!

I'm using a 1/48th scale Verlinden tent . I think its really a M.A.S.H version .
I must take a better photo of it and stick it in my Displaced Minis Mummy album one day.

Nice tent, too. Are the adobes scratch-built or resin? I think they would fit in my collection if resin  ;)

Dan,

Ya got some nice stuff there on your pages. I especially love the Wild West figs and buildings. The buildings from scratch? :-)
