Title: TWD's Frostgrave (Skellies - 2 February)
Post by: TWD on June 18, 2015, 07:33:29 PM
After watching things unfold, seeing the game at Salute and playing it at Partizan I finally committed and ordered a Level 3 wizard set of Frostgrave. I’ve gone with a Chronomancer wizard because they sound the most interesting, even though the model isn’t as nice as the artwork.

However while I wait for the models and rulebook to arrive (due in early July) I remembered an old wizard I’d half painted and some Gripping Beat plastics I’d started assembling before I realised I couldn’t face painting a whole unit of them and thought I’d have a go at throwing a quick warband together so I can start playing when the package arrives. And also so I have a spare warband for the offspring to play with.

So here’s the wizard, a splendid old Ali Morrison (I think) Citadel wizard. It originally came in a set with a mounted version on a flying carpet. I painted that up years ago when I bought the model, but it’s now long since lost to the mists of time. (If anyone has one sitting in their lead pile they’d be willing to part with, get in touch..)
About a year or so ago I started painting this guy up but ran out of steam, but I think he’ll go very well with the plastic GB Arabs.

And here are the Arabs in question.

Thugs

Archers

Infantrymen

Thief

I was wondering where to get an apprentice and then it occurred to me to use another plastic arab, but to cut his spear down to make a staff. I’m going to raid my plastics pile and see if there are some packs and the like (and maybe a bound book or similar) to laden him down with.

Finally I grabbed another GB model, a plastic Viking and added an Arab head to create a knight model.

All of which comes to slightly too many points, but I'll figure that out later.

None of them particularly look like they’d survive very long in a frozen city, but I’m fine (and slightly amused) by that. My greenstuff skills aren’t up to adding warm clothing and furs and the like, and anyway this is supposed to be a “get you by” solution, rather than a definitive warband.
Going to try and slap some paint on this weekend.

An excellent start, I'm still kicking around ideas for my warband, but like you I think plastic may be the way to go.

Looks great. It's a nice theme.

I want to toy around with some of the GB plastics at some point, but haven't been able to justify getting a whole box (I play skirmish, I don't need 40 blokes!). It's good to see stuff like this: Looking forward to seeing the whole lot painted.  :D

The wizard is superb: Great mini, great paintjob

The wizard is superb: Great mini, great paintjob

Thanks affun, hopefully I'll get him finished soon.

Anyway, I've made some progress on some scenery. I fear that scenery, being very specific to the setting, may be a barrier for some. If I were an enterprising MDF scenery manufacturer I think I'd be drawing up some quick and dirty plans for ruined fantasy buildings. Fortunately I quite like making scenery so I'm just going to get cracking.

Both boys are quite excited by the game, and eldest said he wanted to build a tower. So here it is WiP. All his own work I helped a bit with cutting out and holding together while the hot glue dried. Needs some corner stones adding but it's a good start.

In the meantime I've built a very basic hovel.

And filled the bullet holes on some 40K ruins

I finished my first model for my warband.
A thug. Quick and dirty paintjob, but he'll pass muster.

And finally a bit more work on the ruined building.

Had a first try-oput of the rules today with my two boys.
We played with small warbands (3-4 models), no apprentice and just two spells each. Just a chance to get familiar with the rules.
We got the wounding rules wrong, but all had fun and i think they'll be up for another game soon.

Now I just need to assemble (and paint) the new models...

I assembled some models for the smallest boy's warband

(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r195/webdeak/Frostgrave/WP_20150716_002_zpsse0t8esn.jpg~original) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/webdeak/media/Frostgrave/WP_20150716_002_zpsse0t8esn.jpg.html)

(http://i144.photobucket.com/albums/r195/webdeak/Frostgrave/WP_20150716_005_zpseej1qu10.jpg~original) (http://s144.photobucket.com/user/webdeak/media/Frostgrave/WP_20150716_005_zpseej1qu10.jpg.html)

The models went together very easily, with minimal scraping needed of some very tiny mold lines.

The plastic seems to me to be particularly hard - less "buttery" than some  - but that's just an observation - it made no difference to assembly.

I really like these models - I'm no fan of Bob Naismith's sculpting style when applied to historical models, but the slightly cartoonish style works well for these. The faces are great - very characterful and evocative of menacing desperados.

The boys and I had a game on Saturday. Great fun was had by all.
They're so keen to play that many models and scenery remain unpainted, but what the heck - I'm hapy to seize on their enthusiasm.
Here's a few pictures.

Finest praise came from the 12y/o "It's a lot more interesting than 40K"

There are more pictures and a bit more analysis on my blog.

Thanks Sir_T. I've got the files for the fabulous cards Audrey has made, so I'll be printing some of them out.
But TBH eight is probably more than my old brain can cope with even with idiot cards. No doubt my kids will have all 80 memorised in no time :)

This is exactly what present day gaming is about (at least for me).

Getting a set of rules, dig out some models originally intended for another project, so they get painted, and thus at the same time rekinding the original plans.  lol

With the arab gang, why not change it from "Frostgrave" to "Sandgrave"?
Not a lot of difference between a city buried in snowdrifts and one buried in sand dunes.
Sand might work well with things like the worms (thinking Dune or Tremors) and the Genie in a bottle would be a natural.

Just a thought.

Actually I'd wondered about it before seeing your figures - I have colonial/crusade figures (and terrain) that I was considering.
Also thinking of using Conan & Prince of Persia types.

There's a fair amount of recycling or re-purposeing, but I have also bought the rules, the soldiers, a wizard, some bones skeletons and an ice troll...
...and I have my eye on some more stuff too.

I just used the Arabs as they were handy and I really couldn't face painting them for my El Cid army. Also arabic type figures in flimsy clothing in a frozen city makes me chuckle a bit.

A friend and I are sharing a lvl 5 + a lvl 1, so we also got the soldiers and all the wizards and specialists, but I can assure you that I'll be painting warbands of exactly the kind of models I need for one of my God of Battles, Saga, or other projects at any given time  lol

I really like the idea of the Arab warband, and I shall definitely use it to get a C&C arab force started (I also may put some LotR Haradrim to use).

Actually, as well as being useful for dungeon exploration, any desolate location could be covered by these rules, I think. Would be easy to make up some profiles for other types of creatures.

Enjoyed the report - it is great that the lads are really enjoying the game (as well as yourself).  The figures look nice - going to be characterful warbands when done.

I have seen a few people posting about shooters being a better buy than melee fellows.  That tends to be the case with Mordheim when there is not much terrain on the  board, but once you start deploying a fair amount of terrain to block lines of sight it balances out much better.  I wonder if that will be the case with Frostgrave.

I have been a fan of Mordheim ever since it was first released, and I am looking forward to playing Frostgrave.

Good luck with your next battle,

-Michael

P.S. Poor little zombie...

This is my aproach as well, and actuall ywhat got me onto the nickstartyer in the first place: I needed some thugs/bandits for a Open Combat warband, which could also be used for Lion Rampant.

Must admit that the arabic themed gang is growing on me as well: Been looking at some Gripping beast and Perry miniatures. (too many projects currently, though. Maybe when I get some more stuff painted)

Am pretty sure it will, as EVERY intervening piece of terrain worsens the shooters chance of hitting the target, so if you feel out'gunned', just pile on those ruins and keep your head Down  ;)

I've painted the treasure tokens from my Nickstarter. lovely litle models and dead easy to paint (though the chest is proving tricky to take a picture of).

I've also painted up three Reaper bones skeletons for wandering montser purposes. Pretty poor models IMO, but cheap and quick and dirty - they'll do.

Nice tokens, and I agree...out of the Bones stuff I've seen, I think the Skeletons are about the worst!  But as you said, cheap and ready to game.  I quite like the idea of Sandgrave (and yes I think the fluff/ideas support it).  Actually even moreso than Frostgrave when you consider that many cities in the Arab world were once the source of knowledge, libraries, technology, maths etc.

Keen to see more posts.

Posting those reminded me I'd not posted a finished shot of the "Arab" warband.
So here they are:

They look good! I like your wine cork idea for statues, I was going to use some plastic 54mm knights but ready to use objects for the base are harder to find at that scale.

Got some minis on my desk, looking at me. Seems they want to tell me something. o_o

Nice blog, as well.

Thanks both.
I can take no credit for the wine corks - I nicked the idea from somewhere, but I forget where (I blame the wine consumption).

Thanks, some of them looked a little lost on single bases - even pennies - so I doubled them up. They'll still just count as a single rat for gaming purposes but it makes them a bit more menacing I reckon.

Probably. Though I quite like the idea of some sort of slipping over/falling through the ice roll.
Maybe it's either a half move or move at full pace and on a 2-5 on a D20 you fall over and on a 1 the ice breaks and bad things happen.
:)

A nice bit of terrain. I love it when something so effective as this comes from simple ingredients!
In the Lich Lord supplement, the Battle on the River scenario has rules for slipping on ice, which could be used in this case.
Great paintwork on the soldiers too - you could certainly see them coming!

Thanks, yes. There's more than enough to fill the 3x3 board we use, so not all of it comes out all the time.

I think I need to make some more levels though - a bit of height wouldn't hurt.

Verticality is always a plus.  You ever try doing a sewer/catacombs layout beneath the main board, set up on a second table?  We played around with that sort of thing back in the 80s when the FLGS had a mad genius kitbashing terrain all the time and it worked well, although obviously very differently than a single board with lots of elevations.  Also took up a lot more room, but the guy owned the place so no one was going to tell him no.  :)
