Hi,
here are some miniatures I painted today for my Ardennes project. I'm planning on painting a squad of Germans and a squad of Americans for Operation Squad. I'm completely new to the whole WW2 miniature realm (having painted only fantasy stuff before), so please excuse the mistakes in terms of colour choices ;) The oakleaf pattern turned out too dark unfortunately, I have to tweak that in the future.
Anyway here are the miniatures:

I hope you like them!

Nice work - even at 28mm I find you need to use a bit of 'artistic licence' to make camo look right and / or visible
Are the Artizan minis?
-
Agreed, very nice work.
Cheers

Very nicely done 8)

Good start! Can't wait to see more! :-* :-* :-*
-
Very nice painting work, really clean.
-
Nice job!

Look great

Hi
They would fit nicely into my games ,lovely paint job,i wouldn't worry too much about the cammo being to dark , with the amount of realism you've painted in just think how worn and wet they might be , so a bit subdued is ok on some if not all.
Cheers AL

Thanks AL!
I just discovered your thread...absolutely fantastic and definitely motivating!
More minis to come here - stay tuned!

Theres another thread with all the figures on it.
Good luck with the painting.

They look fantastic !

Hello LAFers,
after a long time, there's finally an update. I completed a squad of "Paratroopers" for Operation Squad. The machinegun section is in progress. I guess I don't have to introduce them and why they are wearing coats... *cough*Bastogne*cough* (I know that's an old topic and BoB isn't really historically accurate...but I love this particular part of the Series so much I couldn't help myself...) All miniatures are Artizan, I mixed regular Paras and Winter troops to give them this rugged underequipped but bad-a$$ look >:( I tried to look them even more 'battered' by painting dirt and mud. I will go over my Germans (which were way too clean in the first place) to make them look equally muddy.

I hope you like them! More pictures just after the holidays, when I've got the time to put together some terrain.
Merry Christmas (and/or other winter holidays) for you all! ::)
-
Stunning work, they look really nice. And nice photo, very atmospheric and cold looking!
-
Stunning work as other said, and BoB is quite accurate. Winters is getting coat from other units, he said he was able to get some, plus acter the siege was lifted (by the time of Foy fo example) more supplies had gotten into. If you do not believe dick Winters there are pictures of Paratroopers in winter clothes (my source is Mark Bando...). By the way in Bando there is a picture of people from 2/502 PIR marching in the snow in January and they are similar to yours...
if you want to be picky... you have the M1943 airborne uniform (for Normandy) but in august the units received the green M1944 in time for Market Garden.
Merry Christmas and plenty of Miniatures under your Trees!
-
Arrigo, Thank you very much for these precisions...
Ah well a longtime LOTR player venturing into the historical universe...I should've done my homework.now I have to repaint those 1943 uniforms ;D
Cheers and merry Christmas!
-
do not worry about the yellowish M1943...
anyway in the past I had a so called historical expert... (funny thing he is a lawyer I am a Military Historian...) that say the green one were already used in Normandy... the change of unoform is not very well known, a lot of illustrations are based on Normandy, the cut of the unoform is not completely different (especially in 28mm), and so well you painted well!
There is also an old reference from the TMP of a chap who bought one of the prop uniforms made for Band of Brothers (M1944) and then realized that the green was fading to yellowish green quite quickly. He did not know if that was something real, or the stuff was just bad quality...
-
nice, all my ww2 28mm stuff is painted and based for battle of the buldge as well!!
-
Hi guys,
I've been busy an added a 3 man machinegun section to the group. Now they are ready for next weekend's convention in Germany. Due to time pressure, I haven't repainted the 1942 uniforms yet...might do that after the convention...
Anyways I hope you like them!

Hi,
thank you so much for the kind words!
I did manage to finish all the Germans aswell, having two complete squads for Operation Squad!
Somehow I didn't find the time to take pictures of them until now...

The image isn't 100% sharp, but I think you will be able to see most details. As with the American soldiers, I wanted to give them this battered, dirty look (something that really transcends across Antony Beevor's book about the battle of the Bulge: soldiers from both sides fighting in absolute grim conditions in terms of weather and supplies).
I hope you like them!
Currently I'm working on a typical farmhouse of the Ardennes region, pics to follow soon!
Stay tuned!
Cheers

Hey Marc,
Really good looking miniatures that you are presenting here. Having seen them in real life already, I think that the pics don't really do them justice (although they look nice on the pictures already). :)
Looking forward to seeing more from you.
Cheers,
Thomas

They look nice and gritty.

nice

Hi,
thank you for your kind words! Much appreciated!
Here is an update...having painted all of the needed minis (well...I think I'l paint a few more, just to have a bit more variation. Especially for the US soldiers...I want to add some troopers in regular Army uniforms to replace the Paras.)
I am now working on the first of the buildings I want to put on the field later on. Inspired by the great gaming tables that Alcal and other LAFers showed here in the WW2 section, I want to put as much effort in the terrain than in the miniatures themselves.
However, due to the fact that I'm only a poor student, I don't want to spend to much on terrain. Therefore I plan on making the buildings out of cheap materials (plaster, foamcore, wood, card etc).
I want my buildings to have the typical look of the Ardennes region, and Northern Luxembourg in particular. I spent quite some time in that area last year for an internship and have thus collected enough reference material in terms of pictures.
I struggled alot with the typical stone walls in the beginning, until a fellow hobbyist gave me a few of his plaster casts for those types of walls...the material he send me being incredibly brittle and fragile I made a silicone mold and used extremely hard plaster to cast these walls.
Now that this hurdle is taken I think the next buildings will be done much quicker.
A lot of detailling is still missing, the house will have full interior when finished and the outer walls need texturing aswell.
For this I would like to hear what you use for creating the wall spackle effect of facades...I used filler but the foamboard curled very much >:(
Enough chitchat, here are the pictures:

Please let me know what you think!
-
Those Germans look at least as good as those US paras :o
Great work with the building so far, it will surely look grand when finished. Have you considered using Vallejo products for the sparkle effect, they might not warp the foam board. Or then some kind of a more faster curing filler should do the trick.
-
Great looking figs, and the house is coming along nicely.
-
That is an amazing start. As one of the gamers lucky enough to vertigo game regularly on alcal`s terrain I can say that as you are trying to emulate algal you are off to a cracking start.
-
superbly painted. And all of them are Artizan? Couldn't find all of them in their store. Do you have the codes at hand of the miniatures you used? Especially the NCO.
-
Fantastic work!
-
Thank you all for the nice words!
@Siamtiger: the German commander is from the "SWW079 - Late War Germans (Winter) characters" set. Somehow it doesn't appear in the shop, but I did find the set through Google. The rest of the Germans are from the Late war sets (Late War Germans in Smocks) aswell as the Late War Germans(winter) sets. The guy with the MG34 is a conversion basing on a Late War German with a K98 and the MG34 comes from an Artizan Designs german Fallschirmjäger. :)
I used milliput to texture the outer walls of the house. It doesn't curl up and the texture is very good - I will post pictures tomorrow!
-
This is a truly stunning thread that I have only just discovered.
Top notch brushwork, so much character in those fellas.
The photography, scne setting and scenery is equally wonderful.
Top drawer, sir!
:-* :-*
-
Hi,
thanks again for the positive feedback!
Here is a small update on the texture of the walls, which I did with with milliput (which works extremely well for this task and doesn't make the foamcore curl up):
Next step is something which I'm relly looking forward to: making the inside of the building with furniture and wallpapers and other details to really breathe some life into it
I will also start working on a barn or stable and a farmhouse. I'm currently in the Ardennes region again, I will be scouting for reference material during the week.
Thanks for looking ;)

Fabulous stuff you've got on here!
