Title: Manorhouse Workshop/Maki Games Modular Underground KS
Post by: Modhail on June 21, 2015, 08:23:00 AM
Manorhouse Workshop, in cooperation with Maki Games have just started their Kickstarter for modular underground terrain:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rolljordan/modular-underground-project/comments (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/rolljordan/modular-underground-project/comments)

I've been filling their preparations on the Manorhouse Workshop blog for a while now. It's based on 10x10 cm squares and is the usual Manorhouse pretty.
They're bring somewhat mysterious with regards to stretch goals and add-ons, but have indicated they'll start revealing some soon.
I'm looking forward to seeing where this one goes!

This certainly looks interesting.
I shall follow it and see where it goes.

Nice concept, but no love for the Canadian backers, apparently  :'(.  Will probably pass unless that changes.

Well sculpted, but the "sockets" on each tile are really not appealing. Couldn't they find another way to fit the tiles?

These look really good.

Lofty monetary goal ...

That and the year long schedule.  My assumption is that they learned some painful lessons from the Makicube campaign and set the funding/delivery goals a little more realistically this time. I'm hoping they worked out the kinks and this one goes a little smoother.

It looks really nifty so far, but after noodling around with a graphics program to look at potential layouts, I think it's only going  to be really usefull with the first stretch goal adding two floor tiles per set.  The set as shown just has too high a ratio of sewers to floors for what I need it for.

I love my hirstarts dungeon, but I'd probably pack it in and sell it off on ebay in exchange for 10 x set.

If I had a Hirstarts dungeon I'd do that too... Sadly, I don't, so the 10x set is out of reach for me.

For now I just hope they get on with revealing the stretch-goals and add-ons!

Hmmmm... I'll have to see what they offer as extra stuff, as I don't think it is all THAT cheap. Postage also add to the cost.

I'm not sure I like the 'every wall needs an insert' solution, btw. (apart from open arcs, of course).

I'm in on this one, it's compatible with my dwarven forge stuff and i really like the look of it.
I hadn't thought to use it for fantasy tho, i was leaning more towards pulp and victoriana :)

Yeah I thought that too, surely it would have made more sense (and less parts) to make half the walls just be solid, there there would have been more space on the sprue for extra other bits.

I like the versatility of walls that can get swapped around myself :)

I hope they re-launch this.  It looks neat and I'd buy in, but they won't be hitting any stretch goals and at the moment it doesn't look quite worth the price.  I could use some sewers etc. too to go with my DF stuff.

Hope they take another swing at this sometime.

Does seem to be in trouble doesn't it?

Talk in the comments about losing the sewer tiles in favour of more stone floors and some discontent about unfinished delivery of Maki's last KS project rewards.

Better to end it now and sort all these issues out rather than limp on to the end and at best just scrape the funding amid a lot of confusion and specification changes.

Yeah, they're at 50% of funding, halfway there.  I know they set the goal as 100K, but you can imagine they're secretly expecting a couple hundred thousand, let alone a million that some similar KS have had.  At this point they may just barely scrape by.

I would have gone in immediately had this had more options.  A straight up building kit (with upstairs, doors, windows etc.) would have had me interested - since I hated the way Dwarven Forge did theirs.

I thought it was clever but the price meant I lost interest instantly. They make a big deal about how doing it in plastic makes it cheap etc but you really don't get anything usable in a basic set. To do a proper layout without needing to reuse parts needs around 6-9 sets really.

The price is on par with DF stuff (which is to say...expensive).  Though with $25 additional shipping the three unpainted sets becomes nearly $180.  I would buy in at this level if I thought we'd hit any stretch goals and get any more bang for the buck.

At first glance I thought they'd smash through a bunch of bonus goals...but I agree - as it stands now it's not a particularly good deal.

I think even if this campaign doesn't fund, the project will be back around.  If you look at the Mannerhouse blog they have a tremendous amount of work already invested and even have the first sprue tooled.  If they could come back and make a different base set work for the $50K they received on this pass I'd certainly take a serious look.

After making time to read through  many of the comments, I see two two design decisions that seem to have been a miscalculation.

First the decision to put walls and floors on the same sprues really locked in the set make up early on that then can't be easily changed.  If they'd put floors and walls on separate sprues they could have changed some of the ratios that some of the commentors were chaffing over.

Second, the plan to include sewers in the base set instead of the stairs and wooden platforms seems to have been a miss  with many people.

On the separate topic of value, I think it compare's favorably against the initial bundles from Dwarven Forge, but fairs poorly with where the DF bundles finished up thanks to their breaking many, many stretch goals.  Had this project reached a million dollars I'm sure it would have added enough to look like a better deal as well.

That's kind of my issue, they were quite obviously (if not explicitly) saying 'hey look at our new product! It's got all the quality of Dwarven Forge but because we're making it in plastic, it'll be more flexible and cheaper!'
Except it isn't.

Eh, I'm with you on the price issue, it looked like a 4' x 4' setup would be the 10 set pledge at $500 +/-.  Less expensive than the equivalent DF set, but hardly cheap.  I do think though that the system would have been plenty flexible, and (at least to my eye) a little more aesthetically pleasing the the DF pieces.
