Hello all,
I hope I find you all splendid in your war gaming, I am Ady McWalter, in recent times I have done 'a bit of work' for Warlord Games in the form of the Albion Triumphant supplements for Black Powder. Now before you throw me off here back to my Napoleonicness I would like to add that I am a keen Warhammer player.
I also play a lot of Ancient games using Warlord Games' rules Hail Caesar.
With Rick Priestley's permission I have modified Hail Caesar and set it in a fantasy environment. The rules and army lists can be found on my recently switched on blog , which you will find here :-
http://adyswargamesden.com/2015/06/shad ... sts-added/
So if you like Hail Caesar and Fantasy gaming then please take a look. I have had the kind permission of the gents at Warlord with this endeavour and as I said I have run the rules past Rick , and I am happy to say that he likes them
Please take a look and let me know what you think

I've yet to get round to trying Hail Caesar despite it sitting on my bookshelf for years now. I like a lot of what I read though so interested to have a proper read through your additions also.
Cheers.
-
Hey there, I've been looking for this exactly. I wiill give it a try and tell, how it went.
Thanks for sharing!
Cheers

This looks great.
Just the thing to try now my beloved Warhammer has morphed into Age of Sigmar.
In fact, shouldn't you just have called it Hail Sigmar?
Only one thing the Ferrell Orcs, did they appear in Anchorcman? :D

Just downloaded the PDF. It looks great. :-*
Question re. Turn sequence. "blue" is referred to - I assume "1st player". Should their also be "Red" otherwise I do not understand the reference. Or perhaps I have to read all the new rules additions? lol
I for one would like to see PDFs of the army lists. The blog messes with the format of the tables. Or maybe they are formated for a larger screen than my laptop has...
-
Hi Gents thanks for the kind words, I hope they work for you as they have done for my friends and I.
Dear Sir Barnaby Hammond-Rye , if you read the pdf in conjunction with page 24 of the Hail Caesar rule book it should make sense
let me know if not and I will sort for you

I will download these and have a read through.
We used HC for Fantasy games (with 10mm Warmaster figures) for a good couple of years.
-
I have been planning to try out Hail Caesar using some other fantasy mods I found, and will definitely read yours over and give them a try. Thanks you for sharing!
-
Played HC a few years ago when it was released and have always wanted to try a Fantasy version . I only ever played Warmaster once and it didn't get me excited, oddly enough it might have been the small 10mm scale of the figures more than anything else .
This looks good and I hope to organise a group game sometime to try it out when I can.
thankyou for all the hard work you put into this , are there any AAR online to have a look at ?
cheers Tom
-
Sorry being a bit thick , what does AAR mean ?
-
"After Action Report" - a game write-up. Unless Testudo had a sudden fit of the Long John Silvers.
-
yes sorry , an After Action Report ,,,,,, Ive already been out to the wargames room and laid out my Generic Medievil Human , Undead and Orc armies to sort out some lists and see what I can add from the unpainted pile to my painting que to make the Divisions all a little different to each other . This looks like it will be fun if I can find some like minded mates to give it a go
cheers Tom
-
Hi Tom , so I was being thick lol,
I have not done any AAr's yet but will do one for my blog this week, it plays really well I have found and am quite pleased with them
ady
ps check my blog for AAR's coming soon

Now before you throw me off here back to my Napoleonicness
S'ok.
I would like to add that I am a keen Warhammer player.
You're WHAT!?
;) :D
Looking good, from a quick skim. Looks like you've done more by yourself than the FHC yahoogroup managed! I'd be interested in taking a deeper look, with a few handy minis.

Often wondered myself. :) Too used to 'batrep'.

The majority of the content on the HC Fantasy group was written up by my mate Steve, following our games to try to port WM to HC. We saw HC as WMv3, and as we had big WM armies we wanted a newer system to play with, and HC gave lots of advantages over WM.
We struggled to get any real input from the yahoo! community. Most input was requests for pre-packaged army lists.
Ady's changes seem a lot more original, and keep with the core HC concepts and rules, rather than piling on loads of extra stuff. I need to read the magic again, as this seems the most different from what we came up with.

Hi Fred,
let me know how you get on with it, feed back is always welcome

Sorry Fred, meant no disrespect. It's been a while since I was there, but it already seemed a bit tumbleweedy when I first arrived. I can understand the Warmaster connection, and the frustration with the lack of feedback.

I will let you know - but it may be a while, there seem to be far too many new rules at the minute, and far too little playing time. This thing called work keeps getting in the way ;)

No worries - its interesting to see the stuff we did on the yahoo group keep resurfacing. We've not done anything on HC for years, we struggled to get the rest of our group interested.
-
This is brilliant!
I really enjoy playing Hail Caesar and am looking forward to giving these a go.
Fingers crossed we can get this as an official book through Rick Priestly & WG :-*

Thanks for for your efforts! I plan to spend some time reading and possibly playing. I picked up Hail Caesar in the first place primarily because of the fantasy forum and positive experience with Warmaster, and a mind to play it fantasy. Nice to hear a few thoughts comparing the two fantasy mods. I might do a little comparison myself.
-
I just ordered HC online because I caught wind of Ady's work. I recently picked up Warmaster (I, myself, prefer Mayhem) but am always interested in rules that have evolved like HC seems to have done.
-
I will be placing a few more lists on the blog tomorrow, if you fancy having a look and there will be a battle report to follow
Orcs v Dwarf and Feudal Human Kingdoms
-
Kingdoms of the Shifting Sands added to the site for you
-
Thanks!
I was going to request for Beastmen, but it looks like they're packaged in with Ruinous Powers.
Can I ask - maybe this isnt the place to ask - why do you play Hail Caesar as opposed to Warmaster or Warmaster Ancients?
-
I used to play both, but I have found Hail Caeser to be the next step , more flavour and depth. As it stands the rule set is my favourite , and with GW destroying my fantasy 'world' I needed a massed fantasy battle game to play , with no good ones around I thought why not mix a little fantasy into a great set of rules.
I think the blend works , but waiting for feedback lol
Hope this helps and thanks for asking

I am a firm believer in the newest version of rules, because *usually* this indicates a more polished version (glares at GW o_o ). I am also a sucker for the next shiny thing, so the two usually work out quite well!
HC arrives in the mail tomorrow. Looking forward to it, and I've been studying your lists - no promises, as my armies are still being assembled, but soon!

A few years ago me and my mate switch from WM to HC, some of the reasons were:
Endless multi rounds combats in WM - if you have a slight advantage you can grind away an enemy unit
Fiddly combats - stand removal follow ups etc
Supports not very effective in WM
Cavalry too good in WM
Very easy movement in WM (though only partly fixed in HC)
HC felt like a v3 of WM

I agree with what's been said above about WM vs. HC. I also loved WM, but HC is a more refined evolution of many of the ideas.
As far as HC vs. WFB, I was never thrilled about the way that heroes grew in power over the years in WFB, nor the "death stars" of more or less unstoppable killing machine units. I enjoy heroics and monsters and fantasy elements in games, but I don't like when rank & file troops become almost irrelevant, nor when it comes down to a game of rock-paper-scissor.* So I gave up on WFB before GW did, and have been looking at other games that suit my tastes better.
I've read through most of your fantasy adaptation and hope to put it to use at some point in the future. Also started passing the link to your site around to some friends, hoping to get a little interest.
* For example (older game, I haven't played in a few years,) I had an Empire army, opponent had a kitted out Bloodthirster that accounted for a huge portion of his points. Game came down to one thing: if my two cannons could bring down his beast, I would win because he didn't have a large enough army to put up a fight. But if he could take out my cannons first, then there was nothing else I could do to stop the beast from tearing my army to shreds. We could have saved the trouble of setting up all the figures and just made a few dice rolls and called it a game. Games like that seemed to become the norm, so I quit playing WFB.
-
Thank you for this. I was heartbroken when they killed off my beloved warhammer game for good (though, to be honest, I had been seeing other fantasy games since 5th edition). This will hopefully prove to be a revitalization of the game in my old group.

Thanks very much Gents your comments and spreading the word are appreciated

oh I am on with a Kingdom of the Lizard men and a Chinese mythology list :-)
-
HC arrived in the mail today - wow, hardback, color, with a sleeve....so fancy!
I've got all the Fantasy stuff printed out and put in a binder. As I read the HC rules, I'll decide if I want to print a second copy of the rules to put into the nice pretty book...I dont actually play historicals, after all :)
-
Chinese mythology list going onto the site tonight if anyone is interested :)

Ady,
I've been really studying HC and your mod, and I have some thoughts.
In the HC main book, army list entries have their unit type listed in their name inside a parentheses:
"Awesome unit of Death with Swords (Heavy Infantry)"
Your unit types are sometimes in the Special Rules section, but sometimes not (the first "Knight" entry on the Quassi-Bretonnian list has nothing). If you adopt the above-mentioned format, that would rock.
As previously mentioned, less abbreviations in the Special Rules would be cool.
Now - I think you've done a great set of work, and redoing some of this could be cumbersome. Therefore, I volunteer to do some of the grunt work, including an editing runthrough on the main rules. I'd just need the original files.
If interested, send me a PM.
Also, I wrote a bit of a comparison of WM and HC here:
http://kealios.blogspot.com/2015/08/how-warmaster-compares-to-hail-caesar.html (http://kealios.blogspot.com/2015/08/how-warmaster-compares-to-hail-caesar.html)
Thanks,

Hi Kealios, Thanks for the feedback, I will take you up on the offer as I have several things going on at the moment and would appreciate the help

Question. Some troops have short ranges of x/y, where one is a 0. My guess is that those are cases where the unit type either gets only support attacks or only ranged attacks, and not both. Is that correct? And if so, which is which?
Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the question, you are correct the x/ is the support attacks and the /y is the ranged attack so 3/0 would be three support attacks but 0 range attacks
hope this helps , get back to me with anything else

I hope there is still interest in this project. I haven't had a chance to play yet (nor any other games...) but I'm still looking forward to giving it a try. Continuing to paint figures with this in mind, and continuing to cobble together my own lists using yours as a starting point. I've got another question:
What is the impact of Bestial Infantry & Bestial Cavalry on gameplay? Is it just that they get the Bestial "Useful Rule?" If that is the case, the two (unit type and useful rule) seem redundant. I understand there is a basing difference defined in the Shadow Storm rules, but I think the original basing rules could just be fudged a anyway, since fantasy accommodates a wider variety of figures anyway.
I hope that doesn't sound like nit-picking -- though maybe it is? I'd prefer "streamlining." ;)

Hello
We've discover HC and its HCF version on the french forum (wher we've post an aar http://hailcaesarfrance.forumactif.org/t987-hcf-la-bataille-des-4-armees ) and we'd like to transform clan war list to HCF (we've lot of miniatures to play... :D).
Is there a website / forum where we can find the element to calculate the army cost for fantasy skill?
-
I'm interested in reading and trying your rules but I cannot find them in the link you provided.

Hi Ady,
Long time no see.
Funny, I’ve just started playing Warlords of Erehwon, again by Rick.
Ah the good old days
:-*
-
Hi,
I'm also trying Warlords of E, but that is what brought me here. Unfortunately the links to Ady's site have gone stale.
Does anyone still have the old pdfs for this project?
-
I’d like the PDF, too!

The project seems to be alive on Facebook, where you can also find the PDF's:
