Sooooo... I was wondering just why it takes me forever to paint a simple Russian infantryman, and I started counting up the steps, and finally realized...oh yeah, that's why. :) I know I should simplify, but... (I'm sure people will get a hoot out of all this)
V = Vallejo
PA = V. Panzer Aces
1. Clip heads from sprue (I do 4 or 6 at a shot); cleanup; attach to facing nails with bit of two-sided tape. Plunk nails into white Styrofoam from Michaels.
2. Prime heads with Vallejo black surface primer (brush-on. Florida--humidity is an issue)
3. PA Flesh base on face and ears.
4. V. Game Colors Flesh Wash heavy on flesh.
5. PA Flesh base on face and ears.
6. V Flat Flesh + PA Flesh highlight on face and ears.
6.1 Reapply wash on eye-sockets if required (usually yes).
6.2 Pale or dark red on lips (whatever color you have).
7. V Black cleanup on underside of shako visor, chin scales, hair, as appropriate.
8. Citadel Brazen Brass on chin scales (if appr.); shako front device.
9. V Ivory points on shako cords, flounders, etc. Agonizing, but the more time you take here, the cleaner it will all look.
10. (Varies) V. Leather brown on hair.
11. V. Cork Brown highlight on hair.
12. V. Dark Brown Wash on hair.
13. Review and cleanup, as required.
14. Clip bodies from sprue; cleanup mold lines (bring a Snickers for this one); attach to nails with hot glue or two-sided tape.
15. Clip backpacks/ammo box/sword from sprue; cleanup mold lines; attach to finishing nails with two-sided tape.
16. Glue heads to bodies, being careful not to muck up the painted face w/excess glue or fiddling.
17. Prime bodies with V. black surface primer, being careful not to brush primer on painted head.
18. Prime backpacks with V. black surface primer.
19, Basecoat jacket with V Very Dark Cammo Green, being careful to avoid the center of the back.
20. Basecoat collars, cuffs and lapels with V Red 926.
21. Basecoat trousers with V. Iraqi Sand/V. Pale Sand. Recoat as needed to cover.
22. Basecoat overcoat with V. Khaki Grey (both bodies and backpack assembly)
23. Basecoat musket wood with Foundry Spearshaft A.
24. Basecoat straps with V. Blue Grey Pale, (both bodies and backpack assembly). Leave separation on chest.
25. Basecoat gun metal and canteen on backpack assembly with V. Gunmetal Grey.
26. (Can be done earlier) repeat Flesh steps from Faces/Ears on hands.
27. Basecoat sword sheath and bayonet frog with V. Leather Brown.
28. First highlight jacket with V. Russian Green.
29. Second highlight jacket with V. Russian Green/V. German Camo Bright Green.
30. First highlight trousers with V. Pale Sand/V. Ivory.
31. Second highlight trousers with V. Ivory.
32. First highlight sword sheath/frog with whatever light tan you have.
33. Wash sword sheath/frog with V. Brown Wash.
34. First highlight collar, lapels, turnbacks with V. Carmine Red.
35. Second highlight the above with V. Vermillion (only where light would hit).
36. First highlight overcoat with Reaper Master Series Green Ochre (or any similar).
37. Second highlight overcoat with Reaper Faded Khaki/V. Pale Sand.
38. Wash overcoat with V. Dark Brown Wash.
39. First highlight on gun wood Foundry Spearshaft B. (use this to clean up any overpainting from the trousers)
40. Second highlight on gun wood Foundry Spearshaft C.
41. Paint straps on backpack with V. Off-White.
42. Highlight gun metal + bayonet and the canteen with V. Steel or V Oily Steel. (Cleanup any messiness from the straps here)
43. Highlight straps with V. Off-White or PA Stencil (both body and both sides of the Backpack assembly)
44. Citadel Brazen Brass on sword hilt; end of sheath; top of frog; rings on musket.
45. Freehand (aaaarrrrrggghhhhh) either Jaeger Regimental number; Rifle emblem or Grenadier emblem on ammo pouch.
46. Perform any general cleanup required--shoes usually need a pass with black.
47. Basecoat top of shako; bill; top part of backpack; ammo pouch with V. German Grey. (Cleanup any messiness from the straps here)
48. Basecoat felt part of shako; shoes; sides of backpack with V. Dark Grey.
49. First highlight top of shako, etc. w/ V. German Grey/ V. Luftwaffe Uniform.
50. Add a lighter gray to the above and edge highlight.
51. First highlight felt of shako and backpack sides with a lightened V. German Grey.
52. Paint proper shako pom-pom (1st Battalion will be V. Ivory w/ a V. Russian Green Center).
53. Basecoat right shoulder tab with proper color (for second regiment, V. Ochre Yellow or V. Gold Brown Work)
54. Highlight right shoulder tab with V. Yellow Ochre/V. Deep Yellow.
55. Citadel Brazen Brass jacket buttons; sleeve buttons; shoulder tab button; any other cleanup required (shako, sword, etc.).
56. Scuff shoes by dry-brushing a tan on them.
57. Wash shoes with V. Dark Brown wash (I wait until basing before paying a lot of attention to the shoes).
58. Review and cleanup (I usually have a little V. Russian Green cleanup @this point).
59. You can paint the appropriate colors on the sword cords (see Gingerich), but I am waiting until I have the unit assembled. It's a minor detail.
60. Scrape any paint or primer that strayed onto the square of the back.
61. Remove backpack assembly from nail and glue to back of figure. Army Painter works well for this, as it gives you time to work. So does Testors in the black container with the long dispenser.

Adding an Austrian contingent might speed things up.
Personally, I plan on doing a large body of French in greatcoat (fusiliers only, with shako pompoms removed) - which I will use for either side in 1813 & 1814.

That all sounds very familiar, but it pails in comparison to doing French Cuirassiers!

I'm very excited--by the 2062 anniversary of Borodino, I should have a couple of regiments ready to go! Otoh, their WW2 brethren are starting to look good. :)
