Title: Some flora for my Bandidos ...
Post by: hohlinger on October 26, 2008, 07:14:05 PM
... had some time today and used it to build a little more flora for my Wild West scenery ... ;)

In the first picture you see the cacti after basing with sand and cat litter on white plastic ... the cacti are from Pegasus Hobbies and look unpainted a bit unreal ...

Here you see the painted version:

... and together with the other cacti:

I hope you like it ...

I have a packet of those but have been putting off painting them for awhile . Yours look very nice but am wondering what you undercoated them with. ???
Title: Re: Some flora for my Bandidos ...
Post by: hohlinger on October 27, 2008, 05:55:20 AM
First I washed the cacti with warm soapy water because I read somewhere in the forum there would be problems with the paint otherwise and then I sprayed them with matt black after basing (I did not show the picture because you will only see black cacti on a black base with black stones  ;) ).

After that I painted the base in brown (it is called terrabrown from the Toom market) and then drybrushed in the three sand shading colors from Foundry.

The cacti where painted last in Phlegm green shades (also from Foundry) - the Phlegm light tone was also drybrushed to pick out the highlights of the cacti.

Hope this helps ...

I have just started to paint the same cacti! I have just based them and undercoated them black. Do you know what the equivant GW colour is to what you have used for your cacti? I really like the colour.

TT.

@ Terrible Tim:

You can probably look here:
http://colors.silicon-dragons.com/full_line.php

There you can find similar colors (or nearly similar) of different labels ... the shade (28A) is a very dark green and the mid tone (28B) and the light version (28C) are "yellowish" greens, as seen on plants very often.

The color match site gives you as equivelant a "Knarloc Green" in the GW Foundation palette which seems to fit very well if I compare the color on the monitor to the Foundry pot. From the GW Citadel palette you can use "Snot Green" for the second shade and for the third shade probably "Camo Green" because of the great amount of yellow in it ... but I am not quite sure how the colors look in reality. Anyway I hope this helps a little bit ...

Those are excellent and very life like. Almost look like the ones at my inlaws house. Now someone needs to make some prickly pear models.

Ooh, I missed these somehow. Splendid!

I'm looking for something like this to replicate the cactus hedges of Gaza. Can you buy those prickly-pear style ones separately? I'm not sure if the pipe kind of cactus grows in the Old World, so probably wouldn't want any of those. Any Cactus experts out there?

Title: Re: Bandido Flora - Gaza Cactus
Post by: Major Weenie on January 05, 2009, 08:33:22 PM
The photo of the 'Gaza Cactus Hedge' looks a lot like some of the 'Cactus Fields' in photos from The Mexican Revolution.  (It always comes back to La Gran Revolucion.)  Anyway, I've been considering ways to construct these, without spending a fortune on Gaming/Railroad cactus models.  Here are my two theories;

1.) Cake decorations.  In the US these are relatively cheap, much cheaper than 'real' models of the plants, and usually come with 1 model of the 'Tall Wild West Sonora Cactus' and 2 of the prickley pear, Gaza Hedge style cactus.  If you go to a wholesaler then they might be even cheaper.

2.) Take a photograph of the neighbor's cactus in the front garden. (It is, after all, California)  Create a flipped image in Photoshop and print it linked at the bottom.  Glue the photo over some thin cardboard.  Having created a 'back' and 'front' for one cactus, repeat numerous times, and see if this works to crerate the field/hedge.

We'll see if I ever get around to it.

Those look fantastic.  If I hadn't seen the bright green plastic photo I would easily mistake those for real cacti teathered to the basing somehow.

Post by: Hitman on January 06, 2009, 01:03:48 AM
I painted the same pack this past summer. I did almost the same as hohlinger. Here are my steps
1) Wash in hot soapy water - let dry 48 hours...I'm extreme in this, but I want to make sure they are dry.
2) Glued them to a variety of thin steel washers
3) Primed black - "el cheapo" Flat Black spray paint from WalMart
4) Delta Ceramcoat Deep River Green - drybrushed
5) American Forest Green - drybrushed
6) Americana Leaf Green - drybrushed
7) Americana Light Avocado - drybrushed
8) Americana Moon Yellow - drybrushed
9) Added real sand from a big bag of playground sand bought at Home Depot
10) Matte Coat - "el cheapo" matte coat spray paint from WalMart
11) Testors Dull Coat
Although the bases differ, they look exactly like hohlinger`s. By the way, I like the different base style you did.

I know a lot of people like to use GW paints, but I don`t like the price and I find they dry out very quickly, so I use the paints listed above which I purchase on sale at $1.00 - $1.49 at Michael`s. I found them mindless to paint and actually enjoyed painting them up really quickly. I also picked up some of the Saguaro cacti (tall cacti) at Historicon and painted them up the same way.

@ Hitman:
Can you send in some photos of your cacti??? I used Foundry colors and they are expensive too ... and your paints seem to be a nice alternative.

Thanks - bought a large haul of palm trees from Pfeil and Holing ( http://www.cakedeco.com/cgi-bin/webc.cgi/st_main.html?p_catid=10 ) last year, though, also some of those, so I have plenty  ;)

They do not seem to have cacti, though, and googling did not reveal anything.

"Cactus 1" should work for the 'Gaza Cactus Hedge.' It's made of soft plastic, so I cut them up and glue them to steel washers, or discarded CD's, to make various sizes and shapes.

If you back up to the TREES list there's another (Sonora ?) cactus, and some pine trees.

Stopped at Michaels (the craft shop) today. I found a new thing I had not seen before.Scene-A-Rama from Woodland Scenics. I picked up the desert plants one. The set includes cacti of various sizes and shapes. Also has some tall grass and red and yellow for making flowers on some of the cacti. The cacti are all made of a soft plastic. I will be trying them and let everyone know how they work out.

Finally,
Took some photos (evil new camera, etc. etc.) of the plastic, cake decoration terrain features.  Here's where much of it can be purchased.
BakingStuff.com:  (https://www.bakingstuff.com/store/home.php?cat=36)
And now some photos.

Cake decoration plam trees, on an oval piece of wood, with sand, and a Copplestone figure for scale.

Michael's craft store 'green plastic bush thing' disassembled, and glued onto a steel washer.  Technically it shouldn't be a Greek for scale, but it was the only figure with a base small enough to fit.

Cake decoration cactus, with Wargames Foundry conversion (originally Indian Mutiny I think) for scale.

Cake decoration cactus, with Wargames Foundry cowboy (no conversion here) for scale.  Oh, this cactus only comes in one, rather tall for 25mm, version, but it's easy to cut up into various smaller plants

I have a bunch of different cacti from several manufacturers. Old Glory, Reviresco, & Monday Knight Produtions. I also have a couple of the IMEX Southwestern/Alamo accessories sets in 1:72 scale. The cacti all mix prety well together. And the IMEX set has a number of really small Cacti that I added to some of my figure bases.

Thanks so much to everybody and I am looking forward to some pics of your finished cacti.

Hohlinger,

I am very tempted to get some of the Pegasus Hobbies cacti as a result of seeing your posts here.

Is there any chance you could post a photo showing the Cacti next to a 28mm figure to guage the scale please?

Also very much looking forward to seeing your Mexican buildings, having just spent the last year building my own town.

@ Malamute

Of course I will ... tomorrow will be a perfect day to make some photos and I will post them afterwards. Did you buy Cacti #1 (No. 6507) and/or #2 (No. 6508) from Pegasus??? I mixed them to get a realistic look. I use the very small Cacti from the smaller set for basing some of my figures instead of using gras or bushes.

By the way it have been your posts with your mexican town and the posts with the single adobe buildings which made me build a church for my game ...  ;)

@ Malamute:

Here are the photos for size comparison.

First picture with two Artizan figures:

Second photo with one Artizan figure on the left and a Foundry figure ("Tuco") on the right:

Third photo with Tuco on the left and a Dixon miniature on the right (they are a little bit smaller then the Artizan and Foundry guys):

Finally two Dixon figures:

In the background there are some Snapdragon houses (flat pack kit) used to show the scale of the cacti ... and as a preview on the finished buildings  ;)

The image quality is not the best (I have some problems with the camera for a while and do not know what is wrong?!) but I hope they help a little bit.

Happy painting ...

Wow, those are really impressive buildings you have there! Are they hand made or resin? Do you also have any other photos? I'm working on making some buildings myself, and your buildings are giving me some ideas. I really like the way you painted the windows, that's the last step on my Hardware store I'm finishing.

The buildings are from Snapdragon/Moondragon (http://www.moondragons.com/index.html) and made of resin. Is your hardware store shown anywhere in the forum? I am thinking about adding some lettering on the windows but I am still searching for ideas ...

I just took some photos, sorry about the poor quality. I used my cellphone, and the lighting was pretty poor.  It's essentially the sample in the back of the LOTOW in the back of the book. I just need windows, and some minor touchup. I've also a saloon in the very basic stage.

Nice building. I would prefer lettering with a pencil instead of printing it on a paper but I am still searching for the correct way to do this ... preferably in different colours ...  ???
