I've got a bit of time on my hands and decided to do some sculpting.
I give you Captain Blake WIP; he's 34mm to the eye. He still needs arms, a cap and a bit of cleaning up. When I'm done with him, I'll probably have a go at Mortimer. C&C welcome!

Very nice! It's nice to see a more naturalistically proportioned mini.

I'm ashamed to say I don't know who Captain Blake is but regardless, this looks a splendid sculpt - congratulations.

Thanks for the feedback!

I like minis with more realistic proportions, but they are a pain to sculpt and paint. I've also tried to sculpt him with a ligne claire design to fit the style of the comics.

There's nothing to be ashamed about not knowing who Captain Blake is meant to be. He's one of the heroes of a very pulpy (and slightly ridiculous) Belgian comics happening in the late fourties and fifties. The drawing shares the ligne claire aesthetics as Tintin . It's quite famous in French speaking countries but didn't have the same international success Tintin had. Below, I've posted what probably is the most iconic image form the Blake and Mortimer comics.

The Yellow Sign.
Brings back fond memories of my early youth, when I spent more time at the local village library than on the football field...

Thanks for the background. Captain Blake has a British sound to it (he looks British on the drawing as well) so I'd never had guessed he was a Belgian cartoon hero... :)
Referring back to your sculpt, the trenchcoat looks great - the wind-whipped effect is excellent. I may have to buy one of these if they become available commercially.

Great so far, please say you are going to get it cast and for sale.
Would love to see a Yellow "M" and an Olrik too.

Thanks again for the nice feedback.
I didn't consider casting the mini but if there is a demand I would consider having a small series cast for interested fellow LAFers. I'd also be happy to do another few characters from the comics (Olrik was planned already)
However, casting them raises two issues. The first is whether the mini is castable. Initially it wasn't as the trench-coat created gaps and overhangs. However, with a bit of work I managed to fill them without any visible change to the mini. Thus, it should be castable in principle at least in resin but it would have to be in three pieces (with the two arms separate).
The second issue is IP. I don't feel it would be reasonable to ask for a license; life's too short and I wouldn't want to make any money apart form recovering the casting costs. I guess I could get away with calling him Major Black and his friend Martimer, both fighting the nefarious Ulrik ...

Sure wouldn't be the first not-figure out there...

Looking good so far :)

He's essentially done. The arms are attached quite loosely, so that they can be easily removed in case the mini were to be cast.

Let me know on here or by PM if you were potentially interested in a copy. If there is sufficient demand I would consider having a small series cast in resin (metal is probably not an option given the overhangs). Please also note he's a 1/48 (~35mm).
I'll probably do Mortimer next , but have to catch up with work first.

I got some more time and started working on Mortimer, I also made some slight changes on Blake. C&C welcome.

Impressive work! I think you have really captured those characters. ;)

Looking good, love the trench coat :)

A bit of a blast from the past. I had these two lying around for nearly a couple of years and decided to finish them. They might not my best sculpts but with a lick of paint, they should look fine on the table.

Nice work. I didn't think Blake looked Blakelike earlier, but I think he looks good now. Mortimer is good. I am fond of the series, although I haven't read them all. A bit large for my gaming though. I would like to see them in a game when they are complete though.

Very cool! Excellent work.
