Title: The good, the bad and the Andy (latest: Dracula's America)
Post by: Yggdrasil on July 21, 2015, 07:51:19 PM
Howdie!

The Cast:
Hi, I'm Andy (and I'm a Wargame-addicted  o_o)
I'll use this thread to show off my steadily growing Wild West collection.
This thread will be updated at irregular intervals. I'm going to keep the main-title up to date. So you'll always keep up with the latest main-feature of this thread.

The Story so far:
The whole Project started early 2014. I had asked some friends to help me building my own desert-gaming-board (because i had no idea how to build the basement of such a gaming table). After the polysterene boards were finished I started to make the first terrain features. Since then I'm constantly adding western styled terrain features like cacti, different Buildings, and soon a Mining Complex.
I want to cover as many "typical" wild west settings as possible. There will be a Bank-robbery theme, a stagecoach theme, a train set and a whole indian village with buffalos in the near future (i hope later this year!).
To give you a small taste of whats coming up I'll show you a sneak pic of my gaming table:

Thank You for the kind words  :)

Today i tried to paint fire. I started with a white basecoat adding yellow, orange and red to the layering mixtures. I'm not right pleased with the overall look of it  :?

Fire isnīt easy to paint. Maybe this helps you a bit:
My first attempt of painting fire. I didnīt dare to paint torches yet, but I think I should now. Would you agree?

Today i tried to rework the fire a little bit. I added a bit more white and orange to the basic mixture with a small highlight of black. And i started to add smoke as well.
The next step would be to add more 'glow effects'.

@ All: Thank You for Your Answers.  8)

I've finished the Wagon today. Using Michi's astounding example I added yellow and orange to the surrounding areas forming some kind of 'glowing effect' (Thanks Michi for the fantastic picture  ;))

Now I'm going to finish the arrows and I'll add some victims. I think I'll put them on bases so I can add or remove them from the scene.

Here's a little Sneak Preview of the next Minis I'm working on right now:

I love the style of the BS Minis, too. They are awesome! But I know what you mean. Most faces are very similar (at least this makes painting them a lot more easier  lol )

Introducing the Earps:

Sadly I only managed to finish the next two models for the law men.
I know that the Earps wear black in black. But I thought this would be a too big contrast to the other lawmen. Therefore I use 'normal' color palettes for the Clothes while Dusters and Hats will be Black.

Cheers  ;)

The pear handle comes out realy nice but I think it will be the only one in my collection, making it rarer and an 'Earp'-thing ( this gives me more reasons to play less banditos and outlaws but more frequently the lawmen :D)

Lovely, :-* :-* the colour, texture and basing works well, and there is plenty of eye candy in those tomb stones, and there is cactai! You may need a hearse now to take the dead up the hill ;)

Another person late to this thread - a lot of very nice work.  Too late, likely, to try but when I saw your first version of flames I thought it would be interesting to try using a little gloss medium on the flames to see how that worked - flames have a translucent quality to them.

I do wonder about the Chinese laundry man - he seems to have an awfully thick beard for a man of that descent, all of the people I've know of such descent, quite a few, have always had very sparse facial hair.  But, heck, its a big country and there must be some men with the right ancestry to grow such a full beard.

Love the boot hill, especially the removable headstones.  I would have saved the skeleton as a removable piece for the burning wagon, though.  That's going to freak out all the ladies attending the next funeral in the cemetery!

Now, I just need to find time to get to my own old west collection!  Inspiring.

Sadly I've forgotten to list up a few things like the Shovel i used (which is selled by www.thomarillion.de, a very great side for small and decorative stuff as well as awesome terrain features. Please check it out!)
I've completed the list in the original post.

Very interesting idea! I still have some water-modelling effects left off an older project. I'm going to use it for a torch to test the overall look!

You are absolutely right :o .Don't know what came into my mind while painting the beard. After thinking about it, the beard does look a little odd. I'll change it immediately!

At first i was going to use skelettons on that burning waggon. But than i decided to use wounded models instead (still in mailing-process). It should let the scene look as if it has happend  just right now. But I have to admit, the skeletton is freaking out all Ladies. the only person attending the boot hill so far is the Gravedigger  :)
I would be glad to see another Old-West Collection. It's always a pleasure to see other's work and find inspirations  :)

As promised, here is Boot Hill Part-2: I have decided to split up the graves in up to 4 area-terrain features. This not only makes the Graveyard bigger but gives some more place for Details as well  8)
The coffins featured on this piece are made by wood. It was quite a bit of work making those (the next ones will be bought  lol )
The small decorations (such as the petroleum-based lamp, the shovel and the pickaxe) are selled by thomarillion.de

Petroleum-based Lamp: I used the same painting method as mentioned in the burning-waggon posts (page 1+2)

And a third area-terrain piece:

I was looking for another Set of Pick-Axes. Look what I have found instead:  Another 12 (unpainted) Tombstones!    ;D
(http://i.imgur.com/ZabdsEZ.jpg)
I really thought that I'd painted all of them  :?

I keep up the plan of using only 4 area-base terrain features (even if now 5 to 6 would make more sense). As You can see, I'm not the only one mourning about the overfilled graveyard   lol
(http://i.imgur.com/XcAgZkG.jpg)

I will not make a 5ths or 6ths area-terrain base. Instead the lose Tombstones are going to be used as 'fillers':
This makes the Boot-Hill a little more compact looking.

Here is a little Update:

I've updated the chinaman. I changed the beard and recoloured it. Now it is much more thinner and white.
The Cowboy on the far left will be used as an armed citizen. The Packs of Dynamite are going to be used in a Scene I'm working on right now.

The next Thing I want to show is another waggon. You can remove the drivers and horses to make either a used or unsied wagon.

Last but not leas, I am very pleased to show off the finished burning waggon! I've added a bunch of shot Cowboys and Horses:

Hi there.
I'm quite busy in painting my Bolt Action Stuff right now (British Forces are on the march  8)) . Therefore I have no actual News for this thread  :(

So I use the time to anwser some of your posts :)

@ Mason:
Thanks, pal.
I'm constantly working on adding more Details to my terrain pieces. That is one of the main reasons because I'm struggling in posting bigger stuff (like houses): Even if they look finished right now it can (or will) happen that I'll add additional stuff in the near future. The waggon is a good example for this. After it was done I was lurking around your thread. Seeing those horse-drawn waggons you built I realized that my terrain pieces look a little bit inhabited. So I used some old Foundry Cowboys, a lot of Greenstuff and old Plastic Horses to make this optional used/unused waggon terrain feature. I like thge mechanic and will use it for different stuff in the future (this gives more variety).

I am looking forward to seeing what you have planned with the new stuff.
 Cheesy
Me too!  lol
I'm planning some sort of bank robbery scene. The first act will be to steal dynamite. The second act will feature a horse drawn piece of field artillery. After which has been set up the final act will be played: The Outlaws have two options to get into the bank: They could use the stolen Dynamite to blow up the main door, or they can make use of the Field Artillery to destroy the building (hopefully the safe will stay functioanl after the big boom ^^). After I have finished the rules I'll post them in a new thread.

@ Bertrand:
Thanks for your motivating words. I'm glad that you enjoy the Markers.

That's true, Mr.Wu still looks a little bit grumpy :D Maybe i should call him 'grumpy old' Wu from now on  lol

Will you be posting pictures of your buildings?
You are welcome :)

Here are the first pics. I think it would be a good idea to start with Madame Sybelle's.
It was one of the first terrain pieces I built for the western-gaming table. Since then I was constantly adding stuff as you will see on the pics:

First Version:
This pic shows quite the 'basic' version of the terrain piece. I planed to make a 'traveling cathouse'. This idea came from the Lucky Luke movie featuring terrance hill (yes it's true, i am a very big fan of Bud Spencer & Terrance Hill movies, especialy their western movies  like 'They Call Me Trinity' Best Food-eating scene ever!!!!  8) )
The terrain piece features some basic Stuff: Tents (you all know what might happen in there... My guess: Talking  lol), an improvised washing room and of course the Sign saying: 'Madame Sybelle's Girls'.

Current Version:
I've added a lot of stuff. different sorts of Gras Tufts, More girls, the typical trenchcoat dessed guy and of course a voyeur.

One last thing to mention: I'm not quite sure why eeach game we play on my gaming table ends in a capute the flag competition: Everyone tries to conquer this place   lol

I promise that there will be new stuff soon. I'm still quite busy in painting my WW2-Bolt Action Stuff (I would say 75% done).
But there is still some time to do some work on upcoming Wild-West Buildings.

Post-Office
It is still in an early stage but You can see the direction it's going. This Building will be a space-filler, therefore you can't play inside.

Sorry for bad picture quality. I had to rearrange some of my Standlights  :?

Fence
I bought those fences for ACW gaming. I glued them onto bases and than they were put in a box. After searching for some hobby stuff I've found them lying unfinished in the box. So I painted them up and added a little stable. With most gluing already done the whole Terrain Feature was done in about an hour.

Somehow I missed the travelling cat house - outstanding! That I really do have to do in 54mm  ;)

Looking back through I spotted one tiny flaw in all the excellence and for a while I couldn't put my finger on what it was - the signs in lower case letters like handwriting. Most would have been the work of proper signwriters and as such done with a high level of skill, and (OK I accept I'm a pedant with this one) but all the signs I have ever seen in photos are all UPPER CASE ie capital letters - lots of different fonts but always caps??

But this is a very small point when weighed against the overall brilliance of your work.

Thanks, pal.
But I fear that all the Details are one of the biggest problems I have right now. I try to keep all Terrain pieces at a certain 'ready to use' state. But there are some pieces of terrain that draw way too much attention. So many things to do right now: I still have to finish the last piece for the Boot Hill. There is much more work needed on the Post Office introduced earlier in this thread and it is a shame that the interiors of the Jailhouse and the church are still adobe and raw!
I think that might be one of the reasons why you are going to see the same Terrain piece over and over as its state will be updatetd, reworked or added by much more detail (I know my habits.... I can't finalize my hobby stuff  :?  lol).

Thank You. I had never worked with Wood before. Regarding the timber work I still learn more and more about how to use it by trying out new stuff or lurking around the depths of the lead-adventure-forum to get inspired by the fantastic work of other users.
You are totally correct. Season 1 of Hell On Wheels do was one of the most inspirational things for this terrain piece  ;)

Post Office
I showed you some early WIP-Pics of this one earlier in this threat. But I wasn't quite pleased with another 'brown' Building so I tried something new on the Post Office. Here is my first coloured Wild West Building!
There is still some work to do on this one (I'll add some posters and the sign will be painted as soon as I know which symbol to use). But most work is done  8)Man, I had some gripes while painting the whole thing blue. But seeing the finished version my stomach is soothing  lol

It's hardly noticable but I added some transculant foil to the opened windows. Unfortunately the flash absorbs it  :?

Maybe I'll add a Stage Coach Center to my town later on. But untill this happens the citizens need to go to the Post Office for sending their letters.

I am Back and today I have some good news.

At the beginning of this thread I mentioned that I try to have at least a bank-setting or a mine-setting until end of this year. Maybe I'm able to finish both settings at Once  8)
I am currently building an 'El Paso' styled bank, as can be seen in the 'Man with no Name' trillogy (no pictures taken yet).
The other project I am constantly working on right now is a small Mining-Complexe.

Here are some pics first. The first two Days of this project were spend on cutting the manufactured stone foam board and adding some clay to fill up spaces (no pictures taken). I don't know which company produces those stone foam boards. A friend gave it to me mentioning that he has no need for it.

Day 3: Adding the Mine Entry. I used google to search for different pics. Looking for 'typical' Old West Mine Entries. This is what comes out:

Day 4: Build a new Dice Tower. Because you can never have enough Dice Towers hidden in your Terrain Features! With the experiences I gained building the church's Dice Tower it has been quite easy this time. (Well I really don't know if I have mentioned it earlier but the tower of the church is in fact a hidden Dice tower, you can remove the roof and the fountain to roll your dice).
When the Mine is finished you will not see the hidden Dice Tower at first hand, but I don't know exactly how it will be hidden.

Day 5: Adding a pair of rails for an upcoming mining cart.

Day 6: Adding more Details. As well as a second Railway. The first idea was to use a mining-cart preventing the dice roll to far away. Now I'm going to use the mining cart as a side-barricade, preventing the dice roll off from that side. The most important reason for this change is that the dice roll very well on the surface and I would not let them come to stop too early.

Tomorrow there will be more!

Greetings ;)

A mine is something that I always intended to do for my own Old West project but that will have to wait for some time for two reasons: Firstly,  I have not got the time to do it properly at the moment and secondly, space.
Where would I store the bloody thing as it will be mahoosive when I finally get around to it...?

I shall watch the progress on your mine with some jealousy.

Space. A final frontier...   :D
I know exactly what you mean. I'm getting space-problems, too. That is one of the main reasons why I decided to make just a small Mine Entry instead of a whole Mine with lots of tunnels and carts and so on.

Day 7: Adding more Details. I was working on the platform leading to the top of the cliff. Additionally I added a lot of things that should hinder the dice rolling off the Scene. I try to place those 'barricades' as realistic as possible (it should not just look as if they were placed in order to hold off dice  ::))

I am very sorry that my last update is from November (had quite a bit Real Life Stuff to do). I am constantly working on that mine (lots of small steps were done since my last Update). Unfortunately I have no pics on my mobil device but I promise that there will be a huge Update in early 2016!

There has been a Reaper Set containing different wizard's Equipment. Two of which has been books (a Necronomicon and the one I used as the big Bible). I'm still looking for the name of the Set!
The smaller Books I made by using a sheet of thick paper and duct tape for the spine. This method comes in handy if you are doing a whole bunch of books (i.e. for Bookshelfs). Using colored duct tape you even don't need additional painting.
To paint the lines for open bookpages I use a weathered mix of 1:2 water/black to make fine pinstripes

The Miners Camp set from Frontline Wargaming is more in scale being from their 25/28mm range.
I have it (twice) for when I get around to doing this scene and it is pretty good.

http://www.frontlinewargaming.co.uk/

Just select 25/28mm ranges and scroll down.
There is no picture, I am afraid, but take a look at their other stuff to see the quality of the stuff that they produce.

Here is a picture of some of their stuff that I used for tarting up my Hardware Store...

The 'piles' of goods are from Ainsty and the tools and lamps were from Tiger Miniatures, I think...

Whats next?
I still have a lot to work to do on that Mine and the next Gang's still waiting to be painted (speaking of the magnificent 7 here). Additionally I'm constantly working on a home made expansion rule set for Dead Mans Hand, adding Field Guns, Status Effects, Stampedes and a whole bunch of legendary Western Heroes&Villains and casual Rogues to the game.

Greetings

The mine looks great!
I love the idea of the removable 'hole' to reveal the real 'hole'.
 :-*

Nice collection too.
My favourite is the fella with the door.
Genius!

Love the Lady in Red in the center of the last page.  Manufacture?

She is from one of the Reaper Townsfolk packs, primarily aimed at fantasy settings but she works well for Old West too.
I think she comes with a smith and an old hermit type who should both be passable too.
I have all three in my town.

Even better, they are now in the Bones range for those looking for cheap civilian options.
 ;)

That IS a nice collection indeed. And indeed love the guy with the door. Might steal that idea.

Cheers

The guy with the door is pretty special but there are loads of nice figures in here, like the bandits with the polkadot bandanas and the Doc in the red jacket, a pleasure to check these out again. :)

I'm glad you started posting again as otherwise I would have missed this excellent thread. I really like your terrain and how you have finished the buildings, especially with the added details like planting and pots.

Thank You very much  :)

I hope to find more time for the hobby during the next months. I'm planning a lot of Detail Additions for my current Buildings. And maybe i find the time to start the Railroad Project that is planned for a long time.

I just finished the Greenstuff Work on my first Vampire for Dracula' America. I really like the model. But the original feels a little bit too skimpy for the old west, so I cut away the 'fleshy' parts and replaced them with Clothes.

Much lovely work here, Andy. Your vampire is looking great - if she hops behind the wheels of that armoured carrier she will be a force to reckon with!

I don't stop looking at the burning wagon!  :o
I think you've managed a very realistic depiction of fire and you did it in an instructive way!
Cheers!

Unfortunately the armoured carrier is too small for her.  :D

Thank You. It was a lot of work and testing and repainting necessary to achieve this result. Sadly I can't reemember how i did it. that's why my curent atempts to create fire effects look a little bit 'creepy'  :-X

I finished some new models.
