Title: My Peninsular British troops (Edit 10/08/17)
Post by: Jabba on August 01, 2015, 03:38:25 PM
My Peninsular British so far.
Started in February this year. A mixture of Perry plastics, Victrix plastic and resin, Warlord plastic and metal, Elite mounted officers and Front Rank mounted officers, Sgts and drummers . Lots more in the "to do" pile including more Victrix Artillery and Perry Light Dragoons.

Beautiful work, Jabba, very impressive indeed!

I'm (Slowly) working on some Perry Peninsular Brits myself, but for some reason it takes me 3 or 4 times as long to paint a 28mm Nap infantyman than it does to paint his AWI/ FIW cousin or a mediaeval equivilant... ???

If they turn out have as impressive as this I'll be chuffed. Keep it up!

Your Brits look pretty good too, different technique to me by the looks of it. I just prime, paint the base colour, no highlights or shadows, then brush on Vallejo Sepia Dipping Formula Wash finally brush varnish with Vallejo matt acrylic polyurethane varnish.
My theory for not painting regimental numbers of the figures is that if I want a different unit with the same facing colour I only need to do a new command stand. Doesn't work if I need two battalions with the same colour but a nice theory none the less.

Great work; these pics combined with the release of the new Perry Peninsular Brits I can feel my resolve to resist dissolving!!  :D

Lovely stuff, and I especially like the way you have mixed in the different manufacturers and poses to provide variety within each unit, while maintaining a uniformity of purpose.

Ah the old Peninsula War, and 2x Irish battalions - one of which took a French eagle at Barrosa, excellent. I like your mix of figures ,very effective. What rules are you using ? Enjoyed the website too btw, and look forward to you posting more.

The club uses Shako 2 for it's Napoleonics, hence the basing style and number of figures per unit. Myself and another newish player are starting to use Black Powder for the Peninsular War stuff but stuck with the Shako 2 basing so all the other club member's figures could be utilised.
Glad you liked the pics and club page.

looking good Jabba, nice and clean - I also still have these half done on my table.

However, to my taste the faces could do with some (a little) shading or a wash to bring out the expressions somewhat.
Plus they were out in that Spanish sun :)

Do apply a wash, sometimes seems too heavy and then look close up later and as you say not enough. The eyes on the left ADC didn't look that "startled" until I saw the close up photo

Superb paintwork,,,well done.
Sorry to be picky but the figure listed as a brigadier is a senior officer (major, LCol or colonel).

@IronDuke596 with reference to the Brigadier, I was thinking of the command position rather than the rank. During the early engagements in the Peninsular brigades were sometimes commanded by colonels for example the 2nd Brigades of the 3rd and 4th Divisions at Talavera.

Understood. The same situations applied in the War of 1812 (my period) where Lieutenant-Colonels were often Brigade commanders.

Again, my compliments on your well painted figures done in in a respectable time. I know how painstaking it can be to paint British Line Infantry.

Romark, gustav and IronDuke596 thanks for the encouraging comments. IronDuke596, War of 1812 is something I was only "vaguely" aware of until recently, may have to look into further in the future.

Well if you decide to get more involved and wish some advice on getting started I would be happy to help.
It is a great period to research, collect, paint and war-game....and such a variety of uniforms. Most of the battles are divisional size and below and will therefore fit most tabletops.
Cheers,
Rod

After a couple of comments on other forums about whether I had a blog with extra pictures etc I have decided to give it a go. Not a great deal of content as of yet as I am still new to the software and am trying to retrospectively cover the two and a bit years I have been actively wargaming.

Anyway here it is http://jabbaswargaming.blogspot.co.uk/ (http://jabbaswargaming.blogspot.co.uk/)

Very nice work! You have created quite the army here!
Our group plays Shako 2 as well, we quite like them as a rule set. We can play a large 8 to 10 division game in and evening.

First of all congrats for your growing army, you put a giant effort and the result is superb!  :-*
Keep'em comning!
Then, I'd like to comment the casualty counters:
I've seen many extremely well-painted armies playing on the best of terrains and the overall visual effect to be ruined by hastily prepared markers...
So, you must be given one more credit for this point, for your markers are well done!
Bravo and bravo again!

Thankfully the club I joined prides itself on the look as well as the fun and friendly nature of it's games and this rubs off.
