I've reclaimed my old 7th Cavalry from my friend Mark who'd bought them off me a few years ago. I'm going to choose the ones I want to keep and rebase them for a new Plains War project (starting Monday) and get rid of the rest. There are too many to use on the space I've got and far too many to paint opposition for (which is why the original project stalled in 1998).
In the meantime, here are some photos of them in all their (dusty) glory. 12 companies mounted and on foot based for Principles of War with horse holders, shaken markers and dead horses for improvised barricades if things turn nasty (what are the chances?). Also included is a company of scouts, baggage train and the artillery and Gatling guns that Custer left behind.
All the miniatures (except G.A.'s dog) are from Britannia Miniatures.

Love the old Britannia range. I had a fair size collection back in the day. I think I might have even bought several from your shop. :)
-
Impressive collection Paul

Nice

Awesome! This is what I'll call Cavalry 8)

I've re based all the miniatures I'm going to use for my project. No photos because the forum just hangs when I try to post with photo links these days. Eventually it'll post several copies of the message if past performance is anything to go on. Edit Yep, three copies appeared below :)
Anyway, for those who can be bothered:

Nice looking project Paul, a long time in the making :D
later I hope to expand into more of a general wild west feel with Apaches, Mexicans and a wagon train. What I don't want at this stage is a wild west town and gunfighters however and I plan to steer clear of this.
We are of like mind - I have an Old West 'Apache' project on the go that is focussing on badlands and settlers rather than townships and gunmen.
-
I'm going to make a High Chaparral ranch :)

I'm going to make a High Chaparral ranch :)
Happy childhood memories! :)
-
Monalito (sorry if spelled wrong) when two other characters had done the 'pick up a rock, throw it up in the air shoot & hit it' thing. They both looked at him (expecting him to also show his skill) he looked around at the thousands of rocks and said,' I too would do this, but you have used all the good rocks'.
Great memories.

I absolutely love those figures - some people think they are too 'old school', but I absolutely love them. I use them as Norwegians in my VSF. How do you plan on getting rid of the extras?
-
Originally I was going to sell the extra miniatures but I've decided to store them for the moment in case I find a need for them in the future.
-
The new bases look great!
The Fighting Scenes are fantastic! :o What colours did you use for the indian skin?
Cheers! :)
-
I,ll be watching this thread with great interest as I,m currently , slowly , painting Apaches and Horse Soldiers ( shades of the John Ford trilogy ) . Love the painting and the bluffs behind them btw.
-
I used Humbrol colours at the time. I don't remember which, I painted these in 1995/96.
-
Those figures look great! What rules are you going to use?
Jim
-
They look great with their shiny new bases.
:-* :-*
Did you have to do many 'touch-ups' to the old paint jobs after all this time?

Having done the town (mostly, still have a couple of buildings to add......) I too shall be heading into the wilds when I come back to the Old West in future.
Not for a while, though....
I look forward to seeing what you both do so that I can steal all your good ideas.
:D

I'll be adapting some I wrote a long time ago for the Plains War.
Did you have to do many 'touch-ups' to the old paint jobs after all this time?
No, none except where I scraped the paint off a horse's tail when I was cutting the old base away. Oh, and I changed the flags and flag poles.
-
Cool love the new bases :)
Mark
-
Nice work on the update to the minis, they look great :)

Well, shucks. These old beauties are not so easy to get anymore. And your paint is superb as always.

Right, summer's rolled around again so I've been adding to this project.
Teepees and Custer's guidon.
Teepees are new from Acheson Creations, guidon holder is a rebase from my original set.
Artillery. Just too nice not to use so they got rebased too.
And, since I'm painting Apaches at the moment, Buffalo soldiers who are rebased originals with repainted faces. Some scouts have been rebased too and now include my Apache scouts.

Cacti from Woodland Scenics. More of them later as I have more on order. I'll do a group shot once they're all complete.
Project update:
The Plains Indians are off to Andy Mac for painting as soon as I get a missing one replaced, should be this week. I'm going to start on the plains indians civilians very soon.
I am currently painting Apaches. I've nearly completed the ones on foot and their mounted versions should arrive soon so I'll be painting them too.
I have painted most (all except 3) of my Mexican Banditos on foot. Their mounted versions will also be here soon and I'll be painting them as well.
The wagons for the wagon train and the cowboys and settlers are also inbound. They'll all be painted by me.
I'm looking at a train too.
-
Looking good, sir.
Most excellent.
:-* :-*
I did not know the WS did cacti, so thanks for the tip-off.
I shall have to check them out.
:)

Matakishi - lovely stuff, the repaints and rebasing makes them so much more Old West and less ACW...but the photos are a little small and I may be wrong (and hope I am) they all seem to be wearing yellow neckerchiefs?
-
There are bigger photos in my G+ album

Of course they're all wearing yellow neckerchiefs, they're toy soldiers.
the Confederates are wearing blue :)
-
Oh dear - I am at a loss for words... I love Hollywood and John Ford but draw the line at itsy bitsy tiny weenie yellow matching neckerchiefs! ;)
-
Everything looks great, I particularly like the artillery. As you say
Just too nice not to use
Looking forward to seeing your Apaches.

Guys,
I just bought some of those cacti after seeing matakishi's photos, but they are a bit cheaper (£2 less) on Amazon at the moment:
Woodland Scenics Plastic Cactus Plants 0.5-inch to 2.5-inch (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Woodland-Scenics-Plastic-0-5-inch-2-5-inch/dp/B005SN5VTY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1471449918&sr=8-1&keywords=Woodland+Scenics+Plastic+Cactus+Plants+0.5-inch+to+2.5-inch)

An Indian burial scaffold (included as a freebie by Britannia Miniatures). It will be used as blocking terrain fro the Indians, they won't be able to go near it but the Cavalry can happily rampage through.

Lovely stuff and giving me pangs of guilt as my Old West idles while I pander to my AWI collections.
However, last week I attended an event near where I live where I got to see real live cavalry in action on horseback in drill and in camp, talked to a couple of them, too. And down the road a bit were a few buffalo soldiers who were quite happy to talk to someone who knew some of their history. One of those gentleman's grandfathers served in one of the regiments - I think he said 10th but not sure. And there was a piece of period ordinance (actually earlier but would have been used in period) being shot off. And there were even native Americans doing dances to honor veterans. And there was even a steam locomotive pulling a train for the tourists.
Yes, I have photos and videos but, alas, they are on my mini iPad which I haven't hooked up to email yet. Maybe someday I'll be able to post it up.
Really need to work more on the Old West - made progress this year but there is so much to do and not enough time to work on it. Real life keeps getting in the way.
But, again, enjoying watching this collection transform.
-
That sounds like a great day out. I'd certainly like to see the photos if you ever post them.
