Title: Count Dragos and his lackeys (April 8: Dragos' final adventure...)
Post by: Malebolgia on August 12, 2015, 09:11:41 PM
Another Frostgrave convert! Me and my mates bought the books and I ordered two sets of the excellent cards made by audrey. Friday is our first evening of Frostgrave and we're all looking forwards to it.
I decided to play a Necromancer for a wizard...I just remembered I had an ace Ridolfi sculpt in my collection which was perfect for the game. So I quickly painted him up (about 3 hours work, so I'm quite happy) and my first and most important member of the warband is done!

Count Dragos - Necromancer
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/countdragos.jpg)
(the snow is crushed glass by Scenery Workshop...love that stuff)

And I had painted his puppy some years back for Warmachine (as a War Dog), and he is just perfect for the warband.

Count Dragos and Putin
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/countdragos_putin.jpg)
The little pup is an aggressive, arrogant and megalomaniac warhound...perfect for Dragos!

Next up is the Templar, which is about finished...just needs some snow...

Really great start. Is that vampire a Reaper mini? He looks great, and I find myself thinking up a use for one. :P

Cheers lads!
@affun: yes, it's one from Reaper:

Reaper have so many cool Vampires. Heck, I think you can do a Vampire warband if you want :)

**edit**
And apparently it is a Garrety sculpt! When it comes down to undead, I always think of Bob Ridolfi. But cool she did them too :)

Time for an update! I've finished a new miniature and some scenery.

Apprentice Necromancer
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/necromancer2.jpg)
An ancient Citadel wizard and I really like him. A bit of an odd sculpt, but with loads of character. I went with greenish tones and added P3 Coal Black to almost every color to tie him in with his master and to make all colors a bit cooler in tone.

Wight King (Templar)
I finished this one two years ago for a Delves campaign, but figured he was excellent for Frostgrave as a Templar. So I added snow and added some highlights to the bone. The miniature was an experiment in fast and efficient painting: he was colored in base colors, dipped with a home made dip and then received some fast highlights. About two hours work, but I was real happy.

Warband
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/warband.jpg)
Here's the whole warband, so the Wizard, Apprentice, Templar, Warhound and the zombie I use when I raise one from the dead. He was painted in a similar way as the Templar.

Scenery - Fountain (Fenris Games)
Excellent model, which was sculpted by LAF's Redshadows IIRC. A blast to paint! I didn't know what to do with the top, so decided to turn it into a big flower pot :D

Scenery - Statue (Fenris Games)
The statue itself is also by Redshadows...the plinth is a resin plinth by Fenris and the base is a 60mm AT-43 base. Supereasy paintjob and the weathering is done with Modelmates weathering liquids. Supereasy to use and fast!

Well - Tabletop World
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/well.jpg)
Man oh man...what a FANTASTIC cast and model. So much detail and everything is crisp. Lots of character and an excellent addition to my village.

Altar of Cthulhu - Fenris Games
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/altar.jpg)
A must-have for every Cthulhu fan and a great objective piece for many games. I didn't know what to do with the sigil...but blood always works well when it comes down to Cthulhu ;)

Evil standing stones - Fenris Games
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/bloody_stones.jpg)
Nice small additions to the gaming table. I wanted to emphasize the engravings, so I made them bloody. Fast, effective and they pop well on the table.

Evil graves - Fenris Games
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/evilgraves.jpg)
Nice and simple additions to the graveyard and they fit in well with my Cthulhu scenery.

So done for now. Next up will be some soldiers...but first back to Cyberpunk...

The basing on the evil graves is incredible! The flowers are a brilliant touch.

I also like the simple and effective cultists. But star of the show has got to be your Count Ridolfi and the necromancer. Beautiful painting there.

Thanks a lot for the praise guys, much appreciated.
And yes, Tabletop World has the best resin stuff. Although the well I use isn't available anymore, the new one is terrific too:

That has been AGES...but me and my mate are getting back into Frostgrave. So time to add some more stuff. The Captains inspired me to do a Captain in style and I also had an old Heartbreaker mini which I really wanted to paint...

Necromancer Captain
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/frostgrave_captain.jpg)
One of the old awesome Rackham undead skeletons. Way over the top and silly, but I just love his pose and helmet. It oozes oldskool character and I think he is perfect as a Captain.
I painted him real fast, I think the main painting was done during one episode of The Walking Dead. I basecoated all the parts, then washed the crap out of him. Gloss varnished and matt varnished and then took the pigments and weathering liquids to make him old, gnarly and add character and contrast. Finally a snowy base and done!

Infantryman
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/infantryman.jpg)
I used to own this model about twenty years ago and I also painted him back in the day. But then after some years I stripped a lot of my stuff (I'm still sad I did that...cherish your old paintjobs!). But I bought him again here at LAF and saw him as a perfect Infantryman. He was painted in another The Walking Dead episode. First basecoated him with Tin Bitz, washed him and then added very bright highlights to simulate dark metal armour. Added the details and painted the weapon and varnished him. Out come the weathering stuff and boom...he is old and rusty! Also a nice one to do. A simple sculpt but still loads of character.

I quite like the finish on the metals, I can't get mine looking as natural as yours. How do you do it?

It's not really rocket science, so quite easy to do actually :)

The silver:
*Basecoat Citadel Mithril Silver
*Wash with Citadel Badab Black Wash
*Wash with Citadel Devlan Mud
*Polearm: Apply dark shading by stippling on P3 Armor Wash (this is a dark and quite opaque wash)
-Apply gloss and matt varnish-
*Use dry pigments and brush them on with a small dry brush
*I start with old rust, then medium and finally light rust. Sometimes I add some water to make it more easy.
*Fix the pigments
*For the green verdigris I use Modelmates weathering liquid. I simply apply it with a brush and then apply matt varnish.
*Apply some extreme highlights with Vallejo Model Color Metal Medium.

That's it really!

The fire's still strong...so I painted another one, the archer.
Actually, it is a Warmachine Khador Kossite Woodsman. I wanted him to fit in with my Khador, so that determined by colour scheme. But I think he fits in well with the rest. And a Cossack seemed like a right choice for a Vampire to me!
Painting was straight forward. Once again I first applied all basecoats, then applied all shading and finally all highlights. I have the idea this speeds it all up and once you get past stage 1 the fun really starts :)

And another update...the final two members of my warband!

Tunnel Fighter
As soon as I read hte Breeding Pits I knew I wanted a Tunnel Fighter, just love the idea. When I was scrounging through my miniatures I found the old Wyrd Malifaux Resurrectionists Grave Spirit and I thought he would be perfect as a tunnel fighter. A strange old spirit coming from the rocks with a miners helm and a big mallet. I only added the right arm so he had two hand weapons. Easy conversion.
For painting I painted him green to make him like a spirit (also matching the colours I have for Malifaux), the rest was easily done.

Warhound
I used a silly warhound, but I wanted something that fit a Necromancer a lot better. So once again, Malifaux comes to the rescue! I painted a Canine Remains in about 30 minutes or so. Absurd how fast he went. I basecoated him with P3 Trollblood Highlight (awesome colour) and just glazed him a lot with P3 Coal Black (also awesome), P3 Sanguine Base (once again awesome), some greens and browns until I liked him the way he was. Then I highlighted him with thinned Foundry Moss C and finally with some light grey. His eyes were done with P3 Red Ink and I then added a yellow glow. The mouth was washed with P3 Red Ink, the nails and inside of the ears with black wash, the teeth were painted with bone and finally the nose was painted black with a light highlight of grey. Half an hour's work, so I was quite happy!
After varnishing I added some Tamiya Clear Red blood to him, to zombify him a bit. I also did his mouth as if he just had a great lunch.

And that finishes the initial warband! Here's a picture of the group:

Tomorrow me and my mate will be doing the Dark Alchemy campaign with two warbands and I'm very happy I finished the warband and can play fully painted. Yeah!

Title: Re: Count Dragos and his lackeys (update Aug. 4: Tunnel Fighter & Warhound)
Post by: Malebolgia on August 04, 2016, 09:46:16 AM
Thanks!
1. Base them with sand (fine and course mixed)
2. Paint it with Vallejo Model Colour Chocolate Brown
3. Drybrush it with Vallejo Game Color Leather Brown (Citadel Snakebite Leather)
4. Drybrush it with Foundry Bone B (Citadel Bleached Bone)
5. After varnishing I glue some dried grass tufts to them, from Mininatur (with superglue!)
6. I then add some patches of superglue and dip the model in fine modelling turf
7. I mix Scenery Workshop snow (crushed glass) with Vallejo Still Water and apply this to the bases with an old brush
8. When the snow mix is still wet, I add a layer of pure crushed glass to it for a powdery finish
9. Paint the base rim with Vallejo Model Color Black

Done!

And another update! Now with the Dark Alchemy campaign done, I have some gold crowns to spend on reinforcements. Hooray, more opportunities for new paintjobs! I decided to get a Barbarian, Treasure Hunter and Crossbowman (and probably a Thief too). I finished the Barbarian...the ghoul Xor! A fantastic Heresy sculpt and perfect as a Barbarian in my warband with his big shovel. Painting went superfast as I used a similar pallete as with the Canine Remains.

Next up will be the Treasure Hunter which is about 80% finished now.

And another update...the Treasure Hunter!

A terrific West Wind sculpt and I think he's perfect for a Transylvanian themed warband. He's my Treasure Hunter, because he carries a sword and dagger, so perfect. I went for blue and this was a bit of a gamble as blue sure is one of my weak colours. But it worked out very well and I am happy with him!

Only the Crossbowman left...
Title: Re: Count Dragos and his lackeys (update Aug. 24: Treasure Hunter)
Post by: Malebolgia on September 02, 2016, 01:36:28 PM
Okay, next update then.

Crossbowman
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/xbow.jpg)

Bear
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/bear.jpg)

The Crossbowman (Warmachine Khador Kossite Woodsman) was fun to do, although he has a lot of fiddly details. But still he went fast and he fits in with the Archer. The Bear was a big chunk of metal from Reaper and was done within the hour. Nice and simple with the black. To tie him in with the rest of the warband I used P3 Coal Black and P3 Trollblood Highlight for the fur to get that cold blue and earthly colour too. Hopefully the bear will see action tonight as a familiar!

And with these the warband is done! Here are all of them:

You can see they are standing on a snowy ground with some new scenery...because I also finished my snowy ruined city!! Here are the shots:

So that finishes the project...for now...
Title: Re: Count Dragos and his lackeys (update Sept.2: Xbow, Bear, snow table!)
Post by: Malebolgia on September 04, 2016, 07:38:44 PM
No interest in the last two updates I see. Okay.

But the fun continues! We played the first scenario from The Thaw of The Lich Lord last Friday...on my new snow table. With my fully painted warband. That felt great.

The game went very well too. My new bear managed to first ravage a War Hound and then eat a Barbarian, before making off. The new Crossbow was the man of the game...near the end of the game he managed to roll a 20 against my mate's Treasure Hunter who carried a treasure. The Treasure Hunter was gone...and after the game it turned out he was dead! A Walking Dead moment:

The Crossbowman then carried off the treasure, giving me 4 of them. My wounded archer also was a real beast, slaying the opposing archer and Captain. Only my Warhound and Barbarian went down (the Barbarian was one-shotted by a Bone Dart, really cool) but both suffered no harm.

I secured 6 (!) potions, 160 gold, a Grimoire and a Vial of Stardust (which is laughable, since my wizard is a Vampire) and a Grimoire of a spell I already knew. My wizard gained 4 levels (level 12 now). So a good start of the new campaign. I sold the Grimoire, bought a Kennel and a Templar. My wizard is ready to brave the ice in scenario 2...

Your warband looks ace, though my obsessive side keeps noticing that the bases aren't all the same type. But seeing the tremendous paintjob and detailing of the bases that's a tiny issue.

@Reed: I totally agree with your observation, that my main gripe too. But since they will be used in other games too (Pulp, Warmachine, Malifaux), I am kind of "stuck" to these bases.

A week ago we played the second installment of the 'Thaw of the Lich Lord' campaign...and once again it was a blast!!

At first the scenario seemed a bit lame with only the running apprentice going on...but the ice was a real game changer! In a good way. It made moving a lot more tricky and you wouldn't know whether your intended charge (with a buddy supporting) would actually work! So it quickly became quite interesting. But my Apprentice managed to Bone Dart an archer to death and my archer and crossbowman managed to cripple both the Thief and Treasure Hunter. My mate was very happy with Leap, so he could quickly leap them away to safety. So by then I had a big numerical advantage...until 4 Cultists showed up next to me! The Death Cultists came on my left flank and I sent in my Infantryman and Tunnel Fighter. They were butchered by the madmen...butchered! So my Archer, Treasure Hunter and Warhound also had to support to get rid of them. That was 5 man changing blows with these evil men...were they secretly hired by my Elf arch-enemy?? So the game then became more balanced. The Apprentice stormed from his hideout and tried to escape, but was set upon by the Elf Captain, Warhound and finally my Treasure Hunter. My Treasure Hunter stabbed him in the back and stole the XP. Ghehehe.

And then a big melee in the centre happened. My Bear, Treasure Hunter, Barbarian, Warhound, Captain all were in a massive combat with his Captain, Warhound, Templar and Barbarian. But my opponent got real sneaky and Decayed the Archer's bow, Captains 2-hander (noooo!) and Ghoul Barbarian 2-hander (noooo!). Damn, Decay is NASTY. But my soldiers managed to take down his force. I lost my Bear, Barbarian and Captain and he lost all of his soldiers. But his Captain managed to slay several of them. In the end he went down surrounded by 4 enemies! A heroic stand. My Vampire Wizard mainly harrassed his forces by summoning Imp after Imp close to his force.
My Crossbowman once again was the man of the match by shooting and taking down his wizard! Crossbow 2, Elves 0. That's what you get for hiding in the back! Pewpew! I secured the treasure and ended up with 3 vs 2 treasures. Once again a win for the Vampire!

After the game the Tunnel Fighter and Infantryman were both badly wounded, the Bear was killed off (by the Elf Barbarian...who now has a new fur cloak). My Captain's arm was smashed (-1 Fight). My opponent's Captain was killed! What a shame, he was a real hero in our five games killing many opponents. But getting hacked to pieces by four opponents was even too much for him. His Warhounds also were killed. And I believe 1 archer was badly hurt. His wizard was fine!

Treasure time...I found a Club of Battering! What a cool weapon for my Captain! With the extra bonus he can't be affected by Decay. Yes...I also found four potions, a lot of gold and...the Grimoire of Lichdom! How fitting the Apprentice apparently was carrying the Liche's personal weapon and diary! But now they are MINE!
My wizard gained 4 levels (16 now), upgraded his Fight and Fleet Feet and Push spells and learned the Miraculous Cure spell. He then cast it ouf of game to heal the Captain's smashed arm...but I rolled an 8 (needed an 18). I used all 10 shots of the Vial of Starlight and the Captain was healed again. Rehired the Infantryman and we'll see what creature might join us next time instead of the bear...

Friday game 3 and hopefully also game 4!

 :-* :-*

I also noticed the bases, and whilst not being a fan of slottas in general*, the paintwork does a magnificent job of bringing everything together. The brushwork is exquisite.

I second the call on Geboom's stuff.
I have a few of the boats and they are great!

*Not having a dig as I still use slottas on my 40K stuff as they blend in with everyone else' figures, so I fully understand why you have gone down that route.

Thanks man! That is high praise coming from a masterbuilder like you 8)

**EDIT**

New update!

Ghoul pack!
Some of the important type of creatures in the 'Thaw of the Lich Lord' campaign are the Ghouls! They are involves in several scenarios and might turn up as wandering creatures. For our next scenario I needed 4 Ghouls...I had a total of 6, so I decided to paint them all together. This way I was also ready for 'Lair of the Ghoul King'. The female Ghoul will be the Ghoul Queen...with her grizzly trophy...
Fantastic to paint and very easy to do. Paul Muller's sculpting style is so nice, you can use all kinds of techniques together and it always works well. I kept the blood to a minimum and decided to keep the bases plain too, so they could be used for dungeon crawlers too.
It's one of the coolest things of this game...it made me paint these miniatures which I bought 10 years ago. Now they are finally done!

Those Heresy ghouls certainly are some of the best sculpts out there, and not dated a bit. Good job with them  :)

I agree, the Ghouls are wonderful sculpts (but then all Andy's monsters are). I have a bunch of them as Nochtlinger for Witchfinder games.

It will be interesting to see how Andy brings all his diverse monsters together for the Netherhalls game he is working on, going to a dungeon crawl in one of the weirdest, most disturbing settings ever..

Thanks guys, much appreciated.

And another update...it's going fast this week!

Worms
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/worms.jpg)
Two old plastic Mage Knight Thorn Crawlers. 13 years ago I had tons of Mage Knight...played the game a lot. But once the hype died I sold most or gave them away. But fortunately I still have a few, because the sculpts are often really cool and absolutely interesting for games like Frostgrave. The paintjobs were fast with lots of drybrushing and washing. Love these sculpts!

Ice Toad
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/icetoad.jpg)
I received these two weeks ago in a trade with Daeothar and I knew I had to paint him fast. It is just such a silly sculpt, I love that. An angry toad in a snowy city, what's not to like. Hopefully he can replace my Bear next Saturday!

Frostgrave treasures
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/treasures1.jpg)
Also from the trade with Daeothar, easy to do and lovely casts.

And also stuff I finished two weeks ago, but photgraphed yesterday:

Skull Piles 1
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/skullpiles1.jpg)

Skulls for the skull of...the Lich Lord! FANTASTIC casts from Iain from Toad King Castings. These were real fun to paint and supereasy too (white primer, two thick brown washes, three drybrushes, a wash on the wood...done!). Awesome for Frostgrave or dungeon crawlers.

Treasures
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/treasures2.jpg)
6 treasures from Fenris Games. Excellent for the game and nice casts as always. Decided to give them all different colours to make them unique.

We played the third Thaw of the Lich Lord campaign game yesterday: The Corpse Cart!

The Corpse Cart was stranded in the centre of the table and our warbands were both going for it...it seemed like an ideal oppertunity to ambush the Lich Lord's minions! My Necromancer managed to summon a mighty Icetoad (ribbit) and my trusty Zombie shambled along. In the first turn my sneaky move worked: my Apprentice group activated (with the zombie, archer and crossbowman). The zombie moved in front of him and I Pushed him 10" forwards...straight into the treasure! He picked it up...and 3 Armoured Skeletons arrived. Oh dear...

My Crossbowman lived up to his reputation by rolling a 20 when firing at the first Cultist!
Our warbands moved all up towards the corpse cart and my Captain drank his Potion of Toughness. My Barbarian ran forwards to attract 1 Armoured Skeleton. Then the Armoured Skeletons activated. The first advanced into the Zombie and was crushed by my undead minion right away! Yeah! The second caused 1 wound on my zombie...and the third moved into my Barbarian, as planned.
In turn 2 the centre became chaotic! With Cultists, Elves and Necromantic minions duking it out. It was madness. We decided anyone in base contact could pick up treasures, even if enemies were within 1" of the treasures. Otherwise this would become a mosh pit until one was left standing. That didn't sound very cool...

My Treasure Hunter quickly snagged up a cool treasure and ran away, while my Captain and Ice Toad went for the Cultists. My mate's meat grinder went for the Cultists, but he wasn't very lucky. His freshly painted Barbarian got a sound beating and the cultists remained standing. My Barbarian managed to slay the first Armoured Skeleton next to him and then ran into combat with the second.
More and more soldiers piled in and now were also going for each other in an attempt to get the most treasures. It became even more chaotic:

I managed to destroy the Armoured Skeletons...but then in my read 3 new ones appeared! Argh! They were right by my Apprentice and Crossbowman. In the centre my Templar's blade was destroyed by the mage (I...hate...Decay...), his Warhounds were crushed, my Ice Toad was cut in twain by the Barbarian, my Warhound was killed by the Treasure Hunter, his Captain was reduced to 1 wound by the Cultist and a Bone Dart casting Apprentice...the Cultists all went down, but now Ghouls appeared (from the scenario!) They ran right into my Archer and Barbarian. Argh!

The Armoured Skeletons in my back proved to be a big problem. The first one was killed by my Crossbowman, but the second took down my Crossbowman. Next one went for my Wizard and another for my Apprentice. The Apprentice failed at controlling him and was cut down.
My Barbarian killed one Ghoul and my Captain and Infantryman crunched the next one down. The Barbarian also killed the third and I think the fourth was slain by the sneaky Elf arhcer, hiding in a tower. But to make matters worse...a Banshee also appeared! And what a terror she was!! She floated all over the table and shouted my Archer down, hurt my Captain and Treasure Hunter...terrible. My mate managed to kill more and more of my troops...I was losing Soldiers fast now.
My Captain dragged back the second treasure while my Wizard controlled the last Armoured Skeleton. All of our forces now quickly retreated as were afraid of the Banshee. My Captain was within her Wail range 4 times!! He failed the first roll, made the second, failed the third...leaving him at 1HP! With his final strength he came to 1" of the table edge with the treasure and then was assailed by the Banshee again...he failed his Will roll and went down. So close, yet so far. My Wizard grabbed the treasure and ran away ending the game.

What a slaughter! I had killed so many of those annoying creatures: 2 Cultists, 3 Ghouls and 5 Armoured Skeletons. That's a warband by itself  lol. But I lost a lot of Soldiers, 7 of them. My mate had a good game and he chopped down several of my men. So although we both ended up with 3 treasures he sure had the moral victory.
In the end my Apprentice and 7 of my Soldiers went down. But I was lucky with my injury rolls and only the Ice Toad missed the next game.

My wizard gained 4 levels (+1 Fight, +1HP, -1 Fleet Feet, -1 Control Undead) For treasures I found a Grimoire of Fast Act, Magical Spectacles and a Belt of Animal Repelance (oh, and a lot of gold). I sold the Spectacles, stored the Grimoire and upgraded my Base some more (with a Weapon's Rack and a cool big telescope). My wizard managed to raise another zombie for the next game and a new animal companion was summoned. Next up will be a nasty scenario with 6 Armoured Skeletons, magical lightning...and in general a lot of fun!!

Certainly was another great game! The scenarios from the Liche King really have a nice individual twist to them.

The cultists being so close to their destination was a nice touch, especially when the armoured skeletons came out of the gate in the first turn! The amount of neutral creatures was really high, we've never encountered that much in all the games before. The Banshee is horrible, with her random move and wail, just like she should be. I thought of casting slow on her, but deciced not to take the risk as my mage was 1 point removed from being wounded and the game was in the closing stage. For me the game went quite well, beter than the ones before. No dead and only one soldier missing the next game, and three treasures.

The treasures turned out to be a grimoire (of fast act) and gold, a load more gold and a ring of life. Nice! I decided to buy a kennel to free up a slot for another soldier and am thinking of getting a knight, ranger or tracker. My mage gained another 4 levels after the game. He's now level 21. He read the grimoire (not really a choice :)), got +1 health and -1 to decay and to leap if I recall correctly.

Really looking forward to the next game!

Update! Lots of creatures

Well, I had a creatures painting spree the last three days. Went mad with my brush and now we have a lot more options during games.

Ice Growler (Boar)
I wanted to have a Boar...but didn't want a Boar model. So I scrounged through my collection and found two old resin Leviathan hellhounds. Ooooh! These would be cool as fantasy versions of Boars. I see them as big hairy creatures with a nasty temper. Don't mess with them...
Paintjob was rather straight forward and went really fast.

Wolves
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/wolves.jpg)
I got these in a recent trade with Daeothar. According to him they are board game pieces from a Game of Thrones game. Never saw them before, but I like them. The plastic is a bit like Zombicide or DOOM, and has good detail The one on the left as already painted by Daeothar, but I rebased him and gave him an extra drybrush (mainly to get rid of the shine). I didn't varnish them, just to be sure. I already have too many issues with tacky bendy plastic...

Amplipedes
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/amplipedes.jpg)
Ah, yes...the awesome slugs from Heresy Miniatures. Love these! I painted these around 10 years ago too, for Andy from Heresy (these ones: link (http://heresyminiatures.com/shop/images/large/monsters013.jpg)), so about time I painted my own! Went for bright and weird colours to make them stand out. Started with P3 Carnal Pink, drybrushed this by adding Ivory to it, washed with Magenta Ink, Purple Wash and Blue Wash and then a final highlight. Nice, simple and fast. And works well too. Finished the teeth and brown underside and done.

Skeletons
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/skeletons.jpg)
Once again very old models which have been in my stash for almost twenty years. Don't have a clue what manufacturer but they are nice sculpts. Main downside was that they were 6 identical sculpts. So I bent the sword arms a bit to get some variation. Very simple drybrushing with some washes and pigments to get them done.

Rats
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/rats.jpg)
Got these lovely Otherworld rats in a trade here at LAF several years ago. Decided to make them black rats to make them more menacing. Easy to do to.

Small Construct
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/small_construct.jpg)
Not really a construct, but a cool nice little model from the Revenant sprue from Mantic Games. Until I have a better construct (I think a Malifaux Arachnid) this one will do.

And one more skull pile as it turned out I had two more! Nice.

Tonight me and Raz will be playing the fourth scenario from the Lich Lord Campaign. And I have another update coming up, that involves creatures...in a different way. More tomorrow!

Title: Re: Count Dragos and his lackeys (update Oct. 20: Game 4 - Lich Lord!)
Post by: Malebolgia on October 20, 2016, 07:49:40 AM
So Last night we played the fourth scenario from ‘Thaw of the Lich Lord’: The Storm of Undeath. What an epic title…we expected a good game. And it was. For me at least ;)
Here’s a shot of the table:

You can see the 1” square area in the middle with one of the pillars in each corner. Although the scenario stated the square should be empty, we filled it up with pile of skulls and bones. Seemed fitting and some cover is always nice.
And then we started!
My warband advanced forwards, both spellcasters utterly failing to cast spells (I have a tendency to roll a 1 for my Wizard’s spells :D). Funny moment was when my zombie grabbed a treasure…which turned out to be trapped! He was hit by a wall of force and was flung over a building. He suffered damage and was actually closer to escaping the table. Hooray! :D

My Archer and Crossbowman advanced with my wizard in the centre and they peppered his Captain. It seemed a bit lame to shoot at him, standing in hard cover with the storm going on (he was at Fight +6 and I at shoot -2!). But my archer rolled a 20…bringing him down to 2hp. This was a massive mental blow for Raz; it was the second game in a row where the Captain was crippled before doing anything. And Raz was dreading my numerical superiority. But his Archer managed to hit my Archer for 5 damage..just shy of crippling him. Somehow, Raz always brings him down to 5HP ;).

In the two following turns my Crossbowman finished off the Captain, making the numerical difference even bigger. My wizard went for a Treasure and the Apprentice Fleet Feeted the Captain. His wizard first Decayed the Treasure Hunter and in the next turn did the same to the Templar’s blade…again (third game in a row now?). His Apprentice Fast Acted his Treasure Hunter. His Thief moved away with the treasure and my zombie did the same. I decided to rampage forwards with my warband and simply swamp the central area loaded with treasure. My Treasure Hunter *loved* his Belt of Animal Repelance as he kept a Warhound at bay for two turns. Good boy! My summoned Wolf was lucky, he ran into his archer to occupy him and was charged by his Warhound. The Wolf killed his Warhound and then brought the Archer down to 2 wounds! Good boy! His Treasure Hunter easily dispatched my Warhound…bad boy! His Warhound decided to stall my Templar and my Tunnel Fighter charged his Knight and got a nasty wound in return. His Treasure Hunter charged mine (who only had a dagger), but mine still won the combat and pushed his opponent away.
As we went into the third turn, my warband had advanced a lot. And I had a cool plan for the next turn…

His Treasure Hunter activated first and charged the Tunnel Fighter…and got 5 damage! As my zombie had shambled off, my Wizard summoned a new one. Mainly to keep any raised Armoured Skeletons at bay! The apprentice moved to the side. His wizard jumped on my Tunnel Fighter and hit him with Fight +7…that was too much and he brought the Tunnel Fighter down. My Infantryman ran into his Barbarian to make sure the furry Elf wouldn’t make off with the treasure. His Barbarian swung at me…and lost his head in the process! The Elf dropped the treasure. Then it was time for my cunning plan! My Captain activated Sprint and charged his Apprentice. With a whopping 9” charge I pummeled into him and the Captain hit the Apprentice with his Club of Battering like Negan will next Sunday in the Walking Dead. Awesome. My Treasure Hunter and Barbarian ran away with two treasures. His Knight charged my Infantryman and crippled my soldier. His Warhound had killed my Templar (rolled a 20!) and now could support his Knight. But my Wolf moved in to fight the Warhound. And then lightning struck…
6 Armoured Skeletons rose from the piles of bones!

As we moved towards the end game, things got crazy. My Infantryman managed to slay his hardy Knight (rolled a 19) and was killed by the Wizard in return. His Wizard also killed my Wolf. Was he really a High Elf, not a Dark Elf…? My Captain crushed his Warhound and then his Treasure Hunter. The Treasure Hunter rose as a Revenant and was crushed again by the Captain! Yes, my Captain was on fire. My Wizard moved back with the treasure and the Armoured Skeletons crushed my Zombie and Archer. My Crossbowman once again was a star, killing 2 Armoured Skeletons. And then my Captain killed 3 more…insane! As we called it a game I had gathered 4 treasures and Raz 2.

So a good game with some epic moments! My Captain had killed 6 models, including his Apprentice. My Infantryman (who was with me for 7 games) killed a Barbarian and then a Knight and got skewered by the Elf (turned out he was really dead). Awesome.

After the game it turned out my Wolf and Warhound would stay the next game at the love shack, missing out on the fun with the Rangifers. Like the Infantryman, the Templar was dead. I found 600 gold (!), a Vampire Blade, a Scroll of Planar Walk and a Scroll of Elemental Hammer. I sold the Scroll of Planar Walk and my Captain demanded a hefty 84 gold! But he deserved it.
My Wizard gained 5 levels and my Captain 1 too! I gave the Captain the trick that gave him a +4Will once per game. My Wizard bought a Grimoire of Fool’s Gold and read it. He also read the Grimoire of Lichdom (omnomnom), raised his health by +1, lowered Fleet Feet and Imp.

Since my Templar didn’t do a thing in all games and lost his weapon in three games I decided to buy a Knight. Maybe he performs better…especially since he now wields the Vampire Blade!
Next up will be ‘Run of the Rangifer’…a classic treasure hunt with 7 nasty creatures roaming the field. Oh boy…

And another addition to my Frostgrave collection are...creature cards! With creatures from three tables, I decided to make a card deck. Not only is deciding what creature appears a lot easier (flip a card), we now also have the creature's stats and you can track their wounds. I made this in Photoshop and InDesign, printed them, cut them and sleeved them. Turns out my printer's alignment is not perfect, but for a first print I'm happy.

The plan is to get the whole deck done before the next game. As of now, the deck has 35 creatures and more will be added...:)

 A great looking table set-up.

The skeletons are from the old Harlequin miniatures range and were sculpted by Roy Eastland.I think Northstar have them now.

Nice to see a Leviathan miniature in there too.A great range of miniatures and the art work in the book is top notch too.Got to love Adrian Smith.

That's fast, mate! Another good read, great for starting the workday combined with a cup of coffee :) What a game, luckily the treasure phase afterwards turned out to go better than the game itself. A few extreme dice early on can really make a game go a certain way, but my wizard managed to leave the field at least with some dignity by kicking some ass himself, taking out three opponents :) Looking back the game had it's frustrating moments, but all in all was another nice addition to the campaign. Having played four scenarios now (and three from Dark Alchemy) I am struck by how differrent they all play. Each of them has a nice own twist, well done Joe!

With only two treasures and 7 fighters down (with one of them dead for certain, the treasure hunter; the others being the captain, a warhound, an archer, the knight, the barbarian, the apprentice) I was really hoping to find enough gold to pay for replacements. Luckily only two of them turned out the be dead: the treasure hunter and an archer. The captain suffered a smashed jaw. The treasures turned out to be a Book of Bones, 30 gc and three potions: an elixer of chameleon, a potion of fire breathing and a potion of burrowing. I decided to sell all three to be able te replace the treasure hunter and archer and to buy a Grimoire of Raise Zombie. Not yet a liche my mage feels the tug of necromancy as well and having an expendable soldier is never a bad thing. Also, the Book of Bones would be gathering dust unread otherwise, and which self respecting mage could tolerate that...

Sorry I'm late to the party; I've been elsewhere engaged, but I've just read through your thread and it's just awesome! 8)

You sure didn't waste any time getting those minis we traded into action! Great paintjobs on all of them. I'm curious to see what you will do with the Pyromancer... ;)

Coincidentally, I'm painting two units of ghouls right now for my Vampire Counts army, and for one of the Ghasts, I've used the exact same Heresy miniature you've used for your Barbarian!

Maybe I've missed it, but how did you do your bases? Is it textured plasticard on top of washers? Or did you cast some up yourself?

For the bases, it's super simple:

Frickin' heck! :o

You know; I've got loads of Renedra plain plastic bases, but want to base all my Myth miniatures on paved bases. So I've been looking everywhere for plastic bases with such a texture. The only ones coming close were the urban bases by Champ Industries, but they're modern and do not quite match my idea.

So I contemplated using embossed plasticard, glued to those plain Renedra plastic bases. But Slaters is the only one with a texture close to what I want, and then not quite.

And here are Renedra, doing exactly what I've been looking for all this time. Go figure... ::) lol

So; thanks for the heads-up; I'll be ordering a nice big batch of them soonish now... :D
Title: Re: Count Dragos and his lackeys (update Nov. 2: Basilisk & Sewer Slimes)
Post by: Malebolgia on November 02, 2016, 07:48:15 PM
Time for an update again! Received a big package of awesome Reaper Bones stuff from Miniature Heroes two weeks ago and sat down on them. They were my first experience with Bones! So far I think it's cool stuff. Excellent for big critters. It holds detail well enough, is light and cheap. I REALLY wanted to do my new Basilisk first, the model is just so cool.

Basilisk (Reaper Bones Burrowing Horror)
What a beast! Love the character it has: Well armoured, lumbering and mean. I quickly decided I wanted to do them with metallics. So a lot of drybrushing and edge highlighting. I only needed to paint a bit of leather-like skin on the underside, its nails, teeth and eyes with 'normal paints'. So went fast.
And he's BIG!
The ghoul is on a 25mm base and the Basilisk on a 50mm base. So yes, he has some oomph on the table 8).

I also did his creature card:

I am making creature cards for all of my creatures, to create a deck of creature cards. This way we don't have to use tables anymore. Simply draw the top card when a creature appears. And we don't have to go through the books for stats, much easier this way.
(yes, when using cards you have bigger chances of meeting nasty creatures...but that's okay. It's cool to let them have more time on the table :))

Sewer Slimes
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/slimes.jpg)
Calling these paintjobs would be silly...they took me 10 seconds per model! They are transparent Bones models. I only washed them well and applied Tamiya Clear Green and Clear Yellow to them. Done! Love how they look.
And their cards:

Next up will be a Bat Swarm (with the stats of the Snow Leopard) and a Knight.

:o The wash + Tamiya Clear trick on the oozes is absolutely brilliant! I've never thought of that, but this makes it seem so obvious. Looks really good.

Also nice to see the basilisk painted. I didn't realize it was that big, even though I've been thinking of getting one on a few occasions.
Bones really are nice for medium-sized or larger monsters. And even some of their later human sized ones are getting pretty good. I've been painting up some of their townsfolk as set-decoration and scenario-objectives, and for that they work really well.

Cheers! By washing I mean actually washing them...with water and soap! :D. So to get rid off all the stuff from moulding. Then just splosh on the Tamiya Clears and done!

Gorgeous models.  Nice idea with monster deck.

Would it be possible if I could get your PSD template for these?  I'd love to make my own deck as well.  If not it's cool, I can piece something together in photoshop.

One thing you could do to make up for the differences between dice is just print multiple monster cards for the lesser monsters.

I've got my eye on those burrowing horrors for the use as Devourers.

Woops  :D Still clever and probably a pretty good idea as well. I also always wash my bones minis (as do I resin and often metals too)

That just makes the method even simpler and nicer  lol

@Jennifer: Sorry, totally missed your post! But sure you're free to have the .psd and work with it, no problem! PM me your mail address and I will share them. They're not very well organized as files, but that's the way I work in Photoshop ;)
@jp1985: thanks! And yes...once I saw how big they are I also thought they would be awesome Devourers. But I have an incoming Devourer from the USA...it's huge and it's spidery! 8)

Update! The Wight King
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/wightking.jpg)
Once again a miniature that had been collecting dust for way too long! After the last game my Templar died and I decided to replace him with a Knight...and I also found a Vampiric blade. So this model was perfect! I had lots of fun painting him. The metallics went nice and fast and although the cloak cost me some time I loved every minute of it.
Next up will be a zombie Werewolf, to use as Zombie Troll in game 6 of the Lich Lord campaign.

Update!
Tomorrow we're playing the 'Run of the Rangifer' and I wanted to finish some more stuff. Some miniatures and a bit of scenery this time.

Bat Swarm (to be used as Snow Leopard)
Easy and fast paintjob. Not the best one, but in hindsight it would have been better to get it in metal instead of Bones. For a model like this it's a bit too soft. But hey, one more done! And he'll be summoned by my Vampire :)

Minor Demon & Imps
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/fire1.jpg)
Once again some fast 'cheats': semi-translucent Bones with a bit of drybrushing and washing. Nothing special but it works.

Zombie Werewolf
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/zombie_werewolf.jpg)
One of those miniatures that were in my stash for almost 20 years...so cool to get him painted. And it took only an hour or two! So silly he just collected dust for so long. And a blast to paint too with all those gribbly details. I just love Ridolfi's sculpts 8)
We will be using them for scenario 6 in the 'Thaw of the Lich Lord Campaign'. That game requires a Zombie Troll, which I don't have. But I prefer a Zombie Werewolf so he'll make a great stand-in.

Walkways
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/walkways1.jpg)
So far our games were a bit '2-dimensional' and I really wanted to add some walkways. They were made with sticks from fireworks (collected on January 1 on the streets ;)) with Storm Sticks wooden sticks. The sticks are quite big, but they work well for walkways and don't take ages to assemble (in comparison to coffee stirrers). And as you can see the walkways are quite long, so lots of options for gaming. I added some plastic icicles to the underside. Bought these 10 years ago from Dragonforge and finally I found a good use for them 8)

And here's a 'battle pic' with two of my recent painted miniatures on top of a walkway:

Friday I will update the thread with a game report!

Cheers mate!

Thaw of the Lich Lord – Game 5: Run of the Rangifer
Me and my mate played our fifth game in the Thaw of the Lich Lord campaign. He had secured himself a Book of Raise Zombie (to complement his Book of Bones) and now was bringing along a zombie. I was bringing a raised zombie and a summoned Bat Swarm (Snow Leopard). Unfortunately I failed to cast Fool’s Gold.
Here’s the table before the game:

I deployed first…Apprentice on the left with two Soldiers, Captain and Barbarian next (to get the treasure in the tower), then my vampire with some soldiers. Raz deployed heavily on my left, in the middle and with a light right flank. Here’s my deployment:

So the Rangifers were looming close by. I hoped to evade them during the first Creature phase…
My wizard and his soldiers advanced, staying out of 10”. My wizard pushed the nearest Rangifer away in the hope of harassing my opponent. His wizard advanced and did the clever thing: pop smoke to stop the Rangifers from jumping on him right away. A bit of a gamble with the thief standing close by, but a cool move nonetheless. My Apprentice used his scroll of Elemental Hammer to make my Crossbowman even scarier (Raz hates him :D). The Crossbowman shot his archer…BAM! 6 damage…wounded. And there was much rejoicing. The Treasure Hunter ran up, but he would have a hard time going against a Captain, Treasure Hunter, Skeleton, Apprentice and Warhound…
The rest moved up and we were ready for the creatures. The first Rangifer moved right for his forces:

The second was inches away from his Captain and Treasure Hunter and jumped on them. The combat didn’t result in anything exciting.

But there came the Wraith Knight! He arrived close to the Rangifer and charged the poor creature right away. With two Elfs supporting him he easily skewered the Rangifer. First kill of the game!

So far so good! But then it all changed as the other 4 Rangifers all went for me! One barged into my Barbarian, the next into my Knight (with a third running behind him) and the fourth jumping on my Archer. Oh dear…

So the second turn would be interesting straight away! My wizard tried to Bone Dart a Rangifer, but missed. Raz’ wizard had a VERY SNEAKY move by Leaping his Thief unto the walkway, closing in on the treasure in the tower. But…but…that one was mine! :D
His Templar attacked the Rangifer in the centre, with support from the Knight. But I rolled a 20 for the Rangifer, ripping the Templar apart (insert Mortal Kombat voice: fatality!). Then his Captain jumped into action. Supported by a skeleton he charged the Wraith Knight with his Sword of Undead Slaying. Raz rolled a 20 and as a result he did a looooooooooooooot of damage, killing the Wraith Knight and banishing it back to the Lich Lord. Awesome move.

Then my Captain jumped into the combat with the Rangifer, did some damage and slammed the beast 3” back with his Club of Battering. This gave my Barbarian the space to zip into the tower, going for the treasure. The ghoul roared while sprinting up the stairs, ready to clobber the Elf Thief.

My Tunnel Fighter drank his Potion of Burrowing to move through the crystals, giving support to the Bat Swarm. They swarmed into the Rangifer, tearing it to bits. They were pleased with the steaming flesh.
My Knight sliced a Rangifer apart…and another! The Rangifer on my flank simply ripped my Archer aside (Mortal Kombat voice: fatality!), taking him out in one blow. Ouch! He advanced into Dragos the vampire…I was a bit worried.

But my Knight helped his boss and killed his third Rangifer. For a newly employed soldier he did VERY well. On my left flank my Treasure Hunter went for the treasure close by. My Bat Swarm swooped in to help. His Captain held back to see who he could charge. My apprentice had summoned an Imp who harassed his forces, taking out a Warhound before being killed by the Treasure Hunter. His Treasure Hunter killed my Bat Swarm and was then leapt away to his table edge. Curses! His thief was scrambling away from the ghoul with the treasure and was also leapt away. CURSES! My wizard did a sneaky move by casting Control Undead on my mate’s Skeleton. His Champion swunghis blade and killed the Skeleton straight away. So annoyed…his Apprentice raised a new one :D. Meanwhile, my Knight climbed the ruins to get to the nearest treasure. By then my Tunnel Fighter had secured a treasure, as did his Archer in the centre and his Barbarian on the right. So it was looking to be 3-2. A Banshee had appeared too, but fortunately she stayed on the flank.

My Barbarian was in a killing mood, so jumped down the walkways and joined the fray…now with the Captain. A Treasure Hunter and Barbarian, should be easy eh…not really. The Captain deals damage to both, rams them away and then quickly moves back towards the table edge. The Elfs now have secured the 4 treasures…so why stay fighting?
I agree and back up everything, but the Knight grabs my second treasure and it promptly attracts a Frost Wraith…close by! The Frost Wraith sees the Knight and runs into him. The Knight is in a killing mood and stabs the wraith…but instead is hurt himself! He stays standing on 4 wounds…oh dear…
My Apprentice manages to cast Control Undead on the Banshee and runs the Banshee closer to the fight to support (but honestly we were a bit confused on how a controlled Banshee actually works!).

So my Captain quickly scrambled over the ruin, while my Knight dodged the Frost Wraith. My Captain swung the Club and smashed the Wraith apart…and that ends the game!

Aftermath
A cool scenario. I killed 4 Rangifers and a Frost Wraith, while Raz killed 2 Rangifers, Wraith Knight, Imp and Skeleton. We didn’t kill a lot of each other’s models, but the city was filled with a lot more dead creatures afterwards!
It’s a bit of a shame it’s so hard to let the Rangifers live. They’re too close and too aggressive, so jumped on us instead of running away. Oh well, so we killed them.

After the game it turns out my Archer was killed…noooooo! Matei was a part of my warband since game 1. He will be remembered as a zombie. The Bat Swarm was fine. Raz’ Templar turned out to be killed by the Rangifer, while his doggies were fine.
For Raz his 4 treasures he found a second Book of Bone (+250 gold), a Grimoire of Wall, some scrolls and potions and lots of gold. So he upgraded his base and bought a Soldier, while learning the Grimoire of Wall. His wizards gained 4 levels IIRc.
My wizard gained 2 levels, found another Vial of Starlight, a Grimoire of…Control Undead and lots of gold. So once AGAIN I find a Tome for a known spell. Doh. So I sell the Grimoire and Vial and buy a Grimoire of Brew Potion.
I roll for spells and my Zombie returns, I get off Fool’s Gold AND I manage to brew a potion (Potion of Teleportation for my Crossbowman). So although the game didn’t go that well for me, good results.

We’re REALLY looking forwards to the next scenario (House of Longreach), that really sounds like an awesome scenario with potentially hilarious teleporting going on. It’ll be a month, so time to get more painted.

Really nice photo's you took and another great write-up! Again, lot's good fun, I thoroughly enjoyed all the sneaky stuff :D Too bad the rangifers were all beaten after two turns. I can't figure out how to make them survive the game, apart from hiding behind scenery, but that would make for a very interesting game... But with one wizard going for lichedom and another casting skeletons, I guess, we wouldn't be on a friendly footing with them. With the help from absorb knowledge, my wizard actually gained 5 levels! Offcourse the first one was spent reading through the newly acquired grimoire of wall. It was nice to get most of the treasure for a change, all that gold, awesome! My outpost got some extra ooh shiny stuff! Now onto scenario 6 8)
Title: Re: Count Dragos and his lackeys (update Nov. 30: Assassin & Bile Hounds!)
Post by: Malebolgia on November 30, 2016, 07:14:51 AM
Tomorrow another game (scenario 6 from the Lich Lord Campaign...the House of Longreach!), so time to paint some more miniatures. Having the new expansion, I wanted to field some of these straight away!

Assassin
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/assassin.jpg)
I really like the Assassin and I can see him working together with my Captain for a lot of fun. For this warband I am now only using miniatures with lipped bases to make them fit in...and since I don't want to base any new miniatures on lipped bases, I am using stuff from my existing assembled miniatures if possible. This miniature (a Warmachine Khador Kayazy Assassin Underboss) is perfect IMO: it has that eastern European/Russian look and fits as a badass assassin. Not the Assassin's Creed type, more of an Eastern Promises type. So a hardcore fighter who kills for money, but isn't all stealth and ninja. He's just hardcore.
Painting went nice and fast. I was a bit sloppy here and there, but he will do. Not a big fan of the yellow turf I used on the base, as its dye apparently stained the snow. Oh well...don't eat the yellow snow then.

Bile Hounds
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/biles1.jpg)
I try to paint at least 1 creature (type) before each game, so this time I wanted to finish one too. I found these two awesome miniatures in my stash and saw them as perfect Bile Hounds. They actually are mounts for the Mage Knight Horned Hatchetkrugg #109 and the Mage Knight Horned Impaler #117. Honestly, I think they look absolutely terrible as mounts...but as demonic creatures I think they're awesome! I simply tore off the rider (and binned it) and applied some green stuff to the hole. Then primed it black...drybrushed it with green, orange, orange+white and white...painted the bone...painted the purple....done! So fast and I like the end result. I almost applied some slime around around their mouths, but in the end I liked how they looked now. So kept it this way.
They are big creatures though:
Maybe a bit big for Bile Hounds, but I like them as they are.

Tomorrow game 6 and Friday a report...and then it'll be time to paint a new miniature for my wizard, so all of them are on lipped bases.

Title: Re: Count Dragos and his lackeys (update Dec. 2: Game 6 Lich Lord)
Post by: Malebolgia on December 02, 2016, 09:50:43 AM
Yesterday we played another game of Frostgrave and it was time for the 6th game from the Lich Lord campaign: The House of Longreach. We were both looking forwards to this game, because of the random nature of it. It looked to be a bonkers game. We would see…

Table layout
(http://paintoholic.nl/frostgrave/game6a.jpg)

We had some fun with the walkways, making a weird crossing, but it looked cool! My mate Raz made a 1’ square dungeon room for the lost treasure chamber. The treasures were guarded by two Frost Wraiths.
My deployment:

(left my Knight, Tunnel Fighter, Warhound. Left centre my Bat Swarm, Archer, Wizard, Treasure Hunter. Right centre my Captain and new Assassin. Right the Apprentice, Crossbowman, Zombie and Barbarian)

The game started and my mate had the initiative. His archer, skeleton and wizard advanced and the archer tried to take down the zombie…but missed. His skeleton picked up the treasure, but no creature appeared. My wizard had a sneaky idea and advanced with the Treasure Hunter. He saw the Skeleton in the distance and cast Control Undead. The creature was powerless against my vampire and he was now all mine…MINE! Mwuahaha. And the skeleton carried a treasure too!

He sent in his Knight, who simply crushed the skeleton. What a shame! My Captain and Assassin advanced and went for the gate on the right. The Assassin went through…and was teleported straight to the treasure room! Ha! But then he found he was quite alone..with two Frost Wraiths spotting him…Poison against Undead? Nope. Assassin bonus when fighting alone? Nope. He felt a bit troubled.

The Captain had also jumped through…but he got fizzled and suffered 2 damage…but nothing else happened. Curses!

My Barbarian also hopped through, but he was displaced to the other side of the table. My Crossbowman fired at his archer, but missed and then hopped through. He also appeared on the other side, close to the Barbarian. My Warhound jumped through a gate and appeared next to the Crossbowman. The hound jumped on top of the temple and closed with the Elf Archer. The Captain jumped in, but he was bitten by the Warhound. Instead, the Elf Archer took him down.

My Knight jumped through and smashed right into the Elf Knight! The Elf was caught off guard and my Knight skewered him on the Vampire Blade. First kill!
But then the Barbarian, Warhound and Templar joined the fight. My Knight managed to wound the Barbarian, but was slain by the Templar.

His Captain decided to man up and jump through a gate…appearing on the other side of Felstad :D. His Captain is becoming a bit of comic relief by now lol. My Bat Swarm fluttered across the walkway through a gate and also appeared next to his soldiers…and my Barbarian too! This was turning into a big melee!

Meanwhile my archer and his archer and Apprentice duked it out with shooting…but all shots flew wide.

My Wizard had jumped through a gate and appeared on my left flank. Drats! He was in position to Bone Dart now…but missed the Treasure Hunter. The Elf was chasing my Crossbowman who was running away with his unloaded Crossbow!
My Treasure Hunter and Tunnel Fighter had secured treasures, while his Thief and newly summoned Skeleton did the same.
Meanwhile my Captain had also reached the Treasure Chamber and had easily smashed a Frost Wraith into a thousand ice crystals. My Assassin got  tiny cut from the Frost Wraith before crushing the creature. The treasure’s all mine…MINE! Turned out the Assassin found the Fire Heart Gemstone and the Captain found a regular treasure.

By now the Warhound and Treasure Hunter had caught up with the Crossbowman, who was wounded by the combined attacks.

They were grinning, they easily had the upper hand…until four Death Cultists and a Zombie Werewolf showed up next to them. Uh-oh…

The Cultists charged in. The Warhound tore the first one’s throat out, but was then taken down by the others. The Treasure Hunter managed to take out 2 of them! The Elfs were going through the like a hot knife through butter.

My Archer continued the firefight with his Archer and managed to wound the pesky Elf. Take that!
My Crossbowman got stabbed by the last Cultist and now the Treasure Hunter was facing off against both of them. Even then he inflicted a heavy hit on the Zombie Werewolf! The Elf was on fire!!

Back on the other side the Elf Barbarian and Elf Archer were taken out of the game, while my Barbarian duked it out with the Wizard. Although the Wizard downed the Barbarian, he was taken down to 5 wounds. My opponent cast a Bone Dart and had to cut for 1, wounding him. But it paid off, as the Bone Dart took down my Archer. My Bat Swarm was also taken out of the game, but it managed to wound the Templar. By now my Zombie had shuffled all the way to his lines and joined the fray.

Finally my Wizard had managed to reach the treasure chamber. He cast Fleet Feet on the Captain and the three prepared to jump through the fun fair gates again.

The Treasure Hunter dispatched the Zombie Werewolf and was ready to take out the Cultist.

His Treasure Hunter also dispatched the last Cultist, making him the man of the match. 3 Cultists and a Zombie Werewolf...awesome score 8)
My Apprentice was slowly backing away from the action…but I missed the small Construct roaming the snow. The small creature leapt into my Apprentice and wounded my lackey. Uh-oh!

My Wizard jumped out of the gate and appeared close to his lines. He raised a new zombie and together they prepared to take down his Wizard. But his Wizard got the Initiative at the right time and the wounded Elf managed to limp away. He even managed to fend off an Imp, before leaving the field. Next time…
His sneaky wounded Archer shot at the combat between the Construct and Apprentice and the arrow skewered by Apprentice who went down. Noooooo! Finally, my Captain and Assassin carried the treasure away and we called it a game.

Post Game
I had a LOT of casualties (Bat Swarm, Warhound, Crossbowman, Archer, Barbarian, Knight, Apprentice) but fortunately I only rolled a ‘miss next game’ for the Archer and Bat Swarm!
For Treasures I found 3 Grimoires! ANOTHER Grimoire of Lichdom (+250gc), a Grimoire of Illusionary Soldier and a Grimoire of Crumble.
My Wizard gained 5 levels…so read the two tomes, improved Animal Companion,  Lichdom and Control Undead.
I secured a lot of gold, so decided to buy something cool: A magical crossbow with +2 damage. Raz HATES the Crossbowman, so this seemed to be the best choice :D. I rolled for Out of Game spells…my Wizard made a Potion of Healing, a new Zombie arrived, I summoned a fake treasure…but failed my Animal Companion and Illusionary Soldier spells.

So a very cool game. Loads of fun with all the whacky teleporting. My gamble of jumping through with lots of models actually paid off, since I ended up in the treasure chamber with the right models and managed to stall his forces with the others. This gave me enough time to secure the treasures. And I was lucky with my injury rolls.
But excellent scenario…also very nice for one-off games. You can’t really plan ahead and weird things are bound to happen. What’s not to like?

Title: Re: Count Dragos and his lackeys (update Dec. 18: Dragos the Eternal!)
Post by: Malebolgia on December 18, 2016, 07:49:07 PM
Dragos...the Eternal
“Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men, doomed to die,
One for the Lich Lord on his dark throne
In the City of Felstad where the Shadows lie.
One Lich to rule them all, One Lich to find them,
One Lich to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.
In the City of Felstad where the Shadows lie.”

We're completed more than half of the Lich Lord campaign and I felt it was time to "upgrade" my Vampire Dragos. His 25mm washer base started to bug me when the rest of his lackeys is on a 30mm lipped base. Instead of rebasing him, I decided to paint a new miniature. I found this Reaper Skeletal Champion at my local games store and really liked him. One thing though...he is HUGE! So Dragos would have gained a lot in power...and stature. But then again, he is level 32, has the Staff of the Leech (+2 damage magic staff), Gloves of Casting, a potion of restoration and the Fire Heart Gemstone. So he deserved a grand miniature! I did snip off the silly spikes on his helmet and only kept the "Daredevil" horns.
Had a blast painting him. Kept the colours mostly the same and I think they work well on him.

Wonderful minis and terrain!  :-*

I have just browsed through the entire thread, but did not read all the text; you may have mentioned it, but what kind of scenic snow are you using, please?

Thanks man!

For scenery this:

For miniatures I use Vallejo Still Water with Scenery Workshop ground glass. I mix it up and apply it to the base. I then add a dry topping of the ground glass and let it dry. Blow it off and done.

Update - Ettin
As soon as I saw this model I knew I had to get it. I was instantly reminded of Warcraft 2! :D
So much character and such a cool pose. And it would be perfect as a 2-headed Troll. But I liked to add an Ettin to Frostgrave, so I just renamed it. It is a Bones model so some of the detail is a bit soft, but it's good enough and was fun to paint. For the skin I went with the traditional P3 Trollblood recipe:
Basecoat: Trollblood Base
Shade: Sanguine Base
Highlight: Trollblood Highlight.
This triangle of colours work perfectly together for a nice skintone with warm and cool tones and it fits in with the Frostgrave look. For maximum impact, oomph and contrast I went with a classical bright red mohawk. So another creature done to smash the heroes with!

And the creature card:

Thaw of the Lich Lord – Game 7: The Lair of the Ghoul King
Time for an update…much needed! I’ll start with Lair of the Ghoul King. My mate René assembled a HUGE dungeon for this scenario and it all looked awesomesauce. It’s two sets of Teraclips Dungeons combined into a big structure with a total of 3 levels. We placed treasures, rolled for treasures and both of our big warbands entered the cramped dungeon. We were really looking forwards to this game…

The table
(http://paintoholic.nl/frostgrave/Frostgrave7_1.jpg)

Count Dragos and his lackies enter the dungeon
(http://paintoholic.nl/frostgrave/Frostgrave7_2.jpg)

The Elves enter from the other side
(http://paintoholic.nl/frostgrave/Frostgrave7_3.jpg)

Both warbands start by rushing into the hallways. The Elf Captain and his man-crush the Treasure Hunter lead the way with an archer following and the mage leading from the back (typical Elf tactics!)

Dragos led his Knight forwards and quickened his summoned zombie. The rotting corpse quickly shuffled forwards into the far chamber to block off any sneaking ghouls.

Apprentice Lazlo was escorted by the Treasure Hunter, Barbarian and Tunnel Fighter through a dark tunnel.

The Elf Apprentice moved with the Warhound, Skeleton and Knight unto a stairway to quickly grab some treasure…but suddenly a Ghoul appeared near them! The creature simply tore the Warhound apart…first blood…

From the dark came a deep and guttural laughter. The Elfs heard a scrambling sound and suddenly the Ghoul King was amidst their ranks. A clash of titans!

Dragos quickened the Knight and he, the Knight and the Crossbowman entered the large throne room.  They spotted treasures…the Crossbowman fired a bolt at the Ghoul King and managed to inflict some damage.

The Treasure Hunter and Barbarian heard the Ghoul King race for the Elfs so they saw a golden opportunity to claim some treasure. But what was that noise behind them…?

The Elf Captain had a lot of bad luck in the previous struggles in Felstad, so was frustrated like hell. Screaming an old Elf warcry he launched his assault. With his shield he bashed the huge shovel aside and then cleaved the Ghoul King’s skull in twain. The foul creature crashed to the ground. The captain saw glittering gold and quickly grabbed the golden amulet the creature was carrying.
(René rolled a 20 for the Captain! With support and the Blade of Undead Slaying he inflicted a MAHOOSIVE amount of damage).

The Necromancer’s Captain, Assassin and Archer had climbed a stairway and were now heading for treasure. But suddenly a Ghoul came lurching for them. It crashed into the Assassin and caused a grievous wound. The stout hitman was not doing well against the Undead!

The Elf’s were getting bold and the Captain, Treasure Hunter and a Warhound jumped down into the throne room to snatch more treasures. Unfortunately for them, a Ghoul kept them from easily grabbing the potion.

In a corner of the dungeon the Elf thief had sneaked to an unprotected treasure. Seeing an easy opportunity she moved in, but suddenly heard a strange sound behind her. A Ghoul hag! EEK! Fortunately, the Elf Templar quickly joined her to protect her. Something with honour and a damsel in distress. Elfs…
The Ghoul hag charged the Thief, but was countercharged by the Knight who lopped off her head without much trouble.

Lazlo had a big problem as a Ghoul had jumped him from the dark. He screamed for his bodyguards and the three Soldiers quickly returned to help him. This should be easy, right?
Not really…both the Tunnel Fighter and Barbarian were taken out by the Ghoul and the Apprentice had to fight the Ghoul himself! Uh-oh…

Meanwhile Dragos and two Soldiers had stormed the Throne Room to secure the Ghoul King’s treasures. The Crossbowman took a firing position and grabbed a treasure. On the upper balcony the Captain hacked the Ghoul apart and the Assassin quickly jumped on the trapdoor to stop the Ghouls from entering.

Having dispatched the Ghoul, the Captain and the other soldiers crashed into the Elf lines. They expected an easy fight…

Meanwhile The Elfs in the throne room had dispatched the Ghoul and had rushed towards the treasure. It was a real Mexican stand-off!

Back in a corner two Ghouls had taken down the Zombie and Warhound. They were now shuffling through the chamber, looking for a new prey.

Lazlo had destroyed the Ghoul and now was approaching the Throne Room. Dragos moved into cover and raised a new Zombie to help him. The Elf Mage had also moved into the Throne Room and raised a wall of fog in front of the Crossbowman. Both wizards were eyeing each other menacingly.

With a roar, the Treasure Hunter, Zombie and Knight charged into combat. The Elf Warhound was quickly dispatched but the Necromancer’s Treasure Hunter had a hard time against the Elfs. The Knight saw a good opportunity to grab a treasure.

The Elf Templar moved into the Throne Room to help, but was assaulted by Bone Darts, which wounded him. But still he moved in, going for the Knight. The Elf Captain had taken a grievous wound and had moved away to safety. The Elf Treasure Hunter managed to take out his Kossack counterpart and zombie, so now the Elf Treasure Hunter and Templar squared off against the Knight.

On the balcony chaos had ensued. The Assassin and Archer were taken out by the Elfs, while the Elfs lost their Skeleton and Knight. The undead Captain was taken down to 1 wound. Carnage! By then both sides had lost so many Soldiers, that the Wizards called a truce! Yes, no more fighting between both sides as the Wizards agreed to escape the dreaded Ghoul-infested dungeon together.
The Crossbowman had moved towards the exit, but was hounded by the Ghoul. He had almost escaped when the creature jumped him. Being wounded, this could be bad.

Both sides were mangled and carrying treasure, so escaping the dungeon would take some time. Both Dragos and the Knight carried a treasure each. The Elf Captain was still struggling with a summoned Imp, but managed to take out the annoying demon.

The Elf Treasure Hunter grabbed the last treasure and now the exodus began…

Suddenly three Rangifers appeared from a hidden Trapdoor, near the last treasure. They rushed out and sniffed the air for any Undead.

They were far from the warbands, but close to the Ghouls…

Howling furiously they charged into the chamber and swung their weapons at the undead creatures. The Ghouls were taken by surprise and were slaughtered. The three Rangifers approached the tomb with the treasure and bent in prayer. What the…?

As the warbands were nearing the exit, a Ghoul sneaked from a trapdoor and assaulted the Elf Captain. The Elf was near death and had to fight for his life. The fight was epic and with a masterful stroke the Captain impaled the Ghoul on his blade. The magical blade instantly turned the foul creature to dust.

So close…yet so far. Beneath the escaping survivors came the snarling sound of yet another Ghoul! But fortunately Dragos had magically controlled  a Ghoul  and the creature jumped into the threat. The undead snarled and lashed out at each other while the survivors ran and escaped the dungeon.

Aftermath

What a game! What a slaughter! We both ended with three treasures, but since René defeated the Ghoul King and escaped with the amulet, he sure was the winner.
This scenario is lots of fun, but also very deadly with all the Ghouls. In the end my Barbarian, Treasure Hunter, Archer, Assassin, Tunnel Fighter, Warhound and 2 Zombies were taken out. Ouch! Fortunately I didn’t suffer much. The three treasures yielded me cool tomes (Illusionary Soldier and Brew Potion) and I found enough treasure to hire a new soldier: the Demon Hunter! I have Evil Dead’s Ash from Hasslefree Miniatures, so he would be perfect. To simulate the shotgun I gave him a maical crossbow with extra damage.
So once again a great game and my warband ended up with all kinds of cool stuff. My Wizard read both tomes. I managed to create one Illusionary Soldier, brew one potion, raise one zombie and I summoned a new Bear. Things were looking good.

Thaw of the Lich Lord – The Black Cauldron

We are nearing the end of the campaign! Only 3 games left and hopefully Dragos will become a Lich…
For game 8 I had a ton of miniatures to deploy with the Illusionary Soldier, Zombie and the whole warband. We made a cool table with in the centre the ruined tower. As I had filled up the recessed circle in the middle, we thought it would be nice as Cauldron. And size-wise it also seemed good. Treasures were placed, we rolled for deployment and it was time to grab ourselves a new black kettle!

The table setup
(http://paintoholic.nl/frostgrave/frostgrave8_1.jpg)

The setup:
(left: Lazlo the Apprentice, Zombie, Knight and Illusionary Knight; middle: Bear, Dragos, Tunnel Fighter, Crossbowman and Demon Hunter; right: Captain, Assassin)

Dragos and his warband advanced. The Zombie was magically pushed by Lazlo and ended next to the treasure. It picked it up and shambled back. The Knights moved up…which one was real which was the fake one…?
Dragos, the Demon Hunter and Bear advanced to the centre to take on the Cultists, while the Tunnel Fighter moved under the walkway to get some treasure. The Crossbowman took position on top of the walkway to get the treasure on it and the Captain and Assassin moved towards the treasure on the right next to the small temple.

The Elfs advanced too. The Mage, Templar, Knight and Warhound went through the centre, the Apprentice, Captain, Treasure Hunter, Barbarian and an Archer on my right and the second archer wiith a Thief going for a treasure on my left.
The Thief quickly picked up the treasure…and the ground began to heave and shake. With a roar a mighty worm appeared behind the Elfs. Oh dear, this could be a real problem…

On my right the Elf Apprentice enhanced the Archer’s arrows, while the Captain and Barbarian ran over the shaky walkway. And then the Cultists moved in. The first ran over the walkway and charged the Barbarian. Easy pickings for a Barbarian? Not really, the Cultist gutted the Barbarian and shoved him off the walkway (I rolled a 20…). First blood…an Elf down!

The other Cultists ran out of the ruins to protect their cauldron and slammed into Dragos’ lines. Three stormed the Bear while one went for the Tunnel Fighter. The newly created Zombie shambled forwards…

The big worm slithered into combat with the Elfs and a massive melee ensued. The Templar and Archer tried to kill it, but the creature was faster and wounded both. Only the Elf Mage managed to do some damage and the worm was lightly injured. This could turn out really bad for the Elfs…

In the centre, Ash jumped over a ruin and cut a Cultist in twain with his chainsaw. Groovy, baby. The Bear on the other hand had trouble with a Cultist as it managed to hit the animal. But with the help of the –real- Knight and Dragos they managed to take it out. The Crossbowman managed to head-shot the Zombie. Finally, the Captain and Assassin jumped the last Cultist and took him out in no-time. This gave the Tunnel Fighter the opportunity to get a second treasure and move away.

The Elfs continued to struggle with the worm. The Templar was devoured and the Warhound jumped into combat to lend some support. And the Knight and Mage then combined forces and finally managed to take down the giant beast. What a fight!

Seeing the Elfs were occupied with unexpected trouble, Dragos and his Captain quickly moved for the Temple. It seemed so easy, until the Elf Captain jumped down next to the magical construction.

The fake Knight ran towards the Elf lines to harry them, while Lazlo provided more distractions with summoned Imps. Ash tried to shoot the Captain through the door, but missed. The Crossbowman secured the third treasure.

The Assassin ran towards the temple and secured the fourth treasure. He hoped the Elf Archer would not see him…

The Elf Captain kicked the Cauldron and the big kettle toppled…its foul, boiling contents poured over the Knight who was severely scalded and screamed in agony. The Knight was left wounded and the Elf smirked arrogantly.
Not long though…Lazlo hopped to the door and blasted the Captain with a Bone Dart which took the arrogant Elf out. Ha! Take that, facncypants!
Ash, the Captain, Drago and a freshly raised Zombie secured the centre and waited for any Elfs who dared to take their prize.

A Warhound jumped in and Dragos grinned. But as he and Ash tried to kill it, they were bit and pushed aside. What demon hound was this?

The Assassin watched for the Archer and saw how Ash levelled his shotgun and blasted the Elf away. The Kossack smiled and quickly gulped down a potion of Teleportation. A second later and he was on the safe side of the action with one more secured treasure.

The Captain joined the fray and smashed his huge Club of Battering into the hound. Bones crunched and the Elfs heard one last yelp and knew the Warhound was down.
But the Elf Mage had one last trick up his sleeve: the Knight. But before it could charge in and spoil Dragos’ plans, the Necromancer flung a Bone Dart which took the Elf down.
The Elfs knew they wouldn’t win this one and backed off…

Aftermath

That was a weird game! It went fast, was very bloody for the Elfs and my warband was very successful. Not only did my warband claim 4 treasures, they also dragged the Cauldron back to the hide-out. René had some bad luck with the Worm appearing behind his lines and my dice sometimes were on fire.
I found lots of stuff after the game…but sold just about everything. This gave me enough money to buy magical weapons for a lot of Soldiers, helping out against the Banshees in the next game…

Two more games to go!

Title: Re: Count Dragos and his lackeys (March 15: Liche Lord, Throne, Altar, Zombie)
Post by: Malebolgia on March 15, 2017, 06:37:57 PM
Tomorrow we have scheduled the final game...THE FINAL BATTLE! Yes, finally we have arrived at scenario 10 of Thaw of the Liche Lord. So...we needed a Liche Lord. I rummaged through my miniatures but couldn't find one I really liked. Some were regal, but small and carried no weapons. Others were gnarly, evil and tattered but lacked the regality of a Liche Lord. Eventually I went for Reaper's The Angel of Death. The miniature normally comes with wings, which I left off. I used green stuff to make a fake cloak on the back. The painting went superfast. The result is a gnarly and evil liche in a tattered outfit (not very regal no), but I like him as he is. He'll do the job!

But he needed some furniture in his personal floating castle. So I quickly dug up an old Citadel Lord of the Rings Sauron's throne and a Thomarillion altar. Two quick paintjobs later and the Liche has the stuff to sit like a lord, cast spells and sacrifice stuff.

And finally yesterday evening during the latest episode of The Walking Dead (fitting eh) I painted a zombie. I already had a painted zombie, but that one's on a 25mm base while the rest of the warband is on 30mm beveled bases. So this one fits in a lot better!

So tomorrow the grand finale, where I will see if Dragos will be successful at becoming a Liche...

Lovely conversion work on Mr L himself and you did a cracking kob on the other elements for the game.

As an added bonus: I had no idea that Sauron's Throne could look so good.
I guess I never really looked at it properly before.
Only problem is ....I now want one!

@Mason: yes, the throne is awesome. At first I thought it was a bit quirky and too comical. But after painting I knew this was an ace model. Perfect for dungeon crawling and such and loads of character. Think I got it from LAF!

Title: Re: Count Dragos and his lackeys (March 22: Lich Lord game 9)
Post by: Malebolgia on March 22, 2017, 08:16:13 PM
Thanks guys, much appreciated :). More new paintjobs will follow once we start out new campaign.

Speaking of which…time to get the ending of the Thaw of the Lich Lord! On to game 9…

Thaw of the Lich Lord – The Bone Wheel

Now first of all, we didn’t have a suitable Bone Wheel or got one done. Would have love to, but we had no fast ideas. So instead we used my old Weathertop ruins as the Bone Wheel and covered the table with scenery…leading to the ruins covered with 6 treasures.

Count Dragos and his lackeys deployed in the lower left while the Elf Mage and his soldiers deployed in the upper right. It was an odd start as this would be the last game where we would fight against each other with these warbands! The Banshees were placed and we were ready.

We both started by peppering the Banshees with all magical ranged weapons we had (note: at the time we weren’t aware that magical bows/crossbows have no effect against Banshees…) and both were severely wounded fast. Dragos had a tricksy trick up his sleeve…he cast his newly studied Teleport spell and WOOSH teleported to the center, right next to a treasure!
I just did it because I wanted to try something different and bold. It felt good! lol

Dragos next used his magical powers to raise a fresh zombie from the snow (and yes, the one in the back crumbled into bits again). Dragos needed an undead mule for all this treasure. It would all be his…ALL HIS…ahum, right.

A race for the centre of the board followed. By then the Banshees had been obliterated into oblivion (they were no threat at all…). My forces swarmed the ruins and around it in an effort to overwhelm the Elfs. It seemed to work as my opponent had only few soldiers moving for the treasures. His Captain secured a treasure and moved back, as did his Thief.
My Tunnel Fighter had an awesome moment as he ran over the walkway and threw his Explosive Cocktail at three Elves, taking two out! Ha! The Treasure Hunter survived and tried to grab a treasure, but was assaulted by my hound. Get him boy!

The Hound snapped at the Elf and wounded him…almost taking the frustrated Elf out. By now the Elf Mage had also sustained some damage from casting spells.

My flanking force rumbled forwards, trying to harass his archers and mage. My Wizard spotted the Elf Barbarian and flung a Bone Dart at the Elf. The shot was true and the Barbarian went down in one shot. [insert evil laughter]

And then the Elfs had even more problems as three Amplipedes arrived at the scene! They slithered towards the Elf Archer who was close by. One was easy to dispatch, but three…?

In the center my Knight and Illusionary Knight also moved for the Elfs. By then my wounded Assassin and Bear had reached his lines, while his Archer and Templar hacked away at the Amplipedes. My archer peppered his lines, but without effect. In the ruines, the Zombie, Apprentice, Tunnel Fighter and Captain were hauling back the treasures.

Just when it seemed my Assassin proved to be in danger, Dragos magically ensnared the Skeleton which was under Elf control! Now it was the Assassin and a skeleton against an Archer and not my assassin going solo! In addition, the Elf Mage had trouble with the Knight facing off against him. Things were not looking good for the Elfs.

The Elfs decided enough was enough and made a tactical retreat, securing the two treasures they had. Dragos’ forces let them go and took pride in the four treasures they found. Good…

Aftermath

Once again a strange game! It went really fast and was very one-sided. If I remember well only my Warhound was taken out, but he survived. I found several Grimoires but decided to store them. I upped my spells and we were ready for the last game.
In hindsight I think this scenario is too easy for warbands who made it this far as the Banshees were not that scary. The 6 treasures in the center were interesting…but if one side manages to dominate the game it can be rough on the other side. But still, we had fun. And that’s what it’s about eh.

Thaw of the Lich Lord – Game 10 – The Final Battle

This…is…it! The grand finale of Thaw of the Lich Lord. We were really stoked for this game and were eager to take this bag of bones out. Before the game we agreed to play this cooperatively. And with 21 creatures and the Lich Lord on the table this seemed like a good idea!

The table

On the left a long, big, evil wall with in the middle the Lich Lord at his throne and altar. He had just raised an Armoured Skeleton to help him. His two bodyguards were close to him, ready to intercept any interlopers. In the middle 6 Cultists were in the middle of a ritual to bring more undead to their master. And finally, on the far right a full regiment of 12 Armoured Skeletons, ready to obey their master’s wishes.

Time for some action.

Deployment

Dragos and his forces deployed in the lower corner. His ranged Soldiers were aiming for the big block of Armoured Skeletons. Better take these out fast! The Captain and Barbarian would move in to intercept any Armoured Skeletons coming for them.
The rest would move towards the Cultists and the Tunnel Fighter was sent to single out the Wraith Knight in single combat. He couldn’t wound the foul creature, but at least occupy it for a while.
In the upper corner the Elfs had a similar approach with the archers ready to shoot the Armoured Skeletons and the infamous Captain and his trusty Treasure Hunter buddy ready to jump in to take on the rest.

The game

We started the game and both moved up. The Elfs flung Bone Darts and arrows at the Armoured Skeletons and shot down three of them right away. Excellent start! The Captain and Treasure Hunter moved up to take on the rest. The rest of the Elfs moved over the flank or through the centre, making sure the evil Lich didn’t have line of sight to them.
Dragos had a sneaky idea right away. He moved and cast a Push spell at one Armoured Skeleton. The undead was flung back…right off the floating castle, crashing down hundreds of feet below. Mwuhahaha, that was fun! The Apprentice followed his example. The firing squad followed and two more Armoured Skeletons fell down. Only 5 left now! But then it was their turn…
Four Armoured Skeletons engaged the Elf Captain and Treasure Hunter and one moved for my Captain and Barbarian. The Cultists in the centre spotted my Warhound and saw a perfect victim for their ritual. They all stormed towards him. Oh dear…6 Cultists going for my forces straight away. Seeing nobody, the Lich Lord moved down the stairs, coming closer…

The Elfs tried to take down the Armoured Skeletons quickly, but both the Treasure Hunter and Captain were hurt instead! Only one Armoured Skeleton went down. This wasn’t going to plan…My opponent saw he would need to send in reinforcements, which was annoying as the Lich was on the other side of the field!

On my side of the field, the Barbarian slew the Armoured Skeleton and ran into the ruins. In the centre my forces managed to take out two Cultists without much problems and injuring two more. It was looking good on my side.

Time for the creatures…the Cultists continued their frenzied assault and injured the Knight and took the Warhound out of the game. One of the Cultists was killed too…only three left. The Armoured Skeletons attacked the Elfs and two more were taken out, only one remained.
The Lich Lord scanned the field…and spotted the Elf Apprentice in the distance. Easily casting an Elemental Bolt, he fired his icy beam at the Elf:

Yes, that is a 20. The Apprentice was one-shotted (36 damage I believe?)…the first Elf to go down!

Seeing his Apprentice gone, the Elf Wizard knew it was time to act and get the drop on the Lich Lord. So he moved into combat with the Armoured Skeleton. Having two supporters he was at an effective +9 Fight. We rolled the dice…

…and yes, I rolled a 20 again for the creature! Two in a row…the wizard took 22 damage and was also gone. WOAH! This was weird. We were in the third turn and the Elfs had lost both of their spellcasters already. Shocking.
The Elfs then took down the last Armoured Skeleton, taking revenge. By now the Elf Captain was wounded and decided to take some sips from the Horn of Healing. He really needed to catch his breath, poor Elf.

On my side my forces killed another Cultists and the other two were bound to follow quickly. My Knight had fun with his Vampire Blade, slowly healing back the damage. Near the evil wall, the Tunnel Fighter engaged the Wraith Knight for combat (without effect). The Elfs managed to engage the Wraith Knight with four Soldiers, trapping it. The Templar moved in with his magical blade, ready to take out the thing. The Elf Thief did her thing and quickly secured a treasure.

My Barbarian ran up and shouted a challenge to the Lich Lord, while in the back Ash shot the Lich for some damage. Groovy…

My forces finally killed the last Cultists, clearing the path towards the Lich Lord. My strongest Soldiers then made a run for the Lich Lord. If they survived this turn, they could swarm him and clobber the foul thing! The Elfs took down the Wraith Knight and the Monk moved up to take a second treasure.

As the Elf Captain healed up some more, he was shocked to see a fresh creature to appear close to him…an Ettin! The two-headed monster spotted the Captain and roared a challenge.

The Lich saw the Soldiers coming and cast a ball of cold energy towards the greatest group. Boom! The ball exploded and showered four Soldiers with ice shards. The Archer was wounded and the Barbarian and Treasure Hunter got some nasty cuts. But none went down and they continued their charge. The magically hastened Knight, the Barbarian, the Treasure Hunter stormed the Lich to pin him down. This gave my Captain room to charge in with Sprint, Elemental Hammer and Fleet Feet…the Captain slammed his huge Club down on the Lich and the terror was severly hurt, leaving him on a couple of wounds.

The Elfs joined the struggle with the arch enemy. The Templar hit it for some damage and then the Warhound jumped on its back. The Lich was caught by surprise and fell face first unto the stairs. The hound grabbed the Lord’s skull and tore it off. The Lich Lord was destroyed!
A thunderclap could be heard and purple clouds started to appear in a maelstrom over the castle. The floating castle started to shake and groan…it was obvious it would come down! Time to leave.

The Tunnel Fighter was still duelling with the Wraith Knight. Fortunately the guardian couldn’t get through the Tunnel Fighter’s defences. Dragos’ Soldiers quickly rushed in to support him, with the Knight raising his magical blade for the kill. In the meantime the Zombie, Dragos and Apprentice grabbed treasures.

On the other side of the castle the Elfs were trading blows with the Ettin. The Archers distracted the dumb creature, giving the Captain an opportunity to strike it from behind. Even with two heads, the Ettin didn’t see the magical axe…and then it lopped off both heads.

As Dragos’ wounded Soldiers quickly moved back towards the chains to climb down a Bat Swarm entered the castle. Either it was loyal to the Lich Lord or it was attracted by the action…but it came to feed! The Soldiers were in bad shape, so hoped they could evade it. That would be hard…

The Wraith Knight was surrounded by three soldiers now and it seemed the Knight would have an easy time dispatching the evil creature. At the same time the Apprentice moved off towards the exit point.

As the Knight raised his blade to strike, the Wraith Knight suddenly struck unexpectedly, stabbing the Knight through the heart with his icy blade. The Knight instantly became a withered husk and dropped to the ground. Curses! The Barbarian saw it happen and jumped in with his giant magical axe. He swung it down, shattering the Wraith Knight’s blade and then cleaving the thing in twain. It was gone. Now it was time to get moving! The castle was about to come down.

Dragos and his forces quickly moved back towards the exit point. Fortunately for his wounded soldiers the Elf Archers took down the Bat Swarm, making the return easy. The Tunnel Fighter was the last to leave the field with moments remaining before the Castle fell down in a thundering crash of stone, snow, ice and corpses. It was done and it was over.

THE END

Aftermath

What a cool game and what a fantastic campaign. So much fun and so varied in design. The last game was epic in scope and although there weren’t a lot of casualties, the first half was tense and could have gone differently. The demise of the Elf Mage and Apprentice were stunning and odd. On the one hand it was sad for my opponent, on the other hand it was refreshing and gave a new experience.
The Lich King was a tough nut to crack but we had so many Soldiers coming for him…there was no way he could win this one. At the start of the game, we decided models could only exit from our deployment zones and not from the other two corners. This made it harder to escape and we had to hurry to get all of our models off the table. It worked really well and it worked very well this way.

For my 4 treasures I found a load of gold, Staff of Power (1) and an Ivory Scroll (Familiar). The Apprentice received the Staff of Power (1) and the Ivory Scroll. Dragos advanced a whopping 5 levels and read two new Grimoires and advanced three spells. Then it was time for the ultimate spell: Lichdom. With the Lich Lord destroyed, Dragos saw an opportunity to step in as the new major power Gathering his power he cast the difficult spell and tried to become a Lich… Dragos needed a 14 to cast the spell.

Alas! He failed, losing a level and some health and crept back to his base. His plan had failed and his withered body had to heal. He fired his Soldiers, took his Apprentice and moved out of Felstad to his castle. For now Dragos’ adventures in Felstad are over…for now…

Great report (and nice photography as well, BTW)!

I'm looking forward to playing that campaign myself.
