Hi, I'm new to the Forum and wanted to introduce my first experiments with Frostgrave: my Summoner and his companions.
I thought for the thugs the North would be very cold, therefore they've got an extra layer fur to warm them. The miniatures are from the Frostgraves range with parts from Gripping Beast and green stuff.
-
someone to fight: the Necromancer and his companions
-
and something to fight for: the tokens from the nickstarter
-
Nice conversions they look great. You've really captured the Arabic look for these guys while at the same time making them look ready for the frozen city.thanks for sharing
-
The necromancer's band looks great as well.just the type of rough sorts who would hire themselves out to a wizard of the dark arts
-
Nicely done. You've tied the theme of each of the bands together well.
Agree the poor sods from warmer climes would freeze there bollocks off without some extra layers!! :o
-
Very nice, I like the character of these warbands.
-
Nice. I do like a tight 'theme' in a warband. :D
-
I'm just thinking about my visualization of Frostgrave. The first question to me is: how looked Felstad like? I remember Glantri City from the old D&D module, but it seems to extravagant to me. The magical towns I like most are Imrryr, the capital of Melniboné, and the city of Cymril in the Seven Kingdoms from the Talislanta RPG. Both have something in common: lot's of towers. I tend more to Imrryr, because of the sinister aspect of Melniboné (can't imagine a whole town disappears in a magical blizzard because of one lunatic sorcerer - maybe there was more chaotic sorcery in the city and the faults of one Wizard only the catalyst to initiate the cataclysm ...), but I didn't find an image of Imrryr in the net, which I find helpful as a reference for my terrain.
-
Here my first attempt in terrain for Frostgrave. The buildings started their live as Elven Terrain for my LOTR-Tabletop. Any comments welcome!
-
Here detail views from inside the building and the tower
-
Nice scenery, definitely looks like the remnants of a once great city. thanks for sharing
-
Thanks Tyrionhalfman!
Next: Another Tower.
-
I love the terrain, it has a real fairytail quality to it.
-
Great terrain. :D
Much what I'm doing with mine, much less ruined as uncovered. Obviously the weight of all that snow and ice has had some effect, but not every building will be a shell.
-
Impressive buildings.
I like your vision of the city.
-
Really impressive terrain. Great to see unique creations.
-
Thanks all!
@Ray Earle: I took Pompeii as model: There the volcano showered the city with ashes so quickly that much was preserved. In the same way Felstad could be covered with snow by the magic Blizzard so fast that many houses remained in good condition. And they were securely protected by magic. Especially the windows ;)
-
Next: a pavilion
-
@Cymril. Perfect. :D Exactly how I'd envisioned the city myself. Sure there are ruins about but the majority of buildings will still be intact or only slightly damaged. That way I can create some believable height to the table, crumbling wizards towers and observatories surrounded by walkways and smaller buildings.
I really like what you are doing. :)
-
@Ray Earle: Thank you for your kind words! Exciting, that you have a similar idea. I look forward to your creation.
I think it will be fun to have a second level for play. But so far I'm still lacking a compelling idea how to build the walkways.
-
A Tower. I think I'm going to build some more.
-
And here what we got so far: still not so impressive, but already good for a game. :)
-
You're being modest. I would call that all very impressive. Your windows and arts works on your interior walls have inspired me to
steal emulate your idea when I get to building my terrain. It all looks really great.
-
Thanks Geoffrey21, good to hear. I think the purpose of a forum is
to steel to get inspiration from others and this forum has lot's of inspiring threads :)
Next I will paint some LotR terrain in Frostgrave style. This game really gives the possibility to take everything that was never finished and use it. That is one of its strengths in my opinion.
-
Wonderful terrain. Especially all the attention to small details. I think you hit it out of the park with your architectural choice. I could totally see these medievalesque wizards and their cohorts rifling through a like Rome seeking forgotten knowledge.
-
Thanks horrid person. I was always convinced that the details contribute much to the atmosphere!
Here a small update: I had some LotR-Terrain that I converted just by giving it the same color as the rest.
Both from Ziterdes: First the remains of a statue
-
And the tower of Amon Sûl, now the ruin of one of the greater towers of Felstad.
To give a warm welcome to the coming cultists, I added a little ritual circle.
I hope they will feel at home :D
-
I love the theme of the Warbands, very nice!
The terrain is coming along nicely too, I need to work on some myself.
-
@Dakka Dez: Thank for your kind words!
This week arrived my new aquarium decoration from rosewood. I saw it in another thread and found it pretty awesome.
Here it is painted for Frostgrave:
-
I think it can be used in different ways. One is as the centerpiece for the Silent Tower scenario. Therefore I just combined it with one of my Hirst Arts towers. I still have to build the rest of the scenario-terrain.
-
Really love the themed warband and buildings. Lots of inspiring stuff here. Excellent work.
Regards
PM
-
Wow wow wow awesome stuff!
-
The terrain is really cool. This is going to be a great table when it all comes together.
-
Thank you gentlemen! :)
Today a small update: terrain for the Living Museum scenario.
-
Very nice statues.where are they from?
-
Very nice statues.where are they from?
Gamezone elves I think
Good stuff, great choice of figs for the statues too :).
-
Thanks and yes: the statues are Resin-Dark Elves from Gamezone Miniatures.
-
Something new to show. First: Another LotR-Terrain piece which I painted in Frostgrave-Style and added some details.
-
Next: Terrain for the "Well of Dreams and Sorrows". I worked a long time on this piece and it is still not finished. But I think it already represents a good focus for my gaming-table.
-
Oh that piece is very nice!
-
Excellent terrain, love it.
I have been out looking at all my stuff,
have a few things that will look good.
Better paint it first. Then put snow on it. lol
-
Wow great additions - you're on a roll.thanks for sharing
-
Great work. :D
I really love the icicles. Brilliant little touch. :)
-
That well is looking fabulous!
-
Thanks to all!
I think now I will start to make an appropriate battle board to bring everything together.
-
Holy crap! This is all awesome...so perfect for Frostgrave. Inspiring stuff man!
-
Thank you Malebolgia!
Back to my project: I just found this two miniatures on Ebay: the Djinn and the Efreet from the Icons of the Realms Set 3: Rage of Demons from WizKids. In my opinion their smaller miniatures are often terrible - flat faces, little details, bent arms - but the larger ones are not so bad. And they have interesting models.
I will use the Efreet as major demon for my summoner and the Djinn for the "Genie in the bottle" scenario.
-
The Djinn is a nice figure great finds there.
-
I have painted some constructs for my enchanter. On the left are the original Frostgrave Miniatures. On the right I have painted some of my older miniatures as metals-constructs. My idea was, that the originals are ideal to represent the constructs, which a wizard can construct in the wilderness of the ruins with the materials he finds there. The metal ones however are from the golden time of Felstad, so they should look more advanced and at the same time much more antique.
-
Your reasoning is sound the beautifully complicated constructs are a thing of the past and thus wandering or guardian monsters in Frostgrave now. You have a nicely painted collection there.
-
@kidterminal: That's the idea!
As the last tower I wanted something really impressive. So I started with the marvelous Fat Dragon Wizard Tower.
http://www.fatdragongames.com/fdgfiles/fantasy/3d-paper-terrain/castle-winterhawk/winterhawk-wizards-tower-fdg0139
Then I added some detail. I'm pretty pleased with the outcome.
-
An advantage of this piece of paper terrain is, that you can play in every single floor.
-
So this is paper and foam board?
-
Yes. The core is paper. Then some additions from foam board and some Hirst Arts blocks (e.g. the dragon skulls).
-
Yes. The core is paper. Then some additions from foam board and some Hirst Arts blocks (e.g. the dragon skulls).
Very impressive!
-
Thanks!
The following building is more or less from the same materials, but completely scratch built. I wanted the facade of the Town Hall standing still intact, while the rest of the building was destroyed by the cataclysm.
-
That's pretty impressive and very interesting design. ;D
-
Yep impressive. Did the architect have a breast fixation? ;)
Seriously though, love the colours and the details.
-
Uuuuuuuu - I have never looked at the domes from this perspective. :o
Perhaps the architect was simply a relative of Bloody Stupid Johnson from Diskworld and actually this wasn't the Town Hall but the meeting room of the Young Men's Reformed Cultist of the Ichor-God Bel-Shamharoth's Association? I should consider to add some pink tentacles :D
In every case: glad you like it!
-
^^^ lol
Great buildings.
-
Breastgrave. :o
:D
-
;) I must hastily change the subject of this discussion! Perhaps by posting a detail shot: The arcade of the building with a figure for size comparison
-
That's one huge b... building! :o
-
Here is another simple conversion: the building started its life as a Warhammer Chapel. I added a Hirst Arts roof and painted it. I will use it for the Mausoleum scenario.
-
Needs a dome...
Just kidding! It looks great. And it fits the scenario real well
-
I knew I had forgotten something! ;)
-
Needs a dome...
That was funny. Made me laugh.
-
The roof looks good.
-
And now for all "domes-fan": today is DOMESday: All my Hirst Arts Towers with - of course - their domes ;)
-
You have an impressive collection now.
-
Thanks! I still I need some floating bridges to connect the towers and my board still is a little bit to black ;)
-
But now to something completely else ;) Yesterday my Bloodrage Kickstarter arrived and I think some of the miniatures will fit well in my Frostgrave games. Unfortunately, the human miniatures are slightly too big. But perhaps as some tall barbarians they will be useful (see the Frostgrave soldier for size comparison).
-
They seem great to me, not heard of that release.
The monsters look sweeeeeeet!
-
There is a discussion of the game here in the forum:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=76219.msg1017298#msg1017298
I found Blood Rage by chance, because it was linked with the Conan Kickstarter. One Conan scenario will use the miniatures.
-
Just a quick update: As some of you may have noticed I used parts of GWs Baleful Realmgate for my Well of Dreams and Sorrows (actually I used blue stuff to make moulds, but that is another story). So here is the rest of it attached to the ruined facade of a building. I'm thinking about a special scenario for this. Any suggestion what should come out or what should happen to wizards, when they use it?
-
Wonderful, wonderful scenery.
-
Lovely scenery all, Cymril! But that last piece is particularly nice, very ominous, perfect for the ruins of a magical city. I'd say either a steady stream of demons has to come out, or otherwise anyone who uses it may gain a stat increase for the remainder of the game, or run the risk of turning into some sort of abomination...?
-
Thanks all!
And Crazy Ivan: good ideas. In the first variant it would work like the mausoleum. The second could give a sense of Russian roulette to the game :)
The following occurred to me:
1. Some of the ancient wizards escaped from the cataclysm by taking the portal. Now they come back and find their town destroyed and haunted by marauders (the players). Which makes them very angry. But their forces fade, so every round they'll get less dangerous.
2. The portal is one cause of the cataclysm, opening a door to the world of a non-human people (like the Vadhagh or Eldren by Moorcock) which didn't like the visit and sent a blizzard to close the door. Yet the connection is stil established. So it is the passage to some incredible treasure, but whoever uses it, risks to wake the perils slumbering behind.
3. The portal used to be the magic metro of the city, but now gives some game advantages: you can step through and go to every place you like on the table. Or you can send a spell or an arrow through it, to hit an enemy, that is hiding before your eyes.
4. The portal must first be activated by runes. There a five runes in the game. If a player gains at least two, he can get through and gets the same number of treasure tokens as he has runes. When activated every player can use the portal that way.
5. The portal is activated from outside. For unknown reason some Eldren appear and hunt down the players, trying to kidnap them and disappear with them through the portal (could even be something like in Predator, but without Schwarzenegger ;))

Here are some first impressions of my gaming board for frostgrave. I'm still not content with the snow. Any suggestions welcome!
-
Next Hirst Arts tower variant: the observatory.
-
Whoah this is some serious work! Looks amazing man. I think the snow effect looks really good personally, keep it up ;)
-

my .02 cents:
like the coloring, but texture seems too grainy - looks more like sand.
maybe use some acrylic medium/gel for a smoother surface. snow at this scale should not show grains (IMO). I've shoveled enough of it to know... :)
-
Thanks and thanks for the tip pacarat, I will give it a try!
-
This are my new frosted dice from Chessex. I think they are perfect for Frostgrave!
-
Played a game of Frostgrave this week. Enchanter vs. Necromancer vs. Summoner. It was fun and for first time I could use my own terrain. I wanted to share a picture of the setup with you.
-
The snow looks perfectly fine for something that's thawed a bit and then frozen over again which in turn seems appropriate for Frostgrave. The whole thing looks wonderful, very evocative and full of character.
-
Very nice!
-
I like your board spirit. This look like old magical city.

Fantastic.
Thanks for posting the images.

Wow! :o I don't think I've ever seen a more awesome table. :-* I can imagine that this was exactly the kind of table that Joe had in mind while writing the rulebook.
-
This table is definitely something to aspire to! Awesome!!
-
That has all come together really well love the look of your table.
-
Amazing set up. Thanks for sharing
-
wow, looks great for a city scenario
-
Amazing work :o
-
Thanks for all the kind words! The threads in our forum helped me with a lot of inspiration, and it was fun to build this scenery for such a great game!
-
Fantastic set up. Nicely done.
-
This looks wonderful
-
I reflected a long time, how I should paint my cultists. Until recently, when I was in the cinema. Now presenting: Lich King - the Force Awakens! Staring Black, Red and White ;)
And as you can see, the local population is actually revived by the New Order.
-
Your terrain is awesome! Love the detail. I am wondering what materials and how you made all the powdery snow.
-
Great choice of paint on those guys. Looks very menacing. And a little like the KKK lol
-
Thanks!
@Jennifer: materials are mostly Hirst Art stones and paper-faced foam board. And some ruins from Ziterdes. For the snow, I experimented a long time, then I used mostly GW Snow and 4Ground Snow.
-
After a while something new: my attempt to make a Vadhagh party to explore the frozen city.
-
Great looking stuff. Love the realmgate into the wall, great idea!
-
Lookin' fantastic.
-
Lots of great inspiration here. Where did you buy or how are you making your icicles?
~iPaint
-
The icicles are from an old box of accessories for model railroad from Faller:
http://www.faller.de/App/WebObjects/XSeMIPS.woa/cms/page/pid.14.17.203/agid.1314/atid.846/ecm.at/Winter-set.html
I got them on eBay. They still produce similar icicles, but now in a set with houses:

-
A small boat to row the frozen river :)
-
That is a gorgeous looking board! Really love the way it all looks but I was wondering if you found the height a challenge for during the game, especially around the edges. We use a mishmash of largely 40k cityscape terrain at my FLGS when we play Frostgrave but there have been a number of times that the height has made checking line of sight almost impossible.
-
Last Christmas brought me a Targetlock Laser line from Armypainter.
See http://shop.thearmypainter.com/products.php?ProductGroupId=5
It helps a lot.
More problems with the height come from clothes: woollen pullover and similar clothing tends to entangle with the buildings when players move their warbands. Sometime this causes a catastrophic collapse of terrain... But I think that's the risk, when you visit a ruined magical town :D
-
'bout the best terrain board and pieces I've had the pleasure to see online. Feel like you've had a great game, just seeing the photo of it.
not sure why some above had to mock concerning the domes, as I think they're great ... seriously - quick guide to how you put them together?
-
Thanks for your kind words!
Concerning the domes: most of them are are made from polystyrene balls. I just cut them half. With stripes from cardboard the domes become more structure. The top of the dome is made from a hirstart form: Turret Mold #61 (the mold includes a complete domed roof, which I used as an alternative to the polystyrene balls. But the balls are cheaper, easier to made in my opinion and they weigh much less). Then everything is sprayed with spray paint in a bronze colour tone. The last step is to paint the cardboard stripes and the top in Citadel Nihilakh Oxide. And of course to add snow and icicles.
-
thanks very much.
-
Finally something new: a barbarian warband
-
And something to get in trouble with in deep dungeons: ;)
-
8) way cool warband!!!
-
superb new additions.
