Title: Zaheer's Dark Age terrain, painted pics on page 2
Post by: Zaheer on August 28, 2015, 09:52:12 AM
A few of you may have seen the Clochan which I made a long time ago, and which was featured in Mason's incredible Mordheim thread. Well, being a glutton for punishment and having felt like I could do a lot better since I finished the last hut all that time ago, I've had another crack, taking a more methodical approach. I hope that you like what I have so far, as ever I've noticed a whole host of things to address since taking the photos, but I present it here warts 'n all for c&c.

This will be available for sale at some point I imagine, but I'll need to knock a few more masters together before getting the silicon in. Any requests?

Awesome stuff.  o_o

What have you constructed it out of?

Bigger than the last one (which gets a lot of use in my games). Count me in for one of these too, as for requests......a small rectangular version with turf roof, or even without the roof as scratchbuilding a roof l could probably manage.

My take on v1 is here;

PS..Your Stone walls look excellent as well.

Thank you everyone.

Dijit, each 'stone' is a snapped piece of plaster, it's a case of snap glue snap glue...

Robh, I'm working on a version of the Gallarus Oratory next, I think I may make it a two-part cast which could take the corbelled roof or a thatched version.

Looks amazing! Both buildings will be great e.g. for a Irish warband in SAGA.

Add me to the list, mate.

The first one was great and paints up really easy.
Highly recommended!

Here is my take on the first version that Zaheer made...

The new ones look great and should take to drybrushing in the same way, very easily, so I see no reason why I should not grab myself another.

Excellent stuff  :-*.

I was once involved in the making of a travellers rest shelter something like this for real at Kielder Reservoir!

It's not quite finished - there's cleaning up, final texturing and bubble filling to do -  but I think you get the idea. I don't think I'll ever attempt a 'slate' built drystone building this size ever again!

It'll be cast as the hut was, so if you'd like one, please drop me a PM.

So I have whacked on a pretty quick and nasty paintjob onto the buildings and taken some photos, I will probably re-do them or get someone competent to take some but they should do for now I hope!

(http://i1284.photobucket.com/albums/a576/Shattered-Dreams-Parkway/Fogou%20Models/20151028_151629_zps0xrgvzm8.jpg) (http://s1284.photobucket.com/user/Shattered-Dreams-Parkway/media/Fogou%20Models/20151028_151629_zps0xrgvzm8.jpg.html)

(I really had no historically appropriate figures painted for scale pics, I have to rectify that!)

Well, that looks good to me! Not nasty in the least.
I've just received my oratory, and can testify it is a brilliant and crisply cast model. I'm really looking forward to painting and finishing it  :)

Nothing wrong with that, mate.
It looks lovely and certainly shows all the detail well.

I have one too and hope to get some paint on it in the next week as I ow have a little more time on my hands.

The photo's and paint job are quite good enough ol'boy. Good and crisp, painting shows the detail well with out any distraction from superfluous fluff, on some nice terrain and a figure for scale. Ticks all the boxes in my book.

Right then. Had an enjoyable few hours at the weekend painting and basing my oratory...  :)

It really is an exquisitely made model. The material is so smooth and fine that I assumed it was resin until I accidentally scraped it. Actually, it's plaster. So this is one piece of scenery you don't want to drop on the floor.

I've mounted mine on a plasticard base because I think it helps to make a building look a bit more grounded. Plus it gives the opportunity for some extravagant tuftage ;)

It's a very versatile model which will serve for anything from the immediately post-Roman dawn of Celtic Christianity, right through the Dark Ages, medieval period and beyond. Think Renaissance Ireland for instance. It'll also be a nice addition for my Game of Thrones project.

I must also say, having spent a lot of time visiting shrines and monuments all around the Atlantic west of the British Isles, from the Western isles to the extremities of Pembrokeshire, and from the west of Counties Cork and Kerry to the farthest reaches of Cornwall, it's an incredibly evocative little model. Very beautifully done.

All I can say, Chris, is - please make some more  :D

:-* :-* Great paintjob and photography as ever cap'n, and thanks for the kind words! It certainly makes the building more 'real' i think, may have to go back and moss up the 'shop copy'. I'm in two minds as to wether to provide bases for the buildings or not, I feel they may be  a bit fragile. I may make interior inserts but just leave bases out of the equation.

Post by: Captain Blood on November 03, 2015, 10:16:19 AM
Thanks Chris. I don't think you need to provide bases - they're easy enough to add. At least this way people have the choice, to base or not to base  :)

If you want to use these pics, feel free. If you would like higher-res copies, let me know.

I've just set up a webstore... www.fogoumodels.co.uk (http://www.fogoumodels.co.uk) where you can get hold of the oratory and the huts.

I LOVE that oratory model.
My Oirish need one of those!

I see you say they're for sale - how do I get one and how much are they?

Thank you, I do occasionally consider making a broch, then I wake up and have to change the sheets.

I think I may well attempt a broch at some point, but it's going to be a little while yet. I have a few 'medium' sized structures coming up next.

Are you still thinking of doing something in 15mm?  A selection of thise drystone walls you showed would be ideal for mini Frostgrave.

Sorry for missing this Nick. I am planning on creating little 'porches' which will convert the door size down to 15/18mm for fantasy purposes.

Thanks all! And yes, it does your equilibrium no good!

I don't, and I'm not likely to anytime soon as it would require even more work than this. However, I may be able to use castings/molds to knock something up. I'll have to have a think...
