Title: My post apocalypse (TNT) updated 9/1-17
Post by: TheCaptain on August 30, 2015, 02:47:23 PM
First off, since this is my first post I thought I'd say hello.

Hello.

Now that the formalities are out of the way, on to the question.
My buddies and I are starting a TNT campaign in a few weeks, and I've taken a shine to the Preservationist faction. Having just built a Frostgrave warband out of the FG soldiers box, with 10 guys left over, I thought the ragtag robed look would work well as a post apoc. tech-cult with some conversions. What I need now are guns and weapons to match said kit. I thought to use the Perry minis Desert Rats box initially, but on further inspection they might be too small. So I was wondering if one of you had any ideas for what I might use instead?

Hi!

I think Wargames Factory do a couple of Zombie Survior plastic sets - these come with lots of weapons.

It may well be that the WGF arms are a bit narrow to fit nicely on the FG bodies.

The Assault Group do seperate weapons and helmets, etc, worth a look:

And so do Hasslefree, including a chainsaw:

p.s. Allo.

Hasslefree also do modern firearms: if the Frostgrave are 'heroic' 28s (I have no idea) then HF also do sci-fi weapons that were intended for larger (GW?) minis.

Edit: oops, just read what Phil wrote

Please keep us posted on the campaign.  Not sure how the Frostgrave Soldiers are scale wise, but with a few gas masks and other modern touches they should work perfectly for Preservers.  The great thing about the post-apocalypse is that you can absolutely have fun juxtaposition between the medieval and the modern.   I also recommend Hasslefree and GW style bits sellers.  The Wargame Factory miniatures may work, but the weapons and figures tend to be more slender true scale miniature and may not work with the more beefy GW style.

Thank for the replies guys. I hadn't seen the survivor box, but I'll definitely be picking that up, if the arms and weaps. don't work here then for other projects as well. As for the campaign I will definitely keep you posted as we get on.

I have both the FG box and the WF Survivors box and I think they'll be a little bit too slight for the chunkier FG guys.

The beauty of playing games where diversity in sourced mini ranges is encouraged is that you only have to satisfy your own, "tabletop canon".  As I have been building my own selection of models I have been able to grab them from all over the place and find it quite refreshing.

The Frostgrave models are nice but unfortunately don't work for me with the choices I have already made.  Like Hupp n at em I picked up some of the Wargames Factory models as a starting point and adopted them as "average" humans.  The Native American historicals produced by the company are very much true scale 28mm.  The bodies are depicted quite accurately and would lithe even compared to the WF Survivors which feel to me somewhere between 28mm true and heroic.  There are some differences that nothing I consider a red flag; they play nice together.  I've added some fantasy 28s from other companies into the mix and have included some AE:WW2 models as well.  I even used a 30mm sculpt to represent a hulking brute.

I really like the Frostgrave sculpts mostly because their forms remind me of the old warhammer quest figs.  They are very much heroics with big hands and faces that I feel skew my scale.  I'd like to use them in Frostgrave where they were intended but supply across the Atlantic hasn't happened yet so I have already started building my range for that game with what I can get my hands on.  As a result I am already defining a bias toward classic fantasy scales and small 28s.

The greatest problem with cross range mixing is having distortion of the norm.  Real people are a diverse group so it takes all types.  If there are many models that share comparable traits with a few "aberrations" it works.  If there are many models with exaggerated proportions the effect doesn't "sell" as well.  A couple Frostgrave models might work well.  A box worth of the same models would make my "average" WG Native Americans look like fly weights.

I know what you mean, one of the guys in the campaign is converting some GW IG into peacekeepers and they look quite bulky next to my guys. Another is using the Black Scorpion Tombstone Apache for his tribals, which seem to mesh well enough with the FG stuff, though we've yet to fully compare. I gotta say though this is the first time we've played something like this, where we're sourcing from different companies, and I agree it's quite fun in itself.

What about Bolt Action minis as a source of weapons and weapon arms? They look smaller than the GW stuff so seem like they might work.

I'm really taken by the novelty of exploring other miniature ranges as well.  I have a sizable collection of GW models and continue to appreciate their contribution to the miniature market but I really wanted to explore something different more recently.  For so many years with a GW being my local gaming store the types of games I could play and models I could use were the same.  I just wanted to paint models with a different vibe than those I'd become familiar with.  I admit to appreciating their fantasy models more than I ever did now that they have moved away from those awful square bases :) .  I think I chose the 28mm scale for this because I was feeling nostalgic about the classic fantasy models (Ral Partha, Grenadier) I had when I was a kid.  A bit of that and burning time on the net looking at mountains of new to me miniatures is a quality time waster :) .

I'm not sure but I want to say that I saw some BA plastic stuff in one of Wyrmalla's threads on this board, you could also shoot him a PM.  He is the most prolific plastic kitbasher on the post apoc board.  :D

Wargames Factory has some more near/dark future stuff on the way as well, with options not found on the survivor kits. As others say the WGF stuff may be thin but still probably better than the Perry WW2 figures size wise.

This has been my plan all along. With the second box coming out in November, we'll have a gob of PA conversion opportunities from the FG sets. Great stuff!

Yeah that's what I figured. I ended up ordering some BA kits along with the survivor box to keep my options open. Where can I see what WGF has on the way? I've tried searching for upcoming products etc. without any luck

There's a biker set coming out that includes motorcycles and mounted as well as dismounted riders.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-P8Zq6tbjkp8/VT57mmEAP8I/AAAAAAAAtNA/7eDp0MVyr3I/s1600/IMG_0656%2B%281

There's also a 'biker hero' sprue, and a 'modern military' set that has a lot of contemporary military weapons from the US and former Soviet bloc- all the torsos are wearing MilTac-looking body armor. I don't think pics have been leaked yet but they've been mentioned elsewhere online. I have the sprues in hand for all of the above, but I'm not able to post pics until I have permission due to NDA ;)

I'm having trouble finding the time to paint, but WGF is negotiating with Warlord anyway, so I have no idea when they'll be out to the public.

How does the biker kit compare scale wise with rest of their range? Is it compatible .

Those bikes look fantastic!  Really looking forward to those.  Excellent design on their part to allow for mounted/dismounted figs.  Hoping they are cross compatible with the the survivors range.  Thanks for the showing.  I hope they offer a peek at the soldiers soon too.

Early next year from what i've heard.

Alot of people seem to think this means wargames factory are going out of business but i don't think it's that bad, if anything they're going to be freed up to work on their kits and not worry about distribution.
Title: Re: A question regarding converting frostgrave minis for post apoc (TNT)

The upcoming kits are pretty much the same overall style as the survivors and female zombies. The previous kits are not what I'd call modular, in that they have some very specific body and arm pairings. I honestly haven't had time to build any of the new dark futures figures so I'm not sure how 'dictated' the arm/torso pairings are.

The newer kits including the AWI are taller and more slim proportions than the older stuff (Dark Ages, Samurai, Rome, etc.) but I've seen people do some cross-range conversions that look just fine to me (using Persians and survivor weapons to make Taliban etc.).

Ok, so in true last minute fashion I decided to change my faction from Preservers to Caravanners, the option of doing a mutant emissary proved too tempting for me.

I found the Bolt action bits, with a minimum of cutting and filling, fitted the FG stuff almost perfectly.

Here are a few pics of the first two members of my nascent warband.

The first Caravan Defender is just a straight armswap with a Bolt Action US marine.

Next one I added a GW IG backpack. Problably use him as a Guard or a Lugger.

So for your viewing pleasure (or indifference/disgust)

The Frostgrave Soldiers box. It's a pretty new kit, with enough parts to make 20 guys, which is funny since its made for a system that only allows you around 10 guys in a warband.

Awesome!  The two new additions are at least as cool as the others.  I love the head choices and just how much character their headwear adds to the models.  It's like the opposite of the fedora/trilby effect IRL :) .

The frostgrave bodies give a very nice rag tag scavenger look, along the lines of the old EM4 scavies (they might not size up too well though...) Very inspired conversions there, keep em coming.

If you wanted more conversion material perhaps you could try some Pig Iron wastelanders? And they have a bunch of backpacks available too.

Cheers

Thanks guys.
Well finally RL slowed down enough for me to get back to the business of building the post apocalypse. Since I last updated we've started the campaign. My caravanners, 'Clint's Traveling Emporium of Wonders and Curios', have done reasonably well. So far racking up two victories, to one defeat at the hands of a savage war party of angry tribals eager to reclaim one of their artifacts, which had somehow found its way into my stock...

So having started we've now begun creating the hazards and random creatures we need for the game.
The images are WIP.

I got my mitts on some Hobbit Goblin warriors from GW which seem to fit the bill for troggs, and I've so far been eyeing the Reaper Bones Troll as a Trogg King.

The first of my Radiation Zones. The barrels are from the Rubicon German Stowage Kit. A pretty nice set, with ammo crates and tracks etc. which will do nicely for the ordnance areas as well. The tentacles are spare tails from an old Skaven kit for Mordheim

Those goblin trogs are perfect irradiated subhumans.  Those look sweet.  I have a set I'd earmarked for cannibal degenerates but I'm concerned I'll miss the mark you hit because I want to paint them so they can pull double duty in Frostgrave as well as TNT.  I think I'll split the group in half and so I don't muddle them.  The skaven tails were a sly choice of bits for your rad zone.

Thanks. I use them pretty much wysiwyg, rifles, smg's, shotguns etc. Got my hands on a pair of Death Korp Gw arms with a regular lasgun as well, with which I converted up to use as a guy with a plasma/laser rifle, since it looks more high tech than the BA stuff.

I've also finished my rad zones and am currently working on some unexploded ordnance areas for another of the hazards. I'll get some pics up when possible.

Hello again.
Finally had some time to post during the holidays, so I figured I'd post my progress on the hazard templates for TNT.

My second rad zone. I used a piece of Dreadball scenery as an ominous machine, with the GW skeleton to help sell it.

Third rad zone. Some cork and putty.

My unexploded ordnance zones. I deliberately made them asymetrical.

My gas clouds and rip wind. Some left over plexi glass, from the kitchen cabinets, with some stenciled paint work and a spray of satin varnish.

And lastly my ember quake token. Since no size was given I simply used a BA base, sprayed black with some lettering.

So with all that, I'm starting work on the last of the hazards, the animal colonies.
That's it for now, hopefully you guys like 'em and as always any advice or criticism is welcome and appreciated.

Hello again. So my group have decided to start a new TNT campaign, this time with a campaign leader/GM of sorts to create overall story arc and make up special scenarios to match etc. I wanted to create a new  warband for a the new start and decided on a raider band, though I wanted something different than the usual Mad Max villains archetype.
In the end I decided on an apocalypse cult and the Brotherhood of New Clear Enlightenment was born.

Lead by Father Callow, or 'Red Skull' as my group have dubbed him. (my Bandit King)

Aha! Are you using Frostgrave cultist parts for your team? I was thinking they would be good bases for post apoc myself. They are looking good regardless - where are the bodies from? I like your work on the terrain pieces, looking good.

Greetings and salutations! Another holiday, another chance to post up some of my progress. Still working on a couple of new members for my two warbands, but I managed to finish another couple of projects.

First off my Trog King, Reaper Bones Troll mini. I was initially a little sceptical of the plastic it's made from, but painted up I think it looks fine and matches the normal trogs just fine.

This is the first of my Horse Spiders, also a Reaper mini. Here I had a few more problems, the thin legs and the 'bendy' material made it harder to get it stick to the base. In the end I used a little green stuff along with the glue and it seems steady enough now.

Next I started work on some of the scenario templates and markers. After talking with our 'GM' I got the sense that our new campaign would have a horror aspect to it, so I made these for Pest Control. Simple enough, they're Renedra gravestones on BA bases.

For Snipe Hunt. The boxes are from a Dreadball terrain kit.

Warlord sells the weapon sprues separately, it's just the arms to hold them that are the problem.  I'm in the process of acquiring some BA players' extras though, so I'd ask around because people usually have extras they're willing to part with.  :)

I got the wolves finished. I picked a dark brown colour scheme, partly because that's similar to the one they had in hobbit, and I always thought they looked really nice, and partly to make them stand of the base more.

Unfortunately the bottom of the pic got cut off.

Hello again.

This time around I've only managed to finish a couple more of the inhabitants of Scrapton, the town that our group's TNT adventures/campaigns revolve around, as well as a few pieces of scatter.

First off a Deadman to add to my freelancer pile. (sorry for the pic quality)

Next a Mutant Emissary for my Caravanners.

Roberto Hinchley, the nefarious mayor of Scrapton, who seems in league with the Trog infestation that lurks in the disused mines on the edge of town. A very sinister character indeed.

Post by: horridperson on May 31, 2016, 06:48:19 AM
That gunsmith for hire is hot!  Really cool figure.  I think it depends on what you are looking for in the PP range.  There is quite a leap in scale from BA's 28mm (sort of heroic but more short and chunky for 28s) to the PP range which is heroics at 30mm+.  It depends on what you raid the range for.  Big scary monsters will be bigger, scarier monsters and probably work just as well.  A "normal" person will be a bit larger but picking an appropriate model might give you a large person that works well in the adjusted scale or an 8' tall ballet dancer (unless that's what you are looking for :) ).

Cheers guys. I'm pretty happy with how the gunsmith turned out, he's the first kitbash I've done so far where every bit is from a different kit. And thanks horrid, I actually thought the PP stuff was 28 not 30, so I see what you mean. Guess the cephs could still work as opponents/encounters.

Very nice!  What sort of mesh did you use for the chainlink fence?  All I can ever seem to find is the sort of window screen that doesn't have the wires soldered to each other, but is instead just tightly woven.  Stuff frays apart way to easily when you try to cut it small enough for terrain...

I was considering using "granny grating" (plastic grid mesh for cross stitch) for just that reason.  It's kind of thick compared to window screen though, so I'd love to know this as well.

THanks guys! Taught a friend of mine, from outside of my regular group, to play today, and managed to get a few pics of the table as we played.

Nice, finally pull the trigger on buying some of the Frost grave solders because of this.

Thinking My setting will be in my own version of Clark County Nevada after the bomb. With the Las Vegas and its out laying communities being devastated with the only major communities being Laughlin,  Mesquite, Boulder City and Mt. Charleston.

Just stumbled across this thread, great kit bashes. I feel that there has not been nearly enough praise for your plastic gorkamorka Trak gunner conversion into a mutant. I think it is awesome  :D

Mutant.

Thanks guys. I got another critter painted up for my encounter pile, a Momma Gnashworm. Another Reaper Bones mini, a nice sculpt, I actually really like this one. Now, I just have to find some smaller ones...

I've only just  found this thread and I have to say they you're doing some really inspirational work (consider some of your ideas sto*** borrowed if and when I get back to playing post-apoc :)

Keep up the good work!

Thank you. I finally managed to finish up the giant rats. Reaper minis again, not the best scuplts, but they're starting to grow on me.

Hello again. Finally getting back into the post apocalypse for a while, at least until BB comes back then I might have to take detour onto the pitch... Painted up a couple of lemures that I'll be using as plague carriers. I picture them as being similar to the melting villain/goon from the first Robocop movie, being eaten up from the inside out.

Hello again. Repurposed a couple of GW Chaos Spawn, to use first in a few custom scenarios and then as Mutant Horrors.

I've never been a huge fan of the plastic spawns; I preferred the pewter model with that vicious dual jaw but they make solid TNT abominations.  I especially like the Trips.  Looks sharp!

Hello again. So the holidays have been busy so I have had less hobby time than usual, however I did manage to finish off a few Deadzone plague hounds that I'll be using as chupacabras.

Next up are some 3rd gen troopers for use as a mutant warband. Hope you like 'em.

Love the dogs!

Seems tricky to track down a decent selection of dog minis for making useful post-apoc packs of hounds...  :?

I think that Hammers had a thread somewhere with a lot of links to mutts of all kinds. He is known as a lead dog connoisseur, you may want to try to find that thread, or contact the man himself.

Thanks. As for the dogs I've been scouring the net for suitable models to use as wild dogs and I'm problably going to give the zombicide dog companions/zombie dogs a try, when I get to it.

I just picked up a pack of the Malifaux Corrupted Hounds (https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bpDiKKI0MnU/WERob2r6tRI/AAAAAAAA_tg/RxbZl98zZqQhmz-uOOyY3Oi2dADe3s6pwCLcB/s1600/Corrupted%2BHounds%2B-%2BGroup%2BPicture%2B%25284%2529.JPG). A bit spiky, but nicely animated.
Just a bit too expensive for collecting a sizeable pack.

I looked at those, but as you say the pricetag along with the numbers I wanted... Its the same with the malifaux silurids, IMO they'd make great Mudcats, but you'd need 2 boxes to have required 6.

So I finished off the deadzone troopers as the start of a mutant warband, no conversions (yet), but I'm pretty happy with how they look for now.

Next up I'll try my hand at converting some more to fill in the ranks. So until then...

Those dead zone plague troopers are spot on.  I like them at least as much as the prodos necromutants.  Great choice and a good looking paint job.
