Title: Sinister's Frostgrave plog
Post by: Sinister on September 06, 2015, 02:27:08 PM
Hello all,

First up as a newly signed up member of the site I'd like the chance to thank everyone on here. All your efforts and enthusiasm have helped kindle my own over the last few weeks.

Like a few people I've noted on here, Frostgrave has dragged me back kicking and screaming into the hobby. Over the last few years building large armies has been somewhat the norm in my gaming circle, and the idea of getting back to the skirmish size games of the good old days was too good a chance to miss.

And so I'm here, not wanting to have my account deleted after four weeks, I'll try and maintain a basic blog of what I manage to achieve and what my gaming group get up to with regards to frostgrave.

Here is what I've managed thus far, all GW models for the most part (my new northstar soldiers box set just arrived yesterday). My enchanter and his entourage thus far.

Here's the group as a whole:

Here's the Enchanter and his hound:

Here's the archer and crossbowman:
(http://i757.photobucket.com/albums/xx217/jonsparrow_album/image.jpg4.jpg) (http://s757.photobucket.com/user/jonsparrow_album/media/image.jpg4.jpg.html)

Here's a man at arms, a thug, and a thief:

Picture quality isn't great, hopefully I can improve that as this blog continues. Again massive thanks to everyone involved in this, and especially Joe for masterminding it all.

Nice bit of gs work. 8) How did you make your bases?

Here's a quick update on how I do the basing, nothing too amazing I'm afraid.

The tools and two part putty I use. It's very quick drying. I'm just using renendra bases.
(http://i757.photobucket.com/albums/xx217/jonsparrow_album/5B21C668-3945-486A-915D-B766128BFE61.jpg) (http://s757.photobucket.com/user/jonsparrow_album/media/5B21C668-3945-486A-915D-B766128BFE61.jpg.html)

A pea size lump of putty is spread thinly over the base.

A cobble effect is sculpted into the drying putty, nothing too fancy.

The two finished bases.

When completely dry sand or file, then tidy with a knife.

Done. You don't really even need to sand it if you like the rounded effect although finger prints might be a issue.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and responses.

Thanks for the quick response Sinister. I thought it was maybe dried plaster, broken up and stuck on your bases.

Andym, you're welcome mate. The putty I'm using does have some similarities to plaster when it's set, but it's a little harder perhaps.

I think you can prevent fingerprints when using surgical gloves.

This is an excellent warband! Really nice work with your choices and conversions.

Just a question from a GW ignoramus... Where do the heads with the fur hats come from?

I love that kneeling crossbowman - nice kit bash!

Are the fur hats from the Frostgrave plastics?

Just a question from a GW ignoramus... Where do the heads with the fur hats come from?

Are the fur hats from the Frostgrave plastics?

Just to answer these two questions, the fur hats are the optional heads from the gw empire archers set. Sculpted by the great perry twins. The warband is mainly a mix of that box set and the empire militia box set (which came from the old mordheim henchmen sprues I think). The shield are from the gw ungor set and you'll see a few odds and ends added from the frostgrave soldiers set here and there. There's a fair bit of green stuff and sculpting here and there, and I plan to do a little more before I'm done.

Next I want to finish the apprentice and then make a couple of constructs for the warband before I start on painting them. It'll be a slowish process as life is very busy but hopefully I'll get them posted on here as they get done.

Cheers for the support guys.

Wow! those bases really work. I would not have guessed that's how you'd made them. that little bit of sanding makes all the difference. good work (and idea filed away for later theft).
