Most of my painting at the moment is focused on uniting two loves - the world of 40k (in particular, the fanatics and fighters of the Imperium) and the rules of Pulp Alley. I have one or two campaigns planned for next year, and I'm beavering away now with those in mind.
Everything goes up on the blog, but I'll post the more interesting miniatures and the finished leagues here. The first of those is one I've just finished and am particularly proud of. Johann Tzel is a reliquarist, an expert in picking genuine relics from the mass of fakeries that beguile the devout but dim masses of the Imperium.
I'm especially happy with Tzel, as he started life as a Reaper Alchemist and ended up looking quite like the picture that inspired me.

Oh my, that is very nice work. Have you picked up pulp leagues yet? The new setting and weapon rules really help bring pulp 40K together.
-
Yes, I snapped it up pretty quickly. Loving the additions for different 'genres', will definitely be using them.
-
Oh this is gonna be good! Already liking the Reliquarist conversion!
-
Nice conversion, well done :)
-
Seconded.
Good eye, matching and tweaking that fig.
-
very nice work! great choice of figure to do your own thing with.
-
NICE!
-
Another blog to add to my list. Lovely conversion!

Another blog to add to my list. Lovely conversion!
For certain. Beautiful work on that :)

Just something small - a couple of cyber rats. They're a little crude, but they'll add some nice flavour to the table. Heroquest rats with guitar string tails and various bits box doodads.

Very characterful!
...Blue cherubs next? ;)

These are Warhammer Quest rats, though ;)

...Blue cherubs next? ;)
lol I'm not quite as wacky as cheetor, et al!
These are Warhammer Quest rats, though ;)
Thanks: I got it right on the blog, but once I got here my brain was addled by the heady atmosphere of LAF!
-
lol I'm not quite as wacky as cheetor, et al!
What surgery graduate do you imagine is spending his/her time knitting the rats nerves with bionic hardware?
And I'M the wacky one ;) lol
Great work by the way. I like the skull plate on the rat that has had brain surgery.
-
And I'M the wacky one ;) lol
Ahem. I have no comeback...so by way of distraction, more photos!
Axiom's superb governor from his Colony 87 range. Full of character, lots of fun to paint.
Ooh, those cloak checks look a bit sloppy when the figure is larger than life.
-
Ahem. I have no comeback...
I disagree, photos like that are a top notch comeback, well done. Such great figures those, nice job.
-
Lovely work, I like the colours you used and how this one turned out :)
-
Very striking scheme on your Governor! The gems are particularly nice :)
Like the base too. Fits him perfectly.
-
Very nice brushwork on these figures sir. I enjoy the free flowing pulp alley rules too and it is no means stuck to the pulp genre. I have found creating a new plot point table very helpful for keeping the narrative more in keeping with my Fallout/Firefly universe.
Its in BETA and a google doc if you would like to see.
Cheers
Matt
-
Thanks gents, glad you like him. Constable - I would be interested in seeing that. We don't often use those tables, but it would be great to see your ideas about plot points. Will pm you.
By the way, did you end up getting a Pulp Alley game going for MOAB? I used to get there while I was in Sydney some years back.
Edit: just saw your blog - terrain for the Pulp Alley games looks fantastic!
-
Thanks Bill, yeah we had a few games of PA there. I was mostly showing kids through the rules but it went quite smoothly.
I rather wish I could have a game with Mila and Dave, because I'm sure we are doing some stuff wrong, but it's enjoyable. And I really like the fact it has simple vehicle rules as well. Not many skirmish games have that level of vehicle access, from ponies to mechanical walkers and planes! You can have normal cars, (ala mad max 1) or cars with weapons (ala 40k) and everything in between. From our one test so far, characters generally go squish when hit by vehicles, at least the zombies did in our 2 lap 'circus' :D :D
Again perhaps I'm doing it wrong, but a few small house rules cover any holes and keep the game flowing pretty smoothly.
I appreciate your comment on the Google doc. A lot was based on the PA tables and the type of things they had there, but then other items were created from a 'what would a survivor be looking for' point of view. Perhaps for your space opera you could go somewhere in between? Also do as the rules suggest and roll on the table before the game starts, I forgot to do that at MOAB and it was a bit weird.
Cheers
Matt
-
Hi Matt,
Yes, the rules do cover a lot of stuff, which is really impressive: especially good for sci fi.
I'd actually forgotten the original plot point tables were set out that way! Long time since I've looked at them. But lots of good ideas in yours. At some stage I'll have to sit down and add in some uniquely 40k type stuff.
If you're ever in Brisbane, make sure you shoot me a message and we can get together for a game.
Bill.
-
Will do Bill!
I look forward to having a chat after you've had a game or two about your 40K modifications.
Cheers
Matt

Some great stuff in this thread.
One to watch!

Do you recognise this man? A strange hybrid of old and new, a painter's pain. Who is he?

Wasn't that guy having a power-armoured pint with a mate in one of the illustrations in the Rogue Trader rule book? Might be my memory playing tricks though. ;D
Great stuff on this thread mind, will be referring back to it when I start my own RT stuff at some point next year.
-
Wasn't that guy having a power-armoured pint with a mate in one of the illustrations in the Rogue Trader rule book? Might be my memory playing tricks though. ;D
If you think that's bad, the guy he's drinking with appears to be wearing a pair of power fists, and holding a lass rifle at the pub. Must be a tough crowd.
-
Spot on JollyBob. Glad you like them.
YPU - there I was thinking it was a bolter, but looking at it again I think you're right.

I picked up a box set of the new Frostgrave cultists with the plan to 40k-ify them. Here's the first guy. GW head on Frostgrave body.

Latest miniature for the project is a mechanicum bounty hunter.
He began life as a chaos cultist, with various mechanicus bits added.

Amazing work BSB!
More please :o

Thanks! I generally try to post the more interesting stuff I work on here: conversions or non-mainstream figures. I'm surprised this hasn't generated more comments! Bravo. 8) 8) 8)
-
You are doing quite a meritable work around those cultists, I love'em!
-
Lovely stuff! The Dark Vengeance cultists, AdMech bits and Frostgrave figures seem perfect for this kind of thing.
Regretting not getting in on the Colony 87 Kickstarter :(
-
Thanks gents, having fun with it.
Momotaro, I think they may be selling the figures again in conjunction with their upcoming kickstarter.

After months of painting and building, the first game at last! Our heroes - mechanicus operative, scout sniper and internal security trooper - are caught up in an unexpected chaos cult uprising.
They become part of a desperate last stand, facing wave after wave of chaos cultists.

Pulp Alley worked perfectly for the grim darkness of the far future. For plenty more photos and a full report, head over to: http://preacherbyday.blogspot.com/2016/01/the-last-stand-pulp-alley-game.html (http://preacherbyday.blogspot.com/2016/01/the-last-stand-pulp-alley-game.html)
-
Really cool. I've been looking forward to seeing the figures in action. It looks incredible and sounds like you had fun. Pulp Alley is definitely a versatile system and a good reason to get all manner of figures on the table.
-
I love it, I really need to give Pulp Alley a try into 40K, it apparently works perfectly. Cool game!
-
Thanks gents! Yes Suber, you should give it a crack - great set of rules.
-
I've built some walls! Nice modular walls. They can work for raised areas...
They work for rooms and corridors.
I've got to do more, but they're a good start, and I'm really happy with their versatility. Check out more on the blog: http://preacherbyday.blogspot.com/2016/02/scratch-built-sci-fi-walls-finished.html (http://preacherbyday.blogspot.com/2016/02/scratch-built-sci-fi-walls-finished.html)
-
Brilliant, very versatile. I love it :)
-
Nice walls mate, i'd say my favourites so far are those chaos cultist, I find the grubby buggers rather adorable 8) 8)
Happy gaming
Matt
-
Cheers Matt; they do have a certain grotesque charm!
-
I was after some crates for this project, but after looking around at the commercial options I decided I was to cheap to fork out the cash they go for, so I'd have to build my own. Here they are: balsa wood and cardboard. A bit slow and fiddly, but gloriously cheap!

They look really effective.
Great work!

Looks storebought to me ..... which means they are great! ;)

Great terrain!

I wanted a little droid for a scenario. I didn't have any suitable figures, so ransacked the bits box. I'd seen a few people use a head from the Sicarian infiltrators to good effect. I started with that and added legs.

Very cute!

cool

Somehow, someway I must steal this idea and add him to my droid/robot collection. I simply must, I say.
-
Please do: would love to see your take on it!
-
Something a little different this time - a bit of a sci fi dungeon crawl. Our heroes, tracked down and captured by chaos cultists, wake to find themselves locked in an empty room. What's on the other side of the door?

Fantastic, inspirational stuff.
-
Brilliant report. Great game!
Pulp Alley can be quite challenging in the "why won't you just die!" Department. My group has stopped playing leaders and only run a small band lead by a sidecick to even out the ability to wound. ;)
Cheers
Matt
-
Thanks guys, glad you like it.
@ Matt. Yes, and these guys were just Allies, but they simply refused to die. Interesting move dropping out the Leaders.
Bill.

Another game. Not part of the campaign this time. My son was keen to play something with the sci fi stuff...
The scribe shivered. He did not want to be here. Who could say what unquiet spirits lurked in this place of the ancient dead? And yet one could not refuse the summons of an Inquisitor. And this was no ordinary Inquisitor. This was Odo Lucipater: fervent, fearsome, fanatical. Throughout the sub-sector, the scourge of anything that smelled even vaguely of chaos.
Odo Lucipater had summoned him here. A terse description of one Tome of Regilus, a volume of ancient power. Scripts and sigils that he had studied. And so, pried from the comforts of desk and tome, he came.
As he walked towards the graveyard, he had the distinct feeling that he was not the only one arriving...
Will Inquisitor Lucipater recover the tome?
Will the judge heroically stem the tide of chaos vermin?
Will the assassin assassinate the other assassin, or vice versa?
Will the recordist uncover the ancient secrets of hair regrowth?

Just caught up on this. Great mix of Pulp Alley and 40K. Great looking minis and terrain.
-
A follow on from the last game: my son was keen to play again, so we continued the story.
In the previous game, Inquisitor Odo Lucipater successfully recovered the Tome of Regilus from its hiding place in an ancient cemetery. However, even with the aid of the a scribal expert, he has been unable to decipher the text of the tome.
While the scribe can do nothing with the text, he remembers meeting an old hermit while on a pilgrimage to the resting place of the sacred ginx-goad of Saint Cercaster. He and the hermit, one Jagarnath Astonaye, fell into conversation. The talk turned to great and glorious dreams and Astonaye told of life's passion to discover and translate the Tome of Regilus.
A series of inquiries trace Astonaye's last known whereabouts: the desert planet of Anx. The game begins with Lucipater's party at the spaceport, ready to head out and search for someone who might know where to find the hermit.
Unfortunately, someone has discovered their plan and they are not alone.
The Inquisitor and his crew must get out through the door opposite their starting point. The chaos cultists only need to stop them.
The rest, as they say, is on the blog: http://preacherbyday.blogspot.com/2016/03/spaceport-escape.html (http://preacherbyday.blogspot.com/2016/03/spaceport-escape.html)

Love these games. Really enjoying the RPG element. I need to do more of this myself.
Great characters, scenery, and minis. The Lamenters scout marine is really cool. Keep it coming!
-
Thanks, glad you like it. I really do enjoy these story-driven games.
-
Another thrilling episode in the saga of.....ehm, who is he again? I really enjoy these updates.

This is the good stuff!

Oh the cultist survivalist (bear grylls) went down this game :( hope he's back in the next installment! Great game report Bill!

Glad you're enjoying it guys: makes it worth posting to know that others will appreciate the game!

Thanks Matt! Yes, the irresistible force trumped the immovable object, but he'll be back.

The next game in our Sinastras IV campaign: fast forward forty-nine years and each of the heroes is in command of his own unit, taking the fight to the forces of anti-imperialness!
In this game, Romulus Decima, the mechanicus operative, has discovered a mysterious communications beacon. He must crack in and download signal traffic before the owners of the beacon persuade him to move on. This is the 'Race Against Time' scenario from the Pulp Alley rulebook.
Decima works on the beacon while his guards fan out to secure the area.
But what's this lurking in the shrubbery??
Necrons!! Things don't look good for our heroes: guardsman down everywhere.
Bad to worse: a Wraith attacks Decima at the beacon.

Fantastic game! :-* "Race Against Time" can be a very tricky scenario.
Can you share the stats for these two Pulp Alley leagues?
Can't wait to see more.
HAVE FUN
-
Thanks Dave! I don't have easy access to them, but I am doing up some 40k leagues for a show in Brisbane at the end of the month. I'll try to post them up once they're done. I have to say, I love looking through 'Pulp Leagues' and dreaming up ideas for characters.
-
We played the grand finale to our Pulp Alley campaign. The three players are guests of honour at a parade where one of them will be proclaimed 'Hero of the Imperium' by the governor.
One slight complication: one of the players is a traitor, mentally reprogrammed to assassinate the governor!

Feel free to copy away Gunbird. I've certainly done it with other people's ideas!

It's simply genius :-*ç
