Title: Ragnar's Farm - House no. 2 added 05/10/15
Post by: Mr.J on September 13, 2015, 06:25:24 PM
Last weekend I went to Border Reiver and as a bit of a panic purchase bought a bunch of dark age civilians (none of which have seen paint yet), a Warbases dark age house and some of their Soay sheep and some Renedra wattle fences.

Below is what I have done with them, the red house is from Warbases the other is scratchbuilt. The figure is Artizan, I call him Ragnar.

This is the first time I have ever really done anything like this in the way of scenery and I'm pretty chuffed with how they have turned out. I am looking at investing in a few more to populate my boards (although technically I don't own a board and my painting and gaming space/time is being reduced massively due to a my first baby being due in November).

I'm thinking about getting a nice backdrop organised but as I said my time is short at the moment, so please excuse the kitchen clutter, it's the best lit room in my house.

Comments are most welcome.

Wow! What a response. Thank you all for your comments. I've not really been painting much at the moment, my mojo seems to have disappeared but I thoroughly enjoyed making this.

I'm looking at doing another and might try to build up to a small settlement. I get the impression that scenery building gets quite addictive!

I have a couple of small ovens/kilns that came with my villagers, I think maybe a bakery might be up next. Eventually I might stretch to a small hall if my momentum keeps going, a big if.

How odd! Not sure why they went but they should be back and are now clickable for bigger images.

This is the next one, side by side with the other two. Just need some detailing and basing and it'll be finished. This time it's entirely scratch built.

Just out of curiosity, do the clickable images work better for people or so you prefer them bigger to begin with?

Thanks Bob and Tyrion, I've had such a manic week I haven't got anything done. I'm not usually particularly productive but it's been frustrating as I have been desperate to get cracking on this. I have been gathering ideas for future builds too.

It's so good too see Vikings gardening (and doing it nicely) instead of slaughtering people!  8)

Another nice Addition. I like the use of lolly sticks for walkways.

Clickable is just fine  :)
. I have been gathering ideas for future builds too.
Watch out..scratchbuilding  can get addictive... :) Itīs starts with one..then two, that Looks too balanced so a third, then a 4th..and before you know it....

Tell me about it. Now that I have the basic daub technique down I keep thinking of other stuff I could do, possible some basic wattle buildings, or planks, and then where to go with the roofing! I could go on and on with this.

I started with a plan to make around half a dozen medieval/18th Cent Imagi-nation buildings..now Iīve got  nearly 50  o_o lol

You have effectively convinced me that I need to build bases/mini-dioramas for my buildings like you have done.

Yes, what he said. :?
And I'm not about doing very nice dioramas as you guys, I play adventure skirmishes on 4-metres tables so my scratch-built works are not so nice, but... it's addictive... lol

Hello!

So Ragnar has upgraded. He now has two farm houses and a nice a-frame workshop. Not overly happy with the photos so might do some vanity shots when I get the time.

And here they all are together. I like the way I can reconfigure them to sit alongside each other.

Please do feel free to comment and critique them.

If anyone has any suggestions for buildings I could make to add to my farmstead please throw them out there and if they take my fancy I just might make them.

I would if I could find anything wrong with them! They look splendid to me and the addition of the extra detail really makes the farmstead look  like exactly that.

BTW nothing wrong with the pic site! I would consider adding (in bold type) that you can click on the pics as sometimes people in their haste don't have the time to read all of a post.

Darrell.

Accessory wise, I'd do a log pile, a dung heap, more fences and maybe some more livestock too.

Some kind of mill or lumber yard might be quite nice. Or any kind of workshop really. A small palisade or earthwork might be good too, but probably only if you're doing a bigger hall.

Oh, and some kind of animal skull above a doorway!
