I finally got one of my Frostgrave minis completed. I've been distracted by This is Not a Test (awesome) but I grabbed a few models and set to work. This won't get me any closer to playing but when I saw the barbarian from the unveil to models others have painted on these forums I had to paint one. Beautiful model, iconic and great fun to put a brush to. As I painted the fig nostalgia set in and I had to break and watch a couple scenes from Conan the Barbarian (1982). Hoping to share some tales of high adventure in Felstad in the near future; Or at least a few models and a bit of terrain :) .

Lovely job. He's one of my favourite official figs!
-
Very nicely done. I love the limited palette you've used. Look forward to seeing more.

Great painting work. I expect to see more Copplestone´s figures in this range, they are the best, IMHO.
-
I should have ordered one. He is epic. Lovely paint job!!

I have been hobby butterflying so even though I haven't completed any models I have a fair number multi genre minis near completion. I have really been lagging on Frostgrave so here is an update.
I really liked the Northstar Sigilist and apprentice. I like them almost as muchas the barbarian. Not as much but I actually plan on using the Sigilist out of the gate. Both models need some highlights, embellishments and final clean up but I'm happy with where they are headed. Like the barbarian I really like the look of the models so the only alteration I made to the figure was cutting them off the tab bases and replacing it with greenstuff flagstone.
My treasure hunter is a reaper model. I couldn't say no to the map, telescope, pick and shovel. This model has a little further to go than my magical duo but should be ready to enter the frozen city (woefully "under" construction :( ) before it ever gets built.

Great additions. Good find with the treasure hunt - a real adventurer feel. Thanks for sharing

These are very nice. Looking forward to this develop.

Looking great!

Digging the nuns.
-
I love your barbarian, perhaps the best I've seen !
A band of nuns is a good idea !
-
I agree, a great job on the Barbarian! I need to add that figure to my next order. :D

I finished the Sigilist and her apprentice. In the final stretch I got a bit sloppy and made some messes particularly on the wizard and her embroidered robe. I'm happy with the result because I spent a couple hours on each but that why I paint reasonably nice tabletop quality models and don't chase Golden Demons or love on CMON :) . I might repaint the lower part of the Sigilist's robe some day but not today; When I'm on task I can be meticulous until I get bored but I'm never a perfectionist.
I prefer the apprentice. I did a better job of her and wasn't frustrated as I painted her first. I painted them in tandem to save paint and lead with her. I enjoyed the simplicity of her attire. By the time I hit the wizard I was bored with the palette and had a mountain of obnoxious gew-gaws to frig with that the other model wasn't packing. If the was one thing I could have suggested the sculptor do differently it would have been to cast the scroll separately. Just when I thought I had the eye detail lined up perfectly the damn thing jostled my brush and made a mess I became less and less interested in tidying up.
The other reason I, "called her done" was the snow on the base. It still hasn't set yet but I mixed up some gloss gel medium, a bit of white paint and some "diamond dust" (a powdered glass product). I'm really curious how the stuff will look once it dries and if it will be a good way to embellish future models and terrain.
-
Love them both. When I put gold on (metallic or no) I typically block it out with a brown first (old Snakebite Leather is a favourite, or Vermin Brown) to give the edges some contrast on the cloth.
The face on the Apprentice is particularly nice. Great job on the subtle colouring. :)

I'm anticipating the arrival of my northstar summoner so I was looking for a big demon for him to summon. I managed to work out a really sweet trade for a mountain of classic lead :) and one of the models was a marilith. It's a fairly recent reaper sculpt of the classic D&D demon. I thought it suited the summoner because I get an arabian nights/ middle eastern vibe from his garb. I wanted to test an olive coloured paint triad I picked up recently that I was hoping would be appropriate for the summoning duo.
Looking at the results in a photo I think I have to go back and detail the scales a little better and restore some of the wash I had done on the golds because it was my first trial of vallejo liquid golds and the isopropyl based paint seemed to defy the laws of physics as I understood them. Not really but it flowed more freely than the acrylics I'm accustomed to and slithered into the recesses even though I was fairly lighthanded with the brush. Those are the weak points but I'm really happy with the skin and the way it plays with the blue green of the scales.

Nice mini!
-
A quick snapshot of the WIP. I was so close to done but ran out of time. I'll post nice shots once he is based and cleaned up.
-
Such a great model. I always imagine he's summoning by playing castanets and doing the mambo.
-
I completed the summoner model. I like him but I'm happier that I was able to start fleshing out my Frostgrave setting. If you want quick pics here they are. If you like ramblings on worldbuilding here is the link to the blog entry; http://horridvoidspace.blogspot.ca/2015/10/frostgrave-rockstar-among-wizards.html (http://horridvoidspace.blogspot.ca/2015/10/frostgrave-rockstar-among-wizards.html)

Beautiful brushwork! Inspiring! ;D
-
That Summoner is probably one of my favorite of the original wizard figures. I think you did an excellent job on him, too! The pattern on his jacket is really well done and adds a lot to the appearance of the figure. :)
-
Very nice, particularly the peacock feather 'eyes' on his robe.
-
Will he buy my unused Gold... FOR CASH!? :-*
-
Really nice painting, classic in a good way and technically very well executed ! :-*
-
Excellent look for the summoner. Classic Hammer movie look. Nice jacket :D
-
Stunning brushwork! :o
You have inspired me to collect some of my own Frostgrave figures.
I love the reaper figures! :-*

@Hendrid
Hammer film? Awesome! That is a high compliment. I'm thinking of an aging Boris Karloff in one of their productions :) .
EDIT
****I think I was wrong on Karloff in Hammer. I may have been thinking of a Roger Corman one. My favorite Hammer film isn't actually a Hammer film. The Wicker Man came just a little too late but it should have been :) .
@MaleGriffin
Cool! I'm looking forward to seeing your models. I love the Reaper ranges too. There are so many awesome model makers across the pond the solid North American ones are sometimes overshadowed. There is some amazing talent that traveled from Ral Partha, Grenadier and then into Reaper. I don't care where models come from as long as they look cool.
Speaking of old Ral later this evening (morning) I snap a pic of an AD&D construct from 1988.
@sundayhero
Thanks. It's an apt description of my style. I started painting in the 80s and didn't get any instruction; testor's oils and straight pins for painting eyes :P. I got my first instruction from Citadel's red pamphlet that found it's way into a local hobby shop in the 90s. By the turn of the millennium I was somewhat set in my ways. I work with new products as I discover them but I never picked up the finer points of more technically accomplished painting skills. If only I'd been ten years younger :) .

Like the treasure hunter model. Very nice find.
Really love the detail on the bottom of the Sigalists dress. Top notch painting all round.

I started building some terrain for Frostgrave. Somewhere along the line in my "canon" the frozen city took on a Greco-Roman vibe. I liked the idea of the wizards and their henchmen being descendants of more primitive cultures that had grown on the shoulders of a mysterious giant and only after the thaw can they begin to discover the wonders of a lost antiquity.
I ended up settling on Hadrian's heliocaminus as a starting point. I think it was a bath house/ ancient hot tub but I liked the dome and thought it would look pretty cool if I could make something like that. It's not 100% done but it's prettty close and just needs some final detailing and winterizing. I thought I`d post here to bring my thread back into the game, keep my clutter down and give anyone interested a chance to chime in and help me make the piece as cool as possible.
The plan is to build a fountain that can sit in the interior`s courtyard. The ruin is large relative to most of the things I have planned so I thought it would make a decent centerpiece for the well of memory and sorrow scenario
-
Just caught up with your blog and I have to say I really like what you've doing!
Looking forward to seeing how your terrain develops - the domed ruin is a great start.
-
That's a lovely piece of terrain - bravo!
-
Time to dust off my old thread. I prefer to keep it all in one big clump than spraying my projects all over the place. I haven't posted on Frostgrave in months but I've actually been getting things done. Things are in the works to play locally starting at the end of January so I've been scrambling to paint up randoms and scenario objectives. I guess I have to finish my warband too but there is still plenty of time.
I got sidetracked by a Christmas painting deadline. My nieces started playing Dungeons and Dragons this year so I painted up some representations of their characters. I played RPGs and started painting models before I got into wargaming so maybe these figures will eventually end up in the frozen city if they become interested. I'll be delivering these tomorrow. I'll try and get some pics up of stuff I've been putting together soon.
-
good paintjob on the miniatures, especially the jewel! what brand are they?
-
The thief is a Reaper and the mage is Dark Sword.
-
Stunningly beautiful paint job on them.
-
Got a really sweet deal on a giant model when the retailer did a sale. Was able to get back to him following the Christmas deadline so now wizards should expect big trouble, big rocks and big mullets in Felstadt.
-
Very nice paintjobs, especially your fleshwork is popping out as classy! :)
-
Cool! 8) I really like the face on that!
-
Aye, fantastic character to the face! Brilliant :D
-
Have some adds for the thread. Some pieces for scenarios, wandering monster and mercs. Now I better get working on my warband.
-
Very nice work - bravo! My favourite is the gargoyle statue - menacing but with loads of character.
-
@jp1885 He is actually one of my favorites too. He's one of the old 80s Ral Partha AD&D models. I have enough statues that I was thinking about switching him out of the scenario role and giving him a frozen fountain of his own to preside over. A few years back someone on a Mordheim forum had the same model, sculpted him a little cock and had him filling the fountain with it. I just like the idea of flash freezing/ capturing the poor little guy in mid stream because it might make for a characterful vignette.
-
sculpted him a little cock and had him filling the fountain with it.
Now that's something I never expected to read when I got up this morning! lol
-
Very nice work - the statues and the genie are my favs, I think.
-
Just found this thread... :-* :-*
Filled with great stuff. I really like the official Barbarian. That paint scheme is perfect.
The statues are amongst my favorites too.
-
Wow! Thanks for dredging this up.
Some really motivating painting!
