Title: In Which the Science Officer Gets Riddled by Ray Guns
Post by: Operator5 on January 09, 2007, 03:20:54 PM
I ran a playtest of the Fantastic Worlds game last night. Four of us sat down to blast away at one another while searching for the plans to the Doomsday Cannon.

I played Brigade Games Alien Greys as Little Green Men. There was also a group of Drantakh from Regiment Games, some sci-fi Adventurers from Heresy, and the Babylon 5 humans from Mongoose.

VERY poor die rolling for me all night. Tried to shoot three times, two of the three times my energy pistols overheated. My robot, hit once, goes out of control, finally gain control, hit again, he has to reboot. FINALLY get him into combat with some Grade 1s and he can't do anything but break their arms and legs. Very Unsatisfying for me. :-)

The Drantakh player however had a field day shooting up everyone. His space camels could do no wrong with one exception. They could not seem to bring down one of the Heresy Sci Fi adventurers who had more holes in him than a swiss cheese wheel (and yet he refused to go down).

In the end it was officially a three way tie as three pieces of the plans went to three different players, hwoever we gave the nominal win to the Drantakh player because he had the most kills.

It was a great game and everyone had a lot of fun.

Looks like a fun game setup. So all figures can have laser pistols? Do you program robots like you did in the old Rogue Trader days? I honestly don't know, because Marc is hoarding all the secrets to FW.

I'll reply here instead of taking up Marc's and your valuable e-mail space that would be better spent discussion pirates.

I also have never seen two people's Drantakhs painted the same color. That's kind of cool. Nice job on the LGM space suits, too. And was that the Metal Menace?

also I hope, like Pete, that you must program robots like in the  old Rogue Trader .
You play the Game on a bigger Table will that be normal in Fantastic Worlds ?

After looking at the Aliens I tink I must macke a Mars Attacks Game

Robots have been one of the few sticky widgets while designing these rules. I want to strike a balance between them being playable and not just being characters with medal skin.

We are getting very close, and I think everyone will enjoy the results.

Programming won't be like Rogue Trader. I have a copy of those command flow-charts and have played with that idea, however the Rogue Trader type is unwieldy.

What we'll come up with (and you'll see a lot of it Super Science Tales) should be fast enough to play and still provide for robots to act like pulp robots.

As for laser pistols, there are two types. The cheaper and less powerful is the Energy Pistol. The more expensive is the Ray Gun. These correspond to the "Light" gun and Ray gun of the Flash Gordon comic strip.

I'm glad that it won't be as cumbersome as the Rogue Trader days. Unless you spent all weekend doing really elegant programming, your robot could be dumber than a bag of bricks.
