Title: Talavera 1809 afternoon attack in 28mm. New Buckingham Historical Wargamers
Post by: Jabba on September 21, 2015, 01:08:11 PM
Last Saturday the New Buckenham Historical Wargammers refought the afternoon attack by the french at the Battle of Talavera in 1809. The figures were 28mm and the rule set used was Black Powder to 2/3 ranges.

To make things manageable the french regiments were reduced to two battalions each, except where they were a single regiment brigade, and stats adjusted to compensate. We lack full units in correct period uniforms so post 1812 made up a large portion of the forces as well as some interlopers as spanish line cavalry.

We decided the limits of the battlefield would be the artillery redoubt to the south and the hills of Sierra de Segurilla to the north.

The result, due to some poor dice rolling, not very historical. The spanish held on doggedly on both flanks while the british centre was pierced by french column and dragoons so no title for Wellesley this time.

A personal thanks from me to carojon for the pointers etc.

Same again next year with more Spanish and correct uniforms, we hope.

Number of figures involved, based for Shako II ruleset as main rules the club uses for 28mm Napoleonics.

French:
41 Battalions of Infantry (18 figs each)
12 Regiments of Cavalry (9 figs each)
10 Artillery pieces with crew
Approx 20 skirmisher stands (up to 4 figs each)
Command stands
Casualty markers

British:
22 Battalions of Infantry (18 figs each)
2 Battalions of Guards (24 figs each)
6 Regiments of Cavalry (9 figs each)
12 Rifle Company stands (3 figs each)
4 Artillery pieces with crew
Approx 10 skirmisher stands (up to 4 figs each)
Command stands
Casualty markers

Spanish:
7 Battalions of Infantry (18 figs each)
1 Battalion of Grenadiers (12 figs)
3 Artillery pieces with crew
2 Regiments of Cavalry (9 figs each), guest appearance by Dutch/Belgians in bicorns.
Command stand
Casualty markers

So in total around 1840 figures all told.
All totals are approx correct I think :)

Shipka
The infantry bases are approx 50mm deep so that should give you a rough size for the roads and river sections we used from the club's general use stock.

Hi Tony,
Well done to you and the chaps at the New Buckingham Historical Wargamers, that is an excellent looking game, with what looks like a hard fought action. The pictures and captions really capture the look of the battle and is a credit to you and the club.
I look forward to more
Cheers
JJ
