Title: Fantasy figs and terrain for SobH, KOW etc - 2nd cottage Finished!
Post by: 6mmfan on September 23, 2015, 09:29:33 AM
Hi guys

I've been chipping away at my large collection of Reaper Bones figures and also some GW Skaven. I have about 150 Reaper Bones figures, and about the same number of Skaven so this thread will go on for a while.

Reaper Bones Bugbears
Very cool figures with lots of character, and I converted one of the guys to have a spear instead of a club. Some of the detail was a bit soft and I cut off most of the studs on the armour as they were poorly defined and too hard to paint. Apart from that they were good to paint, but every time I looked at the I saw something else that needed painting! Eventually I got there and I'm happy with how they came out. I intend to use these as a Songs of Blades and Heroes warband but they might get used in my KOW skaven army

Great painting! Love the shading, the traditional color schemes, and hey, I just love bugbears, the heros of goblindom.

Thanks guys

Next is a sample Skaven figure from the Island of Blood boxed set. A lovely figure and more in the style/pose of the older Skaven figures. I tried out some colours and techniques like rusty armour/weapons to see if it would work for an entire army and a quicker way to paint. I like the finished result but the picture doesn't show it well.

Reaper Bones Wizard

This was from the first KS I believe and I swapped it for some Bones2 KS figures. Its a great figure with well defined sculpting but a BIG figure. I had just received some new paint colours and decided to try them out on the figure.

The basing on both these figures need some finishing as I cant decide to go with a basing scheme for down in a dungeon or on the tabletop.

Looking good so far. Coincidentaly I also just painted a set of bugbears to use as Ogre Berserkers in KoW. How do you plan to use them?

I'll use them as stand-ins for Rat Ogres in a Ratkin army. Maybe in the future I will do a Orc army so they will be good for that I think.

Awesome, and I too, like the Tre Manor Bugbears (have some sitting on my table half-painted right now).  The best bugbears Reaper has.  I may pick up one or two more.  Also, they're big fellas, so I think they make the most of Bones material (which suffers as figures get smaller).  A quick dip in boiling then cold and they're solid.

Thanks guys, I will try to update this regularly. :o

I started on some terrain as I enjoy making terrain (more than painting figures) and although I have lots of ambitious plans, I thought I'd start with some simple walls. I also wanted to try making stone walls brick by brick, which is something I have seen here at the LA site.

Stone Walls

For the walls I used some foam from a model airplane shop as getting pink/blue foam is hard here in NZ. Plasticard was used for the bases.

First I cut up some strips and lots of individual bricks

Next I put them into an ice-cream container along with some scoria rocks (volcanic) which are quite sharp, and shook it hard. This dented the "stones" and rounded the corners a bit.

Next I glued them on using PVA one layer at a time. I sprinkled a bit of fine sand over the walls while the PVA was still wet,  so it went into the cracks in places.

Then I painted them a classic grey colour and followed that with lots of drybrushing. i also added some brown ad green washes but you can barely see them. Finally I covered the base with caulk and flock and some bushes I made. Also I added some patches of moss using some green flock to the stone work

Finished walls

That's take time but the result look realistic. For the texture I use a ball of aluminium and roll it on the wall.

Love your walls 6mmfan, they look great !

Hi all

I've started work on a classic fantasy gaming piece, the Graveyard. The idea is the have a medium sized graveyard (about 200mm squarish) with a few gravestones, a mausoleum and and old twisted tree.

Using the same techniques as the walls I have constructed these stone by stone and it took a while to make and glue the stones all down. I added some details on top of the pillars and for these I used some large pinboard pins and a couple of gargoyles from an Armourcast bridge.

There has been some more progress on the graveyard.

I've added a stone pathway made from stone with lots of different shapes and sizes, cut out from cardboard. This was pretty tedious cutting each stone out and I won't try it again. To make the path I smeared some PVA onto the base and glued the stones down randomly, and sprinkled some sand into the cracks between the stones.

Also I have painted the walls grey (the same as the walls featured in an earlier post) and almost finished the mausoleum.

I've finished some skeletons but the photos didn't come out well so I try and again post in a day or so along with the mausoleum .

Another way to make the path in the graveyard is as  follows:-
1) Mix up some Miliput (two part epoxy putty)
2) Roll it into lots of little balls of different sizes (I find it near impossible to roll them to a uniform size, so this is easy)
3) Gently place the balls along the route of the path (almost like laying crazy paving)
4) Gently push down on the balls. Use a spoon/ pallet knife etc. if you want a smooth surface, or your finger for 'slabs' with a bit of texture (which dry brushing picks up nicely)

The 'balls' squidge out to fill the gaps, but still leave a line where the 'slab' meets another.

Hi all

Some of the first Bones figures I painted were (appropriately) Skeletons. The first batch of Reaper Bones I skeletons are pretty poor but I have found the Bones 2 KS much nicer figures and more interesting poses.

Spearmen
Nice figure and pose. I have gone for a rusty and tarnished look on the spear and the Wargames Factory shield. The shading on the bones looks a bit harsh but apply the 2ft rule and they look much better  :D

Bowmen
I added a bowstring, a pouch and a WF quiver to the figure as it is a bit plain otherwise.

And I just noticed I need to tidy up the basing!

I like them and they are cheap army filler but for skirmish they are average. I have pimped a few with new heads, weapons, shields and extras, and it makes big difference.

Hi guys

A small update as work continues on my graveyard terrain piece

Mauseleom

The was my first crack at scribing stonework into a building so I thought start with something small. I made a basic cardboard frame and glued the foam onto it. The door is made from balsa, card for the iron bits, some finger nail decorations for the rivets and a small bead attached with a pin for the door handle. The roof was made from card and I added an iron strip along the top made from some cross stitch. I added a cross from a GW shield to the front.

'Normal' or 'human' sized bones aren't top notch if you look for individual skirmish or showcase models, but I think 6mmfan has just convinced me that they are fully passable for massed combat games (like GoB, for which I am almost running out of old GW skellies for my Lords of Undeath army).

Clean up moldlines, spray white, block in details, apply wash in desired tone, and Bob's your (dead) uncle!.

Hi guys

I've been working more on my Graveyard and have finished most of the details for it now. Next step is to stick all the bits down and begin the basing.

Some bits and pieces for the graveyard
- Implements, wheelbarrow and gravestones (which could do with some black wash). The gravestones are mostly from Renedra and the wheelbarrow etc are from the Renegade ACW range IIRC
(http://i1022.photobucket.com/albums/af342/6mmwargamin/28mm%20fantasy/graveyard7_zpslgptldq6.jpg)

Finished the Mausoleum. I'm very happy with this ad its looks better in real life (not sure why the colours are a bit off and the washes dont show up very well in the photos)

And I painted the pathway grey, followed by a light brown wash. Its much easier to paint this now instead of after all the peices are in place.

Old tree
This was made from from wire and then covered with caulk and fine sawdust. I'll add some coconut fibres for the smaller branches. I'm going to cut the bottom and twist the wires to make some roots.

Skaven Clanrats
I have finished the first batch of Clanrats and it took me a while to get a technique I liked but I am very happy how these came out. I went for quite bright colours for the clothing and a rusty look on the armour and weapons. Its my first attempt in a long time painting shield patterns so I kept it pretty simple. Although they are for Kings of War I will use some for dungeoning so I painted them better than they needed to be.

There is a Grave Digger, Monk and Fighter/Paladin. Very cool looking figures but hard to paint as the bones details can be a bit soft and hard to figure out what the details are. So a bit more effort but I'm very happy with how good they came up.

Hi all

I finished a GW Skaven Assassin. A beautiful figure and a pleasure to paint. Very happy with how well this came out.

Thank you. The clanrats are from the "Island of Blood" boxed set. I dont think they have been replaced but I dont keep up to date with GW releases.

This is a good guide on Skaven clanrats through the ages

I've been working on some wildlife lately and finished another 3 Reaper Bones figures

Wolf (for Frostgrave)

It looks better in the flesh than the pictures. Nice model and I like the slightly threatening pose.

Giant Rats
These are cool figures and they look disgusting with the sores and hairless bodies.  For the sores I used some Tamiya clear red which is a bit glossy, over the some pink. I have some very small finger round nail decorations so I will add these to some other Skaven figures and paint sores on them as well (probably on the plague monks).

No its a Conflix ruin. A very nice model. I just based it and gave it some washes and a drybrush and added a tree made from a root.

I picked up a new Orc village recently. I didn't know what it was until afterwards but I found out it is one of the old GW hard foam series they made. Its nicely detailed and I'm pretty happy as it only cost me $11 NZ

A couple of spikes are missing and I think I will replace the orcish statue with something more generic.

Thank you. The clanrats are from the "Island of Blood" boxed set. I dont think they have been replaced but I dont keep up to date with GW releases.

A lot of the skaven range was updated in this style, by Seb Perbett, barring various bits and pieces, most notably rat ogres and night/gutter runners. The clanrats from the Island of Blood starter set are basically the same as the clanrat regiment box, but the IoB rats have attached shields and slightly different command trio. (Only place to get the Seb Perbett rat ogres was the IoB box too, which is now OOP! Shame. Although they've been replaced by the bigger, much more cybernetic 'stormfiends')

Completed Graveyard

This is finally finished and and I'm very happy with how it has come out.

I textured the base with caulk/grit and then flocked it with some different types of flock. I finished it off with some light airbrushing on the flock and bottom of the walls. I added a open grave and I might add a removeable skeleton from Wargames Factory, in the open grave. I added some dead leaves which were ground up from actual leaves.

The tree was covered with caulk and some cut up coconut fibres, which were glued onto the branches. Then I painted the tree and spray-glued the ends of the branches, and added some crushed dead leaves to the ends. Finally I sprayed it again with glue and a little bit of Noch olive coloured leaves.

I didn't want to mount the tree permanently onto the base mostly for transportation reasons, so I came up with an idea to keep the tree separate. The tree has all the roots bent outwards to provide a bit of a base and around the base where the tree is mounted, I glued a piece of hoop shaped wire down. The idea is that the tree will slide under the wire and that will stop it moving or falling over. I disguised the wired by spraying it brown and sprinkling a mix of flock on it and on the ground around the base of the tree.

Reaper Bones Stone Giant
I painted this model up as a normal Giant before I realised it was a Stone Giant (I found out after searching for images to help paint some of the details) ! Anyway, it is a great model that has painted up very well. Its not obvious that is meant to be a stone giant.

Something went a bit funny with the paint as it cracked in the recesses (perhaps I forgot to wash it and there was still some residue). I went over the flesh again but with the same results only slightly less noticeable.

Progress has slowed down with the Christmas season approaching however i have found some time to for some new items.

Stone Circle
I found these in a box of old stuff. They are from some old 25mm Grenadier boxed sets from a "Giant Club" they released in the 80s. These were some of the first wargames figures I brought as I could go to the local book/toy shop and buy them. I sold the Giants off (which I now regret) but kept some of the bits and pieces they came with. So I based them up on some washers and repainted them. Nice, simple and useful.

Well
I wanted to make a well as a unit filler for my future Skaven army and based this on a 60x60mm base, but I like the well a lot and I will use it as a stand-alone piece instead. The stone part was made the same way as my earlier stone walls and the roof is made from card tiles. The supports are Balsa wood and I initially stuck on some card for metal supports but then I peeled them off and will readd them later (if you were wondering what the funny card bits are).

Hi all

I've finished a few more walls and this batch has a bit more variety with the designs. The techniques I used are the same as on page 1 of this thread, and for the gate I made it from balsa wood. These have come out great and they give me a decent amount of walls now (over 3ft)

I'm back after some holidays and much consumption of wine. After dipping my toes into the proverbial fantasy terrain making water, I've decided to jump in and start something bigger.

A lot of my fantasy inspiration comes from the terrain making articles in the old White Dwarfs and GW making terrain books. So I've decided to start with a classic building I first saw in WHFB 3th edition - the abbey of La Maisontaal.

I tracked down the Citadel journal online which has the original scenario and card printout. Based on this I have started a slighter larger version but with the same shape.

I got some free time so I cut the basic shapes out of foamboard and this was pretty quick. I made the corners so they overlap each other (kind of a half-lap joint) to give it some more strength and made the internal part larger so I can figures inside if I want.

I made the abbey ground's walls and ruined tower, and I plan to keep these separate and modular, for storage purposes and so they can be used for other things

Next I started adding card to the window and door frames for the stone detailing. I cut some square holes for the exposed timber beams, and I added a ramp to the side of the abbey (which looks like some sort of delivery entrance). Also some supports were added as the building has 2 levels.

And then work began on the roof for the enclosed part of the abbey. The roof will have card tiles and I wanted a strong structure so I used some black card, which the tiles will be glued onto. Also I started on the wooden beams but I didnt really think this through and didnt cut them long enough so I had to add extra pieces. Also I dont know how I will be able to remove the roof!  :?

Aside from my mistakes I really like how this is working out, and it will be useful of large battle and skirmish
gaming.

EDIT: I just noticed in the photo I found from the WHFB rules there is a another building on the left, which is not part of the original model!

Hi all

Some more progress on the Abbey and I have finished all the detailing apart from the roof and the gatehouse. I spent a few nights in front of the TV cutting and gluing all the bits and pieces on and adjusting the design as I go.

I added some wooden interior details to the ruined part of the abbey and late I will add a stone floor and some debris.

The roof came out really well and I spent a bit of time making sure it fitted tightly into the slots I had cut. Then I realised that it would not be removeable so I had to cut the foam board away and glue it onto the roof between the beams.

Next up I will give the buildings and walls a stone texture and then glue them together. Then I will add some stones to the corners of the buildings which helps covers the joins and gives a new effect like in the picture above. Also i'll finish tiling the roof.

Some more progress on the abbey. I've finished gluing all the stone work on (apart from the main gate) and i textured the wall. I cut up the bases and made them separate and interlocking so I can store it easier, and use the pieces separately (hard to see in the pictures). I have started on a floor in the ruined section using a GW movement tray and I will add some broken stones and debris. All I have left to do is the doors and windows, debris and whatever extra details I add along the way.

Hi all

I've been away as it our summer holidays here, so lots of sun and beaches :-)

I have finished the construction of the abbey. I added some windows and doors and other details. The windows are made from balsa with fly net mesh and the doors are balsa with green stuff hinges and brass handles. I also added a shield motif on the buildings using a GW Empire shield design.

The floor has been modeled with some damage and I added pieces of polystyrene to the floor where the rubble went.

The abbey finished (without rubble)

The gatehouse with abbey design

Rubble
This was all the leftover pieces of card, balsa and foam board used to make the model. Normally it would go in the rubbish but I kept it to use for rubble.

And the completed La Masiontaal with rubble added

I wanted it to have a decent amount of rubble, which I prefer to some of the smaller amounts I see on models. When I paint the rubble I will mix PVA glue into the base coat to help keep the rubble down.

Alright so I finished this piece finally!  :)

I'm pretty stoked how it came out and I can't wait to use it. I think it is reasonably true to the original and it will make a great center piece for a game.

I painted it with craft paints and weathered it with washes, modelling powders and an airbrush. The roof needs a bit of gentle bending to make it fit better but otherwise it came out better than I hoped.

Lots of pictures

Thanks guys. Yeah it too a bit of time especially the all details(the basic structure was quick though).

Next up I will make some simpler White Dwarf inspired cottages. I also really want to make a tavern (on the right). Does anyone know more information about it? I have some pictures from the 3rd edition rulebook and the GW making terrain book but not much else.

But first I have some new figures finished, lurking in the ruins

I've started on some stuff for Frostgrave to go with my random assortment of adventurers.

Frostgrave markers
Scratch built from various things such as GW shield patterns, a gravestone, skaven bits and so on

Thief
A Reaper bones figure. Nice pose but average sculpt and the some the fine details (like the face were hard to pick out). I went a bit overboard on the shading on the cloak but it stands out!

Ice Giant
Another Reaper Bones figure and a fantastic model. Very pleased with how this came up and it was a joy to to paint.

I've got some more Frostgrave stuff on the painting bench such as some Imps, demon and some more adventurers on the way

The abbey is another lovely model!

Rubble
This was all the leftover pieces of card, balsa and foam board used to make the model. Normally it would go in the rubbish but I kept it to use for rubble.

"Normally it would go in the rubbish...."  The big problem with this hobby - you can use everything and should not throw anything away.

Hi all

I've finished a couple more figures for Frostgrave and photographed them hanging outside my Abbey

Female apprentice

Another Reaper Bones figure which has come up very nicely. Lovely sculpt but the casting was not great. I replaced the staff as the original was a bit of a blobby. The new staff is part of a GW undead standard and the crystal ball is a bead (which i left as is) and it looks very good.

War dog
A Ral Partha figure I had in my collection. A very cool looking figure which unfortunately the painting and photos don't show! Great model.

I've finished off another handful of Reaper Bones figures.

Imps
First is some is Imps which are very cool figures with lots of character and fun to paint

Adventurer with bow
A typical heavily laden figure from Reaper with lots of bits to paint. Apologies for the poor photo.

The last few figures I posted (including this adventurer) I haven't been very happy with the flesh and the faces in general. I'm going back repainting the faces and painting the eyes and the lips, as they look too plain otherwise. So I will repost a few figures with the improvements.

Cheers

I managed to photograph some more figures. This Barbarian has been on the painting table for a loonng time due to me having issues with the crappy casting and some undercoat problems (which were never fully solved)

I converted the figure the original had a tiny head and the axe was pretty poor. So I added a GW head and a Wargame factory shield along with a GW shield pattern. I also green stuff parts of the cloak again to cover the crappy casting. Aside from the issue with the undercoat still seeping through, the figure looks great and painting the eyes really lifted the model. So a good result!

While I'm painting figures I've been working on some small terrain pieces which are useful in skirmish games like Frostgrave and SoBH. They are not based as I might use them for dungeons or add them to other bases.

Water troughs
These are just made from Balsa wood and filled with resin water with a little bit of brown ink added. Nice and simple but effective.

The other trough was made using spare bits from my collection and the water pipe is actually a 1/72 Panther exhaust!

Here are some other pieces I finished. These are just straight Reaper Bones pieces that I painted. The 2 statues and fountain were mounted on washers and blended into the blend with some putty.

Nice models and good value.

Statues (useful for dungeoning our general fantasy scenery)

Time to catch up on my progress with the Skaven I've pained in the last couple of months.

3 of the older metal Gutter Runners (out a unit of 10 I am painting). Lovely models and I'm a big fan of the older Skaven models.

A packmaster from the Island of Blood set. Some nice detailing but I find the definition of the fur very poor. I might start adding some green stuff to these guys to match the fur on the older metal models. I'm currently painting the hero from the IOB set and cant get the fur looking good.

Lots of progress with the Skaven but then again, there is a lot more to paint! I still have more to photograph and post as this is my main painting focus at the moment.

I finished the the last 4 Gutter Runners to make a 10 man units and the last 5 Clan rats to make a 20 figure unit of them!

This thread is fantastic!

You're noticing a lot of the same issues that I've encountered with Reaper Bones. It's a great material for larger monsters and beasties, but on smaller, more delicate figures it creates serious issues. I've started to steer clear of it for all but the biggest figures. Happily that's where its overall economy comes in handy. Bones figures are so cheap!

Anyway, let me be the first to encourage you to do MORE TERRAIN after this bout of Skaven sickness has left your body.  :D

Thank you. Yes I want to return to making more terrain very soon. I'm planning some classic GW style cottages and other buildings.

Meanwhile I've been working on some Skaven conversions and I have converted a few figures into characters.

I got these Derros figures as part of a Reaper Bones kicsktarter and they didnt really appeal to me. However I thought they would make good Skaven filler troops as they are a similar size so i kept them. Luckily the Reaper bones is a softish plastic and is easy to convert.

Skaven Sorcerer (Grey Seer)
A easy conversion with a new head, tail and spare Skaven and Kroot bits. My green stuff skills on the horns is not brilliant, but the figure has come out great.

Before
(http://i1022.photobucket.com/albums/af342/6mmwargamin/28mm%20fantasy/77331_w_1_zpsflcmesb8.jpg)

Skaven Leaders
I am a bit short on Leader for my Clanrats and being a cheap bugger, I decided to convert these to heroes. With some careful slicing and dicing I finished up with these two figures. One has a Gutter runner cloak while the other is made from green stuff which is hard to see well. The rest is spare from my Skaven plastics. Unfortunately I noticed when i was editing the photos that the dude on the right has his arms glued on the wrong side of the body!  :o

More Skaven conversions
These are the older Skaven (4th edition I think) which I picked second hand and they are great figures with lots of character. But there is only one pose so I decided to try and modify some of them, as I have lots of spare arms left over from my other Clanrats and Plague monks. The conversion is pretty easy as you can snip off the arm underneath the cloth and and cut a spare arm to the same length. I also did some minor greenstuff changes and added hoods to a few figures and chopped off the existing hoods on a few figures. The shields are a mix of newer clanrat shields and along with some scratchbuilt from plasticard as the figures didn't come with shields.

Standard bearer and Musican
I wanted some command figures to match my clanrats but I didn't want to splash out buying metal figures so I used my bits box to convert these standard troopers. Again this is a pretty simple conversion. I hacked away the left arm with a pair of side cutters and a knife and used some spare arms from my Plague monks. The replacement arms are quite bulky so they hide any messy bits, but the plastic is pretty soft and easy to cut with a sharp knife. I'm pleased with how these came out and they obviously match in well with the rest of the unit!

Yeah I think you are right. I never noticed, I just picked a head that would fit well onto the body. Maybe I should add a patch...

Isn't the traditional thing a chunk of warpstone (like the original Throt)?

Great conversions!

Hmm some warpstone would look cool indeed. I use a small stone for that

I've completed some more conversions of the older Skaven clanrats, this time they have spears using mostly arms from the clanrats boxed set. I modified them slightly the same as the other clanrats with new shields and the odd bit of green stuff.

I've just got enough figures for a 20 man unit of spear and a 20 man unit of swords using these old figures

Hi all

I'm still chipping away at this army and finished some more figures - this time a unit of Rat Ogres. These are a mix of the older and newer plastic models but work well enough together. I didn't do any extra work on them apart from cover the mould lines and a splash of greenstuff.

While I have a ton of Skaven and other fantasy figures to paint along with a Reaper Bones 3 kickstarter arriving in a few months, I have a hankering to make some more terrain. I generally enjoy making terrain more than painting figures and I want to expand my fantasy collection with some old school fantasy buildings.

The first new building is this old fantasy cottage which featured in an early White Dwarf magazine. I made one in the early 90s (but lost it somewhere along the way) and now I plan to make 2 more and then follow it with some of the other classic GW buildings like the stables, townhouse and so forth.

The basic shape cut from black foamboard
(http://i1022.photobucket.com/albums/af342/6mmwargamin/28mm%20fantasy%20terrain/cottage2_zps2aypgdi8.jpg)

Some windows and doors cut out. I have kept it deliberately simple as that as the intention of the original design
(http://i1022.photobucket.com/albums/af342/6mmwargamin/28mm%20fantasy%20terrain/cottage3_zpsd9zeambl.jpg)

Some details. I've cut away the end of the wall to create a better joint and started on a chimney

I've made a small bit of progress last night on this. I cut the pieces for the second cottage and started on the windows and completed most of the chimney.

The Windows are mounted on card and the mesh is flyscreen door mesh. I've started on the timber frame of the Windows using some balsa wood.

Bunnings or Mitre 10. You can buy it in a roll by the meter or try scrounging some from a old flyscreen door. I actually got some off a mate who had some spare.

And a little more progress

I've completed the windows and started on the roofs, doors and a extension for one of the cottages.

And now some work on the roof tiles cut from card. I pre-cut a bunch while watching TV over a few nights.

Also I finished assembling the lean-to and did a little more on the doors.

And next I marked out where the balsa wood will go.

"This highly detailed plastic kit has a billion parts, enough to allow you to build either the Bloodhovyl or the Deathcottyge! The Bloodhovyl gives any models within 3" +trillion strength points! The Deathcottyge gives any models within 3" +squillion attacks! £75 each! Or available in a convenient one-click bundle from our website - two for £165...!"

Ahem. Sorry. I saw old WD content and then I blacked out.

Nice work on the cottage. :) All the extra details you're adding look very promising.

The old old WDs were good and had lots of good building making articles. I'm gonna work through them and make the Inn and some townhouses and maybe the Barn.

I've made some progress and they are starting to look like buildings now!

I've detailing and texturing the buildings using balsa and coloured caulk. I should have really painted the balsa before gluing it on but I was impatient.

And I finished the lean-to and textured it
(http://i1022.photobucket.com/albums/af342/6mmwargamin/28mm%20fantasy%20terrain/cottage13_zpsvyrow6yw.jpg)

More progress, now the second cottage is finished

And the roofs are done after many nights of gluing down individual tiles! I will add a center line once it is glued onto the building

Finished the cottages!  :)

I glued the walls together and inserted pins to help hold them together. Then I cut and glued the end balsa wood pieces on the and then fitted the roofs. But somehow I managed to stuff up the measurements so the roofs were not wide enough.    ::) So I quickly pulled apart the walls and chopped about 10mm off each of the main walls. After that little disaster the buildings went back together well and you wouldn't know. So I'm very happy with how they came out.

I've almost finished painting the cottages, but as I was painting them I noticed the black spray painted melted most of the chimneys
 :(
So I have pulled them off and made new ones (which are slightly better I think)

I've finished the first cottage and I'm very pleased with it. I went with a blue grey slate tiled roof and a creamy daub colour with a few washes similar to the original colours. I haven't decided how I will base it yet since I want to have a detailed base but that limits its uses, so I might try and keep the building removeable.

The second cottage is almost finished, I'm just waiting on a some paint to dry.

I admire your patience ( those roof tiles must have been a pain!) which obviously paid off with a lovely end result. Excellent PJ too!

And here's the second cottage with some more bad photos  ::)

You can see the chimney part I replaced and I might replace the bottom part one day as it is pretty melted. I tried to disguise it with some moss...

I don't think it matters that the foam melted a bit from the spray. It just makes the stone look more weathered.

Yeah the more i think about it, it gives the cottage some character and a backstory. Perhaps the to part of the chimney was rebuilt by its owner after a giant knocked it off.
