Title: Post-Apocalyptic Terrain Project
Post by: Gailbraithe on October 03, 2015, 09:11:38 AM
I'm building a post-apocalyptic town!  I'm playtesting a set of post-apocalyptic rules I've written, and to help set the mood for games I need a board full of post-apocalyptic collapse.  I'm loosely basing the town, Last Exit, on some of the small farming towns around me.  I've started with a bunch of Plasticville o Scale scenics.

First up is the local watering hole, a neutral ground where different factions can meet to negotiate and settle differences.  It's the Plasticville Diner with some pipe doodads from the Pegasus Chemical Plant set.  It still needs new signage, some more paint and basing.

Second is the Hanger, which is going to be part of a ruined airfield on the outskirts of town, and the headquarters of Burners faction.  The Burners are neo-primitives who have reverted to a tribal lifestyle.  This one is easy, it's just the Plasticville Hanger with a paint job.

Third is Militia HQ, a Plasticville Split-Level House converted into a fortified bunker for the New Cascadia Militia.  The NCM is the closest thing to a government in the area, and tries its best to keep any of the gangs of marauders from destroying what's left of Last Exit.  I've included some pre-priming photos as well.

Fourth is the Blockhouse, a Plasticville Apartment converted into another fortified bunker -- complete with machine gun nest -- that is used as the headquarters of the Sons of the Apocalypse, a biker gang that operates out of Last Exit.

Fifth, the Homestead, representing one of the many small family farms that struggles to eke out an existence in the dying soil of the post-apocalypse.  It's the Plasticville Two Story House with some more bits from the chemical plant box.

Yes.  Today I'll try to get some images to show scale.  The Plasticville pieces are really close to perfect.

Great work, I love Plasticville too.  I really like your hotel, especially the gun port on the second floor.

Great work, looks fun to play on too.

Those conversions look great. Can't wait to see them finished and on a gaming table. Thanks for sharing.

This looks awesome.  Three painted warbands, all named.  I'm very jealous.  The terrain looks very nice.  I'm looking forward to seeing it painted.  Following enthusiastically.

The burners look ace, I really like those EM4 minis.  8)

Wow!  :o Awesome work with the plastiville buildings! They look about the right size and all your detail work has made them look fantastic, it really adds to the ramshackle post apoc look  :-*  :-*

Cheers

I like the doors and shutters. 8) very cool building with the porch and flag. Will that top level get a little more weathering though? The cream timberwork looks a bit to new and clean.

Cheers

It's actually a bit more weathered looking than this photo really does justice to -- the top half is painted with Reaper's Dirty Bone, then drybrushed wth Reaper's Polished Bone and washed with Army Painter's Soft Tone ink and some of Reaper's Bone Shadow, and looks fairly weathered to the eye, but its too subtle for my camera to pick up with my lights and amateur photography skillz.

Lovely set up. I love what you've done with the plasticville buildings.                                                            I have most of those figures and a few of those buildings, just none of the talent or commitment to finish.

Well, at least you don't have to have 80%+ of your miniatures shipped from overseas.  :D

Ah nice. What size is used for 28mm compatibility?

O-scale which is 1/43-1/48 while 28mm are technicaly 1/56.
Now, the Plasticville buildings are actualy S-scale (1/64) with O-scale doors and windows, so small buildings, but 28mm figs fit in the doors are look in place behind a window.

Okay, so finished up the last bits of the Militia HQ, which meant fixing the flag, finishing the garage door, and weathering the chimney topper:

And now when you open the garage, there is a surprise inside: a Bate's Digester, which converts animal waste into methane gas and provides power to the HQ and its vehicles.

And some interior detailing: fireplace, comfy chair, and an office for the Militia Commander.

I also finished a trailer home.  The set comes with three, and this is the first I finished.  This one is someone's home:

Love your buildings.
I have a large number of them I use for my games.
They are great.

Fantastic buildings.  They had great "bones" but your painting and conversions put them over the top.

Thanks for all the nice comments!

I finished exterior painting on the Biker HQ, still have the roof and interior to do.  Here's the front:

The back:

This shot of the side shows off the peeling brickwork, which I'm really proud of.  Never tried anything like it before, did an experiment, and am very pleased with the results.

The peeling block wall does look good.  Did you stipple your grays over the base colour?

Yeah, using a sponge brush.

I love the look and feel you've created with this (terrain and figures.).

I have just dipped some circa 2000 half-painted Necromunda Escher and the same Copplestone bikers to make them one biker gang.

Out of curiosity, what are you using for the mesh? That isn't just drywall tape is it?

It's wireform mesh for sculpting. Here's the specific brand:
http://www.amazon.com/Activa-Activ-Wire-12-Inch-24-Inch-Sheet/dp/B00114TDBQ

Stuff is really great for modelling chainlink fencing.
