Title: LOTR - The war with Angmar
Post by: Steam Flunky on October 16, 2015, 06:49:38 PM
After taking some photos i was very happy with of the Blood Rage miniatures i have been painting, i thought it was time to start taking some better pictures of some other collections of mine.
Here i will be posting photos of my 15mm/18mm Middle Earth collection. At this time the Éothéod (Riders of Rohan) are living in northern Rhovanion along the Vale of Anduin, the (Stoor) Hobbit folk have returned and settled around the Gladden Fields, Angmar still stands and is at war with Arnor, the Istari have arrived and the hardy Forodwaith tribes are still living north of the Grey Mountains.

I am using the Copplestone barbarian miniatures as the Forodwaith tribes as are much too good to leave out!
When i have time i will probably replace the Blood Dawn/Eureka orcs with the orcs from Khurusan miniatures which i think fit better to Middle Earth and i wont paint them green.

T.A.1966. Early Eorlingas on patrol near the northern Misty Mountains.
Bands of orcs and other fell creatures from Angmar regularly raid east over the mountains and are a constant threat to the Éothéod and the other free peoples living in northern Rhovanian.

Figures are Blue Moon Manufacturing 15mm celtic cavalry slightly converted. I added cloaks out of greenstuff.

Those celts are some of the best 15mms I've seen (the horses look better than some 28mms) and the painting is byootiful, to say nothing of the scenery. This is pretty much the ideal M-E gaming scenario in my mind's eye, the thing I want to do. I'd like to shake your hand for doing what I didn't: actually getting off my backside to something about it!

It's great to see something from LotR that isn't really in the book as well, you don't often see background material being shown  8)

Yes. I have read the Silmarillion more often than LOTR. The epic stories of the first age are wonderful.
I decided to do early third age as you can have so much in a small area of northern Middle Earth. The ancestors of the hobbits and the Rohirrim are still up there. The elves of the greenwood, orcs and goblins, dragons, dwarves everywhere, trolls etc.

Here i will be posting photos of my 15mm/18mm collection that is based roughly in the north of early third age middle-earth. At this time the hobbits and the Eorlingas (Rohirrim) still lived in the far north of Middle-earth, near to where the Rivers Langwell and Greylin meet to form the beginning of the Great River Anduin.

I have added some barbarian tribes into the story as the Copplestone barbarian miniatures are much too good to leave out!
When i have time i will probably replace the Blood Dawn/Eureka orcs with the orcs from Khurusan miniatures which i think fit better to Middle Earth and i wont paint them green.

Trouble with trolls.
T.A.1966. Elves from Lórien driving off some trolls in the foothills of the Misty Mountains.

Large 15mm/18mm scale (roughly 1:100)
Elves on foot - Eureka 18mm fantasy (although the wood elves are more like 20mm scale)
Mounted elf - Demonworld (from Ral Partha Europe)
Trolls - old school 25mm scale Citadel miniatures.

This thread exemplifies what the hobby is about for me. A perfect marriage of good-looking figures and good-looking terrain, with the world-building and story-telling aspects front and center.

It really looks and feels like Middle Earth. Well done.

The miniatures bases are cleverly hidden, giving a very realistic feeling.

The miniatures bases are cleverly hidden, giving a very realistic feeling.
I use "Wild Grass Deco Fleece" from Heki to hide the bases. Its great stuff. If you cut irregular shaped pieces of it you can lay them in front of figures, tree bases, bottom of cliffs, just about anywhere to make it look more natural and hide anything.
I also glue small tufts of it on figure bases and sometimes place various pieces on the wargames table as rough terrain.

Wonderful stuff as always.

I keep thinking we should do a community-based kickstarter for a book each year of the best miniature photography here.  There are a handful of users who have brilliant set-ups and it'd be a crackin' little photo book to keep around.  Yearly editions and such.  lol

As i got everything out to take some pics of my 28mm goblin warband (Skirmish Warbands thread also here on the  fantasy board) i decided to use the opportunity and do some more of my 15/18mm fantasy collection. Hope you like it.

Clash of cavalry
Cavalry from one of the Forodwaith tribes living in the Northern Wastes clash with an fast moving warband out of Angmar in a valley on the edge of the Grey Mountains.

The hardy Forodwaith tribes live north of the Grey Mountains where they have been fighting a battle of survival since the first Age. The harsh climate and living in the proximity of first Angband and then Angmar have created many tough and independant tribes that have fought at various times for and against the dark lords.

Large 15mm/18mm scale (roughly 1:100)
Wargriders are from Eureka Miniatures 18mm Fantasy range and the barbarians are from Copplestone Castings Barbarica.

Go for it!
Its a great new side to the hobby. The trick is simply to take LOTS of pics from nearer, from further away, zoomed in, with light from differant directions etc. For every 10 or 20 photos i take i get 1 or 2 that are good.
It is time consuming building the scene and as i have no hobby room it is all done on the dining table between supper and bed and afterwards it has to be cleared away so the table is free for breakfast.

I would love to take part in this years 10th LPL but just about everything i have worth photographing was used last year or has been posted somewhere already (e.g. on the Blood Rage Thread). I am not sure that i can get 50 figures painted to a standard i am proud of, ready in time.
I believe Benbow has the same problem but as he is flying under the radar a bit at the moment (since his WIP houses for Placenoit) i think he is sneakily working hard on new miniatures!
We will see.

After enjoying Hobgoblins "Orcs and the gamefication of middle earth" thread discussion and playing our first game of Dragon Rampant i am in a real fantasy mood at the moment and decided to take a couple more photos of my middle earth collection.
Host of Lórien
T.A.1966. Noble cavalry from Lothlórien crossing the bridge at Woodford.

Large 15mm/18mm scale (roughly 1:100).

Thanks a lot everyone.

That's some of the most gorgeous stuff so far!

How did you model the thatched roofs?

The thatch is teddy bear fur. I paint it with a brown/dark sandy yellow base coat that is very watery and has some wood glue mixed in. When it is dry and hard it is dry brushed with lighter versions of the colour.

Thanks James, the water is simply clear resin. The resin from model shops is very expensive for very small amounts. If you need a bit more of it you can get it cheaper by ordering it from boat suppliers on the net.

It never ceases to amaze me how much of our difficulties modelling terrain stems simply from the fact that we don't know stuff. I've seen countless discussions all over the online hobby community on which is the best material for modelling water. Very often, someone will mention having bought the Vallejo stuff and discovered it's (by his/her account) terrible, and half a dozen other people will chime in saying they made the same mistake and later found better alternatives from other hobby companies (I forget which). Then there's often someone who'll say he/she used PVA glue and discovered it shrinks too much and yellows in time. These discussions also always keep coming back to the fact that whatever hobby company's product you choose, you'll be paying a lot of money for not a lot of product. Never before have I seen anyone mention clear resin from boat suppliers as a better, cheaper alternative.

It's like we're just stuck in some eternal carousel of ignorance, making the same mistakes, using the same less-than-perfect modelling techniques, buying the same substandard or overpriced modelling materials. Somewhere out there is a better way to model terrain... we just don't bloody know it exists! :)

Poliester resin?
Lo siento emosbar. I completely missed your post.
It is a 2 part epoxy resin with hardener. I ordered it from a internet boat suppliers for a surf board i was going to make. In the end i decided to start with a skimboard and then if i was happy with the result i would make a longboard afterwards.
The skimboard turned out OK (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=376554359054336&set=a.360978767278562.84507.100000993252550&type=3&theater) but i realised for the time and money put into it, i might as well buy a board and use the rest of the resin for rivers for my terrain.

Goblin Raiders
T.A.1966. A goblin war party from Moria has been waiting for the right moment to decend on the Éothéod and halfling villages around the Gladden Fields. Departing the ruins where they have been hiding they now leave the Misty Mountain foothills to attack.

Large 15mm/18mm scale (roughly 1:100)
Goblins from Magister Militums "Blood Dawn" range.

I wanted to ask btw, how do the Donnington figures scale with the rest of your 15mm fantasy range?

I ask as I'm trying to put together a generic 15mm medieval force using historical figures for fantasy, but can't find figures large enough that are reasonably close to the Copplestone Barbarians.

The Donnington are true 15mm (base to eye) but as they are civilians they do not need to be standing next to the reat of the figures so it does not bother me.
Nearly all of mine are large 15s (16mm to 18mm base to eye). I use-
Eureka fantasy 18mm (the Men of Grandeur are high middle age)
Blood Dawn (Magister Militum) 18mm
Blue Moon Manufacturing ancients 18mm
Demonworld (Ral Partha Europe) normal figures are 16mm or 17mm. Characters/heros are 17mm or 18mm.
Splintered Light miniatures 17mm
and of course Copplestone.
I have heard that the Black Raven Foundry miniatures are also big but i do not have any and i am waiting for some from Khurusan at the moment.
Cheers
Robert

Raid on a halfling village
T.A.1966. The goblin war party did not get the element of surprise they were hoping for. Éothéod scouts have been watching them since they left Moria and waited for them to move. As they attack the halfling village, Éothéod bowmen come out of the forest on their flank and the cavalry hits them head on.

Large 15mm/18mm scale (roughly 1:100)
Goblins from Magister Militums "Blood Dawn" range.
Halflings and men on foot are from Splintered Light Miniatures.
Cavalry are converted Blue Moon Manufacturing celtic cavalry.

Actually nearly all of the other 15s are real 15s.
I started with large 15s simply because they seem to be the smallest size where you get good proportions as well as good details/faces (Eureka, AB Miniatures, Copplestone etc), the only problem is the choice is more limited than true 15mm. Since i dont mind converting it is not too bad especially as Blue Moon Manufacturing are at last expanding their ancients range with dacians. Dacian warriors would make pretty good Rohan troops.

Usaually when i build a scene to take photos it is done on the dinner table and i am always under pressure to get the the photos taken and everything put away again before supper or bed . As my daughter is working in Mallorca at the moment i can build it in her bedroom and i have time to do bigger scenes like these here and also as i do not have to immediately put it all away again i will be able to do some more over the next few weeks (until my wife has had enough because she cant vacuum the floor in there).

Market Day
T.A.1966 Market day in the village of Woodford on the Celebrant river in Rhovanian

Large 15mm/18mm scale (roughly 1:100)
Market stalls and houses are scratch built by me (card, modeling plaster and fake fur thatch). Civilian figures are mostly 15mm Donnington Miniatures.
The keep is actually a 28mm scale model that i have cut down to size. As i got it 2nd hand i am afraid i dont know who makes it.

Thanks.
The background was a Skyrim poster that came with a computer magazine. (It looked like this - https://geoheritagescience.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/skyrim-mountains.jpg)
I cut the mountains off the bottom, glued them back on higher up to hide the warrior and other stuff, then painted a misty forest on at the bottom.
It is about 80cm x 30 cm which is a bit short. If it was longer i could place the figures further away from the background giving me more room to build scenes.

This set of photos i took last week before i started trying out taking photos outdoors (See my "Skirmish Warbands" thread). I will be posting the first of the outdoor 15mm pics soon.

T.A.1966 Angmar attacks
A force of orcs out of Angmar are intercepted by elves from Lorien at the bridge over the Lothduin river. The elves expected to stop them crossing but the orcs had a mammoth from the Northern Wastes leading the attack that easily pushed the elves aside.

Ok, a mammoth is not exactly canon Tolkien but i have bumped into a couple in Forodwaith in Lord of the Rings Online. Also i have replaced a lot of the orcs that i have used up to now with these from Khurasan as they are more like orcs discribed by Tolkien (i.e. not green gorillas). I decided on "sallow" skin colour, a sort of yellow-brown (that does look slightly green still).

Large 15mm/18mm scale (roughly 1:100)
Elves and orcs on wargs- Eureka 18mm fantasy miniatures
Orcs on foot - Khurusan Miniatures 15mm
Elf heros - Demonworld (Ral Partha Europe.)

Hi Stéphane,
i am afraid i dont know who makes the mammoth as i bought it at a convention bring and buy. The head was nice but the rest of it was terrible. I cut off the old howdah, modeled a cover over the body and scratch-built a new howdah.
Mirliton and Battle Valour Games both do nice 15mm mammoths.

I thought some of you might be interested to see how i build the scenes for the photos.
This was what i built up for "Angmar Attacks". As you can see the terrain only looks good from low down on the right hand side from where i took the photos. From the side you can see every trick i used to make it look good.
The hills and background are built up higher on top of books and boxes, bushes and grass hide gaps.

Excellent scenes - really atmospheric.

Its very interesting to see the behind the scenes shot, to see how you put together the scenery, with the aim to make it work from the camera's eye view. Its pleasing to see that to get the great photos you have to put in quite a lot of effort to set everything up! But its also good to see that there are a number of tricks to bring together various pieces of terrain to make something that is more than the sum of its parts. Great stuff.

Great! "Canon" is overrated, "fits the theme" is much more inspiring. Tolkien, obviously, incorporated quite a few ancient beasts in story telling but his world was open, and it's boundries and content not completely listed (thank the gods). At the fringes of the known world there is certainly room for mammuths. I think there *should* be, since Middle Earth is stated to be a sort of made up, heroic, golden age pre-history of our world.

After i made the mammoths for the orcs and Forodwaith tribe i decided i needed something bigger and more impressive. I could not find a big hairy looking beast in the size, look and price-range i wanted so i built my own.
As you can see it started out as a "Dogosaur" - a mix of a cheap plastic dino head glued on a dogs body (i am sure there is a dogs-body joke in there somewhere :D)
A little greenstuff made the head hairier and blended it together.
