Title: Foundry Normans
Post by: Jeff965 on October 18, 2015, 05:21:22 PM
Ten figures I recently painted for a mate of mine, I think his intention is to use them for skirmish games but also with the option of forming them up. To tight to buy shield transfers lol, he asked me to hand paint the shields hence the simple designs.

Great to see these painted up!  :-* :-* :-*

And as such a great reminder that some mini's in the range would look very good in my Norman Shieldwall for Hastings! I'll wait until they have one of their sales though ;) :)

Nice one Jeff.   ;D

Given their age they still stand up well against todays sculpts. :)

Too true Guv, I gave them some serious thought for my project, but the price! As Atheling said wait for the sale. Yes those shields are excellent, given me something to think about.

Excellent Jeff, personally I find transfers more aggro than painting shields  ::)

These are great Jeff.  One question,  do you ever get time to paint your own stuff?

Where's the fun in that Steve  lol. Nah only joking I'll be starting this years project soon, it's going to be "Camerone" using the new TMWWBK rules out in August.

I have seen these miniatures painted many times and painted really well but yours definitely take the cake - cracking job. What is your method for mail somehow yours looks better than the stock standard black with silver dry brush sorts?

Thanks for the kind comments Golgotha, the mail was done exactly as you described, figure sprayed black, dry brushed 50/50 mix of black and silver, highlighted with very light dry brush of straight silver and Matt varnished.

I am glad that he asked for more as I missed the first batch.
They look great, Jeff.
Gotta love them shields!
 :-* :-*

And even more so as they are hand painted shields, which I reckon is much more realistic as they did not have shield transfers in 1066, did they?
 ;) ;)

Paul when you think about it, after a few battles I don't know how you would have told the difference between warriors from either side.
What I mean is if I had survived a battle and wanted to "upgrade" my equipment, I wouldn't think twice about picking up a shield, weapon or armour off a dead foe.
And if I didn't want to be mistaken on the battlefield as one of the enemy, perhaps I would repaint the shield but I doubt the paint job on my shield would be much to write home about.

I agree, mate.
I reckon most shield designs of the period would have been pretty straightforward and none too complex as I do not reckon the average Dark Age warrior would be too fussed about painting a pretty picture on his shield.
He would have plenty of other things to occupy himself with, I am sure.
