Hi Folks - I started off on my Frostgrave terrain build this weekend. We wont be playing til later in the year / early 2016, but it seemed like a good time to start.
You can follow progress on the blog but I'll keep adding here to keep folks aware of the updates
http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/frostgrave-terrain-part-1.html (http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/frostgrave-terrain-part-1.html)
Up first is my first trial piece
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Frostgrave%20Terrain/FG11_zpsalmjazoc.jpg)
and a rather wonderful temple ;) (many thanks to Harry for alerting me to the possibility of these - see Harry does Frostgrave thread)
cheers
-
I like that temple, it's got a bit of a Conan vibe about it. Are you pleased with your Amera order?
-
Hi Steve
I ordered rather a lot from Amera and didn't quite realise how big some of the pieces were !
http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/amera-plastic-terrain.html (http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/amera-plastic-terrain.html)
am I happy - yes buts its going to be a lot of work getting these into the final condition.
The temple does have a Conan Vibe/Dwarven Vibe - I have actually bought two more :D - Both will be done up (one to sell)
I figured two side by side with a gate would look quite awesome

I figured two side by side with a gate would look quite awesome
Oh I bet that will look great, thanks for the idea.
A good start, I'll look forward to watching your progress. Thanks for sharing
-
Wow, they are pretty big pieces, aren't they.
The idea of two of those towers side by side sounds good. I really like the look.
-
hi Eric,
added a comment to your blog on the snow :)
-
These look great!
-
Thanks guys...
I have actually been scouring ebay for a few other plastic toys to populate my Frostgrave board.
I have managed to acquire the following to create Wizards Towers...
The Thundercats Tower of Omens Playset
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Frostgrave%20Terrain/Thundercats_zpsrce7n5c5.png)
Ben & Holly Magic Castle
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Frostgrave%20Terrain/Ben%20amp%20Holly_zps92xuueln.jpg)
When they arrive I'll be posting up pictures to share
cheers
-
I snagged the Tower of Omens at an indoor flea market a couple weeks ago. A really nice set with lots of possibilities, but massive in relation to 28mm scale on a 3' x 3' table.
-
Thanks for the heads up...
Better plan on cutting it down... ;)
-
Hi folks
I have posted up part two of my Frostgrave terrain build on the blog...the city is starting to come to life.
http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2015/11/frostgrave-terrain-part-2.html
(http://i1082.photobucket.com/albums/j375/ErictheShed/Frostgrave%20Terrain/ffg6_zpsygzzehvp.jpg)
I have also finished one piece to give folks the impression if what it might all like look once it is complete (minus snow)
full tutorials, materials etc on the blog
-
Looking great. Lots of elevated bits istm really adds to the game.
-
That looks insanely cool!! Awesome!
-
Oh my, I REALLY love your elevated areas... I may shamelessly steal your ideas for my own inspiration someday. Can't wait to see progress!

Of course you can ;)

Very nice scenery. Thanks for sharing

Excellent! Copying is the sincerest form of flattery! ;)

Part 3 of my Frostgrave terrain project is now up on the blog...
including this wonderful piece...

That's a very nice piece Giles. 8)
You're making big and fast progress with the terrain building for this project!
-
Will probably be my BLAM piece for next year or the Siege game I am working on...
-
Some very nice new additions there. I especially like the centrepiece ruin.
-
Top notch work mate!
-
great terrain building, on your last photo of the round temple is that scratch built from foamboard?
brian
-
I love the elevated sections. It gives a real choice, do I climb or go round it..... It reminds me of the, now sadly out of production, terraclips streets of malifaux which I only realised was out there once it was out of stock everywhere.
Did you find the pva and sand warped the board at all? I used pva to glue textured wall paper to some foam board and it curled up like a banana😠
-
Great work so far. Some ideas worth copying there :-*
-
More work done on the city this weekend...it is slowly coming together.... :)
Lots of pics on the blog but here is a couple to pique interest

This was a model I bought off ebay - produced by Ziterdes?

I add the pva first then the glue to the foam core - no problems of warpage

Another epic movie set. You never do things by half Giles 8)
-
Bloody hell Giles! :-*
That would be great for Atlantis or a Cthulhu game too.
-
Impressive progress. Thanks for sharing
-
Giles, you are allways good for suprising stuff. Great, as usual. And -like Steve(Elk101)- said: Useable for a lot of games.
-
:o God your good.
It could even double as a ruined city for Lord of the Rings.
-
Just posted some of the minis I have painted for the city...more figures painted on the blog
http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2015/11/frostgrave-minis-part-1.html (http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2015/11/frostgrave-minis-part-1.html)
I'll be doing the bases once the city is finished

Good to see the first denizens of 'Shedgrave'!
-
Nicely painted and variety of colours. Thanks for sharing
-
Loving the terrain so far...had missed that bit. Really like the walk-ways etc. Should be good for the game.
-
Very, very good as usual mate!

The latest load of Dragons has just arrived :D

yup.... lol
-
You are a wargames machine, Sir...!
Very useful.
Thanks
-
Steve would approve!
He most certainly does! ;) :D
I'm liking your approach Giles :D
-
Thank you Sir !!
Remarkably useful things Spreadsheets...god only knows what we would do without them.
I remember very clearly being exposed to excel back in the early 90's on an old IBM 286 and coz I worked in a market research business this transformed our business over night.
-
Surely you should be a Sigilist, they do the spreadsheets don't they?

:)
My first recollection of something similar dates from I think mid 1987 and was a bespoke financial analysis programme running on I think Windows 1 (the first version wasn't Windows as we generally know it and didn't have Excel). Might be recollected wrong, it was a long time ago!
Anyways, I admire your 'big project' approach. From what I've read, Frostgrave is more often a 'pick up' game and so it's good to see the project being put together 'shed style'!

Looks great Giles, well done.
(Although looking rather magnificently intact for the so called ruined city? ;))
-
this is part 1 of four boards... the non ruined piece...
here is a ruined board...
the grass will be going !
-
It looks great but I thought it would have more snow and ice on it.
-
Hi Rob
Still debating on the snow...If I add it I limit the usefulness in other projects.
Thanks for all the comments on the blog guys
-
Nice work Giles. The first board has a good selection of height variation without fiddliness and decent modularity too. I think I'll do something similar in a sci fi vein.
You'll have seen the missing paint on the end of the walkway so I won't even mention it :)
-
cheers Paul...we must catch up soon...
-
Very nice, Giles. And after this Frostgrave-Hype you can use it for Pulp Alley as Castle Wolfenstein ;) :D
-
Great stuff .... needs more snow. ;D
-
Started on the second board....I need three for my group :D

I've got some of those 40k ruins, but I've been avoiding them because of the bullet damage.
-
You mean the damage from the 'Wand of Magic Missile' lol
-
Very inspiring stuff! What's the tile pattern used on the walkways and boards?
-
The first board is my favourite, it looks like a great gameable table.
-
Very inspiring stuff! What's the tile pattern used on the walkways and boards?
The tile pattern is from scratch - all the details are on the blog but in essence I cut up a lot of eva foam squares, etched on the design and then painted

paint sticks beautifully....going to trial out some ideas with the thicker eva foam floor tiles

more progress on the terrain boards...now have 30 foot square boards produced...

You're not creating Frostgrave at 1:1 are you? :D
The base tiles really are very effective. Your productivity always amazes me Giles.

This is unbelievable. Giles, do you sleep?
-
This is unbelievable. Giles, do you sleep?
Sleep...yes about 6 hours a night.
Fortunately my job is based from home so I now save about 3hrs commuting every day, my kids can now fend for themselves and provided I do all the chores my wife asks of me my time is pretty much my own...
My terrain building is very much speed built - not going to win any prizes :D

Nice additions. Thanks for sharing
-
I keep imagining how cool these terrains would look with some snow added. Then again, I'm going to keep snow off my Mordheim, too. Lol!
Modular board looks great! Only thing I would have possibly done differently is that I would have painted the edges of the tiles, too. But I suppose that's just a matter of preference. Or I suppose a brush stroke of black around each tile will deal with it later, if you change your mind.
-
With your speed next october you can do a large Frostgrave-Game! With a dungeon as bonus, I think

I still need to paint the edges...thanks for the reminder

Excellent Giles!! 8)

Amazing! I like the way your painting scheme has linked the various terrain elements together so well.
-
Thats brilliant Giles! Easily the best Frostgrave board I've seen mate! :-*
-
Fantastic work mate!
(If it helps, I haven't seen the new star wars film either!
-
Gorgeous town, thank you for sharing the pictures!
-
Wowsers ... you need to stop now. :D
Great stuff. Love all the different levels ... may need to work some of that into my table.
-
OK - now that the terrain is almost finished (just waiting on three more boxes of Pegasus Gothic Buildings) I had to finish off all the figures for Frostgrave...
I have posted quite a few up on the blog but here are some to peak interest...(Note to Captain Blood...I used matt varnish ! this lot are not longer shiny)

aside from the cultists I have now painted everything that came in the level 5 nickstarter - these were a joy to build (soldiers box) and paint
now onto some games....
-
Definitely better with the matt varnish
-
The yetis are great, definitely some of my favourites.
-
Nice work on those plastic Frostgrave soldiers Giles. I think you have devoted a bit more than your customary three minutes per figure to painting these boys ;)
-
Nicely painted minis. Thanks for sharing
-
Thanks folks...I have played a few games so far but the Shed campaign kicks off in earnest this coming Monday
-
What a gaming table !
Do you plan to add some snow effect or do you leave it generic ?
-
We kicked off our Frostgrave trial game last week to much merriment and humour...sadly I forgot to take piccies.... :-[
However the campaign starts in earnest in March once the weather warms up and I can get into the shed. So for the time being this thread sir going on hold and I'll be focussing on my other projects.
Effectively to finish this project all I need to do is paint the cultists and it is done....
This may make an appearance at Blam this year
-
How do you like the game, Giles?
-
In two words - Great Fun...
Yes the combat is oversimplistic and either has no affect or is incredibly deadly - my warpig (read Warhound) managed to take out an opposing Wizard with a Critical Hit (20)
But the real fun comes from the Spells...just like the good old D & D days throwing around lightning bolts, walls of fog, wizards eyes etc
My only real criticism is that the henchmen (other than a few stats to differentiate them) are some what bland.
I'd like to have seen each with different skills eg Thieves with skills (climbing, hide in shadows, backstabbing) - anybody can climb in this game, Rangers with tracking (eg find invisible, hide in shadows etc)
Thinking of running a league at BLAM - a four way game for BLAM - each Wizard will be set around level 10 (ie more spells greater chance of casting etc)- each lasting an hour. With a final for the winning Wizards.
Five games in a day ! Could host 16 players....
-
That certainly sounds interesting. I thoroughly enjoyed your Pulp Alley bash last year.

I haven't played the game, yet, but I have to agree that I was surprised that the different henchmen had no particular skills. I presume the names are just a way of differentiating minor differences in combat rather than implying a class as in D&D. For me, it is the campaign that looks most interesting. I also think that this will play well as a solo game using just a few tweaks here and there.
-
Hi - didn't want to hijack the other thread you recently commented on regarding terrain building!
I'm currently in the process of getting our small group started with Frostgrave which has meant feverish activity putting together the terrain. As a result, I've been immensely inspired by your thread!
One thing I have found of great benefit is the use of EVA sheets for paving and couldn't find any reference to whether or not you sanded this as you do your foamcore buildings?
-
Hi Plus 4
Thanks for the positive comments. The simple answer to your question is NO - I have not put sand on the eva sheets. These have just been embossed with a biro, given a matt black undercoat and then drybrushed.
cheers
-
Thanks - have 2 large buildings that have reached the sanding stage and had been stumped about the EVA! Should hopefully be able to post pictures soon!
-
Does the EVA sheets score like foamcore? Or do you have to cut out chunks?
Thanks

Thanks
It scores like foamcore and is flexible...I am currently using some to wrap a tower

Having now played Frostgrave now a few times I decided to capture my thoughts on the blog...

A good read and I'm loving the idea of the BLAM game!

An interesting read. Thanks for sharing your experiences/ thoughts

A great idea for a scenario with terrain and minus at the usual excellent Shed standard - what's not to like?
Bravo sir, welcome back to the frozen city!

Good heavens, that is impressive work Sir!!!

Wow, that is some nice looking table!
-
Welcome back sir - you have been missed!

Nice to see the whole city out for a spin. It is truly epic to play on :D. Last time I used my Sigalist everyone got a shock about how fun 'push' can be.

That bridge of dragons table is my favourite, I love a table with multiple levels that are actually practical to play on.
