Title: Shed Wars Frostgrave Project - returning to the city (july 2020)
Post by: Eric the Shed on October 19, 2015, 09:28:56 AM
Hi Folks - I started off on my Frostgrave terrain build this weekend. We wont be playing til later in the year / early 2016, but it seemed like a good time to start.

You can follow progress on the blog but I'll keep adding here to keep folks aware of the updates

http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/frostgrave-terrain-part-1.html (http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/frostgrave-terrain-part-1.html)

Up first is my first trial piece

and a rather wonderful temple  ;) (many thanks to Harry for alerting me to the possibility of these - see Harry does Frostgrave thread)

I like that temple, it's got a bit of a  Conan vibe about it. Are you pleased with your Amera order?

Hi Steve

I ordered rather a lot from Amera and didn't quite realise how big some of the pieces were !

http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/amera-plastic-terrain.html (http://shedwars.blogspot.co.uk/2015/10/amera-plastic-terrain.html)

am I happy - yes buts its going to be a lot of work getting these into the final condition.

The temple does have a Conan Vibe/Dwarven Vibe - I have actually bought two more  :D - Both will be done up (one to sell)

I figured two side by side with a gate would look quite awesome

Wow, they are pretty big pieces, aren't they.

The idea of two of those towers side by side sounds good. I really like the look.

Thanks guys...

I have actually been scouring ebay for a few other plastic toys to populate my Frostgrave board.

I have managed to acquire the following to create Wizards Towers...

The Thundercats Tower of Omens Playset

Ben & Holly Magic Castle

When they arrive I'll be posting up pictures to share

cheers

I snagged the Tower of Omens at an indoor flea market a couple weeks ago. A really nice set with lots of possibilities, but massive in relation to 28mm scale on a 3' x 3' table.

I love the elevated sections. It gives a real choice,  do I climb or go round it..... It reminds me of the, now sadly out of production, terraclips streets of malifaux which I only realised was out there once it was out of stock everywhere.

Did you find the pva and sand warped the board at all? I used pva to glue textured wall paper to some foam board and it curled up like a banana😠

This was a model I bought off ebay - produced by Ziterdes?

I add the pva first then the glue to the foam core - no problems of warpage

Remarkably useful things Spreadsheets...god only knows what we would do without them.

I remember very clearly being exposed to excel back in the early 90's on an old IBM 286 and coz I worked in a market research business this transformed our business over night.

:)

My first recollection of something similar dates from I think mid 1987 and was a bespoke financial analysis programme running on I think Windows 1 (the first version wasn't Windows as we generally know it and didn't have Excel). Might be recollected wrong, it was a long time ago!

Anyways, I admire your 'big project' approach. From what I've read, Frostgrave is more often a 'pick up' game and so it's good to see the project being put together 'shed style'!

Nice work Giles. The first board has a good selection of height variation without fiddliness and decent modularity too. I think I'll do something similar in a sci fi vein.
You'll have seen the missing paint on the end of the walkway so I won't even mention it :)

The tile pattern is from scratch - all the details are on the blog but in essence I cut up a lot of eva foam squares, etched on the design and then painted

Sleep...yes about 6 hours a night.

Fortunately my job is based from home so I now save about 3hrs commuting every day, my kids can now fend for themselves and provided I do all the chores my wife asks of me my time is pretty much my own...

My terrain building is very much speed built - not going to win any prizes :D

I keep imagining how cool these terrains would look with some snow added. Then again, I'm going to keep snow off my Mordheim, too. Lol!

Modular board looks great! Only thing I would have possibly done differently is that I would have painted the edges of the tiles, too. But I suppose that's just a matter of preference. Or I suppose a brush stroke of black around each tile will deal with it later, if you change your mind.

OK - now that the terrain is almost finished (just waiting on three more boxes of Pegasus Gothic Buildings) I had to finish off all the figures for Frostgrave...

I have posted quite a few up on the blog but here are some to peak interest...(Note to Captain Blood...I used matt varnish ! this lot are not longer shiny)

aside from the cultists I have now painted everything that came in the level 5 nickstarter - these were a joy to build (soldiers box) and paint

now onto some games....

We kicked off our Frostgrave trial game last week to much merriment and humour...sadly I forgot to take piccies.... :-[

However the campaign starts in earnest in March once the weather warms up and I can get into the shed. So for the time being this thread sir going on hold and I'll be focussing on my other projects.

Effectively to finish this project all I need to do is paint the cultists and it is done....

This may make an appearance at Blam this year

Title: Re: Shed Wars Frostgrave Project - painted figures (07/01)
Post by: Eric the Shed on January 19, 2016, 08:24:16 PM
In two words - Great Fun...

Yes the combat is oversimplistic and either has no affect or is incredibly deadly - my warpig (read Warhound) managed to take out an opposing Wizard with a Critical Hit (20)

But the real fun comes from the Spells...just like the good old D & D days throwing around lightning bolts, walls of fog, wizards eyes etc

My only real criticism is that the henchmen (other than a few stats to differentiate them) are some what bland.

I'd like to have seen each with different skills eg Thieves with skills (climbing, hide in shadows, backstabbing) - anybody can climb in this game, Rangers with tracking (eg find invisible, hide in shadows etc)

Thinking of running a league at BLAM - a four way game for BLAM - each Wizard will be set around level 10 (ie more spells greater chance of casting etc)- each lasting an hour. With a final for the winning Wizards.

Five games in a day ! Could host 16 players....

I haven't played the game, yet, but I have to agree that I was surprised that the different henchmen had no particular skills.  I presume the names are just a way of differentiating minor differences in combat rather than implying a class as in D&D.  For me, it is the campaign that looks most interesting.  I also think that this will play well as a solo game using just a few tweaks here and there.

Hi - didn't want to hijack the other thread you recently commented on regarding terrain building!

I'm currently in the process of getting our small group started with Frostgrave which has meant feverish activity putting together the terrain. As a result, I've been immensely inspired by your thread!

One thing I have found of great benefit is the use of EVA sheets for paving and couldn't find any reference to whether or not you sanded this as you do your foamcore buildings?

Post by: Eric the Shed on February 10, 2016, 02:13:15 PM
Hi Plus 4

Thanks for the positive comments. The simple answer to your question is NO - I have not put sand on the eva sheets. These have just been embossed with a biro, given a matt black undercoat and then drybrushed.

cheers
