Title: 6mm VSF (Rifles+artillery)
Post by: Stroezie on October 23, 2015, 07:15:18 AM
Hi all,

I'm just starting out in VSF, looking to game it in my favourite scale 6mm.
I'd like to do some space 1889, martian empires with some venutian dino hunting on the side.

While scouting around for suitable figures I've begun building some vehicles already.

I thought I would share them with you.

A Brittish steam walker

And finally a small aeroneff

I'll start with some "nekkid" pictures for those who like to guess what parts were used ;-)

Here is a picture of Lt. Rockbottom and two troops inspecting the new ship to give you a sense of scale

But whats that, the paint is not even dry yet and those dastardly Prussians have hijacked the ship...

I still have to make a magnetised deckgun, gatling and nordfeldt gun to put on the ring up front and then I'll have to think of a name for this beauty.

Thats it for now, I hope to have more to show you all soon.
Cheers,
Stroezie.

Wait, Glenn, I thought 15's were the one true scale?  ;D

Is delightful, Stroezie. Thanks for sharing, especially the 'nef, though for those of us who like to guess, the WIP should always be at the end.  lol

Wait, dastardly? Prussians are stalwart, loyal, traditional, cunning, devious... Now cut that out! ;)

Cool stuff! I've been thinking of making 6mm VSF/sword-and-planet airships myself lately, so this is very inspirational. Love the steam walker as well.

I've been considering something similar in 6mm, down to the British walkers! (Awful kind of those martian johnnies to pop their clogs and leave their mechano-ambulatory tech lying around the home counties) But I agree that aeroneff is the pick of the bunch.

Whose infantry figures are you using?

Post by: Stroezie on October 23, 2015, 06:05:00 PM
Thanks for the compliments.

@ Vermis
The figures in the pictures are test figures I ordered from Irregular miniatures to see how they would paint up.
They are nice enough figs for big formations but lack the detail for the kind of individually based skirmish games I ptefer. I'll be getting some new figures from Baccus at Crisis 2015 in a few weeks time. They're a bit bigger and chunky but have loads more individual character imo.

Hey Stroezie,

Very nice work and individually based 6mm figures I like it, great minds think alike I am slowly building a 1/285 scale force of Martian Tripods!

Well, Captain Darling sir,

The great minds thing must be true, I have two partially built alien tripods sitting on my desk right now, just need to find the time to finally finish them ;-)

Toodels.

Now that I have some more spare time during the holidays I've begun building a new cephalod force.

As I couldn't find anyone selling 6mm cephalopod figures I decided to try and sculpt them myself.
So far I've made a leader and some grunts...

Next I'd like to try some flying cephalopods and some kind of king or general type figure.

I also made some vehicles as I never seem to be able to start a new force without them and to be honest what are cephalods without tripods :D

So far I've made two tripods, one armed with a heatray and the other with a black smoke projector

Lastly I made a Handler also armed with a heatray

Sadly I once again forgot to take fotos during production so this is the only shot I have for the bits junkies amongst you

And lastly I'll leave you with a shot all the completed models so far

Thats all for now, I'll post some more pics once I finish the flying cephalopods

I finished the first of the flying cephalods

This one is still a bit of a testrun but I think I've got the process for making the wings hammered out now and I'm hoping the next ones will be a bit more even, still I'm happy enough with how this one turned out. Hopefully I'll be able to get some paint on it later today.

A quick question, I've been thinking of getting the Martian Empires rules from Black Hat, how many and what kind of figures would I be looking at for a starting force of cephalods?

Nice looking sculpts...

The starter force for the cephalods is:

2 units of infantry
1 flying ceph unit
1 smoke projector unit
1 heatray unit
1 tripod
1 handling machine
3 commanders

Each infantry and flying unit is 4 bases, smoke projector and heatray units are 2 bases and it is up to you how many figures you put on a base. For a normal 15mm force you would need:

24 infantry
4 flying cephs
2 smoke projectors
4 heatrays
1 tripod
1 handling machine
3 commanders

Hope that helps

Mike

Wow a reply from the man himself ;)
Thanks, looks like I still have a bit of sculpting to do then.

I'll be ordering the rules once my wallet recovers from the christmas madness and then I'm thinking of getting some 6mm Brits from Baccus as an opforce.

Ok so after getting some "Oh look minions with tentacles" remarks I decided to try a slightly different paintjob and now I can't decide which one to go for.

What do you guys think, the new eye on the left or the original on the right?

Needed a break from sculpting my chepalods so I built me some more Imperial Martian scout fliers.

The main body is a milk carton lid, I just added some bits et voilla.

Here's a few pictures of the first one I did.

For the last few months I've been collecting bottle caps from various cleaning products and this weekend I decided it was time to start using them to build a martian kraal/vilage.

I got the idea for these from looking at sub saharan african architecture.

Here's a picture of them being built
(http://i1223.photobucket.com/albums/dd513/stroezie/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20160212_094750_zpsokfoynkw.jpg)

And the finished product, three dwellings, three incubators and a grain silo
(http://i1223.photobucket.com/albums/dd513/stroezie/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20160212_231119_zpspbuuxiwu.jpg)

I still have to put hinges and doorknobs/pull rings on the gates.

I made these first few as a test run and plan to build about 5 more and then maybe some kind of enclosure/surrounding wall to put them all in.

That's it for now as I leave you with one more picture of my entire VSF mars project so far...

Ps: Yes I am a verry erratic builder/painter so don't expect any logical progress ;-)

Cheers,
Stroezie.

Here's a few pics of the new houses and village so far

I'll post a picture of the tower once it's done.

@ wolfkarl

I'm afraid it'll be a while yet before I can do any batreps, for the rules I've settled on Martian Empires from Black Hat but I still need to sculpt about 25 or so figures for my Cephalod starting force and then I'm going to order a force of British colonials and a force of Mahdist (red martians) from Baccus 6mm as opforces.

Looks excellent. I started a 6mm VSF collection too, once upon a time, and stalled out completely. You are doing well!

Coincidentally, I also bought Mahdists for my Red Martian forces. They were Heroics and Ross, and I am not really happy with them for a variety of reasons, so when/if I ever get back around to 6mm, I was looking at Baccus figures. I have some of their British colonials that I painted as Seebattalion with which I am pleased.

So after getting side tracked by a 6mm Space Hulk build and the start of a 6mm greek fantasy project I finally got round to finishing the next 5 buildings for my village, I also made some more grain silos and a well.

My Cephalod starter force for martian empires is finally finished!

All of these were sculpted and/or scratch built by me. For the past year I've been using these as dump sculpts meaning that I always have some dollies on my desk in various stages of being finished and then when I have some putty left over from sculpting other things I use it to work a little more on these. This way I don't burn out on making so many of the same sculpts and I also dont waste any green stuff, double win!  ;)

But enough chit chat, pics or it didn't happen!

I'll start with a picture of the whole force

And now some close ups

The glorious leadership

The lowly grunts

A bunch of flyboys

The heatray artillary

The dreaded black smoke projectors

And a shot with a little bit of every thing for size/scale comparison

Ok, I hope you enjoy them as much as I do  :P

Now I can get started on the Green Martians and who knows maybe next year I might be able to actually play my first game of 6mm Martian Empires.

Cheers,
Stroezie.

I did a test piece to see if my idea of using Rapier miniatures Sea People as red martians  would work.

Its a very simple conversion, I snipped of their feathered headdress and slapped on a quick and dirty greenstuf helmet and then painted them like red martians, that's it.

Personally, I like them! What do you think?

Up close you can see how quick and dirty the helmets really are

Oh well now that I know it works I may take a little more care with the following ones.

I've already ordered some more packs from Rapier's classical and chariot wars ranges which I think will work and I have bases coming in from Warbases so you can expect to see more pictures in the (hopefully) near future.

Title: Re: 6mm VSF (New Martian Flyer)
Post by: Stroezie on October 03, 2016, 01:35:28 PM
While waiting for my Rapier miniatures "red martians" to arrive I decided to build myself another martian flyer.

In the Martian Empires rules there are two types of small martian flyers.
I had already made some scout flyers which are the smallest kind and have no onboard armament.
So now it was time to build the larger armed flyer.

Since I used a milk karton lid for the first kind of flyer I figured why not use another kind of lid for this build. I made the engines, control panel and fueltanks the same to tie the two kinds of flyers together.

But enough prattle on to the pictures

Together with the scout flyers

And some different angle shots for those of you who like to guess at the components ;)

I'll even flip it over for you so you can look at it's belly button :-))

Thats it for now,
I'll post some more pictuses if I manage to put some paint on it later this week.

Ok, so I'm still waiting for the rest of the miniatures to arrive before I can do any more work on my red martians but I did manage to do 3 hero/leader figures

I redid their weapons and added a cape and gold choker to two of them and thats about it.
The minis are all from Rapier miniatures 2 sea people and a greek hoplite.

I kept thinking the flyers would also be great for someting like Flash Gordon so I cooked up some figures to try it out

Hmm, I think I smell yet another project coming.... ;D ;)

I've also decided to build one more flyer of each type but with a few small changes so that I can try to cast them in resin ( this will be a first for me so we'll see how it goes)

That's it for now, hopefully my figures will show up soon and I'll have more to show you.

Cheers,
Stroezie.

Ok,

I've finally managed to base all of my cephalods and I have started on my red martians.

All units are/will be based on  either 3x3 or 1.5 x3 cm 2mm thick MDF

Ok already! pictures or it didn't happen.

The Cephalods

The red martians

These are the first 2 units of swordsmen, they are a mixture of Rapier miniature codes SEA001, SEA002 and IND002.

I started with these as they didn't need much by way of conversions, just cut down the spears of the SEA002's and filed them flat and pointy so I could paint them as swords. I also filed down some of the feathered headdresses so I could paint them as helmets, all in all I'm quite happy with how they turned out.

Here's a piccie of everything so far

Thats it for now, if you liked this, stay tuned for more.

Next up will be a unit of Imperial guards armed with pole arms/spears (ASR001 no conversion), a unit of Imperial guards armed with rifles and pavises/shields (TRJ002 cut back the long spears and bent and filed them down to resemble a kind of musket) and a unit of regular riflemen(ASR001 and TRJ004 trimmed down and bent the bows to look like handguns or cut away the bows completely and rearmed with muskets made from the leftovers of the spears of TRJ002)

When these are finished I'm going to try to convert ASR005 Assyrian cavalry to Thoat mounted cavalry( oh boy, how do I keep getting myself into these things?)

Cheers,

Stroezie.

And yet more red martian troops.
This time its two units of imperial guards,

The melee unit armed with shield and spear

And a ranged unit armed with pavise and radium rifles

Here's a pic with the donor figure so you can all marvel at my converting skills ;-)

The left over pieces of the pikes were used to arm a unit of regular rifles,
here's a sneek peek at that unit

More pics when they are decent and have some more paint on them.
Probably in a week or two as I'll be going camping with the kids next week so no painting then.

Cheers,
Stroezie.

Two questions a quick run through an entire year of 6mm goodness didn't yield:

Did you explain what you used for the furrowed fields, and,

do you have opponents to share this with?

Oh my it has been a year already hasn't it, how time flies... :D

The fields are simply corrugated cardboard painted with PVA and sprinkled with fine sand and then painted a few different shades of brown. It has been glued to a piece of plastic sheet to avoid warping.

As for opponents, sadly none so far. I have found a local club who play mostly Flames Of War. My plan is to join them under the guise of an early war French army and then to try and subvert some of them to VSF / Scifi lol lol lol

Would have been my first guess, though I'd have thought the 'mounds' would have been even larger. Other, other hand, I have seen some small corrugations in some cardboards.

How ungentlemanly! How devious! How delicious! ;->=

I have seen solo gamers going to this effort, but that seemed too sad for words.  ;)

Well, I guess it's been a bit longer than 2 weeks but anyhoo...

Finally managed to take some crappy smartphone pictures of my 2 latest red martian units

A unit of rifelmen

and some float platform artillary

I popped 2 stands into the lightbox in an attempt to get you a better look

Here's a shot of the red martian host so far

And now I'll leave you with a small preview of the last unit of red martians which I'll be doing for now...

the thoat cavalry

I still need to sculpt on all of the features but you can at least see the basic concept.

Btw. anybody have a good idea what to do with a dozen or so 6mm decapitated horse heads?

Lovely additions.

I too can't think what to do with the heads. There's not many uses for horse trailers with two heads sticking out. (Unless you design some sort of racing game to get to the racecourse.)

I must be rapidly losing it, failing to hit 'post.' I had the solution, recalling The Godfather series of movies.

Leave them in 6mm beds as 'offers they can't refuse...'  ;)
