Title: French Indo China project
Post by: Paul @ Empress Miniatures on October 23, 2015, 09:47:53 AM
Concentrated on a personal project this summer which was French Indo China.

Having busied myself speed painting figures and making terrain so that its like living in an aquarium I thought that I would share the project with you.

Its planned as a large skirmish type game suitable for Bolt Action or in my case I am using adapted World Aflame. Smaller actions will be Danger Close.

Forces are currently;

French;

1st company;

HQ, medic, and support section with 30cal .

2 x 8 man sections.

2nd company;

HQ, medic, and support section with 30cal .

2 x 8 man sections.

Plus

mortar.

Recoiless rifle unit

Recce / observer unit. 4 men

Vehicles are being worked on at the moment and will include armour and transport as well at least one aircraft.

Vietminh;

HQ unit with medic, mortar, MMG, recoiless rifle.

5 x 8 man sections

Some transport types such as ox and buffalo carts.

As said vehicles are being completed at the moment and terrain is almost done with the last major project being a village.

I will gradually add to this post as I get things done.

Cheers,
Paul ;)

Wow!
Those are some very impressive figures.You have some serious painting skills.
I can't paint people for squat so I just stick to tanks and other vehicles.

Outstanding figures.
Love them.
Look forward to see what you do with vehicles.
Planning to do any riverine action?
LVTs and rag boats would be so cool.
I have a bunch of these guys.
 I purchased them when Red Star first came out with them.
I decided to do later Viet Nam.
Americans and NVA. Total of about 250 figures painted.
That was my war.
Still with tons of terrain done,
all I have to paint is figures.
May have to go for it.
Sorry for thinking out loud.
Hope you don't mind.

Thanks guys very kind of you.

Yes to water born actions at some point as I have a fancy to do a French version of the Apocalypse Now beach attack but without the helicoptors. In other words with Buffalos and landing craft. However at the moment trying to get the vehicles and terrain finished.

First game scenario will be based on a para drop. Thats gotta be a challenge landing in a jungle  lol

For the French Colonial buildings I planned to use buildings from the Empress Spanish Civil War range as I have them done and they pretty much fit in with the look.

Anyway thanks for the kind comments and I will keep this page updated as I move forward.

Marine0846 looking forward to seeing your guys painted up.

And that would be great to see the water operations and terrain once you get them set up for a game.
Also I don't know to much about jumping into the jungle, but from my experience jumping into a regular forest can really ruin your day.

Very nice, I love the post world war 2 conflicts. Lots of the same kit, but different. Greece, Dutch East indies/ Indonesia, Malay, Korean war, the war for Israel/Palestine just to name a few. All very interesting, but not well represented in figures.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

So tempting to reserve the this long dormant project. Very nice modelling, painting (is that quick shade dip or wash and what tone did you use, as I may try to copy this, they look great) and weathering. I to would like to know where vehicles and crew are from?

Warlord games bolt-action miniature range.

Thanks chaps.

Just to confirm the vehicles are all from Warlords Bolt Action range. I have a few more on the bench being done although have got side tracked back to a Vietnam village kinda based on the coastal one in Apocalypse Now. No helicopters though  lol

The figures are from Empress Jazz Age range. Mainly the Rolls Royce crew with some different heads from FNG's range. There is one tank commander in a Chaffee that comes with the vehicle.

Paint technique used is the basic colour which is from a Humbrol spray can. Then washed with Plastic Soldier Company washes that you can then let dry and then go back at any time and dilute with water. Let the colour flow around, its great fun. Paint chips are the usual method of lighter green in patches and then on relevant parts where wear and tear is most dark 'panzer' grey. Lastly using Mig powder colours, with the fastener, wash these on and again play with them. Let them wash into the crevices and gaps.

This does sound very complicated but its actually very easy. The trick, as always, is to get the right materials. Ebay is a good place or go directly to source as with the PSC.

For reference Google larger scale models as some of the work done with bigger scale kits as one of pieces is very inspirational.

Hope that helps?

I will do a ' how to build' on the village when is is finished  ;) (I also want it for an Ultra Modern project with PLA island warfare. That will have helicopters  lol)

Cheers,
Paul
