Title: Simple Solution to Exp Disparity
Post by: monkeylite on October 25, 2015, 02:09:02 PM
If this is a problem in your games, it strikes me that there is a very simple solution. Just record exactly the state of your warband in between each game. Then you will have a record of it for every game level you've played, and will be able to recreate it.

If you are playing someone who has only played two game (and you've played loads) simply field your two game warband, instead.

This solution also allows you to nail on whatever handicaps you wish. Eg, you could say that you couldn't have a disparity of more than 3 (coz you want to reward more powerful warbands, but not too much). So, against a two game warband, you could field a fiver.

Any exp and treasure you win just goes on to your running total.

If you need to construct a linear narrative for your band, then this might be a bit of a problem, coz you will effectively have parallel realities, or something. But in a game that includes Chronomancers, istm, this is a reasonable amount of timey-wimey.

(Sorry, I couldn't resist  ;) )
Seriously, not a bad idea, if  you're one of those good people who can keep their game sheets in proper order. My own line of thought has run towards a few compensatory rolls on the potions and scrolls charts, as imprecise as that is.  It's good to have various options available to address this, though, since styles and dispositions vary.  Yours is a very precise answer, of course, for those willing to put a little effort into it.

Don't think the additional administration is a major issue; it isn't much work to digitally keep track of your band, copying the list from a previous game and applying the changes. Would probably bring a list of similar level rather than the number of games as that's a better indicator of their exact strength (a successful warband can get stronger very rapidly in just 3 games). My sole potential concern is that injuries and deaths are of little importance this way. Wounded apprentices or wizards could have their medical issues transferred - but to all 'future' bands, or just the most advanced version? How/when could these then be cured, or what happens when a 'past' spellcaster dies? Injuries will either just pile up, or be ignored, rendering any caution mostly irrelevant - the player using a 'historical' band can safely lose the warband members, knowing it will have no further impact. Perhaps reduce the gold discovered by the value of all lost (i.e. properly dead) soldiers? Not sure how to fairly retain or discard injuries on the spellcasters however.
