With the upcoming release of the new plastic HYW French from the Perry brothers I am finding myself more and more interested in this period. Initially, I am just looking at painting up a few figures so I can play some skirmish games with my seven year old nephew using GW’s LOTR rules.
As a longer term project though, if my nephew shows an interest, I would like to build up a couple of small armies for use with the War and Conquest rules. The problem is, I am not sure what a French army of the period would comprise in terms of troop types.
With the English box from the Perry brothers, I can make a unit of MAA and two units of longbowmen, which I think is a good starting point for a small army. Not sure what to do for the French though. Would they mostly be MAA with a few crossbow armed troops or would there be other infantry types too? I am ignoring cavalry for the moment, as I am just looking at what is available in plastic.
Thanks

Scaled to the same size units as the plastic English then yeah, they would be as you have described above. :)

You should look at Lion Rampant as it is easy to learn and fun to play.
The book has a French and English army list and several scenarios.

Good suggestion from Mick- it's a howl to play :D :)

I have Lion Rampant but feel the LOTR rules will be easier for him to follow. Only looking at a handful of figures on each side and I think the latter will work better at that scale. Will certainly use the lists in Lion Rampant as a guide though. :)
