Just watched the first episode on the itv player and I rather enjoyed it. It brings the story into the 20th Century (early thirties I think so classic Pulp era) and takes it to new levels. I like the secret, Secret Service which has pulp written all over it - it's a kind of pre-war Men in Black. Headed by Richard E Grant and called MIO (Military Intelligence Other, I think) it deals with areas MI5 and MI6 don't cover such as paranormal events, monsters and stuff. IAnd it's on the trail of Dr Hyde/Jekyll's descendent.
Worth a watch.

I have recorded it, mate.
I hope it is good but the 6.30pm slot does make me think it may be a bit 'family friendly'....
Fingers crossed, as what you have said sounds promising.
I shall give it a butchers in the next couple of days.

I quite enjoyed it. Looked good and not too bad for ITV. I would rather it was just about the MIO as Richard E Grant were the best thing in it. The Dog/Man was very entertaining and looks like a good villain.

Paul - you don't need to worry on that score. Actually, I'm a bit surprised by the 6.30 slot - it's almost post 9.00 o'clock material. Certainly some bits would be quite scary for old age pensioners like me Kids.... :)

I rather enjoyed it! Written by Charlie Higson - his stuff is normally very good. His Young Bond and The Enemy book series are both worth checking out.
-
I've heard good things of this, so I'm looking forward to watching when it reaches these shores. Richard E. Grant plays a great villain. :)
-
Definitely worth a watch guys!......and Paul, don't worry about the family friendly crap, some of it is actually quite creepy! Apparently there was several complaints to OFCOM on that front. Many saying it should've been after the watershed.
-
All good news, then.
Thanks, chaps.
:D
I think that I may watch it this afternoon.

It aint bad, mate.
Plenty of ideas could come from this.
Just in time for our new Strange Aeons campaign that we will be embarking on soon.

In fact, MIO reminds me more than a little bit of M.O.O.S.(E). to be honest.
These fellas would make great MIO Agents...

...with a more suitable darker paintjob, of course.

Yeah, the man-faced dog demon 'Harbinger' was horrible! Seriously creepy and worthy of inclusion in anyone's Cthulhu-type setting.
Richard E Grant was wonderfully over-the-top in his unique insane style and the whole concept was fantastic - I love the idea of a 1930's cross between Torchwood, the X Files and League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
However, I do feel it was let down by the weak acting and the rather 'plastic' feel that ITV drama often has. I can't really put my finger on it, but it all felt a little like a big budget school play, with robotic delivery of lines, iffy sets, modern language in a historical setting and everything feeling a little awkward (plus ultra slo-mo stunts) ... felt a bit like that 'Dracula' series that was on a while back. Know what I mean?
It was okay, but I think I'll pass on the rest of the episodes.

I understand what you mean.
Like most ITV stuff, it seems a little 'Kids Tv' and could do with a more dark feel to it.
Too clean and 'safe' I suppose.
I will persevere with it though as it may work out pretty well, if only for inspiration.

I have to disagree with the last two posts. I think that many of the faults listed by cubs (
with robotic delivery of lines, iffy sets, modern language in a historical setting
) to be true of perhaps the majority of tv dramas, bbs included.
Then again, and talking of "kids tv" I find Dr Who repetitive, unintelligible and frankly boring so I'm not really in tune with current tastes I guess :D

Absolutely, I agree. But my TV time is limited, so I prefer have a list of really good stuff to work through, so 'average' shows don't usually make it onto my list!

They're all average...! :) :) :)

I didnt mean to upset the apple cart..... ;)
To be fair, most TV series are pretty much the same.
When I say kids tv I mean the overall 'look and feel' of the programme.
Thre have been several recently that I thought had a good idea behind the: Merlin, that Greek one...(?) amongst others, but they dont have a gritty feel that some others do.
Peaky Blinders was one such good example of how something could 'feel' right.
Everyone raved about Ripper Street but I found Blinders much more believable.
Like I said, I will stick with it and see how it progresses.
I like the concept, after all.
For the record: I find Dr Who very hit and miss, some episodes are good but in general I dont really bother.
Like a lot of people I do not watch much TV, I much prefer a quality DVD series box set.

Oh Paul, I never realised that you are one of the guys watching "Lord of the rings" and after the film said "this is so unrealistic, the balrog was to small and the house of the rohirrim looks to much like dark age" ;) lol
I think a lot of shows are made for a mainstream audience, so it will never satisfy us nerdy bunch of wargamers.

Paul - 100% in agreement with you on that one. I could never believe the very mannered way everyone spoke in Ripper Street. Presumably it was meant to represent Victorian speech patterns (and maybe based on Victorian writing styles) but it never rang true for me. Peaky Blinders is head and shoulders better.

Exactly - they are meant to be entertainment, not Sourcebooks or, heaven help us, Codex books, for Wargamers...

And when I met you, you did not have an axe, long hair or any arm rings.
So much for the image of 'proper' Saxons, eh...?
;D

I agree.
My only gripes are to do with the way that some TV series are like watching a children's programme when it comes to 'feel' and production ideals.
More grit is what is needed, I reckon.
:D
Still gonna watch it as I feel it may provide a little inspiration at the very least.

I really enjoyed the first Jekyll/Hyde episode. The image of the bowler hatted, suited and booted men with gas masks and guns stalking the harbinger was very striking. Richard E Grant was great too!
Agree about Doctor Who being hit and miss - thought the last episode was pants but others have been ok-ish.
-
Just watched episode 2 and for anyone into pulp this must be the best thing on telly....
