Title: The Weird Wars Painting Club - 2016-04-09 DONE!
Post by: Westfalia Chris on November 01, 2015, 09:33:00 AM
Welcome to the Weird Wars Painting Club!

As with previous painting clubs, this is a "fun" rather than "win" contest intended to get people to paint some nice items for it, and maybe rekindle some Weird Wars interest.

Edit: Due to the post length limit, I was forced to remove the main body of the rules and transfer them to a TXT you'll find attached below. If you have not previously participated in a painting club, please read the rules first before submitting an entry.

Participants who submitted an item are entitled to add the Weird Wars Painting Club Badge to their signature.

Please use this code:

Code: [Select]
[img]http://leadadventureforum.com/gallery/23/140_01_11_15_9_46_48.png[/img]
This embeds a 50px version of the badge into your signature.

This thread should be primarily used for the posting of images, but obviously some on-topic discussion is fine. Nonetheless, I reserve the right to split off or remove any discussion that veers off too much and clogs up the thread.

Q & A Section

Would converting a Ma.K be suitable painted with fitting insignia?

This is one of the grey areas. To make it clear, "proper SF3D" is scifi with a retro styling and thus not within scope, but painting them up as Weird War 2 German or Allied hardware is fine.

Would I be correct in assuming that World War 1 Halflings, Goblins and Dwarves (an established theme for which several manufacturers make miniatures) are more of an "Other Adventures" thing and therefore would not qualify for this contest?

It's more of a "Fantasy Great War", i.e. a Fantasy setting styled to resemble WW1, so it's another area where there's some overlap. I wouldn't class Flintloque as "Weird Napoleonic", either, but as "Black Powder Fantasy", so I'm afraid Fantasy variants are out of bounds for this one. Sorry for that.

Okay, then I'm going to start off with the first entry. A nice opportunity to continue with my "Projekt X" project which grinded to a halt many years ago.

Hrm... I missed all the other painting contests during my "LAF gap years" and would love to participate in at least one... I don't actually do Weird Wars so I hope I wouldn't elbow aside anyone doing their own Weird War project by entering a one-off or two. A hundred entries is a lot, after all.

Now to see if there's anything at all in the lead pile that could suit this purpose. I'm kicking myself for not buying some of those 15mm Gear Krieg mechs when DP9 was temporarily selling them again for the month of October.

Would I be correct in assuming that World War 1 Halflings, Goblins and Dwarves (an established theme for which several manufacturers make miniatures) are more of an "Other Adventures" thing and therefore would not qualify for this contest?

Sorry for that.

That's alright, I was assuming for that to be the case anyway and just wanted to make sure.

It would be a nice theme for another contest, though, and I'll keep it in mind for the future.

#004: Elsa, the She-Wolf (carefully turned to not show naughty symbols).  Pulp Nazis are about as Weird War as I get, I think.  I don't believe I have ever posted her and her crew - I first painted her years ago, but I sat down and retouched them last week to update them from the monochrome paintjobs I used to do, so that they didn't look so bland next to newer acquisitions.

It's more of a "Fantasy Great War", i.e. a Fantasy setting styled to resemble WW1, so it's another area where there's some overlap. ... Sorry for that.

Darn. Just happened to be what was on my workbench...

#010 Nazi Vampire

Finally a chance for me to paint the most archetypical of Weird War monsters: Nazi Zombies!

The only problem: I don't have any. But after a bit of rummaging in the old Mount Lead, I found this fellow I bought ages ago but never got round to paint.

So here's a Nazi Vampire:

(http://i53.photobucket.com/albums/g45/Zemlod/Weird%20Wars/nazivamp.jpg) (http://s53.photobucket.com/user/Zemlod/media/Weird%20Wars/nazivamp.jpg.html)

Question to the mods: How inclusive do you see the Weird Wars theme? I have a couple of WW1 Goblins and Halflings from Black Hat; would those be weird enough?

Please see the first page, we had that discussion there. Short version, WWx-flavoured Fantasy is out for this club.

Such great and above all inspirational entries so far! Loving every one of them!

Fool that I am, I decided to do some converting on that one Weird War figure I own. Not going so well, and now I can't undo the damage. Modelling putty hates me. Let's see if maybe I can bodge something together before the contest reaches 100 entries :)

On the subject of "WWx fantasy", I think some of the confusion just stems from divergences in terminology and categorisation within the hobby. Hasslefree market their Kindred and Kollektiv as "Weird War Halflings" and "Weird War Dwarves". But I agree with the ruling that "Gas-and-Trenches Fantasy" is a separate theme from "Weird War".

Wow, sorry. I hate to be /that guy/... I was absolutely certain I'd read the rules....  Well, that's what you get for sitting in the office all day and replying to emails that people should just go and read the rules. Literally all day. Well, I think there's still al slice of humble pie somewhere in the fridge. Probably not too bad if I microwave it with some HP sauce... ;)

@ Dr. The Viking: I like your version far better. Much better contrasts and more precise on the brushstrokes. Also the fangs are much better visible :)

Tried to get a bit more of a battleworn appearance with this one but its looking a bit to shiny. I may go back in and do a bit more work to dirty it up.

I loved this model when I first seen it. I would have loved to get a resin master copy version, I don't think the medals or the belt are quite as good as the original. The face sculpting is still amazing!

Very nice painting, but I cannot help thinking, the anatomics are a bit off in this sculpt? Something about the position of the arms (especially the raised one - if I raise my arm like that, my shoulder comes very near to my ear, whereas the left shoulder on the mini looks like in a relaxed position).

As the guys said, you may post any number of entries, but only one entry within 24 hours. Also, entries should be reasonably different from each other, so no posting one member of a squad each day. That's boring and not in the contest spirit.

Also, would everybody please remember that the picture should ideally be a single file. I don't have the time right now to rework multiple-file entries before uploading them to the gallery so will choose one which I consider the best of the lot.

Finally, there may only be a single figure as the focal point of the entry. Do not use other figures for scale comparisons or the like, but I'll probably let it slide if the item is visibly "part of the backdrop".

So much coolness in all the entries since I last posted in this thread! My entry is painted since a few days back, I just can't seem to find a good opportunity to take a proper, high-quality, immersive photo, so I might have to settle for a more rudimentary one.

Say, Prof, are there more photos online anywhere of the terrain/scenery you've been using as backdrops in your photos in this thread?

Amalric,
It may well have been the Locknar, the files were mostly destroyed in a strange conflagration but there were rumours of a Captain Sternn being involved!

Thanks, Paul :) wanted to have it more natural. The good thing about these Götterdämmerung were-things, you can use them for other settings (fantasy and like) as well. Especially that werebear would make a pretty monster for my next Dungeon game.

Well, christmas time crunch has prevented me from taking an immersive "in-world" photo of the sort I really like to see myself. I also had a setback which left me with no choice but to use a very old, substandard digital camera. And the uniform colour looked less blue and a lot more feldgrau-y to me when I mixed it. But here goes.

Thanks! I'm afraid I sculpted the mask myself out of ProCreate - I wish I had ten more of those heads myself now! The horns started life as a pair of narrow sword blades. I was trying to mimic the Nur-Ab-Sal imagery which is so prevalent in Indiana Jones and the FoA, a game which has become a very fond childhood memory for me.

I'd love to have the mask and horns be a running theme in multiple projects/settings of mine (swords-and-sorcery, VSF, 30s pulp, weird wars, retro sci-fi, etc) but it would require that I get into the casting business, for which I lack both the expertise and the budget. Ah well, maybe some day.

Constable- great stuff! 8)

Fiona-from what I can tell your painting looks good. I would try taking a photograph on a plain white sheet of paper. If you want to be even fancier, you can download and print off a background from the net.

This might help as well. There's a wealth of info in the 'How to' section of the forum.

Cool figure fiona! Any chance we can have another photo please to see your awesome brush work.

Looks like the auto focus was the problem? The backdrop is certainly nice and sharp.
Perhaps the figure was too close to the camera to focus on? Moving back a little further (15cm?) might help, you can always crop the image before posting on the net.

Cheers

Thanks - I'll probably make a new thread for the extra pictures.  :)

The camera's closeness is a distinct possibility, but from a further distance I can't get it to focus on anything other than the crotch or shoulders of whatever mini I try to take a pic of, so it blurs every part except those.

No.93 - Some Sunny Day

Private, 1st (Armoured Airborne) Battalion, Royal Ulster Rifles. Operation Marmite, Obersalzberg, July 1946.

As you know, Operation Marmite was the code name for the final assault on the Alpenfestung. A combined operation involving British, French, American, Soviet and Free German forces against the last Nazi holdouts; it was costly, but ultimately successful. The last copy of Hitler's brain-pattern was captured when the RUR secured a mostly-intact Robo-Hitler by taking out its legs with sustained PIAT fire. The matrix card containing the brain-pattern is on display in the Tower of London to this day.

Our weary private breathes a sigh of relief, knowing it is finally over and he has survived to the end. He is clad in a Mk.II Robinson suit and armed with a PIAT-Bren. The Mk.I Robinson suits were simply repainted German suits captured in North Africa. The Mk.II replaced the sophisticated but volatile German fusion core with the less powerful but more reliable British fission core. The Mk.III was an entirely British design. Arriving too late to be deployed in WWII, it won fame in the Korean War of 1950-75.

(Figure: Projekt X conversion, purchased from Scarab Miniatures. Head by Artizan Designs.)

We'll meet again,
Don't know where, don't know when,
But I know we'll meet again, some sunny day.

#097 The Very Reverend Lieutenant-Colonel Harold ‘Stinker’ Pinker, commander of the S.V.S. (Special Vampire Service), motto ‘Who Stakes, Wins’.

(http://i1352.photobucket.com/albums/q645/Mad_Lord_Snapcase/Vampire%20015_zps5d0b7sfu.jpg) (http://s1352.photobucket.com/user/Mad_Lord_Snapcase/media/Vampire%20015_zps5d0b7sfu.jpg.html)

Now resident in Totleigh-in-the-Wold, ‘Stinker’ attended Magdalen College, Oxford where he boxed and played Rugby football and later played Rugby for England, a very muscular Christian (according to ‘Stiffy’ Pinker, née Byng). Whilst in hospital in Alexandria recovering from wounds received on an undercover mission to Axis-occupied Transylvania in 1943, 'Stinker' conceived the concept of the S.V.S. An elite unit specially trained to combat Vampires and the Undead in Mitteleurope. Using the unique knowledge and training of Professor Edwin Van Helsing (son of the late Abraham Van Helsing) the unit have scored some notable successes on Axis Vampires in the region. Argh!  I've been working overtime lately, and although I have many minis 'almost' done, it'll be a race to nab a final three spot!  (especially with the Prolific Professor about!)

Superb last few entries, by the way.

Haha, nice one prof. There is a very nice lightfall you've painted into those figures, the blacks have turned out lovely.

Cheers

Cheers! The next painting club will start right after the LPL. And I'm afraid it won't be Fantasy  :)

Great looking models all around.  It seems I'm always months behind when I get a hankering for a particular genre.  Maybe next time.  These painting clubs are very inspiring even without having taken part.  Thanks all for sharing your projects.
