Title: New Star Wars speeder - perfect for 28mm
Post by: JollyBob on November 01, 2015, 09:22:43 PM
Forced to go to Blackpool, I consoled myself with looking at the new Star Wars toys in the Disney Store while The Boy was stocking up on Cars characters. And I found this little beauty:

(http://i205.photobucket.com/albums/bb155/GrunterPulpit/Landspeeder_zpstxlzosls.jpg~original) (http://s205.photobucket.com/user/GrunterPulpit/media/Landspeeder_zpstxlzosls.jpg.html)

This is a First Order Snowspeeder, apparently.

For all it supposed to be the new slick modern face of the Empire, it has a real used look to it (a bit like the Mule from Serenity I think).

Pictured here with a (shamefully unpainted) Hasslefree mystic knight, it scales up almost perfectly with 28 - 32mm figures, probably would take a crew of four. It could stand a few mould lines scraped off, a little bit of fill here and there in the joins, and a few details picked out but other than that its pretty much good to go, and comes with its own flight stand. Nice chunky diecast piece it is too, so should stand up to typical gamer cackhandedness.

Oh, and did I mention the price?

£7.95

Yeah, you read that right. Less than eight quid.

Get in.  8)

Thanks.

I don't, I'm afraid, but all the new variously scaled spaceship models come in fairly plain red boxes with large clear Windows.
There's only three of them that I saw, and this is the only one that scales for 28mm, although there's a TIE fighter that might work for 15mm.

There is also Kylo Ren's shuttle, but I didn't get a good look at that as The Boy had found the talking Emperor Zurg that he's not supposed to see till Christmas so I had to go and distract him with other shineys.

I picked up the jetbike from the trailer, the micro machines one, and its perfect for 15mm.

That looks good...and even more curious, does this mean there may be a line of 28mm scale-esque SW coming?  Could be very useful, even if just for kitbashes.  Hope the scales are all similar.

Certainly looks quite ubiquitous. I bet it's going be something like 30 euros in the local toy stores tho so I would have to buy even this online...

No Disney store near me, but these are $9.95 US from them online. Reasonable shipping too.

Anyone near a store that can check out the rest of the line for comparability? There are TIE fighters, X-Wings, a Y-Wing, Slave 1, AT-AT, the new Shuttle, and the new speeder bike in the line.

I think that's the only other suitable one at the moment, like a lot of diecast they might be made to fit a standard box, so the X wing, etc are likely more suitable for smaller scales.

:? possibly.. I may have gotten a little excited.

But it would be about the same size as a eureka SAS dirt bike.. It certainly wouldn't be movie scale.

Ok, just bought one on my local Disney Store. The nice part is that they are marked with their price in the UK/US/Europe. So I paid €12,90 (the equivalent to £7,95) and that's supposed to be the price across all their European stores.

Wow, wasn't expecting such a clamour!  lol

After thinking about it for a few days, I've decided that the blaster on the front annoys me as it is made of very springy, rubber like plastic. I think I may try to replace it with a spare from the Dreamforge Eisenkern kit, and give it a more rigid mount.

Not likely to happen soon, but one of these days...

Off the Amazon page:
Quote
Measures about 5"

So far I've bought 3 different Luke Speeders, and they're all either too large or too small, even though some of the descriptions suggest they would work with 28mm ::)

The one you linked to seems to be too large though; Wookiepedia has the speeder at a length of 3.4 meters, so yours would be about 1:27 scale...

What models are out there, like the Revell kits, that can be used for Imperial Assault?

Never heard of "Disney stores" before. I assume there are none here in Sweden, but maybe I'm just out of the loop. Surely this kind of thing has to show up in ordinary toy stores as well, though...?

A friend asked for a scale shot so I took a couple using figures that most people would easily recognise. Also that didn't have tabs or bases. Thought you guys might find them useful too.

Thanks for the scale comparison pic Dewbakuk!!!!!

I'd say its a 'big' car.. it looks like it scales with 1:43 diecast cars rather than 1:56 if thats your thing, and its a 3 seater speeder.
That said, I agree with Paul and James that a canopy and more detrius will make it look pretty good. :)

With all the comments about what people are planning to change on them, I am definitely having thought around a "brown water navy" look for them.

Think Star Wars does Apocalypse Now....

Picked up two of these this morning in the Disney store in Glasgow :D Was sorely tempted to buy at least one more, but managed to resist.

@Agis - I assume you asked, but they weren't on the main display wall when I looked. They were shoved in a floor level stand, and if I hadn't been looking for them I wouldn't have known they were there.

The amount of stuff being brought out for the new film is quite staggering. It's annoying that the scales are all over the place with most of it. I saw a couple of micromachines kits - one where a snowspeeder was about half the size of the AT-AT and another where the TIE fighter was about a quarter the size of the millenium falcon.

Most inconsiderate. What we need are some gamers designing these things ;D

Looks fantastic, thanks DBK. Should be in a Disney Store myself, tomorrow. I hope they've got them in.

Canopy sounds like a good idea, but I don't know if I'd trust my scratchbuilding abilities. And after reading a new book about Operation Loyton, I'm hankering to build up some futuristic special forces with 'hover-jeeps'.

No worries. See I'm not thinking of it as a 'car' at all, I see it as an attack/knife boat. As such the size is about right for a 4 man crew: two in the seats, the gunner and there is room for another in the space between, I'd go for a down on one knee figure acting as a spotter/rifleman. If you took the gun out you'd gain a fair bit of space up front and then it could be a 6 man transport, no problem.

Got two of 'em. We hardly need another scale shot, but here y'go. A couple of Heresy troopers, and the squad support weapon that I might try bodging on in place of the bendy plastic gun.

(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5797/22573682208_1970304640_o.jpg) (https://flic.kr/p/AoL2go)

It's not the only thing I might replace. The seats, rails, and steering column/driver's console/turny thingy are all bendy plastic, and either slightly deformed, not very well cast, or shoved in a bit haphazardly. Don't suppose I can blame the poor Chinese workers for not taking their time, but I think I'll refix some of those, and find a lump of rod or wire to replace the rails.

It is a nice looking, reassuringly solid piece of metal, tho. :)

As I dont intend to use them for their original purpose I am considering ripping out all the bendy stuff anyway and working from there.
That sturdy die cast frame works well on its own with plenty of scope for conversion.

'Local' Disney store is in KC, and I'm a bit old for 650 Km return roadtrips for a few toys, even if every Recruits con ends up being just that...  ;)

However, I'm noticing Target is advertising 'Disney Store' on their website. I'll have to check out the local 'Tar-Zhay.'

Thanks, as well!
