Strange Aeons at Poldercon 2016 (The Netherlands) – Cabin in the Woods
Next year will be the second edition of Poldercon in the Netherlands and this year I will be hosting participation games for Strange Aeons. What can you expect?
*Play a game as Threshold or Lurkers and learn the game mechanics within 90 minutes.
*See what Strange Aeons is all about and why it’s such a great game to play with your mates.
*Play with three other people at the same table: play a game, roll some dice and have fun.
*Get drawn into the mystic world of the Cthulhu mythos and see why it’s one of the best genres for miniature gaming.
During the game I will host four games with a fixed scenario. During each game there is room for 2 Threshold players and 2 Lurker players. I will explain the rules to all new players and you have all the time to play and complete the scenario. Afterwards I will explain the campaign system and give examples on how the story could continue. This will show you the true strength of the game.
As a player the only thing you need to bring along are your good spirits and a smile (and maybe a goat to sacrifice to the Old Ones, that always comes in handy!).
If you are interested in joining the games, keep an eye on http://www.poldercon.nl/. Starting on November 15 you can register for the event and pick what games you want to play. Strange Aeons will be amongst these options!
During the next three months I will update this topic with pictures of the scenery and miniatures I will bring along. I need to finish some more stuff for the event (yes, I could take along the painted stuff I have…but what fun is that?) and you can see the progress here.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

Have dice, will play ;)
-
Please do share more!
-
Can't wait to see what comes of this! :D :D :D Be sure to document it all! Documentation is key!!!
-
I'll post pictures of the finished cabin tonight...

Cabin in the Woods...and Col. Marbles
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/cabin.jpg)
This is the plastic ACW house by the Perries and I think it's perfect as a spooky cabin in the woods. The paintjob was straight forward and not too complicated. I added some moss to the roof to make it look older and like it belongs in the woods. There are some greenish washes here and there on the woodwork, but they seem to be too subtle for the photo.
Next up will be some Threshold agents!
-
That is a great finish on that cabin.
It looks spot on for your intended use.
:-* :-*
I had one and sold it ages ago, regretting that now having seen yours.
:'(
(And Marbles looks bloody brilliant too, must get me one of them...).
-
Love this concept already! And that cabin looks great as always!
-
Bloody good beginning, if you ask me! :-*
-
I love the concept- could you post a rough outline of the scenero and how you have balanced the models?
-
Wow, that has been AGES but time for an update. Poldercon is next weekend so that is a tight deadline. But I'm almost done and preparations are almost done. Yeah!
Here's the new stuff:
Character - Agent Smithers
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/character.jpg)
Agent - Agent Bowers
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/agent3.jpg)
Agent - Agent Jensen
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/agent4.jpg)
Mi-Go
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/migo.jpg)
The shed
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/shed.jpg)
Pile of logs
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/logging.jpg)
Woodshed and chopping block
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/woodshed.jpg)
Rickety fences
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/fences.jpg)
Spooky Trees 1
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/spookytrees1.jpg)
Spooky Trees 2
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/spookytrees2.jpg)
I only need to finish a mud road, a fishing pond and the hermit. Then it's all done!
-
Wonderful!
I love the colour palette that you have used, so consistent.
Nice, subtle conversions, too
:-* :-*
-
Good stuff :D
You will show us pics of the game as I am looking forward to seeing it and will not be at poldercon
Thanks
-
Size of the gaming surface? Can we see a setup?
-
@Vagabond: Of course!! My Nexus 6P makes excellent photos 8)
@Wally: it will be 3'x3'. And once it's all finished I will do a shot with everything together :).
And to come back on your prior question (sorry, totally missed that one!), I made four 15 point lists...2 Lurker lists and 2 Threshold lists. So it will be a 2vs2 game. The scenario will be a slightly modified version of "The Hermit".
-
I appreciate your documentation, how you have shown the product your working on and how you intend to use it- this is a very useful post and some of the best work on this sub forum.
-
Wow Mal!!! This looks amazing so far! All brilliant but I really like the fences...can't wait for more!!!
-
exelent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
love your spooky trees and the kabian and all the rest
the agent with axe is he a conversion?

Hi Malebolgia
Sorry dont want to derail this thread but in the related topics there is a link to a previous Ducosim and your web site. I have been to your web site but can not find the links to your games, you have some amazingly well painted minis there but to be honest I am more interested in your games and I can not find them!! I know they are there because another link in your LAF post goes directly to a game but I can not get from that to the rest of the games.
Can you point me in the right direction.
Thanks
-
This is just splendid! Love what you have done with the Perry's wee house. :-* :-* :-*

Yeah, I changed my website and didn't include gaming reports because they were very hard to do on the new pages. But the links still work:

Just read the first one, and enjoyed it. Will read the others tomorrow when I am more awake.

Yeah, me too! Good stuff. Could only be better if you recorded it...but then you would have to do the voices. lol
I must ask, why do I always seem to root for the "Lurkers" when I read a Strange Aeons batrep? ::)

Mud Road
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/scenery/road.jpg)
The Hermit
(http://paintoholic.nl/images/hermit.jpg)
And the much needed mud road. It's canvas + caulking and the idea is that it's a mud road that...ends. So the end of the road...literally! It's 18" long, so ends in the middle of the table, right next to the cabin.
The Hermit is the infamous model by RAFM. I think it's the best Mythos related model ever made and everybody should own one. He's just so perfect with his silly pose, excellent sculpted face and bewildered look. Gave him a logger's shirt, thought that would be fitting for a hermit living in the woods.
Only thing left to do is the fishing pond.
-
Ha- so your responsible for those battle reps! Great work, they are a big part of why I am "here"! I love the first set- great work!
Second- the Hermit is one of my favorites- mostly because it "feels" like an investigation gone wrong rather than a warhammer battle/
Your choice of model is perfect- I love the "range" of models you can use for the old man in that scenerio- from cult leaders to tiny old men and their horrible summoned minions-
-
I am registered for game no.3 at Poldercon this Sunday. Looking forward to it.
If it is as good as your Pulp Alley game last year (and I have no reason to doubt that) it should be a great gaming exprience.

Love that shirt!!
:-* :-*
You are right: I do HAVE to get that figure at some point, or make something in a similar vein....
:D
-
@WallyTWest: Wow, that is awesome to hear. Thanks for the feedback
@Finnegan: Cool, can't wait to play the game with you!
@Mason: Ha! I dare you...looking forwards to seeing that sculpt 8)
-
And...we're...done!!
Finally finished the fishing pond. Was a bit more work than I thought and working with resin for water is always a bit exciting. But it's done and I'm really happy with the pond. Exactly how I wanted it to be!
Fishing Pond

And I also built up the table so I know how to set it all up once the chaos starts on Sunday. Did a shot for you guys:

Next update will be next week with pictures of the games and the people. So stay tuned!!
-
Can't wait, great looking table and miniatures btw.
-
Coming along nicely
-
Holly Cow!!!!
-
Very cool! The pond with the leaves is the perfect touch to put it over the top IMO. I looked at resin a few times to make a marsh to make one...not as nice as your pond but I just got lazy and bought one off of eBay already done. :)

That is one sweet looking table! Anyone playing on that is truly lucky. 8) 8) 8)
-
Yes, great looking table. Looking forward to the game tomorrow.
-
The pond looks great, giving a real feeling of depth.
The stool and fishing line is a really nice touch too.
:-* :-*
-
A nice creepy table, the little details (leaves on the water, moss on the roof) really add to the atmosphere.
-
I'm not going to play it, but I will say hi and take pics, that is for sure :)
-
Found that, looks great :

Malebolgia very nice board and terrain! :)
-
I had a very nice game today. Thans again Marijn.
And yes, the table is amazing.
-
After having played 1st edition SA a couple of years ago, I had my first taste of 2nd edition SA yesterday.
And it tasted great! Thanks for another excellent game Malebolgia! An awesome gaming table filled with great miniatures, together with quick reference guides to keep the game running smoothly. :)
I think everyone who was lucky to have enjoyed your game had a blast yesterday. 8)
Cheers!
-
Marijn, I can only repeat what has been said above. It was a fast and fun packed game, great table and I really admire your painting skills. Too bad that last cultist got away ;)
-
Thanks guys...I also had a blast. Great players and great games. Each game went differently and in every game there were different 'stars'. The players also picked up the rules very fast and we had lots of laughs all around. And that's always a good sign!
Here are pictures of the games in progress:
The table setup. Easy to do after "dry fitting" it at home. Also displayed lots of stuff next to the game to show what it all has.
Agent Smithers duking it out with the Mi-Go (who is plain nasty in close combat due to the high CON). A very fast, but interesting first game.
Start of the second game...Threshold is rushing in while the Cult is terrorizing the poor hermit.
The Mi-Go and Cultist with shotgun try to stall the agents, but their aim is poor...
While the youngest Cultist present at Poldercon plots his retreat, special agent Roon tries to stop the Cultist while he is running away. The ending is tense with the Cultist going Face Up close to the edge of the table (he was the last man standing). But in the end he barely manages to escape, while the rest of the Cult was slain.
In the third game we had four sides (with me playing one group of Lurkers...containing a proxy because I forgot the Snakeman at home! >:(). This was also the only game using the event cards. Which were fun, but...
...Divine Intervention proved to be a tough cookie! It was played twice on Threshold Characters which was a big bummer for the Cult.
The Cult tries hard to stall Threshold, while the Cultist with knife keeps on harassing the hermit. Took 4 turns to get the info out of him!
But in the end he manages to get to the edge of the table...and the dastardly Jan plays a...Divine Intervention on him! Apparently he was protected by Cthulhu and he could get away. Threshold was close...very close.
And forgot to take some good pictures of game 4!
A shot with an overview of the con. Lots of great people, lots of great games and a fantastic atmosphere. Awesome day.
Thanks to all the players for the great games and thanks to Poldercon for a fantastic event. It was a blast 8).
-
Excellent looking games - the table is everything it should be. Felt sorry for the young cultist - he looks mesmerized by the awesome table in front of him. o_o o_o
Please you had a good day, is a big reward for all the effort you put into the game. :D
-
This all looks amazing! I love your collection of stuff...that Mi-Go is especially colourful! As always, thank you for all your beautiful effort, Mal!
-
Amazing...
-
Pure eye candy at its best.
:-* :-*
It also looks like great fun was had all round.
Strange Aeons at its best.
:D
-
Wonderful !

You could use these photos for "how to demo a Wargame", they are that perfect.
