Title: Source for or Alternative to Marx Cars of the Future?
Post by: Hupp n at em on November 13, 2015, 06:35:47 AM
I've been playing Fallout 4  :-*  and I noticed there are a lot more cars in the game this time around, in a greater variety and all in that retro-futuristic Jetsons style.  I have some KinSmart 50's (historical) diecasts, but nothing to represent the nuclear cars of Fallout; I know that one ebay seller has been picked clean by you, my fellow LAFers, but has anyone found another source?  And are there any alternatives to the Marx cars out there?

Disney CARS toy range has several vehicles you can use.

Im in a similar boat regarding the Marx cars.

There is 2 for sale in the SALES board if you're interested at 15 pounds each.

Otherwise...

Option A
A large plastic recast 50's cadillac
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/50s-Recast-Marx-Cars-Five-Inch-Set-Of-Three-Lot-3-/291586011554?hash=item43e3e171a2:g:ipYAAOSw5ZBWGKrC

Option B
A diecast pullback Chevy
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/281158913762?_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

Option C
As brumbie suggested a smaller option would be Doc Hudson, and Sheriff
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Mattel-Disney-Pixar-Cars-Doc-Hudson-Diecast-Toy-Car-Rare-1-55-Loose-New-P8-/281323210209?hash=item41802b85e1:g:QycAAOSwY45UQPUH

Or, extra recasts that anyone is willing to share ;)

Cheers
Matt

I would second Disney cars. I have used them before and generally they scale well with 28mm. There are the odd exceptions sop your are best eye balling the car first before you buy. The funny eyes are usually just painted on and the bumper/mouths are easy to cover with Green Stuff. there are a few old fashioned cars in the range which I would think would suit the period and style you are after.

Another vote for the CARS range, zvezdas doc hudson model is brilliant and really nice to paint.

Cheap as chips, too.

Regarding the Disney Cars. If you want to be cheap then McDonalds did a range of them which suit 28mm scale and probably go for cheaper than any model or toy set. The ones which I have are all McDonalds ones, though yes, obviously the detail suffers, but who cares?

Looking at the Marx cars which I have, I kind of wonder if someone could just vacuum model them? They look simple enough to do, but its having the equipment. =/

Browse sites that sell 1/43 die-cast cars.
If you're Lucky, you might find a Messerschmitt kabinenroller (KR200) or a BMW Iszetta which are good proxies for Fallout's Fusion Flea Supreme.
For trucks you want to look for ERTL's 1950 Chevy cabover
The 1948 Tucker Sedan and Torpedo would also fit in this setting IMO, as does a 1950 Studebaker.

Also, I recently found this toy for only a couple of € :
Will need some converting to transform in a Flea. The clear tube and minion figure dislodged rather easy  :)

I'd suggest diecasts as well.  There is such variety and so many makers that you can locate your dream car/vehicular nightmare from any period at 1/43 scale with relative ease.  Diecasts are sturdy compared to most gaming and display models, are cheap, and are finely detailed to appeal to toy car collectors.  Pure hobby goodness.  Keep your dremel nearby if you want to conduct major mods though; Proper tools for the job make them a breeze.

Toy car collectors seem more common than tabletop gamers.  I have been able to pick up diecasts locally from online trading forums and even from the local truck stops.  To find particular vehicles you will have to broaden your search but there is quite a lot to be had.

Think about what scale you want as well.

1:43 die-casts are much bigger than Disney Cars die-casts, and the Disney cars kits/Macdonalds plastics are toward the 1:43 scale.

Marx cars of the future appear to be on the large side of real world automobiles, but the corvega is a big beast anyway. So perhaps that is not an issue after all.

If you go 50's cars, a little straws/styrene and greenstuff should get pipes and what not quite close to what you want.

I've decided to go with 3 die-cast pullback toys and mod them from there into something resembling a corvega.

Perhaps another option is the Plastiville O scale cars, very similar to the Marx 50's range, not sure on range or price, there is a short example/tutorial on using them in gaming here.

Not cars so much - but I was browsing the web and I saw this:

https://www.scalemates.com/kits/194383-revell-1420-gas-truck (https://www.scalemates.com/kits/194383-revell-1420-gas-truck)

I think OOP but still available on ebay - they say it is 1/48 but I've also seen it described as 1/43. The trailer seems to have the right look. And at 10 inches long it would be a nice piece.

Revell also do an Honest John Missile and Truck - described as 1/54 it is apparently actually 1/48 and I'm sure it could be the basis of a kitbash, as the Kenworth rig doesn't really have the look we're seeking.

Just came across an ebay listing for a set of Marx Cars (US seller).
Figured there'd be some people interested in them :

Huh, maybe I should make a mold and cast plaster versions if I want more of them...that price is ridiculous.
