Not sure if any of you have read the urban fantasy called Monster Hunter International, but I highly recommend it.
It's (so far) a 5 book series written by Larry Corriea. Basically it's just B-movie action in words. There are Vampires, Werewolves, Hunters, guns, trolls, etc. etc.
Anyhow, as to not try to scare you away already, I've decided to start a project based in that universe, and I thought I'd share my progess as I go...
First up are just some 'field agents' for the Monster Control Board. They are the Government faction who's main objective is to keep monsters secret. Copplestone sculpts from EM4 Miniatures. Still fantastic even by todays standards, and down right cheap! These are just 'tabletop' standard, as I just wanted to get back into the swing of painting. Before these, I haven't painted anything for THREE years.... :'(
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4tcu5OuktgE/VkPTIb11aaI/AAAAAAAAASY/hG3SbnkbAo4/s1600/mcb.jpg)
And some more agents, in Hazmat suits:
These are from Hasslefree. Simple paint again, with a simple 'concrete' style base.
Monsters come in all shapes and sizes in the books, from 10,000 feet tall Great Old ones, to simple gnomes (who happen to love Rap music). Sasquatch fits somewhere in the middle. Not a prominent beast in the series, but they have gotten a few mentions, so I wanted to include them: I'm thinking these are Pontoonier miniatures, but I haven't been able to confirm that.
And the red one mid stride:
And some Wips....Just a pack of Werewolves just begging for attention! A mix of manufactuers here, Fenris, Reaper, Darkson Designs and SoTR I believe.
More information can be found at my newly revived Blog, Please check it out, as I plan on updated far more frequently than had been.

I also plan on at least sharing the highlights here.
Thanks for reading!!!

Very nice. One of the favorites of My Particular Herd of Nerds
-
Nice sasquatch! Inspired by War of the Gargantuas? Good to have you back!
-
Excellent stuff Vikey! Good to see you painting again, always liked your style and choice of miniatures. I really like the orange on those hazmats and the suits are very well done too.
-
I like your painting! A nice selection of miniatures as well. (Those leftmost, larger werewolves, what make are those?)
I've never heard of the Monster Hunter International series, but seeing this has piqued my interest...
-
It's so good to be back and painting!! I forgot how much I enjoy it!
Thanks for the kind words.
@Modhail The leftmost Werewolves is a Reaper one. He's HUGE!, Sorry about the poor pic, I'm about 1/2 done painting him now, so I'll post better pictures soon. He did have big bracelets on, but I shaved those off and resculpted the fur.
The second to the left is made by Fenris, and another fantastic one.
More to come soon!

It's a great series that most of the family has read. My son wanted a custom chariot for a Con, so I made a MHI chariot. That's Owen and the Abomination on board...

LOL!
I love it! Thats great stuff!
-
Werewolves!
Monster Hunters International has lots of werewolves, so I figured I better start painting them for my project!

Plodding along, I finished some OLD ONES cultists called the The Sanctified Church of the Temporary Mortal condition.
And finished my first 'human' hunter for the MHI team, Sam Haven. A ex Navy Seal, and cowboy wannabe:
And starting on The cowardly Bureaucrat of the Monster Control Bureau, Doug StarK
(https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_WBpDm4b5YI/Vlt2ICXyD1I/AAAAAAAAAYY/dvKGe_gzPRw/s320/IMG_3548%2B%25282%2529.JPG)
He's described as a stocky bald man with bulldog jowels...So I added some grey stuff to Hasslefrees Costner to chub him up a bit.
Please check my blog for more info:

Really like how this is going.
-
A few works in progress:
If you ignore the Thing photobomb....These are the beginnings of Agents Myers, Franks, and Stark.
A RAFM, Foundry, and slightly converted Hasslefree
(http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ttre2sEt5s0/Vmy3-PCXR4I/AAAAAAAAAaQ/Im_IhIZOEy4/s1600/IMG_3622.JPG)
I also have started another Agent Franks (as I couldn't decide which one was better) from a HeroClix Tombstone. I added some greenstuff sunglasses.
Also, I have been working on Owen Z. Pitt, the main protaganist of the stories. He started out as a Heroclix Drax
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zijUK7TIVEM/VmIuWsxdZvI/AAAAAAAAAZk/iNtDZ3dHmQE/s1600/IMG_3547.JPG)
I wanted to add a heavily pouched armored vest, a big Kukri, and eventually a non-sci fi gun. Sculpting isn't my strong suit, but it's sure fun to try. Eventually, he'll get painted a proper Non-Green color...
Check out my blog for more...

I like Franks #2 - without the gun.
-
Love this project - a great way to use lots of different miniatures from lots of different sources, and those werewolves look wonderful. This is the sort of project that I need to sort out for myself, to get some of the lead mountain painted. Excellent work!
-
Well, It's been a bit since I updated, but I'm slowly but surely still working on this project:
Here is the Finished Owen Pitt, and a good start on Trip Jones, another fantastic character from the series.
I sculpted the dreads on Trip, using Hasslefree's Giant character:

More additions to my MHI project.
Werewolves (again)
Heather Kerkonen, former deputy, now a special forces Werewolf conscripted by a uber secret government organization.
An undead werewolf I'm using as a 'damaged' werewolf. Here he is with Owen Pitt. I call him Cecil Huffman, in honor of the werewolf Pitt killed. He was also Owen's boss.
And lastly, a little orc, that just so happens to also be MHI's ace Helicopter pilot.
Skippy
(https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-A-nEiYcEwrk/VuX65Jm09qI/AAAAAAAAAkQ/jHFAWHCSKe0SyycGW_AfrWzrY-H2ZABFA/s320/IMG_3722.JPG)

That Owen Pitt is fantastic mate! Terrific conversation. I thought it was an authentic sculpt and was about to ask where I can get one 8)

Looking great so Far Supervike, I started out on this, but was having trouble finding the main characters. This inspires me to get it rolling again.

I'd love to see what you come up with!!

Cool ideas on the conversions. I've read the first two books. What rules do you plan to use?

Our group has been playing a Monster Hunters RPG since the summer. We have been using Savage Worlds. This evening I just ran the first meeting between the player characters and the elves n the Enchanted Forest.
-
Really cool models and the conversion on Pitt was really impressive. I've never heard of the Monster Hunter setting but really enjoyed Vampire$ and the Carpenter film that came out of it.
-
Cool! I didn't even realize they did an RPG game on the books. :)

Cool! I didn't even realize they did an RPG game on the books. :)
There actually is a Monster Hunter's RPG which, I think, uses the "Hero" system.
We use the Savage Worlds system along with their Horror and Cthulhu supplements to generate monsters. It plays easily and flows smoothly both as an RPG system and a wargame system. Some of our more creative players have generated sheets/cards with various weapon and armor load outs.

Haven't really shored up the rules yet. I do want something easy and fast moving though.
I bought the MHI RPG, but I'm not a roleplayer. I just liked the art and wanted to support the MHI world.....
I've kind of put this project on hold for a month or so, but should be at it again soon.
I'm working on a Earl Harbinger character now.
Thanks for all the comments, and I love hearing ideas from all of you.
-
Supervike, nice work. I really like the end result with Z. Good sculpt work. 👍
I've never heard of MHI, but after seeing this thread and reading the first chapter of the first book, I'm diving in! Lol.
Hope to see more soon.

Actually, that's exactly what I'm hoping for! The books can be very cheesy at times, but I just love them, and was hoping to spread the word about them.

Job well done then. lol
I've just started book two. Pretty good so far. I really don't like the author, but I'm enjoying his work.
Looking into figures myself. I'm thinking of getting the Terminator Genisys Resistance fighters to use as MHI personnel. With a little modification, I think they will be decent representations of the custom gear Milo makes for the company. Vamps could be anybody, so any good models will work. I'm extremely picky about my Werewolves, so I'm not sure what I'm gonna use there. Zombies are easy, since I have tons from Zombicide and Studio Miniatures.
I'm thinking of using Strange Aeons from Uncle Mike as the rule set. It's a great set of rules, and will work pretty much as is, even though it is set in the 1920's. Uncle Mike is also working on a futuristic version of the rules so, depending upon how long that takes, the new version might also be useful.
Looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Up from the grave, returns my Monster Hunter Thread!
Summer months are traditionally lots of overtime at work, and many more outside activities that preclude painting minis.
Now that frost is back on the ground, I'm picking my project back up.
I'm finally getting the finishing touches on the first version of 'Earl Harbinger'.
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y59/supervike/478e61a6-e546-4aeb-aff4-3ccf79c7dff8_zpsnxwdybg1.jpg) (http://s3.photobucket.com/user/supervike/media/478e61a6-e546-4aeb-aff4-3ccf79c7dff8_zpsnxwdybg1.jpg.html)
Although I think that one is a bit too beefy for Earl, I have found a Heroclix model that may work well for a basis. I'll post a WiP pic of that soon.
I've also dusted off a few older minis that will fit right into this setting.
A trio of Hunters:
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y59/supervike/mercs_zpswptxsk8l.jpg) (http://s3.photobucket.com/user/supervike/media/mercs_zpswptxsk8l.jpg.html)
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y59/supervike/stubbs_zpse416fqgk.jpg) (http://s3.photobucket.com/user/supervike/media/stubbs_zpse416fqgk.jpg.html)
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y59/supervike/stubbsrear_zpsmeb1tt6w.jpg) (http://s3.photobucket.com/user/supervike/media/stubbsrear_zpsmeb1tt6w.jpg.html)
The top two are originally from a small company called PLAY WAR, but are now available over at Fenris.
The stubby lil fella is an old Copplestone, which never fail to impress me. They still hold up pretty well against modern sculpts.
A couple of FrothersUnite Tank zombies join the fray, also from Fenris. Hunters need something to shoot at!!
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y59/supervike/zedtanks_zpsejry58zb.jpg) (http://s3.photobucket.com/user/supervike/media/zedtanks_zpsejry58zb.jpg.html)
Also, I've painted up the excellent Studio Miniatures 'classic line up' of Monsters. I got those from a nice little Kickstarter. To avoid cross posting, I'll direct you to either the Gothic Horror section here on LAF or my Blog to see how these guys are lining up.
http://supervikes.blogspot.com/
And for a rule set to finally actually start gaming with these guys, I think I'm leaning towards Ganesha Games' Fear And Faith rules.
I've not got the book yet, as tis is a relatively cheap and easy thing to get off of Amazon, so I've put it on my Christmas list. My daughters love to buy me stuff for my hobby, but never can quite figure out what to get.
So, I've put Frostgrave, Song of Blades and Hero's, and Fear and Faith on my Amazon wish list, along with heavy 'hints'....
Thanks for reading! I'd love to hear thoughts and comments.
-
Absolutely love this project!!!
Your minis are really doing the MHI books justice and I look forward to your first game with them.
I'll be interested to see which rules system you settle on too.
-
Thanks!!
A small update, as I've been working on various other projects..
Earl Harbinger is finally done.
Here he is with a Werewolf.
And with the finally finished Tripp Jones.
(actually both are missing the smiley face MHI patch. I've put a disk of putty on each one, and painted it green, but I am thinking about getting a decal of the patch instead of attempting a freehand)
And a Heroclix convert, as an alternative Earl. I added a small cigarette to the mouth and the Tommy Gun. Unfortunately, he's primed black, so not a lot to see, just the basic concept.
Still loads to do, and a sizeable Hasslefree order recently placed should help me fill out the ranks.
As always, you can see more about my project at my blog
http://supervikes.blogspot.com/
-
Finished the Earl Harbinger converted HeroClix.
He turned out more cartoonish than I intended, but I think he represents the Character better.
My freehand is horrible, so I'll wait to get some decals made for the Monster Smiley patch on the back.
Here's a picture of Earl, from the MHI RPG game:
And here's a handful more that I have in the pipeline to work on next, they'll represent various characters throughout the series.

Thanks for looking!

More updates:
The Big Bad guy in Monster Hunter International: Vendetta is a necromancer/shadow elemental/jerkwad.
He's taken the guise of a tough looking Englishman, but if he's in the shadows, he impossible to hit, and can form himself into a Shadow Demon.
Shine a bright light on him, however, and he's just another viable target.
I'll be doing another Shadow version of him, but for this version I wanted his human form as if having a light shone on him.
Next up is not really a character directly from the books, but in MHI: Nemesis, they make reference to a 'Combat Exorcist'. I really liked that idea, so I added a SMG to Artizan's cool Priest character.
He's a man of faith, but carries just it case it waivers. Plus bullets work quicker.
Lastly is the main character from the Monster Hunter: Memoirs books that have just recently come out. He's a katana using badass retired US Marine, with a penchant for hunting. Chad "Ironhand"
I'll eventually have more info on these characters on my blog, if you'd be so inclined.
Thanks for looking!! I'd love to hear opinions, or tips, or ideas, or recipes....

Love the light/shadow side idea for the necromancer!
The Chad figure is once again spot on. The inclusion of the baby chelob on the base is a nice touch.
I'm currently reading through the second Monster Hunter: Memoirs book. It's a fun romp, Ringo writes great action imo, but I have to say I like Correia's charracters better, they are a bit more relatable/likeable to me.

Yep, I'm about halfway through the 2nd Memoirs book, myself. I think it's better (so far) than the first. Chad is not a great character, but he is growing on me.
Thanks for the comments!!

So, I'm still waiting for my Hasslefree order...darn mailman had it at my house today, but somehow determined that no one was home (my wife actually was). All the mailboxes around here are located at the front of the houses, on the road, and the mailpeople just drive to each one. I have just a short driveway (maybe 30 feet), but he decided to take it back to the main post office, and leave me a slip in the box to come pick it up. Of course it was -2 degrees Fahrenheit (-18C) so maybe he just didn't want to get out of the truck. >:( >:(
But, I did score a nice find from Ebay last week, and it showed up yesterday...
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y59/supervike/hind_zps4idxsvlh.jpg) (http://s3.photobucket.com/user/supervike/media/hind_zps4idxsvlh.jpg.html)
If you are familiar with the series, you can probably guess what is going to happen with this...If not, please stay tuned!!
-
Pretty sure that is the same one I picked up.
How are you going to do the paintjob? It says red and white with a shark mouth in the book but doesn't give any other detail that I remember.
I was thinking of doing red lower and white upper myself.
Looking forward to seeing what you do.
~Eric
-
Don't be so intimidated by the freehand symbol Supervike. You painted the external circle you should be able to attack the monster smiley as well. If you break it down into the simple shapes you already have the circle in your arsenal. Just be sure your paint is quite thin and overpaint to correct lines you aren't happy with rather than worrying about getting it right in one go. Those Hasslefrees look great and I wouldn't have identified Earl as a Heroclix.
-
Thanks for the encouragement! I will give it a go. Heck, the worse that could happen is I have to paint over it.
Small update.
I have the Hind partially assembled. I'm obviously not very good with model kits. I've got some gap work to do, when it's all said and done...but it was an enjoyable way to pass a Sunday afternoon (and mostly evening).
I also was able to save my Hasslefree order from the clutches of the mailman, so I've loads more to convert and work into the setting.
Pics later!
-
Excellent work realising the concept for the shadow guy!
-
@emills..yep, I think i found a good reference pic in my MHI RPG book. Shark teeth, red...
@Christian. Thanks! He's such a fun character in the books. I gotta find a good 'shadow/smoke' elemental to help represent his shadow form.
Here's some WiP
I don't remember models being so fiddly when I was a kid and put them together. This thing makes Malifaux minis seem simple....
But, I am making progress. Hopefully, I can get it done before Christmas, when we'll really need that dining room table!! ;D
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y59/supervike/hind%20%20model_zpspa4xa9a8.jpg)
Also, my Hasslefree goodies, destined for mostly MHI related stuff. It's amazing how much they can stuff in a small, rather thin box.
Hopefully 2017 has more finishing minis, and less buying minis...
-
I think I need to pick up the RPG.
I've been thinking about using Savage Worlds Showdown for my game rules, as an aside. They are easily adaptable to pretty much any setting.
Good start on the Hind, and excellent Hasslefree haul!
~Eric
-
Lookin' absolutely spiffy!
I have no knowledge of MHI whatsoever, but I don't need that to enjoy your painting and converting. :)
-
@eric...Just downloaded Savage World rules (found a pdf online!) Looks very interesting.
@Argonor. Thanks!! It's really been a fun project for me...but I really just like sharing with other miniature lovers.
-
Cool stuff Vic
-
Thanks Hubba!
Here's my first three painted miniatures of the New Year!
From left to right, as it pertains to my MHI project.
The Hasslefree mutant is going to serve as a Nemesis soldier, a demon possessed super soldier.
The Hasslefree gal is my version of Heather Kerkonan, love interest of Earl Harbinger, conscripted into an uber secret Government project called Special Task Force Unicorn.
The Fenris Games mini is serving as a character known as Rick Armstrong, CEO of a rival Hunting Company, called Paranormal Tactical Consulting.
And here is Heather and her Alternate Ego
(https://scontent-ort2-1.xx.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/15823111_586448938226399_3049959651240735201_n.jpg?oh=550b03c7baea5622ddd24f985b94df35&oe=58EB7543)
And I did get Fear and Faith as a Christmas gift, so maybe I can shoehorn some of these characters into a skirmish game at last!
As always, you can see more information about these characters on my Blog, or even check out my Facebook page.

Looking sharp!
-
I bought the Sons of Ragnarok box set from the Others 7 Sins board game line to be some older/lower end/old school Monster Hunter type mercs. Basically they are 7 grizzled bikers with what I take to be modernized .308 russian SBR's but I guess could be auto-shotguns if you ignore the big 28mm heroic gun and take their size more literally than intended. They look pretty nice. One (Thor) has an LMG, one has a pistol and a hoodie to make him the sneaky point man/scout. One has a grackle or a crow on his shoulder (Ravens cost a lot man and they're big, yo.) and a ZZ Top beard.
https://cdna.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/001/759/268/large/michael-jenkins-gang-keyshot-render-33.jpg (https://cdna.artstation.com/p/assets/images/images/001/759/268/large/michael-jenkins-gang-keyshot-render-33.jpg)
They look like this but a smaller, a bit mushier, and in blue "zombicide" plastic. Hoodie man is missing. Not bad for $25.
-
Oh heck yeah! Those guys would fit the bill for some 'not-so-nice' hunters.
Thanks very much, they are going on 'the list'. ;)
-
Grant Jefferson...
A recurring character in the series, Grant Jefferson is a uber rich playboy type. Great close up fighter, talented with a sniper rifle, and is filled with charm and charisma. He starts the series out as Julie Shacklefords boyfriend, and slight nemesis to Owen Pitt.
Eventually Jefferson leaves the contractor world of Monster Hunting, and joins the Government version of it.
This represents him as a Monster Control Bureau Agent
(http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y59/supervike/grant%20jefferson%20mcb_zpspt9fr8ef.jpg)
And a couple of Brothers (seen here with a random Zombie) from Team Haven. Monster Hunters from the Rocky Mountain Region.
I used some Spectre miniatures for the Brothers, and a Frothers Unite leg chomping zombie.

This is my 6, 7, 8, and 9th minis painted so far in 2017.

The latest additions look good all around but the agent painted up stellar! Great looking model and you did a wonderful job with his face.
The Sons of Ragnorak palaeomerus mentioned are decent looking but he wasn't kidding the detail is softer than the renders. The fellow with the chain running off his nose looks like he blew it in the wind with tragic results :) . The other models aren't as bad but if they were planning to cast them at the quality level the chose they might have been better with more flat surfaces and leaving well enough alone.

What a great thread! MHI is one of my all time favorites and you have done this up well. I test played a MHI type game using Fear and Faith combined with the Flying Lead rules. It gave FaF the "firefight bite" it needed.
Ive been on the hunt for a suitable Luska, have you found anything that fits the bill?

This might make an okay "smallish' one at 60 feet or so.

The back half would work, But the top half would have to be replaced with a suitable shark top half.

Probably too small to work with the kraken (not sure how big that one is) but there's this economical Bones beauty:

The arms are separate IIRC (painted one stock a few months ago) for ease of conversion. Maybe combine with the tentacle bits off a "educational toy" octopus? I've seen some of those that would be about the right size for Sharky there.
Had to look up "luska" BTW. Didn't know they had a name beyond the obvious sharktopus.

Me neither till I read the books. See, they are educational :)
I forgot about that shark guy, yes he might work a toy octopus indeed.

Hiya! Thanks for the kind words.
As for the Luska, I had my eye on this one, also from Reaper:

I mentioned this on one of your blog posts, but this is great to see. I have a 15mm MHI project in the works, buying figures is as far as it's gotten though, but I have just about everything I need. I haven't tried to do the #1 bad guys from each book as I've sort of assumed my games are after or parallel to the books, but I do have all the generic creatures, from gargoyles to a zombie bear!

I'd really like to see that Chris! Get busy!! lol

I think I mentioned on your blog that I was going to use Fear and Faith too, but I didn't mention that if you haven't looked at it, the Kooky Teenager Monster Hunters supplement actually provides some useful additional rules and traits (as does the Ghost Rangers Ghostbusters-esque supplement). I was put off KTMH at first my by its obvious Buffy inspiration (I wasn't a fan of the show), but the traits are really great for characters and light comedy, things which also shine through in MHI a fair bit, like Pitt and his smart mouth (for which you can use the Smart Mouth trait from KTMH!).

In the MHI books, the monster hunters have a ace pilot to get them around quickly.
He is actually a very skilled Orc pilot with a penchant for Heavy Metal.
The helicopter they have repurposed is a Mi-24d Russian Hind, decked out with a paint job that is anything but official...

I really dislike my freehand attempt for the tail numbering, so I plan on painting over that and getting some decals.
More on my blog, if you'd care to look.
-
Tail numbers? Put a MHI logo on it.
-
I did put an MHI logo on it, closer to the wing.
Maybe I should just make that bigger!!
-
I think the hand-drawn aircraft numbers are very Skippy-ish! Maybe get some heavy metal band bumper stickers in a super-small decal size to throw on parts of it too. Or something in an orcish font.
I'm using a ninja for Edward, haven't thought about Skippy yet but was going to go with something hiding his face but then give him a bit of a greenish tinge.

I totally missed that!
