Ive been asked to make an Aphid class neff and below are shots of the progress so far.
Got a few changes to do for the lower hull but as soon as they are done I can start painting :)
Here it is upside down showing the lift wood panels.

And here it is from the top.

Beautiful!

You KNOW I'll be watching!
Excellent start, indeed.

Ooooh that's rather dashing! :-*

Dead sexy.

Thanks chaps :)

Lovely start :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Commercial availability?

Wonderful stuff :-*

Commercial availability?
Nah, probably not.

Booooo ;)
-
What Dean said :'(
-
:-* Nice build! Will you be painting it as well, or is it a build only commission?
A shame no-one is doing a proper range of these, even if in the scale of the original game, as those plastic lumps in the box simply don't do the ship designs justice.
-
Incredible! :o
Awesome job! I want one!
-
Is shaping up nicely.
-
Great start mate! :-* It seems a long time since we've had some VSF goodness to look at!
-

Fair's fair, though. My picky best friend admits with even a serviceable paint job, they can look table 'okay'. ;)
Dim possibility, but still have hopes Mars Needs Steam may resurrect its head sufficient to have some ships cast. I'm still glad there are some 15mm fellows as a result.
As for James' work, very sad the commission wasn't of several cast-worthy pieces. So say many of us...
Doug
-
I don't have the words to express my joy. It may not be for mass production but once you've made one ;) we know where to go to beg for another :D Bravo Sir ! :-*
-
Pure awesomeness indeed !
-
Thanks for the comments gents :)
I would seem that I've been persuaded (not via the forum) to look into making these into kits...
As it stands, this one is over 500mm in length and the kit will be respectively shorter.
cheers
James
-
If you don't do kits, how about blueprints?
My school club are looking to build something new in the spring.
Last year they built pirate ships (so we have 15 28mm sloops now) for "On the Seven Seas"
We already have a 28mm Minas Tirith that is about 4' tall (and about the same in width) but no LoTR players now, although lots of VSF players, so I have suggested that we bring it out as the Martian settlement of Surtis Minor in January. But we shall need some nefs...
-
Nice start! :-*
I made an Aphid in 1/72nd scale a few months ago. Working out all those angles for the deck housing was a trial for a mathematical dunce like me. o_o If you are interested in creating plans/blueprints I think there'll be a market for them.
-
For scratch modellers, there is this awesome project where a guy builds one in paper and releases PDF's to print and build your own. Might be of some use for those with scratch building skills (of which I am not one).
Page 5 shows you the files to download I believe

Love it so far.
Can't wait to see it done.
So please hurry. ;)

...
In spite of my being assigned a full compliment of ten opposable digits, this would be VERY good news. Some things are too beautiful not to be assembled, and SOMEONE would have pity on me. ;->=
Twenty inches is lovely, but a bit daunting for the table. Are you thinking, maybe, a foot? *scribble, scribble* Close to 300mm?
Doug
-
Thanks, Fergal, page 5 it is. It will save me a lot of time and brain-ache next time I build a flyer. :)
-
Great stuff James. Good to see you've not lost your VSF mojo :)
-

Anyone know Mr Peters? Know where he landed when Blitz fell? He was working on the final pieces, and it'd be nice to hear if he would share even partially done.
Doug
Edit: Also, James, it's been over two weeks; any further developments on the kit? Not expecting it to be available this quickly, just trying to keep my hopes up. lol
-
Excellent workmanship! Looking forwardb
to seeing it finished.
Setting the bar high to give us something to aspire to create ourselves!
-
Got it primed now and the wood has been stained, just waiting for colour confirmation :)

Truly a thing of beauty!
-
Splendid work Sir,
It's one of those build that's been scratching away,in the dusty corners of my old noggin for years. I wish I'd spotted the thread earlier,But I've been to busy with WW1 stuff.Had I done so I'd offered to do you a specific crew. Now I'm just wondering if I can fit the time in to build one.
Mark.
-
WOW :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*
Lovely work
-
Cracking! So what goes around the wee fence? Rope? Thin chain?
-
Incredible! :-*
Please send a couple to me! ;)
-
AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! :o :-* ;D o_o
AMAZING! AWESOME! OUTSTANDING! :D
You have outdone yourself sir! I damn near expect it to take flight!
I recently purchased a wonderful Omura Martian Airship (that looks amazingly like a Hullcutter) kit from Rusti at Crossover Miniatures http://crossoverminiatures.com/product/omura-martian-airship/ (http://crossoverminiatures.com/product/omura-martian-airship/) and this would be a perfect opponent!
If there are no plans for a kit or even blueprints, is there any chance for more commissions? ;)
-
Pure genius. :-*
-
Thanks gents :)
So what goes around the wee fence? Rope? Thin chain?
Probably some thread. They are designed for 0.8mm brass rod but I think the thread will look better.
If there are no plans for a kit or even blueprints, is there any chance for more commissions? ;)
Drop me a pm :)
cheers

Thanks fellas :)
will it be flying at salute? :-* :-*
No idea, it won't be mine for much longer :)
Finished the weathering. Just a few details, railings and remembering to bring home the fins, prop and superstructure from work and we're done :)

Mar!Vell!Ous!
:-* :-* :-*
-
Fantastic modelling James ! Real quality stuff and very desirable. Actually I would use the word 'professional' which seems appropriate.
I would mention that deck planks on cut Mars usually are supplied in standard lengths of 12.3' and the 2 butt shift system of laying the planks you have depicted is common on Mars but rarely seen on earth, so appropriate for a vessel constructed in local yards. :`
I take it you are just completing the ready use ammo lockers for the 6pdr hotchkiss guns of course ;)
Love the bottom though, a work of art in itself. :-*. Well done!
-
I want one....two......three....... :-*
A marvel Sir :)
-
Many thanks for the replies chaps :)

I LOVE these scratch built airships. It's inspired me to have a go. I doubt my efforts will be even close to this, but you've got to start somewhere I suppose :)

Finally complete. Pictures below. No kit will be forthcoming at any point whatsoever.

A true work of art :-*
-
Supercolider beat me to it. That thing could sit in a museum and not look out of place. I could never play with it, or rather let others play with it. It would have to sit in a glass case to show what is possible..
-
Well that's jolly nice!
-
Just beautiful.
-
Top job!
But to be able to create work like this!
-
That's brilliant mate! Top notch! :-*

Thanks again fellas :)

Thanks again fellas :)
I took some decent pictures last week before sending it off and I should have them edited later today.

Friad so mate, it's not worth the hassle for the very small amount of sales.
Commissions however are available ;)

A thing of beauty! :o :-*

That is truly fine sir. We need to make pulp submarine for our games and ws'll use this as inspiration!
-
Inspiring work! :-* :-*

Fantastic.
Thank you for posting the w-i-p and finished images.
Tony

Belated thanks for the remaining comments chaps :)
Work continues at the New Victoria Shipyards with two, that's right two, new Aphid class neffs... Both for different clients but I'm doing them at the same time for ease.
Most of the bits have been re-cut but there was a slight accident when most of the original parts for these two underwent some unintended modifications (I dropped a massive box on them from a large height... :'( ).
More to follow soon :)
cheers
James
-
Oh man, looking back trough this topic put me back in my place with all that 3d printing. Marvellous stuff man. :-*
-
:D I've found that myself. For some reason the liftwood quality of some vessels can't prevent the force of the heavy box following the course of gravity ;) lol
-
I love these! You know, you're pretty much at a waterline pulpy submarine model too... :-*
-
Thanks chaps :)
More to follow at the weekend I'm not working.
cheers
James
-
Looking trough this topic again for some inspiration for my miyazaki ship. ( I steal from all the greats you know) And it suddenly hit me, isn't that airscrew on backwards on your first build? :o
-
Well, I must admit I got a little despondent with these after all the damage and only faffed around with little bits but I'm back on them now and progress will hopefully be rapid (but obviously not reducing the quality).
Main hull is just about done along with the top hull. A couple more things and they can be primed ready for painting, then it'll be onto the boilers and fins etc.

Looking great James. :-*
Shame about the originals being damaged.
I still think you have to produce a kit for these...
-
You damaged them OMG!...I hope you've given yourself a stern talking to about that!
Again, excellent looking models...
-
Coming on great
Damaged bits :o
Surely a man of your talents could build a crash scene for the bits?
-
Coming together nicely. ;D
-
Thanks chaps :)
I still think you have to produce a kit for these...
I would love to but it wouldn't be worth it really :?

I did and they went in the bin :?
Starting to spray tomorrow though :)

Beautiful work as always. I've asked myself numerous times why someone hasn't jumped on the MDF/laser-cut Aeronef thing. The fairly rigid lines would make it a simple line to produce kit-wise. It would also allow a nice modular build
A) purchase frame/deck
B) purchase engine housing
C) purchase superstructure
D) purchase stabilizers/prop etc.
It'd be a simple line to produce, but I guess there must not be proper business sense there.
-
Personal preference for a kit would mean it would have to be multimedia and I've too much on the list before it to consider even doing it in the near future :)
Got some paint on and I'll be weathering this afternoon hopefully.

Most excellent, sir.
:-* :-*
It is a shame that the underside is not seen as much as the weathering on the metal areas is particularly good.
-
Yeah it is, but most likely it'll be shot out of the sky in its first game (and flip upside down, or Jim will drop a large box on it (initially aiming it at you) :D

You know him so well.
:D
It has more chance of surviving its maiden voyage, being a commission, as James wont be in control of it.
;)
-
Yup, not mine when they are complete so they can crash as much as they want ;D
(Not in transit though obviously ;))
cheers

Most encouraging :D
An extra tot of rum to the engineers and what ever the Martian workmen drink at the ship yard.

Inspiring! :-*

Looking great :)

Boiler parts arrived and I've built and sprayed the aerofoils as well (still need weathering).

It's scratch built from an EMA (Engineering Model Associates, a supplier of modelmaking materials) hemisphere, half a tube and some styrene strip and rivets.
I do intend making one and casting it for sale before Christmas ;)

These were completed ages ago and I forgot to post the pictures here.

Awesome seeing them together. ;D
-
Superb mate! :o
Are the flight stands something you made or did you buy them? Oh....and what size are they? It's something I was looking for, for the Floatel, but had to build myself.
-
Stunning work!
-
They are beautiful pieces of work :-*
-
Stunning.
-
Ooooh!
Get you and yer flash conveyances.
:-* :-*
-
I love the fact they are both clearly Aphids, but not identical - models of a Flight 1 Aphid class and a Flight 2 Aphid class, so to speak. In naval architecture terms, this is extremely realistic, especially with ship design from the late 19th century. Really nice stuff!
-
Nice! The Aphid is one of the great classic sci-fi ship designs, right up there with X-Wing Fighters and the Starship Enterprise.
-
These are fantastic!
-
Truly spiffy! I like the little differences between vessels, very realistic. :-*

The ship to the rear is more a Flight 2 Aphid class, which is likely to make the forward ship a class 3. In Frank Chadwick's original work he accounts for upgraded ships. The rear ship will be launched as Her Britannic Majesty's Martian Ship-Bumble Bee.
It's advance from first Aphids launched is an improved boiler and forward gun.
Jim has done me proud and she's an excellent example of his skill. Thank you again Sir :D
She is my jewel in the crown.

Not too shabby James,
(But I bet you can't put a fruit pastel in your mouth without chewing it.)
Worth waiting for.
Mark.
-
They are just beautiful..Great work..
-
Hey James,
Can only repeat what others have said...brilliant stuff!
BTW what diameter clear styrene rod did you use for your flyer's support?
Cheers!
-
Thanks chaps :)

Glad to hear it :)

It's 10mm acrylic rod form an English supplier (Hindleys), quite cheap, reasonable quality and in metric instead of imperial which is good.

Those are both lovely :o
-
Cracking pieces.
-
James, I went over your topic but could not find it (then again maybe I wasn't trying hard enough)....who makes the bow guns?
Thx, Johan

They look like the 12 pounder Hotchkiss on the bow and 1 pounder Hotchkiss revolver cannon at the sides, made by the Honrable Lead Boiler Suit company.

Hoping not to be a bother .... Where do you get the brass stations??????
-
One of the many on-line model boat suppliers, I can't remember which one I'm afraid as I just shopped round.
cheers
