Title: The Muster of Rohan has began!
Post by: Arthadan on November 22, 2015, 04:33:45 PM
First serious project I embark in!

I want to build a Rohan warband for skirmish games based on the books. I'll begin with infantry because I can't make up my mind about basing for cavalry (but it will be added eventually).

Some pictures are blury, (sorry aboy that!) and they're missing round shields.

Miniatures are Mithril mainly with some red Box Games, Bronze Age and Wargames Factory (some are converted).
I have added five Foundry vikings after taking the pictures and I have to dig out some more Mithril foot Rohirrim from my vault at my parents house this Christmas, but this is the core:

Command (standard may be replaced with a banner):

Heroes (axe guy needs fingers and center guy will get a mane floating in the same direction of the cloak and probably a horn hung from his belt as he would made a fine Erkebrand).

Chainmail warriors:

Leather armour warriors:

Light infantry:

Archers (they've got some Foundry reinforcements after the pic was taken):

First steps are mounting all of them on round bases and stripping Mithril undercoat.

First advance.

All undercoated miniatures has been stripped.

And all the rest has been based (I hate so much removing integral bases!). Also I have sand down a huge basketball bat a Foundry miniature has as sword to a more reasonable size (you can spot some Foundry reinforcement among the archers).

A mountain of shinny glorious metal (mostly).

Next update you'll see all of them based ans some sculpting done (I've made two head swaps which need necks and hair and I have some filling to do). then I'll glue some sand to the bases and prime everything.

Which spray primer do you recomend (I want it grey).

Nice collection. :) Mostly Mithril - must have cost a decent amount! But what was wrong with the undercoat?

Grey it is, then. :D

Yep! I'm more into Tolkien books than into sports, as you can gather :D

Undercoat is too thick for my taste and these are from the regular serie, not the crazy prized collector limited editions they do nowadays. I got the whole rohirrim serie in a Mithril sale and price was quite reasonable.

Sculpting time!

I'll spare you all the boring gaps filled, let's cut to the chase.

Arms shortened, and a smaller sword hand sculpted (compare with the first picture in the first post).
(http://s29.postimg.org/od8wzfz0j/IMG_0995.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/od8wzfz0j/)

This guy got hair.
(http://s29.postimg.org/ufgjpxngj/IMG_0996.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/ufgjpxngj/)

Stones on the base to match the ones he's standing on.
(http://s7.postimg.org/r9ej6w0w7/IMG_1007.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/r9ej6w0w7/)

The standard needs sanding and I'll try to make a tiny horse head on top.
(http://s7.postimg.org/v1y1mmgef/IMG_1008.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/v1y1mmgef/)

I'll try to make him braids and maybe a crest on the helmet.

Sculpting is completed!

Erkenbrand got a crest and i replaced the strange looking pouch with a belt 8and added a strip to hold it).
(http://s30.postimg.org/y3o1sopod/Erkenbrand.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/y3o1sopod/)

The standard got a small horse head on top (use your imagination...) and the standard-bearer got a new hand to actually grasp the standard pole. he will be wielding a sword on his other hand (yeah, a leftie with the scabbard hunging on the wrong side but don't tell anybody).
(http://s30.postimg.org/aa4snqltp/Standard2.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/aa4snqltp/)

Here you can see the hand better:
(http://s30.postimg.org/mftzy50jh/Standard.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/mftzy50jh/)

And a little bonus, I got this Elf drom MOM miniatures yesterday. He came with plate armour on his body and lower legs and a massive arrow tip. I've removed and reworked all that, I think he looks part as Haldir.

Nice thread. Btw if you're uk based Wilkos brand matt grey primer is really good stuff! Gives a really nice light grey finish. :)

Coming along nicely. Great conversions and cool subject. Consider Proxie 25x50mm pill bases for your cavalry. They are a smidge under 3mm high and a (very) tiny bit recessed, so when you add the height of the Mithril integral base (I assume you won't cut these off as that would be a bit mad) should match pretty closely to the 3mm height of your other figures.

A much more time consuming option is to cut a Reaper "RPG" 25mm round base in half and put in an extension made from for example a few 25mm lengths of plastic angle bar with a square piece of plasticard holding the two "rails" together. Then you'd probably have to smooth the gaps with a sandable epoxy, airplane filler or I would use acrylic painters modeling compound that is actually powdered marble with a great archival-quality binder. Think of those round dining tables that can be pulled apart and a "leaf" (as we say in the US) can be inserted for when guests come over. But in this way you can have yourself a recessed base with 2+ mm of recess.

@Orc thanks for cheering me up! hopefully I'll have them primed next weekend.

@Spooktalker those Proxie bases look spot on, I wasn't sold on round bases for cavalry.

However I am removing the integral bases, as I'm mixing miniatures from different manufacturers and some of them are slotta. I'm even thinking about replacing Mithril horses with either eBob's or palstic Perry's (sculpting/modifying saddles) because I don't like the undefined muscles of the Mithril ones, the quite limited poses and I think the early ones are a bit small for the riders. Anyway, I'm going to focus on the foot troops (and hopefully getting them done) before moving on to the riders.

BTW, and I don't know why I didn't say this before, but you may want to consider going with the Reaper RPG bases rather than your method of pinning the feet to slotta bases. They have flush sides and are simply a recessed cup. You can use them either way up. When they came out I pretty much sang hallelujah as I had made some tentative forays into basing my reaper and preslotta figures and no method was at all worth the effort. I left them alone for years and years waiting for these bases to come along. They are marvelous, and you would stand to gain back many an hour. I drill 'em, embed a magnet, glue in the integral base figure and fill in with premixed concrete path. Embed large stones if you want and then pat the patch with a damp brush and you get a texture better than sand with the single step.

I really wish they would make 20mm and 40mm rounds now.

Those Reaper bases look like a good idea, but they are too big. I'd need something like that in "Warhammer size" (25 mm, I think).

Time for a new update:

All primed, let the painting begin!

You can click on the pics for bigger size.

Nope, the Reaper RPG bases are in 25mm and 50mm round, the same sizes as GW slottas. The only difference is they don't have angled sides, meaning you have a bit more surface area to work with that the top, the whole 25mm vs ~23mm. I consider this a big plus as some figures, GW chaos warriors for example, on a GW base have their toes sticking over the edge, whereas on the Reaper base they don't, and all with exactly the same footprint. Also, if you mob the figures up base-to-base the gaps between the figures appear less, and so the effect is more seamless.
