Title: Relicblade, my newest project
Post by: Comsquare on November 28, 2015, 07:43:26 PM
Around a week ago I discovered "Relicblade" from "Metal Kings Studio", thanks to this thread:
http://leadadventureforum.com/index.php?topic=84586.0

I have to say I was hooked directly, and decided to get me the rules and cards as pdf to check them out.
And I have to say I wasn't disappointed after reading them  :D

Great little skirmish-game, well written rules with a lot of easy to understand examples, complimented by nicely done artwork.
Well worth the money, and highly recommended for people who like small, characterfull skirmish-games.

So, after reading the rules I decided that this will be my new project and I started thinking about what minis to use for it, as I have a big collection allready.

By now, the game features 3 "good" characters as well as 5 "baddies".
The good ones are the "Questing Knight", the "Cleric" and the "Wildelf Druid", the bad ones are the "Berserker Pig", the "Soldier Pig", the "Axe Pig", the "Raider Pig" and the "Shield Pig".

And these are the minis I decided to use for them:
My "Questing Knight"
(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt196/Comsquare/DSC03278_zpsyotnkzfs.jpg) (http://s611.photobucket.com/user/Comsquare/media/DSC03278_zpsyotnkzfs.jpg.html)

(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt196/Comsquare/DSC03276_zpsxep1m72x.jpg) (http://s611.photobucket.com/user/Comsquare/media/DSC03276_zpsxep1m72x.jpg.html)
He's a minor conversion (headswap) of a Confrontation "Paladin of Alahan"

The "Cleric" with his "Spirit Weapon"
(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt196/Comsquare/DSC03281_zpsy60srlmw.jpg) (http://s611.photobucket.com/user/Comsquare/media/DSC03281_zpsy60srlmw.jpg.html)
Again a Confrontation conversion, a "Griffin Templar" with a  head and weapon-swap

The "Wildelf Druid" and the "Wolf"-form
(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt196/Comsquare/DSC03280_zpsjkndnbgu.jpg) (http://s611.photobucket.com/user/Comsquare/media/DSC03280_zpsjkndnbgu.jpg.html)
Elf from Reaper, Wolf from Otherworld

And the "Pigs"  ;)
(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt196/Comsquare/DSC03283_zpsp8moyqm6.jpg) (http://s611.photobucket.com/user/Comsquare/media/DSC03283_zpsp8moyqm6.jpg.html)
Confrontation Celts, showing "Shield Pigs", a "Berserker Pig" and a "Axe Pig"

I also made a custom card, because I wanted to field some kind of "Leader Pig", so I made a "Alpha Shield Pig"
(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt196/Comsquare/2e870fad-c157-4b8f-b612-eaaba689556a_zpsznvrfsgh.jpg) (http://s611.photobucket.com/user/Comsquare/media/2e870fad-c157-4b8f-b612-eaaba689556a_zpsznvrfsgh.jpg.html)

So, the plan by now is to play tomorrow my first game, after that I hopefully find the time for painting and terrainbuilding ;)
Will keep you updated on how the project develops.

In the meantime, to get more informations regarding the game, check out the official site:

Thanks

Love the art and those cards!

Love the art as well.
For my custom-card, I simply used a existing one which I converted a little bit to suit my needs.
Have to say I showed it also to Sean, the creator of the game, to get his "ok" :)

By the way, will use your lovely "Beehive Huts" to make a small settlement for the "pigs", Chris

 ;D

Me too  ;)
Fingers crossed I soon find the time for painting.

Meanwhile, the first game, which was planned for sunday but was moved to tomorrow evening, will be played.

For now, the line-up for the good guys looks like that:

Knight
(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt196/Comsquare/800c2c3e-bf5b-4ece-9820-f39f4dda3007_zps3h1rqghq.jpg) (http://s611.photobucket.com/user/Comsquare/media/800c2c3e-bf5b-4ece-9820-f39f4dda3007_zps3h1rqghq.jpg.html)

Cleric
(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt196/Comsquare/DSC03286_zpszldgupr3.jpg) (http://s611.photobucket.com/user/Comsquare/media/DSC03286_zpszldgupr3.jpg.html)

Druid
(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt196/Comsquare/92642e99-bc18-4ac4-97dd-3b33574366d9_zpswqfblmv9.jpg) (http://s611.photobucket.com/user/Comsquare/media/92642e99-bc18-4ac4-97dd-3b33574366d9_zpswqfblmv9.jpg.html)

The game will be played at 100 points, which is the size for a standart game.

That Questing Knight set-up looks suspiciously much like the one I used yesterday - Certifiably nasty! Riposte is quite powerful!

Same here, and I agree: Looking forward to seeing more of this!

Riposte is quite powerful!

It is, but sadly it hasn't help me to win the game  >:(
Bloody, damn pigs  lol

But have to say, I really enjoyed our first game and looking forward for more games to come.
Yesterday we simply played an all-in battle, without a relic to loot, just to get the rules right, but our next games will have some story to be played.

All in all the rules were easy to get and still quite a lot to learn...love it  :-*

I am full of ideas for small scenic terrain boards.

Me too  :D,
Started allready with some smaller scenary, like a mushroom-field and a smal pig-settlement.

Oh. and here's the line-up of the pigs, by the way:

(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt196/Comsquare/DSC03299_zpshbejlld1.jpg) (http://s611.photobucket.com/user/Comsquare/media/DSC03299_zpshbejlld1.jpg.html)

And 2x

Thats interesting - In our games, the adventurers seemed pretty dominant. But we DID only play two times, so its in no way representative.
I agree: Its great fun, and I really do have a hankering to play some more. I haven't tried playing the Pigs at 100 pts yet.

And after that I really want to try and work on a statcard for a Beholder I am trying to sculpt at the moment. I like the idea of the adventurers fighting some sort of huge boss monster.

Just played one game yet and hope I lost just because of bad luck throwing the dice  lol
Next time I will butcher those pigs  :D

Please share the statcard for the beholder, once done, would like to test him then.
And share a pic of the sculpt as well ;)

I was watching quite often my son playing "Darksouls" and really love the feel and the setting of it, and somehow Relicblades has the same sort of feeling to me.
So, I think I will take that as some reference how "my" Relicblade-games and settings will look like.

Also am I looking forward for next years official expansions.
Saw some nice concept sketch for a kind of "bad" hero which looked quite promising  ;D

Oooh - A bad hero/commander for the bad guys was on my top list of things I was missing in the initial set. So thats good to hear.

I'll definitely post pictures and statcard - But I need to make them first. So it'll propably be a bit :P

Hi guys,

I'm really exited to read about your games and the tactical builds you've been using. The pigs really start to shine at 100 points since they tend to operate more like an army instead of a D&D party. You can really take advantage of tactical formations with shield pigs supported by soldiers, for example. It's the same with the heroes though. If you set up a good support system for a tank, DPS, and healer you can really clean house. I wish I could play games with you all!

I picked up Darksouls at my friends recommendation and after a few hours I was super inspired to build terrain. I ended up making a ton of terrain, which really helps with running demos.

Yepp, Darksouls has a lot of inspirations for me as well  :)

So, sadly I hadn't the time for hobby-stuff recently, which means that progress in this project isn#t as fast as I planned  :(

At least, I had the time to build some terrain (well, I built one and started with an other one ;) )
I was working on some Mushroom fields, first the finished one:
(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt196/Comsquare/DSC03327_zpskh7uqkpp.jpg) (http://s611.photobucket.com/user/Comsquare/media/DSC03327_zpskh7uqkpp.jpg.html)

And the one in progress:
(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt196/Comsquare/DSC03328_zps5cknn398.jpg) (http://s611.photobucket.com/user/Comsquare/media/DSC03328_zps5cknn398.jpg.html)
(Waiting for the mushrooms, ordered from Fenris games ;) )

The finished one is undercoated allready, so is the Cottage from Tabletop World, which will be used in this project as well.

And I got a nice package today from Metal King Studios, which included the printed rules and cards, as well as the minis  :D
They are really well done, love them.
Will post some comparison pics of them once I've cleaned and glued them.

Oh, and happy new year to everyone  :)

Small update  :)

While still waiting for my order from Fenris to arrive, I finaly got the time to clean and build some of the minis.

Here's the first pic of them:

(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt196/Comsquare/DSC03364_zpso5dysg6u.jpg) (http://s611.photobucket.com/user/Comsquare/media/DSC03364_zpso5dysg6u.jpg.html)
From left: Soldier Pig, Cleric, "Alpha" Shield Pig, Questing Knight

The Pigs have all seperate hands, which means they are quite easy to convert.
There are 3 different bodies, and right now I just used the "Soldier/Axe" body to make me my leader as well, the "Alpha".
The other Shield Pigs will get straight blades and square-shields, so that they can easily be distinguished from the "Alpha".
The casting-quality is very good, just very few and very fine moldlines to remove, and the minis are easy to assemble.
My favorite sculpt is the Cleric, love her dynamic pose.

And here a few comparison shots:

So, small update, again  ;)

Still waiting for my Fenris-order to arrive, I started to work on some terrain pieces.
Will do 4 pieces right now and add more depending on the time I have.

First of, a small village:
(http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/tt196/Comsquare/DSC03387_zpswyby44bp.jpg) (http://s611.photobucket.com/user/Comsquare/media/DSC03387_zpswyby44bp.jpg.html)

Second, the lair of the "Pigs":

Then, a mushroom-field:

And a generic piece:

And finally, a pic of the new character-card I made:

The one on the right will be the mushroom-field, which I will paint first before glueing them into place ;)

Hope you like them so far.

How do miniatures move from one island to the other?

I will build some ropebridges, but, depending on the placement of the islands you could try to jump over the gap as well, or use a rope/grappling hook, or some flying apparatus.
On the village-island you can see a docking-platform for them ;)

Lovely work there.  Have to crib the floating island idea and execution for one of my own projects.

I picked up the rules download and cards a while ago. You've encouraged me to pull out the print out i made and see if i can get a game in soon!

The floating islands is a great idea - should provide some interesting games!

This is great, I love the floating islands, I've wanted to do something similar for sci fi for ages.

I really like Relicblade, I do wish that it had more archetypes though - I've got all the cards, including expansion, but the selection isn't quite as varied as I'd like. Hopefully they'll release more.

Thanks guys, glad you like them :)

@beefcake
The huts are great, worth getting them from Chris/Zaheer

I really love Relicblade, great little game worth trying out.
But I agree, more archetypes would be great...but I know that Sean is working on them ;)

Hope to see more floating-island projects soon  :D

Just to let you all know, Sean announced his new kickstarter, coming this october:

Greetings Good People,

I hope by now you have all had the chance to break open your boxes of Relicblade! It has been a pretty amazing year. And in fact the first anniversary of Relicblades conception past only a few weeks ago. A year ago I wanted to jump into making the first expansions for the game, and I've been holding back my feverish imagination tempering my creative energy to do things right.

I sat down and did some simple maths to figure out how much money I need to make what I want to make. And it turns out I need to do another crowdsource campaign. I think that's how being an independent artist goes these days. Of course, thats half the fun. Gotta love the hustle of being a maker in the golden age of the internet!

It is my pleasure to announce the Relicblade Expansion "Bone and Darkness" Kickstarter campaign, which will launch on October 15th!

This fall we will finally see the full horror of the Dark Wanderer unleashed. "Bone and Darkness" will be a 10 card booster pack with six sinister new upgrades and several skeletal monstrosities to menace your foes. Along with the yet unreleased Dark Wanderer/Dark Watcher miniature (which backers of the original Kickstarter already have) there will be three new miniatures to support the Darkness.

The Kickstarter campaign will also include a second expansion to reenforce the Path of the Advocate. You'll need all the help you can get to deal with what's coming.

Your Friend,

Sean Sutter

Looking forward to that  :D

I went on the official website, and discovered that a first expansion set was already available, with new archetypes !

I think I'll go for a try with the cheap pdf versions, to play my own collection of figures. The game should be a good candidate for my "recycking heroscape tiles" project :

The Legends Expansion Pack is primarily a pack of cards that features new "custom" heroes that Sean did as a reward for backing his first kickstarter at a certain level.
Basically, if you pledged at that level, you could give him a character concept for on of your RPG characters and he would make it into a Relicblade hero.
Its a great pack, and one I am happy that I picked up!

I just finished printing everything, I'll post pics tonight !

Concerning custom cards, do you draw them by hand, of do you use some software ?

@Relicblade owner, it would be nice to have some kind of "construction kit" for our own cards (maybe an embedded pdf with several archetypes illustrations, embedded font, etc...) ? Maybe a goal for the kickstarter  :D

I use Gimp (GNU Image Manipulation Program) to make my custom cards, its like an open source version of photoshop. https://www.gimp.org/
I am not a skilled artist, so for my custom characters, I just drop in art that I like, and I make most of the cards abilities by cutting and pasting parts of the other cards digitally.

How do you calculate the points-cost?
I try to compare with existing-characters to balance them somehow.
And if I'm not sure I ask Sean  ;)

thank you, in fact I already know gimp, I'm a linux user  ;)

Speaking of gimp, I modified the pdf rules cover so I can go fully in the black and white old school flavor (and my printer color doesn't work anymore, that's another reason lol tommorow I'll go shopping for a new one).

I also printed the cards, and put them in sleeves. I also recycled an old small amazon box to store them.

Concerning the book itself, I just removed the grey backgrounds to save ink, and lowered some grey aeras for the same purpose (and my printer greys are pretty strong, so it's more readable this way too).

Sure.
The first one I did is shown in the very first post of this thread, the "Alpha" pig.
It has the same artwork as the Shieldpig but different stats to make him a leader.

The other finished one right now is the "Witchhunter".

Not like I need another Fantasy game. My group is quite accustomed to SOBH mechanics, but I love the miniatures, the concept, the artwork, and I truly enjoy supporting small companies and indie projects like this. (those Pig-Orcs are very keen)

Methinks it's time to sell stuff to get $$ to buy stuff - like that two-player starter.

Thanks for the info on this.

Sorry to resurrect - I just had a leaf through the Seeker's Handbook from the latest kickstarter, it's absolutely brill! What a great little game - for me, all it needs is a few more archetypes and it would be my go to fantasy skirmish game. Well worth getting hold of the PDF, includes the rules for those that don't have them.

I'm reading the new book right now as well and have to say that it's great.
Well done, Sean  :)

And, hopefully, I should be able to post some updates for my project pretty soon here.

Thanks @Jagannath and @Comsquare !

I'm extremely excited about the seeker's handbook. It's one of my proudest achievements so far. That's probably not fair to say since Relicblade as a whole has a lot of stuff I'm super proud of.

I totally agree about more archetypes! I just have to do it one step at a time. I want to give each archetype the attention it deserves. Next up is probably a wizard or two. Wizards are a challenge because the base card with only three abilities doesn't really cover such a complex character class. That means lots of upgrades, which means lots of cards, which is costly to produce. sigh.  o_o

Nevertheless, they're coming. And after play testing the Flame Bearer (elemental wizard, plays more like a denial piece because your opponent has to put out the fires he's starting or face dire consequences.) , I almost always want one in my party build. That might just be a result of getting swept up in loving a design I'm obsessing over designing.

I received my package in the mail with all my new Kickstarter stuff last night, and I must say that I am very pleased with all of my new goodies!  I did not get the Eel or the Hammerhead warrior yet, but I am sure that I will eventually get them as well.

Going to try and get a game in this weekend and play with my new toys, and to try out the new companion rules.

@MetalKingStudio Can't wait to see what you come up with for Wizards!
