I'm not sure if this should go here or in the dedicated fantasy section, so if anyone wants to move it, go ahead.
Anyway, I thought folks might be strange enough to want to see what I did with my last order from Black Hat, the Monkey Magic set from the Tales of the Dragon Kings range:

Sorry for the dodgy quality of the pictures.
These were great fun to paint. They look nothing like the TV series characters, but I tried to at least copy the colour schemes where I could, and tie them all together by using the yellow scarves etc.
I think my favourite one is Pigsy, he just looks so happy. lol
Over to you for the C&C. Cheers for looking!
JB

I do like those very nice :D
Fishface looks like he is doing a number from the sound of music though with his prancing lol

-
Excellent, brings back memories of the series. 8)

JollyBob you should not post this kind of stuff! it's wonderfull! :) :-*
-
Good work JollyBob, classic characters :)

-
Very nice figures and excelent brush work !!!!
-
Thanks very much everyone! :)
I must abdmit, I wish they bore a little more resemblance to the TV icons of my childhood, but they are still lovely little figs, and the hole range has a great sense of fun.
I've got the alternate Monkey and the Vampire Hunters to do next. I'll post the pics as and when.
-
If you pardon my saying so, you guys seem very hung up on this one portrayal of Journey to the West. There are hundreds of other ones.
Sorry if I'm sounding critical, I don't mean to :P
-
Lovely paintjobs, they look great!
I have a small pile of these to turn into a project next year as well ::)

I realise that, but if you grew up in England in the 70's and 80's, then the TV series of Monkey (and The Water Margin) was pretty much all we had to go on, and they have become cemented in our unconscious minds as the "proper" way things should look. Silly, perhaps, but true.
And at least you took the time to comment, thank you. :)
-
Point taken. I guess it just bugs me the same way it bugs me to know that future generations will grow up thinking (however unconsciously) that Frodo is Elijah Wood and Arwen is the daughter of the bloke from Aerosmith :?
I forgot to say that the paintjobs are great, whichever way.

Aahh, friday night early evening BBC2 TV at its best, happy memories.
Greta work Bob, lovely stuff. :)

Latest addition to the project, and very much inspired to get my finger out and finish it by Svennn's version elsewhere on the board. Hope you like it:
I went for a darker cloud, as I seem to remember it being quite stormy but shot through with pink lights in the TV series. I'm not sure it's worked, but I can't be bothered to do anything else with it now. lol
-
Very cool, all five of them.
The cloud looks about right to me, with the pinkish hue to it.
-
Cheers mate! :)
Here's a couple more that I finished today as well. A Temple Guardian, obviously *ahem* inspired by your display one, and a hungry ghost.
-
I like em both, thanks for the nod on the temple guardian, your's is a little better kept than mine, the priests forgot to polish the metals on mine, lol.
Nice to see the ghost not painted in the LOTR greens too!!
-
Rob, I have eyed the MSB Toys versions of these characters for quite some time now.
Your thread makes me succumb. ::)
The guardian is very nicely painted, but the ghost nails it: Really terrifying(Well painted, though...) without using the standard 'ghostly' colours!
-
Wow, thanks guys, I'm really surprised that you like the ghost so much as that was the one I was least happy with.
I was going to try the LOTR ghost effect on her, then realised I didn't know how to do it and decided to make her a bit more "fresh" looking instead. Its still a slapdash paintjob, though. Lots of drybrush and wash.
-
Apologies for the threadomancy, but I finally got round to finishing a few more bits for this project.
First, I finished my Vampire and Zombies, all heavily inspired by the movie Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires. I had a total block about these until I watched it.
They are very quick jobs as I wanted them to look dirty and foul, as though they'd just crawled out of the grave. I think (hope) I pulled it off.
Also finished a while ago now, but forgot to post, my Vampire Hunter captain:
And a couple of his pressganged local bruisers (Curteys minis, not Black Hat):
Caught up with a couple of bits of terrain too:
Still got a Necromancer, the rest of the Hunter warband, and some Kung-Fu Monks to do. Will post as and when, unless you are bored and tell me to stop. lol
-
How could anyone get bored with this,
evocative and fantasticly inspiring
well done looking forward to more
chop chop

-
Im just wondering where you got the dogs and bridge from?
-
The dogs are Ainsty/Old Crow I think, the bridge not so sure.
-
Yep, dogs are Old Crow (think they cost about £2.50). The bridge is an aquarium decoration I picked up for £3 in a local shop. Just the right size though. :)
-
Finally showing some real progress with this, so begging your indulgence once again, I present the Kung Fu Monks:
The rest of the Vampire Hunter Team:
And the evil mastermind behind the recent undead outbreak:
I may add a third Fung brother to the Vampire Hunters, and I have a couple of zombies that might get added too, but I need to finish a dozen peasants and get my terrain finished before I think about that.
Thanks for looking, all C&C welcome as ever! :)
-
Nice work JB. Quite a collection you have put together already.
I bought a load of these from Magister Militum ages ago and have only manged to paint one of them so far, you may have just inspired me to pull them out of the pile again.
-
:D My work here is done...
Well, no it isn't, but thanks for the compliment.
-
Real nice JollyBob... the way you painted the yellow robes... It's just great! :-*
-
Great as usual...
I really must get back to my Dragon Kings HOTT armies
Mike
-
Delightful stuff Rob. :-* :-* :-*
I love them all, esoecially the Vampires and there's seven of them ;)
All Ineed to do now is find my Peter Chsing figure and we can play Victorian Horror/kung Fu.... :)
-
Excellent stuff :-*
Mine are still sitting in the lead mountain still to be unearthed..
-
I love them all, esoecially the Vampires and there's seven of them ;)
Glad you like them. And that was what I'd been watching when I decided on the colour scheme for them... (mmmm, Julie Ege... :-*)
Thanks for the comments all, very nice of you. :)
-
What rules system are you planning on using with these?
-
Its going to be a homebrew version of Mordheim with the campaign stuff stripped out. I'm only planning on running it at BLAM this year so it needs to be fairly fast and easy to pick up.
I still need to playtest it to see if my rules for new weapons and skills work ok, but it won't be drastically different in terms of stats etc.
-
And here's the last few bits of the project for the time being. Ten peasants (actually Curtey's minis) another hungry ghost, and a wandering mystical Panda:
So now I've got all the figures done, have finished the terrain and have a game planned for tomorrow night. Keep your eyes peeled for the report!
-
Great as usual and that Panda is superb...
Mike
-
Cheers Mike! :)
-
Nice peasanty shade of black you have there, the ghost's red eyes are really .. err.. eyecatching and I agree about that Panda.
Great stuff!
-
Thank you.
However, now the relief of finishing a project for the first time ever has worn off a bit, and I look at the pictures again, I'm not happy with them at all.
Rushed them through just to get them finished, cocked up in several places and made an arse of the highlights on the panda's jacket (not to mention the mould line on his arm - didn't even see that while painting it!).
Ah well, there's a valuable lesson learned, then.
-
so, are those hobbit peasants?
-
Don't be so hard on yourself JollyBob!
And White Knight - don't mock the afflicted… lol
(the peasants, not JollyBob…)
-
Robby, Don't be hard on yourself, they look great. :)
I love the gap toothed chap at the top right and that panda is my absloute favourite of the whole range. ;D
-
Well, following the playtest last week, it was decided that amongst the rules tweaking I had to do, I also needed to paint up a few more models for the Undead warband, as it was painfully obvious in the game that the only thing zombies have going for them is their Fear causing ability. And if you can overcome that, they really aren't up to much.
But if you can mob a lone figure with three or four of the buggers, well, that's a different story! (I'm beginning to see how Akula got started now!)
Anyway, the last, absolute and definitely final pieces for the game:
An Evil Warrior henchman for the Vampire and Necromancer, who will hopefully add a bit more stability to the line-up:
I chose him because his outfit is almost excatly the same as the zombies' uniforms - well, except for the Mickey Mouse ears. ;D
Then a couple more of the regular rotters:
And a special comedy zombie (from Cold War) because he just fit in with the rest:
This now makes the Undead the most numerous warband, but they will probably be the most challenging to play too.
Phew! Is it alright if I stop now...? o_o
-

I wish you hadn't mentioned the ears as its all I keep looking at now lol
He looks very evil especially with that dodgy tache. ;) Very nicely done :)

No keep going I am loving this project ;D
-
I'm gonna see if I can grow a moustache like that by the end of the month. Douglas fairbanks by way of Charlie Chan. lol
(I won't really. My facial hair is too thin even for that crap a tache! :'()

Get a couple of slugs - it worked for Baldrick, although balancing two of them could be tricky ;)
-
You have still got a fortnight man, for crying out loud, you could double the project in that time. :D :D
-
Bugger off, you. :P
We aren't all as speedy as you are, and if I paint any more it's in danger of not being a skirmish game anymore. I've already based up three more trees tonight, even though I have enough.
(Besides, if I leave this be, I might get my Gardner gun finished for the VSF game...)
-
Dont stick your tongue out at me young man >:(
I'll wear my JollyBob coat to blam if your not careful ???
