Great work, what heads did you use for the troops in the red uniform

The Sendai troops have Woodbine Design French Kepi heads. Not really Asiatic, but the kepi is correct, and they are clean shaven.

Great work Ian! Like a lot, specially Tosa cavalry.
What figures did you use for them?

Plastic Perry ACW, with the Bac Ninh Shogunate heads with hachimaki.

Thank you Ian.
By the way, are you make the katanas?

Time would not allow for the Katanas, so I modified some Perry Naginatas, of which I have far too many.  :) I ran out of hachimaki heads for the other two cavalrymen, so they will get put on the back burner until the New Year.

Lovely stuff, Crouchie. I especially like the cavalry conversions (I've been looking for info on Imperial cavalry for a while, but my google skills have let me down).

I watched Yae no Sakura recently, in preparation for jumping on the Boshin bandwagon. Quality stuff. There's a good film on Netflix at the mo, if you've got it - 'When the Last Sword is Drawn'. It focusses on a couple of the Shinsengumi.

Found a sprue of the plastic Perry ACW Zouaves. Crumpled baggy trousers had to go. I managed to fill the creased bits in with putty, and filed off almost all the frippery, water bottle, bread bag and associated straps, plus the knee bindings. Just one belt for the cartridge pouch and a waist sash to hide any remaining shell jacket bottoms and fix the sheathed katana. Unceremoniously plonk on a Bac Ninh Nirayama head. Allow to dry and then paint. I'll post photos when I have based them. I now have three extra for the Aizu to fight off those dishonourable Satsumas and their rotten Choshu allies. I think two of them look the part. The third is a bit dodgy. Perhaps too much rice wine, and a night in the paddy field.

Yes, but I have been sidetracked with 40mm AWI for a friend. I think he is planning both armies in entirety. Seems that way with all the painting.

Any tutorials on how you done those infantry, they look great

Perry Zouaves plastic infantry, any flouncy detail such as lace removed, greenstuff pantaloons with a flap at the front, and insignia cloth on the left arm.. Bac Ninh heads. I think of myself as a straight line model maker, and these were not straight.
